Beautiful location, but poor maintenance, safety hazards, lack of privacy, limited food options, and subpar service make this hotel fall short of five-star expectations. Would not recommend.

We stayed at this hotel over the Christmas break, and while the location was stunning right by the sea the overall experience was disappointing for a property advertised as five-star.

Lovely seaside location, peaceful and scenic, but

Bathrooms lacked locks, which is a major privacy issue for families or groups. Public toilets also had broken locks, leaving only one functional cubicle.
Shower taps were incorrectly labeled (hot/cold reversed), posing a burn risk. Shower hoses couldn’t handle water pressure, causing water to splash everywhere.
Long queues even during off-peak season. Food variety was poor repetitive menus with limited options, mostly fish. Basic items like hot water, forks, and knives frequently ran out.
Some staff seemed disengaged, and the manager was unhelpful and unfriendly, you could tell and hear they were complaining about her. Not good infront of dinning visitors but one can understand and also relate as they were really trying to help people to settle in for their meals but the kitchen staff and prior arrangements must have disappointed them and any proper prep would not have been done properly to avoid this disorderliness.
Broken locks, inadequate bathroom lighting, and poor attention to detail throughout the property, its a facilities manager job to look into

Our stay was overall very pleasant. The staff were great—friendly, attentive, and genuinely helpful. The rooms were large, spacious, and well-appointed, and we appreciated being accommodated for a room change to get a better view. The amount of closet space in the suite was also fantastic, which is a rare treat in most hotels.

The food was very good, especially the salads, which were fresh and full of flavour. Some of the meats, however, were a bit hit or miss—some lacked tenderness or depth of taste—but overall the dining experience was enjoyable. Would be nice to have real juices as well.

One area that could be improved is housekeeping. The cleaning style followed what I was told is more of an American approach, where the beds aren’t crisply made—more of a “cover pulled over” look. Once I realised that, I ended up making the bed myself to get it looking neater. There were also a few minor details missed, like wine stains on the table that hadn’t been wiped properly. If that’s the intended cleaning style, it might be helpful for guests to have some basic cleaning supplies available, though ideally, surfaces should just be cleaned as part of the service.

Location was walkable to beach and a close bolt/uber ride to old town albufeira.

Would only recommend if looking for a low end all-inclusive hotel stay.

Greated by a very friendly reception team. From then down hill! Greater for breakfast and lunch struggled to even ask for your room number, made to feel an inconvenience more interested in her phone and talking to colleagues. Evening great great remember our room number after 1 evening and greater with a big smile. Lady at the bar around the pool very welcoming. Hotel full off middle aged men playing golf and when not playing getting wasted on the all inclusive menu, felt at times like you were in the middle of stag parties when they weren’t playing golf. Not really appropriate for families and kids at this point. Hotel is now dated, visited years ago and apart from reception being updated the rooms are not, furniture and rooms are tired and need money spent updating. No tea and coffee facilities in the room, that’s not 5 stars! Sorry certainly not how I remember and won’t be going back! Lots of better hotels to choose from on that coastline trust me!

Very disappointed with this hotel definitely not 5star that’s for sure where do we start not enough bar staff small bars ran out of glasses and not even that busy so can’t get a drink in glass restaurant didn’t have much choice and not enough variety couldn’t even get a bottle of water on all inclusive or dark rum wasn’t aloud on all inclusive never known anything like it staff on bar in and out miserable and most of time 1 serving so having to Que for a while as they don’t hurry rooms were nice and spacious and were cleaned but didn’t even get water in room or have a kettle very poor all inclusive and definitely wouldn’t go back

We absolutely loved our stay at NAU São Rafael Suites in September. Everything — and I mean everything — was PERFECT! We spent peaceful days swimming in the sea, reading books, and enjoying the stunning design of the hotel as well as the natural beauty of Albufeira and the Marina.
Our suite (105, on the top floor) was spotless, spacious, and beautifully designed — it truly felt like a home away from home. The views were incredible, and the atmosphere was so calm and relaxing.
A special mention goes to the wonderful staff: incredibly warm, friendly, and always helpful. Their hospitality made all the difference and elevated our experience from great to unforgettable.
If you're looking for a peaceful environment, large rooms with amazing views, and genuine hospitality, you must stay here.
Massive thanks to the entire management team for a truly memorable vacation. We will definitely be back!

