Lovely staff, beautiful surroundies good place to access hikes or lovly small towns. Roads are narrow getting there but it is a gorgeous location. Excellent breakfast and pub food.

Diane on reception and at breakfast was outstanding. Staff were courteous. I had purchased a voucher in advance for food and drink, however, the hotel did not have the equipment to read the code and the details had to be input manually. All worked out well in the end and the three night stay was great value.
Room could have done with some coat hooks especially as the large wardrobe only had four coat hangers. A hook in the bathroom would have been useful and there was only one bedside lamp, otherwise the room was ideal with plenty of space, a lovely bed and a large tv. Good hotel and would recommend to others.

No staff on reception, you have to find someone from behind the bar and our room was not made up despite handing in the form at reception to request this.

We would not stay again.

Not enough staff for the number of guests - chap having to cover both the bar/food orders and reception when multiple guests were arriving and wanted to check in at the same time as people were wanting drinks and food.
Stressful check in demanding a physical credit card to secure against failure to pay for meals/drinks charged to the room. It would be helpful if this requirement was clearly described at the point of confirmation of a booking.
The corridors and our room were very tired and in poor condition. Musty smell in the corridors, mould behind the door in the room, broken tiles and ‘bodged’ repairs in the bathroom. Mattress was very soft.
To be fair to the cleaners, they are doing a good job with the environment they have- there is clearly effort to make the room & bathroom clean & tidy.
Breakfast was a stressful affair with the staff appearing to be rushing everything and quite surly in manner.
The same stress and attitude on check out relating to the credit card (from a different member of staff) despite not having made any charges to the room. Charged for breakfast despite the pre-paid booking stating this was included.
The food we had in the evening was well cooked and hot and the garden setting was nice.
Overall, given our experience, the general condition of the place and the cost, we would look to stay elsewhere when visiting the area again.

Quick night away for a hike .
The hotel as just got new owners and the manager Francesca and staff couldn't do enough considering the workload and changes they are having to do.
Beautiful room in the attic even though it was just a standard room. Great breakfast and plenty coffee & tea in room too. Brilliant location and free parking included too.
I'm looking forward to going back after the upgrades and changes.

Lovely hotel situated deep within the Langdale valley. Fantastic walking options from the front door. The restaurant & bar are a very welcome oasis at the end of a day’s walking. Gorgeous views to be had all around. Ample parking available. Our bathroom could’ve done with a bit of work (extractor fan not working), but otherwise very comfortable and recommended.

Awesome location, and it’s one of two hotels in the valley, so there’s not much competition. Room was ok, modern big bathroom but as it was top floor, care needs to be taken to avoid constantly bumping your head on the sloping ceiling. FOH Staff were great and very friendly. When Katy was there, everything seemed to work fine. When she wasn’t, things were different. There was a new staff member who was single handedly taking evening meal orders, manning the bar, reception, waiting on tables, etc, all with a very commendable calm and apologetic demeanor, but 35 mins for our standard Sunday roasts to appear seemed a bit long. But we weren’t in a rush, so no problem. There was a different staff member on duty at breakfast the next day and 20 mins for breakfast to come also seemed a long time to wait, especially as we then had other things we’d sooner have been doing. Apparently Katy was poorly, but it would be worthwhile having a contingency plan in place if possible.
Gardens are lovely, with some all-weather furniture. Super- warm drying room, which is very much appreciated, esp in this location.
Best thing about this place is the location, with paths up to the Langdale Pikes right out the back of the hotel.

Easily my favourite place to stay in the Lakes!

Brilliant, cosy inn with restaurant, and great rooms and Teapigs in the rooms… beats a cheap coffee sachet. The staff were really friendly, and my daughter and I loved our stay for two days climbing in the Lakes. The breakfasts are superb too.

Obviously a very busy place for both lodging & food, The staff went over & above to make sure we were fed, okay It had taken a little longer than expected but the wait is worth it. The Hotel was impeccably clean & the room was comfortable and well laid out, the cleaners there do probably the best job I have seen to date (well done!) The hotel is in such a stunning area and the views are spectacular. The hotel room was very clean and had everything needed for a basic stay. It does need some modernisation (no USB sockets) and the pillows were very hard. I cannot fault the staff and especially Diane at breakfast who was so attentive and polite even though she was continuously in the go. The breakfast selection was excellent. We also had dinner one evening and the pie of the day was delicious. We found the experience very good and would stay again

The hotel was generally untidy and tired looking. The first room we were allocated had an unmade bed and obviously hadn’t been serviced. Breakfast was ordered and arrived 15 minutes later with cold undercooked bacon and cold overdone eggs, I didn’t eat any of it. Overall very disappointing.

