Throughout the night, I was kept awake by the noise from the pub outside. It is clear that the walls and windows of the hotel provide zero sound insulation; it felt as though the music and screaming were happening directly inside my room. When I initially called the reception, I was assured that the noise would stop. When it didnt I went downstairs to speak to the staff.The response from the staff who called himself Abdul, was disgraceful. To be met with such utter disrespect and a total refusal to help when I was clearly distressed is shocking for a so called 4-star establishment. I am not even sure how the hotel in this condition can be a 4 star!! The condition of the room I was given is shambles. While the hotel is marketed on its \"character,\" the room I stayed in was a total ruin that has clearly not been updated in years. The shower did not even work and had been patched together with tape. Charging £100 for a room in this state is a total scam.

Because of the noise and the dismissive attitude of your staff, I did not sleep at all.

Greeting by reception staff was good but they had an issue with my hotels.com booking which was fully paid for. Obviously this was not my issue but between the hotel and the provider. The evening receptionist was nothing short of rude, short with me because I wasn’t sure if my room number (I would usually take my room key out with me but this was not allowed “in case of a fire” and then asked me to book my breakfast

A fabulous old building with charming interior. Very comfortable rooms and dining room. Clean room and bathroom; certainly adequate for a short stay staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The breakfast is a feas.. Be aware that the parking is not onsite as listed. Strongly advise phoning the hotel for info and directions.

Excellent service as per normal, we stayed for 3 nights and ate in the restaurant every night, food was excellent. All the staff are so friendly nothing too much trouble. Well stocked bar drinks not overpriced like some hotels. The only downside was my wife who has walking difficulties found the shower tray a little bit slippy.

I booked a room to celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary. I booked a restaurant in Shrewsbury too. When we checked in, the room was very cold, the radiator was lukewarm, and one of the towel rails in the bathroom wasn't working. We were hoping to shower and change before going out. I went to the reception and was told we could be upgraded and to pack our bag. When I returned, they gave us the key to a much poorer room with a dingy bathroom (with a shower over the bath) and condensation running down a window high on the bedroom wall. Apparently, the radiator in the upgraded room had leaked. By this time, it was too late for us to shower, as we needed to leave for our booked table at the restaurant. We were moved again on returning to the hotel. Evening and planned celebration ruined. I did complain, but have received no reply.

Hotel is a little tired in places but it adds to it’s character but some small repairs would make a difference ( just general maintenance) Rooms vary greatly depending on what part of the hotel you stay in. Staff are usually very friendly and helpful ( our checkin lady was lovely as was the waitress at breakfast) Breakfast is always great quality . Room is clean but can be a bit tired again depending on what part of the hotel. I love this hotel for its character charm and location so would happily stay again

Hotel is very historic and could be stunning but needs a lot of investment. It’s very tired and seems to be stuck in a time warp, but having said that everywhere was very clean. The room was a good size with a bathroom off of a lobby area. But although we didn’t check in until 5pm (2 hours after the earliest time of 3pm), the radiators hadn’t been turned on and so the room and bathroom in particular were very cold.
The bed was very soft and the pillows very lumpy, way past their best!
There was no hot water in the morning which was disappointing as the bath looked very inviting!
The breakfast that was included was served in the panelled dining room and was very nice.
We mentioned our issues the next morning on checking out but the lady on reception said she didn’t usually work there so could only pass on our message.
So all in all, we were disappointed by the hotel which is a shame as the position in Shrewsbury is excellent and it could be an amazing place to stay.

Catfishing by a hotel is a new one on me! The room was extremely dated with the bed moving across the room as soon as I sat down. Wheels not locked and no way to stop it. TV I hadn’t seen since the 90s! Service was strange I felt like I was a scolded child when I left with my room key… pretty sure I can look after my room key I’ve managed to look after my car and house keys for many years without an issue. Breakfast very very old school. Solid poached eggs, cold toast, awful watery coffee. Unfriendly staff with an undertone of strict parenting isn’t what I want when I’m paying for a hotel. Very expensive and would recommend other hotels or air bnbs.

This is a nice Hotel ,in a great spot and we stayed in a smallish room 304 with a great balcony . The desk staff and bar staff were fine .However the hotel has a number of small faults that could easily be put right .1 Show head is blocked, Bathroom sink tap plumbed wrong way round , TV is on wall to side of bed so difficult to see when there is space on the wall directly in front of bed Had to wait 10 ~ 15 minutes before anyone asked what we would like to drink with breakfast . Wife has scrambled eggs on toast and could not eat scrambled eggs to watery , my breakfast was fine . All of these point are easy fixed and I would recommend you stay there .

What didn't go well? Staff.
So basically, this hotel doesn't condone taking a second person to your room if you've booked single occupancy. Really?!

They actually clocked me coming back with my partner and phoned the room 20mins later to say she had to leave(!!). When asked to give me the price for her to stay, they took a whole minute to work it out. As if the phone call was not about a solution other than kicking her out - the extra charge was £65 on top of the original £95. My partner wasn't staying, and this was explained, but I was told she had to leave the premises immediately. We left. No refund offered, sad. Bye bye Prince Rupert.

The room was cold and neglected, the carpet was old and lifted between the bathroom and room.
The windows had mould.
The kettle was old and rusty.
The bed was uncomfortable.
The bath wasn’t clean around the plug hole and didn’t hold water when a bath was run.
There was mould around the seals of the bath and the silicon was lifted. The windows had mould on the seals at the bottom.
The bathroom was very cold.

