We had an amazing weekend at Merewood County House.It was in a great location. Our room was huge with a great view of the lake. Everything was spotlessly clean and well set out. We had evening meals and breakfasts at the hotel and the food was excellent. All the staff were so welcoming and friendly and we couldn’t fault anything. Thank you

One disappointing area, was the size of the double room, bed small and the mattress very uncomfortable.

We had originally booked a double bed, but they were out of stock, so they changed us to two rooms free of charge. Very kind of them.And the hotel has a very retro décor and a great atmosphere. You can play chess with friends by the warm fireplace while enjoying a beer. It's very pleasant

Merewood is a beautiful country house hotel. We had a perfect stay. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the hotel and its grounds are just lovely. We ate in the Arboreal restaurant and, wow, what a treat that was. Really couldn't have been better

Absolutely wonderful staff, front of house host was lovely and very welcoming.

Beautiful cosy atmosphere in the three social areas we visited (bar,lounge and library).

Lovely hotel overall, will need to try the restaurant next time as we arrived later in the evening.

Very welcoming to our dogs which was much appreciated!

Lovely rooms.

Exquisite hotel in a fantastic location, amazing staff made us feel so welcome. From the receptionist, barman, to the restaurant staff all super friendly and welcoming. Food at the restaurant was some of the best we have ever had. Room was super comfy and clean, great views over Windermere, will definitely be going back.

Very Disappointing Dining

We booked this hotel for our wedding anniversary and as we love fine dining this hotel seemed a great choice as it has a restaurant with 2 AA rosettes. We received an email confirmation of our booking for the one night with the email saying we had a table booked in the fine dining restaurant at 7pm the Arboreal. When we arrived we were told we would now be dining in the grill bar as the Arboreal restaurant was closed on Sunday. The menu in the grill bar was awful and so was our food. We were very disappointed as this marred a special evening .

Stunning - a beautiful place.

The Tennyson Room (Room 5) was beautiful. The view was stunning, there were no irritations (wonky toilet seats, blown light bulbs, badly scratched paintwork etc.) at all. The receptionist was a great guy - good for a laugh and engaging. Breakfast excellent.

Believe me - we are coming back it was superb. I have no connections with this place at all. It was so much better than the top of the range place we stayed at in Anglesey 2 weeks ago and cost £70 less.

How to spoil a wedding anniversary stay

Food awful service non existent 6 dishes on menu 4 containing cheese so options were burger without cheese or fish and chips.tried to book a meal at 5.30 to be told 7.45 was the earliest they could serve as they were busy. IE 2 couples in a restaurant that holds approx 24 tables tried to order a sandwich but was told they finished a 6 pm no bar staff had to press buzzer and wait until some one eventually turned up
Breakfast a joke 1 sausage 1 small portion of scrambled eggs, and half a potatoes cake £15 ??? If you require anything you have to go around rooms and restaurant to find any staff for assistance
My food order came with the wrong food at 7.45 my wife ate hers while it was still warm and eventually my food arrived burger warm with triple x tripke cooked chips hot but had been re cooked so many times they were like crsps

The staff were really attentive, without being too much. A little time in getting drinks, but to be honest this just made us relax into the chilled atmosphere more.
The location was superb and we went for a dog walk straight from the hotel.

Property itself , very dated and the porch and reception floor was filthy and the lounge areas dirty .Nobody to receive guests, have to summon by buzzer and wait.Booked a double room for two pf us it was so small that it had one chair squeezed in , no room in the bathroom to put the toiletries etc. Asked if possible to have a bigger room. Told somebody would check. Nobody got back.
The water in the shower was always cold to lukewarm ,no matter what setting. Eating in was not attractive as limited menu.
The staff at breakfast were friendly , reception staff never greeted or made conversation.
Booked it as it was 4 star , was not what I accepted .Will not be returning.

A beautiful period property in an isolated area but not inconvenient place to drive into . It gives you an exclusive feelings with two lounges with relaxing music .

Our twin room was pretty and had a comfortable neutral colour scheme .

We ordered a room service and the snacks we had were excellent . The room is a bit small and sound proof is not great. But it was a fantastic place to stay regardless .

