Room was clean. However, the washroom had a very unpleasant smell, coming from pipes or something, which makes the room smell. It helped to close the washroom doors, but I had to put up with the terrible smell each time I went to the toilet.

Very old building with renovated rooms. Lots of stairs. Plumbing is a problem with property. No coffee in room and no breakfast options. Dealt with 3 different front desk staff. One was very nervous (maybe brand new). Check in took 30 minutes (4 rooms). The other 2 agents were extremely good and helpful. I don’t think they have a maintenance staff which led to us having to change rooms. Location excellent for restaurants and shopping but it is in a very narrow alley. Street noise a problem late at night.

The young lady running registration was slow and apparently not very experienced. She could not get the credit card system to work. The stairs going up to the rooms were poorly lit and in bad need of paint/renovation. Older building therefore older rooms that may have experienced some renovation but strangely laid out and not guest friendly as in no counter space for toothbrush, cosmetics, etc. There was a very wet, shower mat laying on the bottom of our shower stall. The only thing that worked well was the very expensive transportation to the airport the morning we left. €80 for two people. The other positive thing I would note is that it was centrally located in the middle of Rome.

DO NOT STAY HERE! Climbing the 4 set of stairs to get to the third floor, we were met with a broken window, the smell of mold everywhere, & a metal panel box with the metal doors bent backwards. We had made a request prior to checking in to have a bottle of prosecco/wine, fruit, & flowers. When we entered the room, we were met with a bouquet of roses that were on the brink of wilting & sitting in yellow water. There was a bowl of fruit & after seeing the flowers, I wouldn't eat them. We also received packaged chocolate & a bottle of white wine. We decided that for the amount we paid for our stay & the other options in the area for a few euros more, we decided to meet with the manager & let them know that we would not be staying here due to the conditions & that we understand them charging us for the first night but would like a refund for the other three days. The manager called her supervisor to discuss what they could do, & the response was \"there is no mold, the smell is from the AC in the room being turned on for the fruit & if we wanted to move to the first floor we could.\" We decided against it due to the mold we were getting headaches from & paid for our special request & left. When we requested a refund for the other nights, they declined saying that we did not give them a chance to fix the issue & that my husband slammed the door when we left, which was not true as I was standing outside the door & never once saw or heard a door slam. Do not waste your money here.

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. I was able to walk to most places saving me time and money. The room I stayed and did not have windows so my body was kind of off, but I had a good rest. The room and restroom were clean, and the staff was extra attentive. That is always appreciated. I would definitely book here again. Maybe just ask for a room with a window :-)

The hotel has a great location, very close to everything in Rome and easy to walk around. The outside of the building looks a bit old (like many places in Rome), and the hallway to the rooms could use some fresh paint and a deep clean. But the rooms are nice and clean, the staff is super friendly, and overall it was a good stay.

Property location very good. It was close by dinning places like Trastevere & Campo de Fiori. Our rooms are cleaned every day, bathroom is nice and clean too. The staff are very friendly & easy to talk to. Over all our stay was great!

Some cons are: our room was directly above the ground floor restaurant & was quite noisy at night during their opening ours. We just close the windows to avoid this.

The worst stay ever, heater doesn't work, the windows doesn't have curtains which means you will see light all night ( since theres a complex next door that has a big light all night ) and early morning sunrise, the bathroom shower gets all the water stuck which would cause you to constantly close the water so it doesn't overflow and goes to your room, on top of that there is no elevetaror, luckily for me I just booked one night

Reception staff were truly lovely and helpful.
The building itself is not in great condition. The walls in the room were so thin I could hear the couple next doors entire conversation word for word. The bed was comfy and clean. The bathroom had a sewage like smell and the sink was stuck with the plug in. By the time I knew this no one was available and I left before reception opened the next day. Over all, it’s a budget level hotel that could do with some investment in re painting and tiling through the entrance, and serious sound proofing efforts. Your truly wonderful reception staff deserve to work in a building they can be very proud of.
The communication with them was 11/10. The stay it’s self I would give 4/10. For what I paid, it was not impressive. I don’t wish to be able to hear snoring through the walls. Improve or lower prices.

While the rooms were nice the building itself was horrible. It needs major repairs to the stucco in the hallways, and had broken windows in the hallway. Also, the photos really don’t show that this is not a hotel but rather a bunch of guest rooms in a poorly maintained building. While the staff was nice, on the day we had to leave and left our luggage to go walk around, there was no one there with a key when we returned. The person who was there didn't have a key and we were stuck waiting. Thankfully, we didn’t miss our train.

The location near Campo dei Fiori was great as was check in. Be aware the apartment is on the 4th floor (3rd if you’re in Italy) with no elevator. Room was clean and tidy. No functioning kitchen, only a mini fridge. No view. Air conditioning was on the whole time but was barely sufficient. Thank goodness I brought a portable fan. The large jetted tub was non-functional as it had no faucets. On the whole, “adequate” BUT THE WIFI FAILED TO FUNCTION THE ENTIRE STAY despite the property manager’s attempts to fix. They did not offer to refund any of the cost unfortunately.

