Have stayed at Briery Wood many times over the last 7 years or so. Consistently good, spotless bathrooms, fabulous breakfast and really excellent restaurant. Reasonably priced for the terrific standard. But the staff are exceptional. Friendly, professional and well trained. We like that they keep the staff on through the winter and chatting with the housekeeper found she is in her 21st year. Many of the others there 10 years +. That says a lot about a business for me. Also very dog friendly, plenty of parking and stunning gardens to walk your pooch x

I was very disappointed after a 7 hour drive (arrived 17:00ish) to find as a resident I could not use the Restaurant as I had not booked and that the bar did not offer evening 'lighter meals'. The first night (Thursday) there was a party in the function room, if only the staff had thought to put us in a room that was not the one over the function. Apart from these niggles which I shared with the manager - the hotel was beautifully located and we enjoyed the peace when weddings were not on. So if booking it is worth checking if functions are taking place...

The best nights sleep!

We had an amazing stay at Briery wood. Though we only stayed one night, it was one of the most relaxing nights we have had in a while and we both slept SO well! The bed was extremely comfy and the room had lots of little details that made our stay feel a little extra special- including a powerful fan perfect for the warmer weather, two pillows each as standard, lots of tea and coffee options & complimentary biscuits!

The bar area was very pretty and breakfast was a worthwhile addition (pastries and fruit in addition to a cooked breakfast off of a small menu). The bathroom was a little dated but clean and pretty and the shower was powerful.

Though smaller than the Cragwood sister hotel, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again in future.

This is a quaint hotel that is nicely decorated. Unfortunately, despite asking for quiet rooms, we were given rooms in the main hallway where everyone has to pass by to get in and out of the hotel and get to and from breakfast. The hotel staff also use the foyer right across from these rooms to collect all of the used items from rooms they are cleaning so it was extremely noisy, especially in the morning. The staff are completely oblivious to this. Breakfast wasn't memorable and when they're fully booked, it's almost impossible to move around the dining room.

This is a lovely, quiet hotel on Lake Windermere. Highlights were the freshly cooked breakfast, quiet grounds, and friendly staff throughout our 3 night stay. We also very much enjoyed eating dinner in the hotel one evening, where the food was of high quality.

Some areas perhaps would have benefitted from more attention based on the price we paid and the high standard of the other reviews on Expedia. These were:

The road junction into the property is challenging at best and dangerous at worst (we witnessed a near miss on one occasion). Would suggest at the very least a mirror is installed so you can see traffic coming from the right

There is no fridge in the room which, if you’re going for walks, is a little annoying if you want to be able to take a chilled drink out with you.

There are no additional facilities such as a gym or spa. We knew that when we booked it of course, but it’s still worth mentioning given the price.

A decidedly average hotel and not deserving of the good ratings on here. Average room, generally dated, nothing that feels 4*. Coffee machine in the room but no cups or pods. Nothing special and there are way better choices - which I regret not taking instead.

Grounds lovely , staff friendly overall . Rooms quite outdated - corner bath badly stained - electric shower no power - ran either cold or scolding hot . Tv didn’t work due to poor signal . Carpets stained Cooked breakfast was lovely . But the fresh fruit was melon and tinned grapefruit - very 70’s . Outside was planted with lovely spring bulbs -

Nice hotel, lovely grounds. Staff were super friendly and helpful and quickly solved an issue that we had. Restaurant and bar areas really nice and clean.

Uncomfortable bed and pillows. Linen not great. Walls are thin, can hear everyone and everything outside. Emergency lighting outside ‘garden rooms’ stays on all night making it look like it’s daylight all night long.

Bar prices and food a little too expensive.

Everything about this hotel is superb. The room is lovely and spacious with a big, super king bed. The bathroom bright and modern. This hotel is clearly very well looked after. The staff are incredibly polite and great at their jobs. The food... delicious, from starter through to dessert. I fully expect to return and look forward to doing so.

We stayed 2 nights here and loved it. We first met Martin when we checked in and he made it a great stay. He was always attentive and helpful. He managed to persuade us not only on breakfast but also on dinner both nights and we weren’t disappointed. The food was amazing.
We stayed in a garden room, so with our dog this was ideal as a door opened onto the garden with a table and chairs outside. The shower pressure wasn’t the best and we never did figure out how to turn on the bedside lights but the room was spacious and comfortable.
The only thing I felt was disappointing was how another guest was treated when her little dogs barked. We were sitting at breakfast in a separate room from people without dogs and someone must have complained about the dogs. The owners were asked to move to another room ( mid breakfast) . When I saw the dog owner later she was very upset. This is a dog friendly hotel so they shouldn’t have been asked to move. Someone with noisy or crying children wouldn’t have been asked to move. I think the guest complaining should have been moved. After all, we pay extra to have dogs there. This would put me off coming again with my dog.