Excellent hotel representing great value for money

Pound for Pound this is the best hotel I have stayed in the Lake District. It was excellent value for money.

The setting is beautiful with lovely views of Lake Windermere.

It is very dog friendly whilst still maintaining a dog free restaurant. We were able to enjoy a fabulous meal on a table set up for us in an almost private area.

All staff were friendly and nothing seemed to much trouble for anyone.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and will definitely stay again next time we are in the Lakes.

A delightful Inn overlooking the lake. We were assigned a lake view room which was very comfortable (#3, Brontë).
The staff was helpful and friendly. They were also attending to a small wedding, but we felt valued and welcome.

Family and Dog Night Away

We came for a one night stay, two adults, one year old and a dog (one of the only places locally which allowed dogs!).

The hotel looks beautiful as you drive up the winding driveway. We were warmly greeted by the receptionist and who checked us in smoothly.

We had booked a four poster bed room as it had more space. I had emailed ahead to ask for a travel cot which the hotel happily provided at no extra cost. On first look the room was lovely, however the decor was slightly dated. Sadly in the bathroom too the wallpaper was peeling from the walls.


The hotel did however provide a little welcome kit for the dog too, which we thought was a lovely touch.


The bed was comfy and plenty of pillows provided. The room was well equipped with tea and coffee etc, also nice additions of bottled water, boiled sweets and a coffee machine.

We were on a bead and breakfast rate. We wish we had taken the hotel up on the offer of a separate room for dining where we could take the dog (ours was not best impressed being left in the room!). The food was tasty with lots of options to suit all.

Checkout was easy and is somewhere we would consider coming back to.

Don't hesitate ... just book it ! This is truly a unique place, and was wonderful for the 3 nights we stayed there -- is was like an oasis we returned to each evening. Originally built as a private country residence, it is elegant and stately, with drawing room, library, wonderful bar with lake views, and wide formal staircase. Be sure to book the breakfast option. The dining room is beautiful, with full table cloths and table service, wait service was absolutely excellent. Prices are comparable to what you would pay in town, without the hustle and bustle. Most rooms are on the second floor, and only down side is that there is no elevator, but we seniors did not find that to be a problem. Our room had bay windows with beautiful views of the lake in the distance. All staff were very friendly and helpful. This will be our #1 choice when we are back in the Lake District. Don't think twice, just book it !!

While booking we selected a room (215 sqft) which can fit a couch(sofa bed) the room was barely large enough to open a suitcase anywhere but the bed.
The hairdryer had pre-Covid dust, which we have to clean as nobody bothered responding ( contacted reception after 7am, which is within the operating hours).
Had to fix the shower which just needed tightening up a valve, but again no one in the property seems to care. I would go ahead and say that I want a complete refund.

Our second stay at the merewood, but unfortunately that personal touch / hospitality is not really there anymore. No servicing of rooms (we stayed 4 nights and at least once would have been nice) with no note to explain why in the room or upon checkin, staff didn’t even ask how our stay was on check out - the hotel isn’t cheap! No air con either on a v hot week. Location and views however are stunning, free parking onsite.

I only stopped for 1 night, Saturday 10th June, the staff were very helpful but had to ring the desk bell a number of times to get there attention, waited in excess of 15 minutes. Since I couldn't get into my room till 3pm, which is the norm, I asked if I could leave my luggage and asked if someone would take my luggage to my room since I had to leave the hotel at 1pm for a wedding reception at another nearby venue. I was a bit disappointed when I arrived back at the hotel, around 11pm, to find my luggage was still left next to the reception desk and had not been taken to my room as I asked and I was assured would happen. Overall my experience was good and yes, I would stay at the Merewood Country House again.

Disappointed stay

Beautiful hotel with lots of charm and style great location overlooking the lake. Room was smelly with what I would say was Cat urine smell. Toilet had skid marks in bottom. We booked into the rest so but as there was a small wedding on menu was a pub grill not what we wanted but food (fish n chips) was lovely. We had a room on the top floor facing the back so it was not what we had in mind.