We stayed at the hotel as a group of friends in a triple connecting room, room 209. As we were getting closer to the trip, I was a little bit concerned about some of the negative reviews recently left on Google reviews; given the price, I didn’t go in to expect a platinum five star hotel, and in all honesty, I set my expectations a lot lower!
I needn’t have done this, we had a fantastic stay, Thursday to Sunday. The aesthetics as you approach the hotel had already started to put my mind at ease. The triple room was amazing and surpassed our expectations, three en suites, a huge balcony spanning the width too, we loved it. Clean, with everything you could need. No noise from adjoining rooms at all.

We had the premium all inclusive option which meant we had access to the spa, premium drinks options and could dine one night for free at the a la carte restaurant.

Would return and highly recommend!

Would skip this resort for my next trip

The Good:

1. Clean and spacious rooms – a key reason the reviewer chose this resort.
2. Free and easy parking – readily available with no hassle.
3. Fast and easy check-in – smooth arrival process.
4. Quality toiletries – included L'Occitane en Provence products.
5. Spacious mini fridge – good for storing essentials.
6. Friendly pool bartenders – described as nice and knowledgeable.
7. Friendly entertainment staff – added to the overall positive atmosphere.

The Bad:
1. Overpriced – did not meet expectations for the cost.
2. Room AC off at check-in – took 1.5 hours to cool down the room.
3. Beach towel policy changed mid-stay – limited to one towel per person from the third day onward; felt unhygienic.
4. Misleading “bottled water included” – only provided one bottle on the first day.
5. Room damage and cleanliness issues – bed and closet had visible damage; headboard was visibly dirty.
6. Exaggerated “sea view” – only a distant, partial view of the sea.
7. Poor food quality and variety – buffet was limited, unimpressive, and unclean.
8. Other local restaurants far superior – even fast food nearby was better than the hotel buffet.
9. Pest problem – flies and mosquitoes present throughout, even inside the restaurant.
10. No tissues/Kleenex in the room – had to purchase our own from local stores.
11. General disappointment – compared to experiences in Spain or Greece, this resort felt subpar and not generous or accommodating.

The food and service where acceptable but not 5*
No facilities in the room, no kettle, tea, coffee, sugar or milk. No fresh water daily only on arrival. The room was very basic not even cushions on the sofa. Balcony was small with the most uncomfortable chairs ever. No wonder no one sat on the balcony’s.
Loungers around the pool need to be replaced as dated, the pool wasn’t clean had green in the bottom in patches.
When asking for a taxi the hotel call a transfer company, they are around 3 to 4 euros more expensive. Best get a taxi number and call yourself!

Amazing hotel. Already 2nd time staying here. Front office team is amazing. They are very welcoming, friendly, professional. Huge thank you for such efforts to accommodate us in our room earlier. Room is huge, 2 rooms, 2 bathrooms, balcony, spacius,clean. Amazing service from housekeeping keeping our room clean. Loved the amenities in bathroom with branded L'Occitane products. Restaurant is great, food is super delicious, big varieties of different dishes. Loved the services at restaurant, all the staff is super attentive. 2 pools, plenty of space to stay around even if the hotel is fully booked. Good food at the snack bar by the pool. Loved the 'juice of the day', of course cocktails. Spa is good, worth to visit. Overall our stay was amazing, coming vack next year.