A lovely place to stay no doubt. We had a comfortable 3 nights stay. The staff were lovely. The location was amazing.

The rooms were a bit small. We did have a cotbed but it could still be a bit bigger for the kind of hotel it is. The mattress were a bit on the harder side for our liking but it depends on what you are used to.

The hotel was a bit too hot for the weather. We had to keep our window open slighly and turn off the room heating completely but it was still a bit hot as the lobby was very hot.

But overall it was a memorable stay and i would go back again mainly just for the service and location.

Fabulous location at the foot of Stickell Ghyll in the Langdale Valley. Perfect for hikers. Food offering was rather unimaginative, however, with nothing for veggies or vegans. (Old Dungeon Ghyll 20 mins walk up the road offers a bit more variety). Dining room also rather gloomy - needs a makeover - while the walkers bar is a bit dominated by sport TV. Drying room for wet weather gear also not fit for purpose. But a great stay nevertheless.

The property is very good. However our experience wasn’t the best. We arrived at the hotel at 8:00 pm and as we were riding all day. We were tired and hungry. We went straight to the restaurant/pub and explain that we had just arrived, that we need to check in and also that we wanted some food. The lady said that because they were busy it wouldn’t be possible for the kitchen to take our order. Bearing in mind this was at exactly 8:03pm and on the paper which the same person gave to us said that on Saturdays the kitchen will be open until 8:15 and specifically stated last orders would be at 8:15. Very disappointed with the customer service. Apart from that, as stated above very nice property and the rooms were ok.

Overall, great stay; the location is amazing, beautiful views, quiet (the only noise coming is from rooms), good starting point for hiking Crinkle Crags, Bowfell or Langdale Pikes. Room was ok; bed very comfortable, big TV, tea&coffee making facilities, hairdryer could be better (very short cord); the main issue for me was the noise from other rooms (thin walls or simply noisy guests) and a bit of problem with the window. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast only starts from 8.00am, a bit limited choice when you stay over 4 nights; hot food is cooked to order so expect a bit of delay, porridge was great. Evening meal - tried the burger and it was tasty but Sunday menu was quite reduced and the \"evening\" roast was a bit overcooked. Would happily stayed again as views are stunning and it feels a bit like a retreat away from the crowds / the city. Bus service 516 starts from 10.00am until 7pm every 2hrs but expect delays due to the narrow roads, around 30-40min to get to Ambleside.

Very poor house keeping, first day we arrived the toilet wasn't cleaned as it had dirty poo stains, my girlfriend mentioned this to me the next day and she disinfected it herself, had I known then I would have told the staff to clean it, on top of this they didn't take the bins out in our room, just flung the duvet on top of the bed in a very untidy manner, never replenished the toilet rolls or the tea tray. On the Thursday we left the sign to make up our room and they didn't even bother, when we came back they clearly hadn't been in our room. Mentioned this to a lady at the front desk when we checked out and was told I would get an email from management that day but haven't received anything yet. Food was very pricey as well so we mostly ate out instead.

A Very Enjoyable stay

Thank you to the staff, particularly the manager, for looking after us on our stay. There was a hiccup with their booking system meaning one of our rooms wasn't available but they had it all under control and resolved very quickly and generously bought us a welcome drink for our 'trouble'. The level of customer service stayed the same right across the four days.

The hotel menu was good and the food very good. The location was ideal and given the good service we experienced it was no surprise that the hotel was full and the walkers bar full of non-residents for lunch and dinner.

The room was good, the bathroom very good and clean. Only downside for me was the pillows were a bit solid for me, but the bed was comfortable.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

Getting to the hotel was a wee bit terrifying. Very narrow, windy roads. Building is dated but the staff was extremely helpful and accommodating.

Stunning location, good value

A must stay for keen walkers. Comfortable rooms (bit small), nice public areas to chill and THE best beer garden in the Lakes for views. Food is more pub than fine dining but absolutely fine and breakfast excellent.

Great property & location for hiking (Scafell Pike); staff friendly and facilities great; we ate a few times and food was good pub grub! Would def stay again!
