Will start with the negatives first.

1. Parking after I booked was £25 per night which you don't have to go with, opted for parking in Glebe Road for £21.60 for 3 days which is a 5 minute walk from the hotel, all amenities are within a 5 minute walk from the hotel so no need to drive anywhere.
2. Breakfast was nice but most of the options on the menu are with a £5 supplement added on top if you've already paid for B&B.
3. Spa facilities are not what you would expect for the price, consists of a swimming pool and a place to receive treatments nothing more, little disappointing if I'm honest.
These are the only 3 negatives.

Hotel very clean and the room we booked was very nice, staff were really friendly.
We didn't have food in the hotel apart from breakfast so can not comment on this or drinks as we enjoyed the restaurants and bars within walking distance from the hotel, atmosphere around the area was brilliant.
Already looking at booking our next stay and wouldn't hesitate staying at the Macdonald Old England again apart from the first three negatives hotel was really nice.

Was a bit sceptical after reading some reviews but our experience was brilliant.

Breakfast was quite a poor standard.
Improve variety of everything and increase the stations.
Install a decent coffee machine to give a variety of drinks rather than the insanely strong pot of coffee that was too strong to stir never mind drink.
Install toasters and bread station with bread loaf selection and artisanal rolls.
Hot trays with large scale food production rather than individual serve to table.
Lose the tinned fruit and serve fresh produce.
It’s mean and outdated.
Guests expect a very good breakfast and this was not.

Good afternoon,

I am sending an email in regards to my stay at the Macdonald Old England Hotel and Spa last night, checking out this morning where we had 2 bedrooms. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing and fell well below the standard expected of your hotel.

Throughout the night, we were subjected to persistent loud pigeon cooing and repeated thudding against the window, which was jammed shut and very dirty. Although bird deterrent spikes were fitted to the window still, a section was clearly broken or missing, allowing pigeons and black birds to sit there throughout the night, repeatedly banging against the window and causing constant noise. This disturbance continued for hours and made sleep almost impossible.

In addition to this, there were loud banging noises from downstairs during the early hours, as well as clearly intoxicated guests causing significant disruption in the hallway at around 2:00 am.

The combined impact of these issues resulted in a severely broken night’s sleep. A quiet, comfortable room is a basic expectation, and the level of disruption experienced was completely unacceptable.

We are extremely unhappy with this stay and feel it represents a failure in both guest management and basic maintenance. Given the circumstances, I am requesting a full refund for the night.

I would appreciate this matter being taken seriously and look forward to your prompt response.

We booked our stay to enjoy the pool and spa facilities. On arrival, we found the pool was extremely cold due to a boiler fault and unusable. We were not informed of this before arrival or at check-in. This significantly affected our stay and meant the break did not meet expectations. we had a wonderful stay with our grandchildren in December, the hotel was beautiful and the seasonal decorations where truly spectacular. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and our room was fabulous with a queen size bed as well as bunk beds for the children.
The dining room was beautiful, spacious and spotlessly clean with wonderful views of the lake. Would 100% stay here again.

This hotel hasn’t got anything, in toiletries they just had shower gel, on asking about dental kit and moisturiser, staff just said there is a Tesco nearby go and buy from there. Plus they charged £25 per night for parking, proper London price in off peak time. Location is good, everything else is rip-off. Please go only if you get at very low price

Room was a good size, limited tv for price but clean & tidy. Staff in the breakfast area lacked training and supervision. Service was slow and awful, buffet style not what I would want or expect from a hotel at this pice range! Parking at £25 per night! Didn’t pay it. I’m fortunately we couldn’t get a lake view room, which would have been ok as the view from the over priced bar was lovely, unfortunately the room allocated to us was just above the loading bay with delivery’s coming and going all day. Very disappointing!

Staff really good but disgusted with how much the room we booked was in regards to what the brochure showed. This hotel is an average 3 star. Nowhere near a 4 star as it is advertised. We payed over 700 POUNDS. to be placed in a room that basically i have stayed in better Travelodges !!!!!!! For 2 nights !!!!!!. Macdonald you should be ashamed !!!! Will never stay here again and will definately tell anyone who asks to go elsewhere. And on top of the RIDICULOUS pricing you HAVE to pay a ridiculous 50 POUNDS A DAY for parking which is a way away from this ridiculous example of a 4 star hotel. Oh well lesson learned.

