There was a big stain on the carpet in my room and the bathroom looked like it was from the 1970s. The four post bed was missing a post.
It is also not handicap accessible so my father had a hard time with the stairs.

The Bernards Inn is desperately in need of a renovation or refresh. The carpets are old and stained. The bathrooms look like they were updated in the 1970s. And I think the pillow was that old as well. Staff were friendly and courteous and the lobby was nice.

Our first room had mold surrounding the shower floor edges and would not drain leaving a few inches of dirty water. They changed our room after a few hours and the available room had stains in the wardrobe closet and dirty strips in the tub with more mold. Could not use tub shower due to the condition. Have contacted management for compensation and awaiting reply. These 2 rooms were unfit for occupancy and a health hazard. Was told they are on a list for renovation. I also have photos to show the condition. Hopefully this will be resolved. We were very disappointed…the lobby itself was quaint with a fireplace but the 2 rooms were saw were terrible.

We had a lovely stay here! The staff could not have been more accomodating and the rooms were quiet with very comfortable beds. The bathroom in the room was modern and spotless. We had a great "happy hour" dinner out on the terrace with delicious small plates and wine tasting flights. Will definitely stay here again!

This old world hotel was wonderful. The service was exceptional. So many hotels charge for a bottle of water, but this hotel graciously had one in the room, with offers for more if needed. While they don't serve breakfast, coffee/tea and muffins were available as grab and go. That worked perfectly as I was taking a train and needed something quick. If anyone wants breakfast, there is a lovely cafe less than a block from the hotel.

There was no parking when I arrived because there was some event. Parking outside hotel property was limited to three hours. Arriving in the dark and being a single woman, I did not feel safe. This is the reason I gave only four stars.

used to be stunning, and now it is just okay. The changes from an elegant Inn (we had our wedding guests stay there in 2010), to a weird decor with lots of bright red and huge statues of horses and renamed “The Red Horse” David Burkes restaurant- just doesn’t meld with the charm of the old inn. And- every time we stay, we get the top floor. This time t(no bellhop!) the person at the front desk carried o e bag and I had to carry the other. No one helped us at check out. They forgot to replace the towels. No gym or use of a local gym. It’s just gone downhill. And dirty carpets. Yuck.

Charming old inn. We really enjoyed that aspect. Loved the winding sets of stairs up to our room. (NB: no elevator.) Loved the historic vibe, from our canopy bed, to the whole inn, and the immediate surrounding town. Plenty of good restaurants and activities in the area. Bathroom fixtures and finishes were quality and beautiful. Linens and housekeeping were high quality. Front desk was helpful and pleasant.

The "Historic King Deluxe" room with roll-away bed was too cramped for three. It was tough to move around, and there was no space to sit together in the room. There weren't even three chairs in the room, just two (a desk chair and an armchair). Bathroom was very small. No tub, and hard for an average size person to use the shower without brushing up against the walls. Nowhere to hang towels to dry. Etc. Mattress was too short for the bed frame - big gap at your feet. A lot of the wood furniture was dinged. (I'm not talking genuine 100-plus-year-old antiques with the beautiful wear of time. This was newer, more solid, though traditional-style furniture.)

So it’s an inn. No ice machine, no elevator and parking off site that’s often full. If you are ok with quaint and often inconvenient, it’s a cute place with good restaurant. If you don’t want hassle it’s not for you. Arrived afree long drive and had no parking anywhere. Had to carry luggage two blocks and carry up to third floor. Carpet near bottom of stairs filthy. Carpet in room old and stretched. Had full sized old mattress that was way too small. We kept rolling into the middle so didn’t sleep well. Staff was very nice and restaurant on first floor very good. This is a place to stay for a getaway not when you need sleep/ease/support. A lot of food options walkable.

I loved everything about our stay at Bernard’s Inn. The room and bath were very clean! The bed slept great! The hotel common areas were very well kept and you always saw someone mopping or cleaning windows. We arrived late in the evening and the hotel desk clerk even carried our bags up to our room while my husband parked the car. That was very kind of him. The location is fantastic and convenient to walking to everything. We will definitely be back!