Merewood country hotel lovely little hotel

Small hotel in the heart of the Lake District , the rooms at the front have a wonderful view of lake Windermere absolutely stunning .
The hotel is clean and well run , nothing was too much trouble. A comfortable well stocked bar, sitting room & library with nice big comfy armchairs overlooking the lake The breakfast was delicious there was a very varied menu to choose from and also full range of cereals fruit and pastries . . 4 different juices Tea & Coffee . We opted for the full English which was delicious with plenty of toast. . All served by cheerful helpful staff in the lovely grill room that can also be privately hired for small weddings. The bacon and sausage were locally sourced and were lovely and a choice of eggs mushrooms tomatoes black pudding and beans .
The room was clean and well laid out but some of the furniture has seen better days and could do with being updated . Bathroom again was clean with lovely big fluffy towels and nice toiletries were provided ,but there were a couple of broken tiles. . The over bath shower was not very powerful and the shower head was a bit floppy.
Overall a lovely hotel and really good value for money in this part of the Lake District. I would definitely stay here again

A beautiful hotel with stunning interiors lots of character and gorgeous views over the hills.
Positives : great location, there is plenty of parking space you can take dogs, rooms are immaculate and the staff are friendly can't do enough for you. Good choice of Continental food, cereals and fruit in a morning.
Negatives : breakfast staff need to have more attention to detail when delivering guests orders, while we were there some guests got there drinks after there meal was served not before when they first sat down and another couple were served there main meal before they had there starters.
Big negative : breakfast hot food (bacon, sausage etc) wasn't hot it was just about warm.

The Perfect romantic retreat.

We have been here twice and both times has been very enjoyable.. can’t fault it, hotel is spotless, staff are very attentive, food is quality and so is the service, rooms are comfy and very clean, 5 minute drive to Windermere and Bowness & 15 minutes from Ambleside!

This hotel was probably one of the best hotels we've stayed in and we really enjoyed our trip. We stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed breakfast every morning, two nights of dinner and an afternoon tea.

Food, despite being on the pricey side, is reflected in the quality. Lovely bacon for breakfast and probably the best steak and ale pie I've ever had.

The rooms were very clean and the beds were extremely comfortable. I even tried to get one of the mattresses back home but sadly they're only for businesses! Each day if you were out of amenities you just filled in a form and found them hanging on your door when you returned later that day. We slept so well and the rooms are so well soundproofed we couldn't hear those below or next to us.

We had a lovely stay and were very sad to leave.

We had a lovely stay here, the hotel is in a fantastic setting and is well kept and very clean throughout.

What really stood out to us was the service which was excellent from start to finish and could not be faulted.

Breakfast was fantastic with a wide choice. They also had gluten free bread which was appreciated.

If I were to be very picky I would say that the wooden furniture in our room (wardrobe, desk and bedside tables) was looking a little tired and getting ready for renewal. By contrast the bathroom looked pretty much brand new so the hotel are clearly working their way through and I'm sure the furniture is on the list!

We would stay here again in a heartbeat and hope to be back soon.

The first night we were faced with several big flys in the room. The were lifeless, which indicates they had been in the room for quiet some time. I am 8 weeks pregnant and due to the trains being delayed we missed dinner by 10mins, my partner explained this to the staff there, however they did not care to offer anything they had. All online takeouts were not delivering which meant I went to bed on an empty stomach. They could have offered fruit or whatever they had but instead we were turnt away. The pictures on the Expedia app Are very deceiving, the hotel is very tired and for £200 a stay I expected more. Our bed was two single mattresses combined to make a double which was very uncomfortable. Overall I feel very disappointed and let down.

Beautiful hotel

The hotel is beautiful. Set in stunning grounds with amazingly picturesque views. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The food was first class with a fabulous breakfast choice. Our room was a good size with a huge bed and very new modern bathroom, bath was wonderfully deep.
The only small criticism was the placing of the mirror in the bedroom, made drying or styling hair very awkward but this seems to be an issue with lots of hotels not thinking about people being able to dry hair in front of a mirror.
They were very friendly with our dog and didn’t make us feel uncomfortable for having him with us.
All in all a really lovely hotel. Definitely go again and would eat in the hotel more.