The room was very tired and in need of a refurbish. The bed pleather was so old and scuffed. No fridge in the room for a hotel of this price. We had an upgrade and the robes were well washed out and greyish. No slippers ! We were told we could walk to the spa but we had to go to reception and ask for slippers. Not enough loungers round the pool. The car park was not on the hotel grounds and £25 a day is so expensive. We wouldn’t return!!! The staff were lovely

The hotel generally is in real need of some money spending on it and standards have declined significantly in the 4 or so years since we last stayed here.

Booked a 2 night stay here , espically for the swimming pool for my daughter , this could not be used due to it under maintenance and it was freezing , this should have been stated when booking as i would not have chosen for my stay , my daughters bed was on a slope in the bedroom which is dangerous , not normally one for having a negative complaint but i feel for what we paid for this we would have went else were with working facilities , expedia contacted hotel but no joy with a reimbursement .

I would love to give this hotel a 5 star review as I had the best time and would definitely go back. It’s a stunning building in an ideal area (except the nearby clubs- it’s a bit lively at night which I wasnt expecting) But, breakfast was a real disappointment. Long queues (we gave up one day and paid to eat out) and not the best quality of full English.
Dinner was lovely- except the receptionist I called to book us in with forgot to make our reservation on both nights so struggled to get a table the second night. There were a few system problems which I think left reception a bit overwhelmed. All but one was super helpful. The one that was a bit surly and rude just needs to watch her manners a little.
Other than a few small moans I adored the hotel and will definitely be back

We had a lovely stay for our 25th Wedding Anniversary, we upgraded our room to Super Deluxe which was very spacious and had a great view of the lake. A card was left in our room wishing us a happy anniversary which was a nice touch. Perfect location, breakfast was good and staff were exceptional. Our room wasn’t ready until 4 which is what the hotel states as check in time, this is a bit later than most hotels but we enjoyed a drink at the bar while we waited. Overall a lovely relaxing stay and we would definitely return.

Lovely stay . The location is beautiful overlooking the lake. The room was big and nice although quite dark as the window was quite small . Spa good but not much choice only 2 steam rooms and swimming pool. Nice seating on the balcony from spa. Breakfast was good although the portion was quite small . That is my husband opinion 😄. The only thing I didn't like was to pay £25 for parking. I think it is quite a lots a specially that the hotel is not cheap . So when you spend £200 for room you not expecting this .

The hotel is a lovely hotel in fantastic settings on the edge of Lake Windermere, and the staff were helpful friendly and accommodating. Small gripe is they advertise the hotel as having parking which is always a plus in the Lakes, but they don’t tell you it’s at £25 per night which I thought was a little over priced given what you pay to stay at the hotel. Also be aware of the drinks in the bar as they are well overpriced compared to most places and bars outside the hotel.

The room itself was clean and comfortable, which we appreciated. However, there were very few plug sockets available, which made things a little inconvenient.

The car parking charge felt excessive, especially given that the parking did not feel as secure as advertised. The EV charging facilities were also disappointing: there were only a few chargers available, and they were difficult to access. On one occasion, an EV charger was blocked by a non-EV vehicle. We reported this to staff, who acknowledged it belonged to a staff member and said it would be moved, but unfortunately nothing was done.

Overall, while the room was fine, the parking and EV facilities let the stay down.

We had a nice room with a great view on the 2nd floor in the main part of the building.
We requested a room change as the extention to the hotel has no lift & we were originally given a room on the lower ground floor. The change was made possible by Aura on reception who was very helpful.
The room has a lovely bathroom, comfy bed, iron/ironing board & a fan in the bedroom, there is no air-conditioning or fridge in the room.
Unfortunately we found breakfast lacking, the service was good but the continental choice was limited & the cooked breakfast/drinks were lukewarm & average at best.
Overall we had a nice stay the hotel is clean with friendly helpful staff but the hotel looks tired & would benefit from replacement carpet's & terrace furniture.

Our room was very good, clean and comfortable. The bed and pillows were way too soft, though - we were glad to get back home to our own bed.
The staff were great - immediately fixing any problems we had.
Nice pool and steam and sauna
The food was excellent, but unfortunately we couldn't get butter with our breakfast - they only had vegetarian spread.
The corridor carpets need replacing and we had to go past lots of service/cleaning trolleys permanently lining the corridors, which I don't know if that meets H&S standards, but they could have used one of the empty rooms to keep them in.

We didn't park in the hotel car park but on Glebe Road which was a fifth of the price.

