Comfortable and very clean in a perfect location for Windermere and Bowness.
The welcome and Customer Service were outstanding and better than several places I’ve stayed at.
The Howbeck team really care.
Breakfast was great and again the customer service at breakfast was outstanding.

The Retreat.

If you’re looking for a relaxing, peaceful getaway, we highly recommend booking The Retreat.

From the moment we arrived, the friendly and helpful staff made us feel welcome. Our spacious room was equipped with great amenities, and we especially loved the spa bath with air bubbles the perfect way to unwind before bed.

In the morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast with plenty of options, served on our private patio, before taking a short walk into Windermere. Everything about our stay was just wonderful.

The Howbeck and Retreat Stay Review

There are a lot of different breakfast options, and the food is great especially the bacon in Eggs Benedict and the sourdough bread. The spa bath is great, and the bathroom is nice. The only problem is the extra bed is a bit too soft, and the bed is a bit too low. Access to transport is near, as Windermere Library bus stop is near (basically in front of the hotel!), so is Windermere Railway Station as it’s an 10 minute walk via High Street. Overall the stay is pretty good.

Weekend at the lakes

We absolutely loved staying here. Its a beautiful hotel. Our host was really lovely and the room was perfect. Would definitely stay here again. The location was just perfect. Only a short walk to lake Windermere.

Fabulous luxury in amazing place

Fabulous Hotel. So warm comfortable and welcoming. Rooms were high standard. Bath with jets was lovely after a walk.
Breakfast....too much to eat and so delicious! Staff attentive and friendly.

The hotel is in a great location for easy access to Windermere. The pool was a short drive away, and as we were there for only a couple of nights we didn't get to use it.
The manager was very friendly and helpful. Our bed was comfortable and the shower was lovely. Would be very happy to stay there again on our next visit to Windermere.

Superb, but careful you don't slip in the shower.

Excellent place to stay. Short walk from Windermere town and the shops and restaurants there. Gorgeous property, comfortable beds and the breakfast was excellent.

Only complaint was the bathrooms. Very tall tub walls and very slick tub surface with no non-slip shower/tub mats, so it was a miracle I didn't slip and didn't get seriously hurt when taking a shower.

Good location, able to access Lake Windermere and surrounding areas easily. Very comfortable bed and good space within room. Only draw back was room location on ground floor next to front door which affected our sleep on both nights due the noise from the other guests entering and a disagreement between two guests outside our window area and front door which required the police to be called to support staff. Would come back but not stay in that room.

Ideal location, a short walk into Windermere and then around 15-20 mins walk to Bowness.
Being able to leave the car at the hotel before and after check in is a bonus too.

Lovely staff as well and very accommodating with us having a baby. Would recommend and stay here again!

Winter Break

Lovely one night break, this was a last minute booking, after checking the reviews, we decide the Howbeck would be ideal for our needs. We stayed in Deepdale which is classed as a superior room, lots of the reviews mention spa baths, however this room only has a shower cubicle. This room is also at the front of the hotel, so there is traffic noise. The room was clean, and spacious. Arriving in February, we expected the radiators to be on, but they weren’t. so the room was colder than we expected. We presume they had been turned off by the previous guests.
The breakfast choice had to be made the night before, the Cumberland breakfast was enjoyable. The best thing about this hotel is the location , a few minutes walk into Windermere and 20 minutes walk into Bowness. Being able to leave the car in the hotel car park, after checking out was a bonus.

Lovely hotel in the lakes. Fantastic place to explore Windermere. We had a fabulous spa bath in our room which we very much enjoyed. The only thing that slightly let us down was an overly soft mattress for our taste but would still absolutely stay again!

Nice, clean property close to local shops and restaurants. 5 minute drive to the lake. Really good breakfast. Room in good condition and comfortable bed. Free wifi available in the room. Had expected the property to be a bit bigger then what it was. Getting to the parking area a bit tight. Didn't use the Choices spa/gym area which is available within 5-10 min drive. The room we were given did not at all look like the picture. The room was ok but not 5 star rating it needed some DIY or TLC doing and for a family room the nude pictures were a little unexpected, especially when your six year old asked about the naked ladies.lol

The staff and the atmosphere really made us feel welcome and the breakfast was a lovely start to the day ahead. So extra bonus points for the staff at Howbeck Hotel, thats what makes it a 5 star hotel.

They had an honesty bar within the lounge which we had never come across before and thought this was a lovely idea.

Our mistake

We goofed! Have traveled the world for fifty years. It is a guest house not a hotel. Lady at the desk and in charge was wonderful. The site was not suitable for 80 year olds. Left early, leaving two nights payment on the table. If you visit the Lake District do not pick a Bank Holiday!

Friendly staff, close enough to the station, around 20 min on foot to the lake.
We stayed in the ground floor, so we couldn't sleep with the windows open. The room was clean, had a queen bed and an extra single bed, the breakfast was cooked to order. Must specify your dietery needs beforehand though.
Overall good experience.

Location, food, service .. quality of hotel made our weekend away fantastic on all accounts would recommend again and again .. saw one review that complained about a slow toaster !! Well really !! This place is a gem right in the centre of Windermere ... this would be my first choice again on a visit ... many thanks to all the staff ..

Really nice stay.

Loved the hotel a really nice house, cute clean rooms each with their own name. A nice common room with an honour bar filled with wines cocktails and soft drinks. A helpful staff, and wonderful breakfast.

The only downsides was the street traffic can be a bit much. Would love to doubleglaze the bedroom windows. And the rooms have no individual air control so sleeping a tad uncomfortable. Could have used a fan.
