I am a very non-picky person, and it is extremely rare for me to leave a negative review. This probably won't affect anyone else but: Our room, the common area, and I assume all the other rooms on that floor were painted the previous day. In spite of the hotel telling us numerous times that the room was ventilated longer than the recommended time, and it was a special no smell paint, and us leaving the window open for more than an hour, we still developed headaches from the chemical smell within 10 minutes of being in the room. We asked if we could be relocated and they said they could not. We got a hotel room at a different hotel that night and came back the next day to see if the smell improved, and within 10 minutes or so the headache was back from the chemical smell. The hotel insisted the room was fine, and several staff check it and it was \"fine.\" I'm sure our stay here would have been pleasant but this was the reality. We ended up booking with a different hotel for the rest of our stay in Barcelona.

Room was not perfect but reasonable based on the price. There was too much noise from the street despite the windows was closed all time and curtains too. Also neighbor rooms didn't respect too be quite after 11 even 12 am.
Location was good with lots of high rate restaurants and bars.

We stayed at Martinval for three nights( September 25,26,27), and overall it was just okay. The check-in staff was very nice and helpful. The building looks nice from the outside, but the inside could use some freshening up. The room had AC, internet, and a TV, but the TV wasn’t working. The beds were not very comfortable, with cheap-looking blankets, and one of the sheets had a brown mark. We didn’t bother mentioning it to the staff. For the price we paid, it didn’t feel worth it. On the positive side, the location and the neighbourhood were very nice.

We booked a 2 week Europe trip and you honestly never know what you’re getting. If you’re contemplating booking this place, do it. We loved our stay. It was so unbelievably hot out and the room was COLD, it was amazing. It was located in such a great location that we could come back for showers whenever we wanted. I truly recommend this place. We arrived late and we checked in at the sister hostal. This is nicer than most hotels. We loved the building it was in too. The cleaners and other guests were very friendly. We are Canadian and would’ve loved if other hotels on our trip were as located as central and were as clean as this one.

The hotel is in a convenient location, and the staff were very helpful. The sheets and overall room cleanliness were excellent. However, the bathroom could use renovation—there were visible cracks and some dirt on the walls and bathroom door. Overall, it's a good place to stay for the price.

The staff was really helpful. The room was cheap. The 24 hour desk was 2 blocks away on different street. The bed was mattress on frame, no box springs. Furniture was simple wooden plywood or thin wood. The cancelable up to was a fraud. 24 hours after booked got a notice that credit card charged 1/3 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit. Then got notice that balance had to be paid in cash, no credit card. Would I stay again? No. Only staff made up for other short comings, poor quality.

The service was outstanding! The service and the location make this hotel a great value. The property is older and doesn’t offer much other than the room (there was a small area where you can make your own nespresso, fill your water bottle, and use the microwave or a small fridge). Manual was the nicest and most charming host who went out of his way daily to help us. Often people really make the stay, and this was true at Martinval.

This hotel does not have air conditioning in each room. It was 27 degrees in our room and we had no choice to stay at another hotel. They claim that they are not allowed to provide air conditioning colder than 27 degrees because of a Spanish law. However, the law only applies to public spaces and does not cover hotelrooms. Indeed, I was able to find another hotel in Barcelona that had air conditioning and we were able to have a temperature colder than 27 degrees. Despite using a deceiptful listing to attract bookings, they did not refund our stay.

Manuel and his staff made our visit remarkably easy and comfortable. The facility is pristine, the area is safe a 10 minute walk to all of the busiest sites, while nestled away in a more seemingly residential area. This was my second time at the Hostal, the first with friends and this stay was for our honeymoon. I highly recommend.

So overpriced!

This place is soooo overpriced for what they offer, that it felt almost like a scam. For 147 Euros, it felt like staying in a youth hostel. We asked for a double bed and they had 4 small single beds scattered around the bedroom., The terrace was not a terrace but an exit to an indoor patio. Wifi did not work, there was no-one to complain as the front desk closed at 3pm (yes, 3pm!). The toilet was loose, we could listen to our next door neighbors as if they were in our room.

It has a great location, but one of the staff was so rude, he know our door after we get back from having a nice time, and this being a hostal you never expect to be people winning about sound of people talking not even laud just talking in our room he came to make us quit. So after he left get walk to his office and he lay to us saying that there’s a curfew, and that we can’t talk after 10pm because the walls are very thin, he started to scream to us and told us that he paid little money and we need to fallow his rule and that hi is the owner, he is not. Overalls the room was nice, we got the private room with bathroom so that was cool, for a hostel. But sincerely I will never stay there again.