Hotel ok but stayed at better

The Hotel was ok ordered cheese and onion sandwich and they brought cheese and pickle guy said thats how it comes but when I said I didn't like pickle he managed to change it. View from bedroom amazing but room small no dressing table, had to stand to see through mirror when drying hair. Light fitting full of cobwebs. Food good plenty of it.

Absolutely amazing in all respects.

Stayed as a couple for 3 nights, wish we were there for longer. Everything about Merewood was perfect, the decor is gorgeous, the views from the front and patio are beautiful and it's spotlessly clean. We had room 8, after requesting it, which doesn't have a view (we weren't bothered about that) but it is a generous size and we liked the decoration.
The staff at Merewood are in my experience some of the best I've ever met, all super friendy, knowledgable and most importantly, they're happy! You can tell they really enjoy being at Merewood are great to talk to.
The food at Merewood is also fantastic in both restaturants. The tasting menu with matched wine flight in the Arboreal restaurant is completely worth it for the entire experience. I think, Ramon was his name, explained every dish and the paired wine brilliantly and ranks as the best meal I've ever had. It's full of surprises from start to finish, each dish is innovative and cooked to perfection. It was obvious immediately to us, the Merewood chef and his team seriously know how to cook. The cooked breakfasts and dinners in the Grill restaurant all perfect and delicious also. Absolutely loved the bar also, very well stocked, great beers, a wall of well and lesser known gins and whiskeys, and it's a beuatiful well looked after room.
Overall this is one beautiful hotel, in a great location between Windermere and Ambleside, 5 star service, even better food. Will definitely be booking again.

The room was smaller than we expected with a very small bed, poor lighting with mirrors in the most awkward positions for hair drying and applying makeup etc. The view from the window was excellent. TV was small and although we had a Nespresso machine Nespresso capsules were not used. Dinner was excellent in Arboreal with some truly lovely flavours and excellent presentation. Wine list was not to our taste with New World wines dominating.

Lovely stay!

Faultless in terms of service, atmosphere, views and character. Cream teas in front of large open fires on a cold November day - bliss! Lovely Bar area and other reception rooms. Delicious breakfast, Our rooms were a bit ‘tired’ though (Grotty, draughty window frames, wallpaper and bathroom need a refurb) and our room was above the kitchens where the noise from fans were intrusive until 10pm (which wasn’t such a problem) but then began again early in the morning which was a bit more disturbing. Beds huge and comfortable. We’d definitely go back. No lift so limited access for those with a disability.

Staff helped make this a pleasant stay.

Staff were friendly and helpful but system required you to summon them to the reception desk or bar from the dinning room for service.

Room was comfortable but without enough thought to giving you enough surface space to dry your hair or Dom your make up.

Decor a little tired.

Grill menu a little limited but food was good, however I am pleased we were only eating a one night as I would soon run out of options. Daily specials would be a good idea.

Mixed experience

Need to qualify this feedback as it is based on one night, room only late booked, and ‘only two rooms left’ information. So room was at the top of the hotel and overlooked some sheds. The hotel was as seen in photos and overall very comfortable with great lounges and lovely views and garden areas. The staff were friendly and helpful.
However, unfortunately, the evening meal
was a car crash. It has two restaurants one gourmet with 7 course meal, and the other still attractive restaurant the Grille where we ate. Starters were ok, but our Mains were
an over priced car crash. It could have
been an off-day, so advice is just be ready to send back.

Beautiful hotel, the rooms were clean. A nice touch was the little teddy left on the bed, made my little girls day. The grounds were well kept, with access to the woods around. Maybe they could put something in the grounds for the kids to play on? Staff were friendly and attentive. My only grumble was the fact there was only one price for the breakfast, (menu, not buffet style). At £15 it is quite expensive, but for a family with kids who are a bit picky with their food, it is more so when the kids only have a bowl of cereal, a poached egg and some fruit. How about a price for the kids, or a reduced option? On the whole, this hotel is well recommended, just be aware though, it can be a bit of an experience getting from the bottom of the drive back onto the main road.