The hotel looks lovely online and for some this may be an exceptional option but for us, it was an unfortunate mistake. Upon arrival, the room had no power and maintenance needed to troubleshoot the issue. The pool was exceptionally cold. The hotel is lacking of signage to help find the way around. The beach is a hike and not as close as advertised. The beach is mostly seaweed with very little useable area. All inclusive means all things are included except what they exclude such as the sit down restaurant, drinks that aren’t in there all inclusive list, the golf simulator is 40 euro extra per person. The bar has no frozen drinks. No washcloths available for showering (which is common in some EU countries). The hotel is quite dated. The elevators many times were not working and when they were the buttons take a lot of force to engage. It’s very noisy on the 1st floor above the restaurant until at least 11pm as they cleanup and slide chairs across the floor. No eating food around the pool. As I say, this may be perfectly fine for some but comparing to many hotels we have visited, this is not for us and we can’t recommend.

Great stay, would say it’s a 4 star over a 5 star. There was a few attention to detail that were overlooked. Toilet by the pool messy and out of toilet roll, not checked regularly enough. Decking area in the pool bar needed jet washing. Some of the sun loungers needed an upgrade due to being stretched. It’s the little details that make Hotels 5 star. This was lacking a few of them. However overall a great Hotel, good location. Staff very good and all really friendly. Would have been nice to have been able to dine in both restaurants on the all inclusive even if you only offered one night in the Tapas restaurant so you could try it. Rooms are ready for an upgrade but entrance area and restaurant are lovely. Worth a visit!

Disappointing Stay at NAU Sao Rafael Suites

While the bedrooms at NAU Sao Rafael certainly offered a generous amount of space, unfortunately, the quality of the accommodations left much to be desired. The balcony doors proved to be a daily struggle, stiff and difficult to manoeuvre. Stepping onto the balcony itself was equally unappealing, as it was noticeably dirty and showed signs of disrepair, with elements appearing to be falling apart. Inside, the poor quality continued with the beds. One side of our bed had a significant structural issue, causing a noticeable slope that made for an uncomfortable night's sleep. Adding to this discomfort were the pillows, which offered virtually no support. When I raised this issue with the front desk, I was simply informed that no alternative pillows were available, which was quite disappointing. The bathrooms, while spacious, lacked any form of ventilation, the in-room fridge was out of order, with a freezer door that wouldn't close properly, resulting in any refrigerated items becoming frozen solid. The pools were indeed large, but sadly, they also suffered from poor quality. The sun loungers were filthy, and a number were broken. The pools were dirty, which deterred us from taking a swim. The food offered was of acceptable quality, although the repetitive nature of the meals became tiresome. On occasion, the fruit selection appeared to have been sitting for an extended period, becoming soggy and unappetising. The desserts, however, were a pleasant exception.

We enjoyed our stay and would consider returning.
Positives: good location, great spacious rooms in the sea view suite, fantastic breakfast, lunch and dinner. Staff were friendly and helpful. Shuttle runs to town free of charge.
Only negatives are: Not all-inclusive, only small selection of standard drinks and 2/3 cocktails. Paid entry into a small indoor pool, 4 person hot tub and sauna facilities. Gym is tiny but modern, fits about 2/3 people. A little smell in the rooms we believe from drains, although other than that super clean and smells lovely in hallways. Relatively expensive massages for what you get.

I booked this hotel based on the \"all-inclusive\" description as advised by Expedia. Upon arrival, I was notified that the all-inclusive option was not part of the offer, as \"all-inclusive\" was simply the name of the hotel! The manager advised that if we wanted the all-inclusive package—which is not usually offered during this peak time—an exception could be made at an additional charge per day. I expressed my concern about this being misleading advertising, and the manager stated that Expedia would need to be contacted regarding the misrepresentation. Can you please advise?

An amazing all inclusive hotel. Staff very friendly and professional. Food options on the bufet changed every time, even from lunch to dinner. Great selection of drinks, cocktails and fresh natural juices at the bar.
The only minus for us, was that we had to pay to use the indoor pool that in our opinion should be included, specially if you have to pay every day you want to go there.
Parking on site is plenty, and they have a free minibus shuttle service that will take you to the old town.
We will defenatly come back.

This was caused by only having one power socket on each side of the bed. So, the bed side lamps had to be unplugged for our phones. An extension lead would have sorted this.