This is a lovely hotel in a great location. My room was gorgeous and had the best nights sleep I’ve had in years, as the room is sound proofed. The staff are really friendly and helpful.
Just a few things to be aware of. This hotel is quite expensive to book, and it’s a little cheeky they charge an Additional cost for parking, £25 for the night. It does not have aircon so is quite warm. The food and drink are overpriced. (Recommend going elsewhere) However, it is a lovely hotel and you can’t beat the location

So firstly on a positive the location is great. On arrival we asked if we could park & we’re told we must pay an extra £25 for the hotel car park despite not valet involved, we brought our bags inside & walked back in the rain. It wasn’t far but still not expected. We had to pay on the spot.

Location a big plus for this hotel. At over £200 per night it’s well overpriced for what it is. It has a spa and pool which was a big reason why we booked this vs other hotels but after booking got a mail about stay advising kids not allowed in pool after 5pm which was around when we arrived. Mailed hotel about this before arrival but no reply. Breakfast ok but not fantastic, service a little slow. No air con in room, tv not great and £25 for over night parking!

I have been here before and although the prices increase the.hotel is getting tired. Sandra and the other lady on reception like before were exceptional but its a shame the bar staff and restaurant are not so good. The views make this hotel but its dated and the windows need cleaning. Breakfast took over 15 minutes to be shown to our seat and the fruit and pastries were empty and no glasses with very little juice. Breakfast was delivered ok but not the best.

I dont like giving bad reviews but value for money it rates a 4/10.

Also £25 to park which is overpwiced as well.

The booking Inn was excellent the woman at the front desk was excellent very comfortable with a we actually got in early due to the room being ready which we did not expect the room was very big and the bed which I expected the shower tray add a big brown stain on it which I thought it hadn't been cleaned correctly the shower hose whilst damaged I reported this the breakfast was not to standard the waiters looked very untidy the evening meal I did not enjoy at all to say how much I paid for the meal not very good at all I'm sorry but it was not what I expected in McDonald's ins I have been up north and down South and stayed in the inns but this one let the side down 👎

Charming Escape in the Heart of the Lakes

We recently spent three nights at The Mcdonald Hotel during a short getaway to the Lake District, and we honestly couldn’t have asked for a better stay. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth — the kind that immediately sets the tone for a relaxing, memorable break.

The Room:
We stayed in one of their lake-facing rooms, and waking up each morning to that view? Absolutely dreamy. The room was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated with soft, calming tones, and had just the right blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. The bed was incredibly comfortable.

The Food:
Breakfast each morning was a treat. A choice of hearty Cumbrian classics or lighter options, all made fresh and served in the loveldining room with views of the water. We especially loved the perfect poached eggs.

The Location:
The Hotel is perfectly situated — tucked away enough to feel peaceful and secluded, but still within easy walking distance to the local shops and tourist areas and some incredible walking trails. We spent our days hiking, boating, and wandering through quaint villages with just the right number of tea shops and pubs. The room was spacious and clean, it was way too hot-the noise from the kitchen below was unbearable, constant droning from there and deliveries start at 6am, 2 nights without sleep isnt good. First day breakfast was incorrect and inedible, second day despite asking twice we we didnt even get breakfast - a pot of tea turned up made with cold water, how can you get it so wrong?? The reception staff were very professional, kitchen and waiting on staff were untrained, impolite and looked lost. One guy with short grey hair and glasses deserves credit as he was the only one who looked like he wanted to work there. Avoid at all costs.

Only issue is the offsite parking. Could be quite awkward & if you use the hotel site it’s a ridiculous price of £25 per day. Not a great management decision in the tough hotel competition, especially as it is an open car park with just a security barrier.
The local car park was just £7.00 per day. Safe & quiet. Felt happy to leave car there for a couple of days

The worst hotel we stayed in in a long time.
1. The parking is 25 per night - rip off.
2. They don't respond to messages.
3.The breakfast was sad and the service was slow. We had to wait 10 minutes to be sat down despite many empty tables (if you have mobility issues or are heavily pregnant, it's frustrating).
4. Food was unimpressive especially if you have dietry requirements. Our vegan breakfast was anemic and they didn't have dairy free butter/margarine.
The waiters didn't bother cleaning the empty plates, so we had to pile them up.
5. The rooms were unbearably hot.
6. Bed and pillows were really uncomfortable.
7. If your room faces the street, be prepared for drunk people shouting and fighting underneath your window (we would have paid more had we known).
8. Bathrooms are really dated.
9. The water mixer wasn't working properly so we had cold and hot water coming out of the shower simultaneously.