Unreliable elevator.

I was put on the 6th floor of the building without a reliable elevator. The elevator is manual and requires each person that uses it to shut all 3 doors perfectly.... the staff and other hotel guests failed to do so almost every time. I had to walk 6 stories each time (including with my luggage). The manual elevator doors themselves were off the hinges in places. Worst hotel I have ever stayed in.

Customer service was excellent. Room was in good condition, Only found 1 empty bottle and a sock under the bed. The window was hard to shut and it was a bit noisy. Walls seem very thin.
Overall it was a good experience.
PS: the lift should be in a museum!

As a mum travelling to Barcelona with 2 x13 yr old daughters this was a great 2 star place to stay. On the 1st floor we had a triple room with a small balcony overlooking the street. Good transport links all within10 minx walk and some good coffe shops for breakfast and bars for evening meals. A very small reception are has a hot and cold water machine freely available. The rooms were basic but were kept very clean by housekeeping and towels regularly changed. Basic and functional but also very good value for money.
Only negative is that as balcony overlooks the street it was noisy in the morning from 7am.

Great Location, Old Classic Hotel with updated basic room and great service. The only negative is the street noise, the trash and recycle bins are out front, when the local restaurants fill the bins with the empty glass bottles after they close, then the bins are empty in the morning. This is not welcomed by light sleepers.

The front desk attendants were very helpful. We weren't able to have an early check-in but were able to store our bags in a locked closet near the front desk.

The apartment we stayed in did have an air-conditioning unit in the living room area but not in the bedrooms. We had plenty of space and the unit had loads of character details.

As probably mentioned in other reviews the hostel is located in a fantastic location and the elevator small but memorable.

Excellent location between the Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera. Loved the balcony. However, we had trouble sleeping because of thin walls and an uncomfortable bed. Note that the temperature is controlled by the hotel, there are no temperature controls in the room.

Budget en suite room was clean and the bed was comfortable and although basic it provided all we needed for a two day stay. Staff were very friendly and helpful and this is a great location from which to visit the many must see places in Barcelona. Occasional noise from the plumbing but as we had an internal room with windows onto a light well traffic noise was not a problem and we slept well. Great value, recommended!

This little Hostel was adequate for an inexpensive way to stay in Barcelona. That said, it is a bare bones place, ancient tiny elevator,,air conditioning was controlled by front desk, and our room was always too warm. Bathroom was in poor shape, toilet paper holder hanging, faucet was detached and kind of floating in its hole. No counter space or shelf or even a hook to work with. The room was noisy from the street traffic and thin walls. A basic place to sleep and store your things.

Lovely for a short stay

Staff were very friendly and the room was great, especially the comfy bed. The only problem was that our room was too hot. Either the air-conditioning doesn't work very well or it was broken in our room.
The location of the hotel is very handy for sightseeing, and there are lots of bakeries and supermarkets nearby.

Stayed in a triple room which had just enough space for a double bed and single bed. Clean room but possibly too clean - the smell of bleach permeated the entire small unit. Lift was very old, only fit two people and luggage. Convenient location for visiting tourist attractions and not too far from the metro/bus. Neighbourhood was relatively quiet but this also meant that there weren't many restaurants, cafes etc nearby.

When I arrived I was informed that they placed me in a room with a private bathroom (I had originally booked shared) so I was very happy. The gentleman working reception was great and very helpful. Room was clean and spacious. Location is perfect, central to all the main attractions. It was relatively quite. Overall, very pleased.

Room comfort was not the best as our room was right next to reception desk and we heard all the noises from check ins and check outs and the rolling of luggage at all hours. Never again

Horrible. We had a shared balcony with another guest with only a small latch to keep them out. We had just checked in hours before and came back to our room with everything moved around and the door unhitched partially. Notified staff we were not confortable and wanted a different room when offered. They said staff was in our room fixing something. Next morning when we went to switch rooms hotel had no water and the new staff was refusing to change room promised or refund, very rude to us. Ended up in the street in our pijamas while we waited for a room to stay in, when we came back she was rude again. 20 minutes later after arguing had a new room sill without water. Staff said it was the cities fault but when we left again the broken pipe was in the building and staff was working on it downstairs. It did not help when we were talking to the desk she would speak castilian instead of spanish/english over the phone to other staff. Horrible treatment and no sympathy from the staff, so rude.