While it is charming I cannot say I would recommend it. My room was across from the train tracks (think My Cousin Vinny with the 2am train blowing by). Restaurant was below my room and people were loud which is fine, but the noise traveled and it felt like the windows weren’t closed shut because of how clear the sound carried. Remote control was sticky. Carpet had stains and the smell that greeted me when I entered my room was stale and musty. Bathroom was clean as was the bed and the linens. Staff were friendly.

I give them 4.5 stars. Old English hunt country charm with four poster bed and chintz curtains. My one negative is that there is no elevator for luggage. But, the hotel helped us get some of the luggage up to the room. The bar has been updated with an upscale menu and it had a lot of young people and full of energy. The hotel is right in the middle of the very quaint town of bernardsville. Overall, we had a lovely visit.

Entering this inn is like stepping into the past. It is a truly beautiful place. Warning - there is no elevator. But the young man who checked me in was more than happy to carry my luggage up to the next floor.
The real highlight of the hotel is the restaurant - the food is fabulous and the service it top notch. One of the best meals I've had in the last ten years!

The young man who answered the phone -- Nick -- was fabulous! My GPS brought me to a residence, and it was very late and very dark. He patiently and professionally talked me through every mile...until I reached the Inn. Moreover, he was waiting for me outside to ensure my safe arrival. The hotel was built in 1907 and has the feel of an old guest house similar to what you find in parts of Europe. It has a very nice, certainly upscale feel in the bar area, the restaurant, and the rooms in the hotel. I have stayed there before and enjoyed the visit. Super nice hotel! Old school luxury in a non-pretentious vibe. Truly one of the nicest hotels I've stayed at in years. Its better than the Sheratons I usually stay at when traveling for work. My room was incredible! I felt like I was staying in the guest quarters of a wealthy relative. If anyone is in this area don't hesitate, book a room. Great restaurants within walking distance, train station directly across the street, and comfort inside the Inn.

The inn itself is a beautiful, old small town hotel with a very accomodating staff and an unbelievable restaurant. My only complaint is for the hotel vampires who need a dark room to sleep in. The windows use wood blinds so bring your eye shades of you are one of us.

It was a very nice two night stay for a couple, rooms are old as you might suspect, built in 1907 with just 20 rooms. The hotel has an old world feel, very nice restaurant and bar with very good service for the most part. Yes, I would consider staying there again.

We traveled to the area and thought we'd try the Inn. Quite a bit more expensive than the other hotels in the area, but we wanted to eat there and try something different. The room was ok, everything was very dated. The TV was hard to operate, the carpet floor was a bit dirty, but the kicker was the bed mattress. It was so old and used, it basically curved up on each side and had a huge dip in the middle. My wife being 6 months pregnant wasn't happy. So the concierge did move us to the next room over where the mattress was a bit better but still uncomfortable and old. We know this is more of a boutique, antique style hotel, but for $325 per night you'd think they could update the basic comforts like a bed and still keep the charm. Needless to say we stayed the following night down the road for half the price and it was great. I would recommend the restaurant but not to stay there.

There is a welcoming, unaffected quality of American service that most people don't get to experience unless they belong to a private club or stay at hotels that cost about the same. Only spent a night there because neighbouring hotels were full, but the Bernard Inn made what I had anticipated to be a boring business trip to NJ a pleasantly memorable experience. If you need to be refreshed an "on" for a meeting in the area, you would be at a disadvantage if you did not stay here.

The Bernards Inn was amazing. From the time I checked in to the time I checked out, the staff was so accommodating and friendly. They greeted me by name with every encounter. The staff goes above and beyond. The rooms are beautiful, elegant and clean. The food is delicioulsy prepared. I ate at the hotel for every meal and each meal was better than the next.
I can not speak more highly of this hotel. I travel for a living and this is by far one of the best hotels I have had the pleasure of staying at.

Love this hotel. Have stayed here before. Food and staff are wonderful. Rooms are beautiful. Only issue we had was there was no cable TV and no internet access in our room so we just went out!

Our stay was absolutely delightful! The hotel and restaurant staff were extremely helpful, professional, and friendly. The restaurant in the hotel is absolutely one of the best in any hotel. The only negative was that all rooms are on the second and third floor and there is no elevator, which is difficult if you have a disability.

Went for an overnight to be ready for a nearby horse show. Found the hotel and the hotel staff 100% enjoyable right down to the little details and I am picky. Yes, paid up a little, but I wanted no issues as can be found at less expensive hotels. Definitely recommend.