It's not a 4 star hotel. It's zero stars really. We wouldn't recommend and would never come back.

Lovely stay but avoid breakfast

We stayed in a family suite. The room was great as were the grounds of the hotel. The only thing that let down our stay was breakfast. Even though we had to book our time slot we stood in a long queue to gain access and waited for quite a while before a staff member came to assist. Once seated we ordered tea/coffee and toast, after approx 15 mins we were then asked what hot breakfast we would like- we still hadn’t received our tea or toast. By the time we eventually got our breakfast 40 mins after we entered our tea was cold.

Hotel in a prime position beside Windermere .
Comfortable rooms , very friendly staff . Good breakfast .
Furnishings a bit tired I am afraid .
It’s our second stay and we will be back.
Only downside really for us is our adult son is wheelchair bound and although his room was brilliantly arranged for him the lift near his room was broken so he could not get in and out of the room without the help of a strong person .

On arrival the hotel was very cold.The room was freezing and so cold had to ring reception for extra blankets and to turn heating on. The spa was nice but had no towels on arrival and they refused to change my robe as it was wet for the following day very strange. Just wasn’t that feel of luxury stay.breakfast was poor with a small full English and only spreadable butter option.

Beautiful view but the room was very tired and needs updating. ( see pictures ) Old furniture which is worn away - headboard worn away - window needs repairing.
Word of warning parking is £25 !!!!
Not a secure car park as barrier rises on exit so anyone could exit with your car …
Breakfast was ok - not sure why some items on the menu are a £5 supplement … seems steep when you’re paying premium price already.
Overall an OK Hotel - paying for the Hotel being in the middle of Bowness not the facilities as they need a refurb

Great location restaurant, lounge and bar overlooking the lake. Room lovely very comfortable bed & pillows.
Thought the surcharge on certain breakfast items a bit unnecessary when paying £200 per night. Drinks expensive in the bar but that’s normal these days !

A stay where every little thing was wrong

Arrived at the hotel to be informed the car park was 4 streets away in an open car park. Although it needed a fob to raise the barrier on entry you could just drive at the barrier to exit. As the car park was completely open this was in no way secure. On the subject of the fob, these had to be collected and returned to reception each time you returned with your car, which required driving to the hotel, parking on the street outside, collecting the fob, then drive to parking. Madness. Especially with the hotel advertised as having parking. The £25 parking fee was more expensive than some of the town car parks. Would question what I was paying for???

On to the room. That should never have been a room. A box room at the top of a flight of stairs. Badly fitted door so every person passing or using the stairs could be heard. As this was the main staircase didn’t exactly lead to a relaxing stay.

Simple things like tv remote missing. No way of contacting front desk or reception. Resorted to ringing the hotel on mobile. Reception no answer. Walked down to reception. Staff just stood there oblivious to phone call. Asked about the remote. Told they’d check the spare stock and sort it. Nothing further heard on this.

The looked to order room service, told to go to bar, fair enough, ordered at the bar. Pizza and Chips. Turned up a while later c 30-40 minutes. Chips fine. Pizza base not cooked.

On check in I’d asked about the pool to be told not open hours advertised. CO 2day early!

Service was excellent. Staff on reception was beyond helpful, food was astonishing having breakfast, afternoon tea and an evening meal in the hotel restaurant and all the food was the highest quality with fantastic hosts and waiting staff. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Beautiful views from the room, the lounge, the restaurant and the outdoor seating areas overlooking the lake. Overall a breathtaking area with the hotel complimenting the area incredibly well. Spa treatments to top off the weekend away. Couldn’t recommend enough.

-Clean and quiet hotel located in great central area overlooking the lake.
-Room was lovely.
-Great breakfast.

Bad things

- £25 per day for parking in their own car park 5min walk away feels like a rip off.
-Over sensitive fire alarm system meaning 1 alarm going off per day of our stay. No real communication from staff, guests were keeping each other updated from the little bits we heard.
-Pool was not warm.
-Shower was awful. Couldn’t maintain an even temperature and had no overhead shower.

A little disappointed:(

Definitely needs more staff. Plumbing shocking and old pipes with a noise coming from sink. Also, the shower head faces wall and can’t move it into place. Food wise, eggs Benedict was raw and not worth the extra £5. However, not bad to say it was free with the stay. Bed very comfortable and warm, had a good night sleep. Overall an okay experience but expected more for the price.