It was ok. Bedroom was good, comfortable bed and good bathroom. The living room part of the suite was pretty bad, very uncomfortable furniture.

The food was mostly poor, even for buffet food. Breakfast was an exception and was pretty good. As we stayed for more than 4 nights we got a free booking at one of the \"restaurants\". The food came out the same quality as the buffet (poor). The tiramisu dessert was dire, like 2 bits of bland rubber. Eat out where possible.

One pool was closed for half of the 6 night stay and the other was only half full for 2-3 days but when they were fully functional they were good.

Staff were mostly indifferent to you with some exceptions of them actually caring you were there.

Cleaning service was good and front desc staff were friendly.

The beaches close by are nice and only a short walk away.

I was disappointed with the quality compared to the price. It feels like the price is high due to the room being a suite (quite needlessly as the suite aspect was very poor). For a similar price I would recommend VidaMar just 15-20 mins up the road (stayed there for a work trip before this stay). Better food, better room, nicer grounds, better beach access, and better quality of life improvements over NAU and all for a marginal increase in price (at the time of review).

If this was a few hundred pounds cheaper it might be a worth while stay but for the price it is I don't think I will be visiting again.

This is not a 5-star property. It’s a 3 star property. No proper gym at an all inclusive resort! The night entertainment is non existent and not an ideal place for children to keep them entertained. There is no room service after 11 pm and before that you get charged extra/higher priced menu for room delivery (never seen this before let alone in an all inclusive resort). Staff is average at the best and house keeping isn’t good. Find the advertisement on this property misleading.

Went with daughter and 2yr old granddaughter for a short break to get the sun.Arranged a private transfer only 40 minutes from airport.All inclusive was ideal for trying the good variety of food.Had staples of pizza and chips but had great local seafood and salads for a healthier option.It was great that our suite was a living room and a large bedroom with en suite shower above bath-great for a toddler .so she could go to bed and we could enjoy watching TV with a glass of wine.
Safe in room but no coffee/tea making facilities which I missed because often up at 6 and breakfast didn’t start till 7!
Children’s pool was ideal.I missed a gym.
Lovely area to walk around and not far from a small beach and 5 mins taxi to marina or 10 mins to old town and large lovely beach

I do not recommend NAU Sao Rafael Suites - All Inclusive hotel. First of all, the facilities are too old and there are too many unnecessary spaces. I arrived a little early and paid extra to upgrade to a sea view room. The view was nice, but the facilities inside the room were very outdated. The meal had a variety of seafood and meat, but the staff were generally unfriendly and many of them could not speak English.

There were many Chinese tour groups and golf groups staying at the hotel, and they were very noisy and disturbing. The sauna was also very old and could only accommodate a few people. The pool was cold and the water in the indoor swimming pool was also cold. It was difficult to use the sunbeds as they were always occupied.

Overall, the facilities were more like a 3-star hotel rather than a 5-star hotel. The hotel was noisy until late at night, and I could not get enough rest. During check-out, there were hardly any staff around, so I was able to stay for an extra two hours. I would not stay at this hotel again and I do not recommend it to others.

Loved our 2bed/2bath suite. Balcony was huge,plenty space for everyone to chill.
Comfiest beds and pillows, I've experienced in a hotel.
Food was plentiful and staff couldn't be more helpful.
Indoor pool was great, as wasn't quite warm enough to swim outdoors.
My only negative comment would be that the jacuzzi wasn't available during our stay. Would definitely love to go back.

Well worth a visit

We had a short stopover at this hotel. From the front the building perhaps doesn't look that great but the garden and pool area is beautiful. From the outdoor balcony upstairs you have sea views. The hotel is in a quiet area with a short walk to the nearest beach. Well worth a visit for couples and families.