Great ~ but……..

Beautiful hotel. Great staff.

At 7pm we were told the restaurant was fully booked throughout the night, and a booking was required ~ totally understand that BUT throughout the evening there were more empty tables than ones that were taken. I’m not sure why we weren’t granted a table but I guess, it’s their loss.

Nice night away

This was a fairly late booking and on the whole we had a great stay. The weather was kind and we were able to take a lovely 4 mile walk into Ambleside. The room was very comfortable in all respects. All of the staff that we interacted with were pleasant.

We had a very pleasant stay here. It’s a lovely building and comfortable place to relax and unwind and the afternoon tea we had was exceptional. We had an issue with lights in the bedroom constantly flickering that we reported to reception but it was only temporarily fixed as it reoccurred again later in our stay. Drinks from the bar were pricey. And make sure you ring the bell at the bar if you need service because waiting staff are constantly absent doing other things; maybe they were just shorthanded when we were there but that’s how it seemed. Cleaning staff were great.

A very nice break and hotel

Cheerful helpful receptionist who booked us in very quickly show us around the hotel and to our bedroom. We enjoyed a three course meal which was include in the hotel deal with highly recommend. We had a garden view bedroom number two which let out to the garden with tables and chairs. Bar prices were reasonable hotel staff with very helpful.

We have stayed before at the Brierywood, and also at the sister hotels the Cragwood and the Merewood. We have never had cause for complain. Staff are always friendly and attentive. Will be staying again.Hotel is handy for access to Ambleside, Windermere and Bowness for great choice of places to eat if you wish to on an evening. Even though meals at the hotel is excellent. I love the cooked breakfasts.

The hotel was beautiful and friendly. The staff were kind but their abilities in terms of the quality of service were lacking we were served flat champagne in a wine glass. After the main course we ordered 2 VSOP cognacs and 2 coffees. This order was repeated back to us by the waiter sadly 2 French coffees were delivered. On complaint, we were given the French coffees foc. Sad that the staff didn’t have the those necessary skill, as they were otherwise efficient and friendly.

More of a care home for elderly than a hotel

It was a nice stay. The receptionist was pleasant and morning breakfast staff were lovely. The room was clean, fresh and had everything we needed. The evening bar chap was u communicative, surly and borderline rude. It was clear that at 10.30 he just wanted us to go to bed and not dare to order a drink.
It’s a shame the whole place is quiet and sleeping by early evening. It felt more like a care home for elderly than a hotel.

The rooms were spotless and spacious with a large comfortable bed. Breakfast and dinner were both delicious with a variety of options. The staff were very friendly and attentive and went out of their way to ensure we had a great stay. We took our dog too and booked a garden view room which had its own door. This enabled us to take our dog straight outside when we needed to. The hotel is extremely dog friendly. We will definitely stay here again.

we Love staying here, the hotel is quiet and lovely, some lovely traditional features and although its not central exactly regards to walking it is a great place to stay.
The hotel is nice and the food is good, breakfast is great but what makes this hotel is the staff, they are the most pleasant, warm and welcoming staff from the lovely lad at the bar, Danny serving food and the reception staff are great too. this is why we go back - so many places to choose from in the lakes but the staff are just great and should be mentioned! Great Job - See you in Novemeber!

We love it here!

We have stayed at Briery Wood about ten times over the years. A fantastically run small hotel, welcoming and good value. The food is excellent whether you have breakfast, a la carte dinner or bar meal.

Almost 10/10 . The staff were faultless nothing was too much trouble all very helpful/ polite and welcoming, very dog friendly. The full breakfast we had in our room was again faultless good quality and very well cooked and hot . We stayed in a garden Room with our dog, excellent room again lovely and clean the housekeeper was happy very helpful. I would not stay in Room 1 if you go to bed early or are a light sleeper, but again the staff very helpful and we were moved. the carpet was beige/cream not very practical for keeping clean lucky we brought lots of towels . Also just check your bill, I was charged extra for vat, aparantly a computer error, again it was rectified . All in all a good stay.