The hotel is located in the middle of old Shrewsbury so is ideal for wandering around the town. However we arrived by car and the hotel car park is a short walk away. It is necessary to drop your bags off first and then park the car and walk back. Access to the front of the hotel is via narrow cobbled streets which can be confusing.

This is the fourth time at the Prince Rupert and it doesn't disappoint. A proper traditional hotel with lovely staff and offering a glass of sherry on arrival. Very good traditional breakfast, but a variety of healthy options available too.

Parking can be a bit of a challenge, with an off-site parking area that can be completely full when you get there, so you need to find an alternative yourself.

Other than that, the Prince Rupert is situated in the central area of Shrewsbury with all of the picturesque areas well within walking distance, and plenty of good restaurants to visit too. We will return.

This was our 4th visit at this hotel- chosen originally for being close to all amenities and being an older
& “ quirkier “ property- this time was our wedding anniversary and believe me they pulled out all the stops

We were allocated The King James Suite ( complete with 4 poster) and there were a huge bouquet of flowers, box of chocolates and a card waiting within A truly lovely gesture

The room itself appears original but the bathroom was brand new - super walk in shower with two shower heads and a really nice corner bath Outstanding 👍

Breakfast is a combination of buffet style and service A nice touch was the haddock and poached egg. The full English had some really tasty bacon and a proper pork sausage. Excellent

I was greeted by Isabel, who was very friendly, knowledgeable of the hotel and area, could not do enough to help.
The hotel is in a great area of Shrewsbury, plenty of shops, restaurants close by.
The room was clean, with the necessary amenities.
The walls are not soundproof as I could hear people in the next room, not loudly though.
Breakfast has almost everything you would like to eat, from cold cereals, fruit, pastries, yogurt and cooked breakfast.
The hotel has warmth, charm and character, something I appreciate. The staff are polite and helpful. I certainly would stay here again and again.

This very historical property is very old, atmospheric and querky. It's in a central position in Shrewsbury & has its own bar and restaurant. Lot's of pubs and restaurants available in Shrewsbury town centre.
We stayed a friday night & the pub next door played loud music until closing time at 11pm so be aware if you have a room at the front. The breakfast was cooked to order and contential options were also available. Parking is available (£10 p/night) though the hotel is a 5 minute walk away

This hotel is sort of country lodge chic, meets modern bathrooms. The customer service was great (even though they were sold out). A very central location so great for getting around, but obviously a bit noisy until the pubs close. I'd check the parking situation with them beforehand - I didn't and then ended up a bit away as I drove to the hotel and couldn't see it but there is a private carpark nearby.

Firstly I'll start by saying the building is really lovely and historic, good location, desk staff on entering polite and friendly, even offering a friendly free sherry, so first impresions were good, however it went downhill from there sadly. The room we had (103) the door handle needed replacing as it was wobbling around and didnt look secure, halls were very tired, paint marked, inside the room the walls cracked and marked and the windows had flowers growing through the cracks and weeds inside the room as they hardly opened so it was so stuffy. The room looks onto the street which is very very noisy, coupled with the paper thin walls and staff banging about first thing, and fire alarm going off at 5am for a few seconds, we hadly slept. Bed is small, shower head needed a scrub and wouldnt stay on an angle, the place needs an update. First day breakfast was probably the worst
I had encountered in my travels, over cooked hard bacon, dense sausage, sparse very pale watery eggs and cheap tasting ingredients. Nothing but packets for cereals and certainly nothing worth going back for the next day. However as we had trouble as the later desk clerk (lady) was stressing on the 2nd night as we hadnt prebooked our breakfast slot we were made to feel like bad children and threatened with no meal at all despite paying over £200 a night. We convinced her to book us in but she made us feel crap. Second breakfast was marginally better but they messed up the order. We wouldnt return.

Retro trip back in time

To be fair, great location, nice staff and the hotel seemed to be reasonably clean.

I do have a little feedback for the management. £180 was very steep for a room which was small and tired. It looked like our room was last properly refurnished in the 1980s, retro telephone, drawer runner broken, small TV attached to the wall which could not be set at an angle so hard to watch from the bed.

No glasses or water in the room, wood chip wallpaper on the ceiling, exposed trunking for retro-fitted electrics, toilet roll hanging off the wall. Grim lighting and no ambiance. View was of an internal courtyard with fire doors, air conditioning units and multiple rooms overlooking.

The breakfast room was also extremely tired. Dreadful stained glass windows, stippled paint effect on the walls, awful suspended ceiling tiles and chipped mock-baronial seats. On trend in the 1980s, but not 4* luxury.

The breakfast was OK but again very basic and a bit mean. The cheap mango drink with sweetener and cheapest ’brown’ bread you can buy was pretty poor. The fruit wasn’t in syrup so maybe we were spared the full 1970s experience.

None of the above I would mind if the owner recognised it was very cheap and basic and had priced accordingly. It’s the luxury 4* price tag I really object to.

If you are used to how hotels were in the 1970s (and like it that way) then you might be happy. If you are used to what £180 can normally buy you elsewhere expect to be disappointed.

A beautiful hotel with charm and original fittings. Staff were polite, friendly and extremely helpful. Our room was on the small side for a double, however this was not a problem as we just slept in there and spent all day out and about enjoying the sites and shopping. On our last night we took advantage of a meal in the resturant in the hotel. Wow just wow, the meal was out of this world!!! Definitely hats off to the chef, that has got to be the best steak i have ever tasted. We would certainly stay and eat here again on the very near future!

Clientele appeared to be more in keeping with a Residential Care Home age group and surrounding features of the Hotel were in sync with this era. If you are used to modern contemporary, clean lines and furniture, this Hotel is not for you. Nice breakfast,