The actual rooms dont have ceiling light only lamp so it was very hard to put make up on. The hotel was fully inclusive which was expensive however there were no facilities to keep us occupied for example there was no gym no golf course basically nothing to do other than sit at the poolside. Entertainment was boring. Food was the same foods every single day which got very boring. Staff were lovely though

We very much enjoyed our stay here. Our 2 bedroom unit was quite nice with comfy beds and a huge balcony which could have been even more amazing had there been enough loungers for the 3 of us. I also wish there had been some extra seating in our rooms. Other than one desk chair, there was nothing so we were stuck sitting on the beds. I was quite happy with the food quality and had no problem finding something that suited me. The service was outstanding everywhere we went. The pool area is very quiet, no music or activities so if you like tunes, you might want to pack a portable speaker. The beach is close by and beautiful. We used the shuttle service to go into town one day and were very glad we were staying where we were, it was super touristy!

The beachfront 2 bedroom two bathrooms was lovely. No hot tub to relax in during our stay. The buffet restaurant food was not hot. The music in the lounge ended to early . The reception was exceptional with the assistance from Nuno Rocha and Joao Cunhd . Bartender Monday night lounge with the live music was very welcoming.

In general the place is very nice, with a super nice view of the ocean and Funchal, the complex and the villa were amazing only one thing to mention, there was no tv on the rooms, this is very important for me, also there was no gym on the complex , only an small, tiny place at the golf club that was very expensive for the service.

Buffet food was good; especially the bbq chicken lunch and the Italian restaurant was good too.

The food was generally on the same rotation so there was the same food every other day.
The larger pool didn’t seem to be cleaned as there was lots of debris in the pool that was there for the entirety of our stay.

I would not class this hotel as a 5 star, it is more like a 3.5! For an all inclusive you Are very limited to the food and drink you can have. All the staff seemed miserable, it’s a shame as the hotel has the potential to be very nice!!

The staff were the epitome of professionalism and friendliness. Always willing to help with a smile. The kids club play leaders (as my son called them) deserves an extra mention. It never appeared just to be a job for them, they just came across as genuinely wanting to play with the kids and have fun! The spa was great too -and having 3 full sized pools and a baby one meant it never felt crowded

Great hotel for families, 3 lovely pools, wonderful friendly Kids Club staff and amenities. An easy 10 min walk to a lovely beach. The hotel staff are very helpful and the restaurants perfect for a week’s stay - extensive buffet with the option of an a la carte restaurant 2 days out of 7 which was a nice change.
Our suite was large and very clean. We had a really good holiday here!

Kids club was super catered for our 11, 10, 9 and 8 year olds. Fabulous food. Very helpful staff. Great activities - archery, capoeira, aqua Zumba, quizzes, night entertainment! Would highly recommend!

Food was super. Not so packed around the pool like other hotels. No queuing for meals. Lacked a little on activities. A 10 minute walk from two beautiful beaches. A little bit remote though, one shop and a bar local, but besides that, a €10 taxi ride to the oldtown. There is a hotel shuttle, but only 2/3 runs a day. I was really very happy overall with this hotel and would recommend it.

The food was the same every night, the service in the restaurant really good, to make reservation a la carta is not avaluable, even when i stay for 7 nights always the reservations was full, a d the excursión no good information a d when you want to pay they want only cash, not acceptable

Nice area, great little hotel, easy walk to the beach, pools clean and not congested, finding sunbeds never an issue, with lots of shade and parasols available. Tennis facilities ok with decent rackets and balls. Reception really helpful. Food lovely. Hotel layout a bit confusing but got it eventually. What look like fire doors are actually ways out, better signage would have helped.

Excellent hotel spacious rooms with plenty bathrooms and wardrobes. Very friendly helpful staff. Food was good quality and always refreshed throughout mealtimes although we still found food was best within the first hour and half at mealtimes. We had one not so good meal but it was at 9.45pm when mealtime finished at 10pm. Lovely quaint beach only a 5 min walk from hotel. Lots of activities for kids club and even our 13 year old joined in. The air conditioning actually works and would make the room like an ice bucket if that’s what you like. Overall excellent value and very family oriented hotel we will 100% be back, loved every minute.