This is my second time at Domus Ester Roma - great location, right between Campo di Fiori and Trastevere. Amazing restaurant options!
This is an old building and no elevator but is a great value for your money - clean rooms, friendly staff, safe for solo travelers.

The building is an old building and from outside you could have questions. But the apartments are very spacious, clean and well kept. The only portion that needs attention I think are the bathroom walls. A bleach spraying will clean the spots that need attention. But overall clean and well maintained.

We paid about 60euros/night for this place. For this price this was an amazing deal, we didn’t have to use taxis and transit at all. So convenient and walkable to pretty much all famous places in Roma. Staff was wonderful, Alicia helped us with great recommendations and helped us with our luggage. I saw few bad reviews for no elevators on site, they have clearly stated on the booking information, so I don’t why people give bad reviews for this. This is why for the price we paid, this was an awesome deal. Staff cleaned the rooms well and were friendly with instructions, very responsive and clear directions for getting to the property. They provided us with places to visit and a map with instructions. We will stay again if we come back to Rome. Thank you staff!!

Room was clean with fresh towels but super tiny as well. My wife and I bumped into each other a lot because it was so small lol. They did a good job of cleaning it daily as well which was nice. Shower was really good but water was clogging a lot unfortunately but we aren't too picky so we didn't mind it. Location was absolutely perfect - it was easily walkable to all the main attractions in Rome! Great restaurants and shops nearby as well. Only the train station was for so we had to uber as we were headed to Amalfi. Staff was friendly and always available if we needed them - it helps that they provide their WhatsApp as well. It isn't an easy hotel to find but thankfully a local helped us find it when we arrived. They should put up some better signage! I would say their pricing is also very competitive so despite being a tiny room we felt it was worth the cost especially because Rome is generally expensive as it is when it comes to hotels. We wouldn't mind staying here again in the future!

Rooms have all been remodelled and are very nice, they need to maybe put some money into the entry way stairs as when we arrived we almost cancelled and found another hotel to stay in as we had one look and pretty much went we don’t wanna stay here. When we got the room it was much better! Just the entry way and stair well is very off putting! The rooms themself are great they had lots of room for bags etc they were clean and got cleaned each day. The location wasn’t too bad it didn’t feel to far from things it was an easy enough walk. The staff were all great at helping us organise taxi’s etc.

Check in was a breeze and all the staff are very friendly. The main entrance and staircase are a bit old and not well maintained but the actual room was beautiful. It was clean, tastefully decorated, and very modern. The shower had a bit of a leak on the side so water kept getting over the washroom floor and hot water wasn't always the hottest in the mornings. It was cleaned daily.
Breakfast was included and delivered by room service, you tell them a time in the morning you want it. Wish the table was a bit bigger, but overall it was a nice system.

Great location, but a compromise on quality

Amazing location, very central to restaurants and close proximity to key sights. The hotel was difficult to find initially (strange side-alley door) although staff were there to welcome us upon late check-in (subject to an extra fee). Our room was generally OK however the pillows were horrible to sleep on, the toilet seat was completely detached and had to be balanced, and the shower head was not secure at all. Generally, though the room was clean, it was not well maintained. Staff were somewhat disorganised when it came to check-out / remembering what we had / had not paid. Taxis to the airport were far too overpriced (€55, compared to city flat rate of €30). Area was quiet and we were able to get some good nights sleep however due to lack of maintenance of facilities, I’m not sure we would stay again.

The location of the guest house was amazing, if a little difficult to find at first. Once in the general area it took some careful reading of the emailed instructions to find the exact location - not a big deal. However, the rooms provide a great base from which to explore the city on foot, all the main sites and attractions were with 25-30 minute walk. WiFi in the rooms could be vastly improved upon, aswell as the general smaller touches - there was no mattress protector on the bed, with only a very thin sheet to separate ourselves from previous guest's bodily discharges... Throughout our 4 night stay there was an impossible to shift stench emanating from the bathroom, I suspect is may be something to do with the excessive amount of rain whihc has hit Rome in the last week. Overall I would describe this hotel as solid if unspectacular, if you plan on not spending much time in the room like us, its the perfect way to see Rome on a budget in quite a cool area.

Fantastic location in the middle of all the main sites. Even at 27 weeks pregnant, I was still able to walk to all of the attractions around Rome fairly comfortably. Furthest walk was to the Vatican at 25mins away on foot.
The hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful, checking in was hassle free.
The entrance to the hotel requires you to head up a few fights of stairs so not suitable for those who would find these difficult. The room itself was extremely clean and we had the bed made and en suite cleaned daily. Towels are changed every few days. The bed wasn’t the most comfortable and it was a little noisy on some evenings, more so when we tried to leave the window open a little as we felt the room was quite warm as heating was on but we still managed to get some decent nights sleep. There was a little fridge in our room which was great to store some drinks bought from a local mini market just around the corner from the hotel.
Our room was adjacent to the reception desk, as were most of the others as all fairly close together and so you were awoken occasionally by people checking in/out and we heard a few late check ins buzzing up from the main door to the reception desk. Despite this it didn’t effect our holiday and for the price we paid we were extremely happy with the room and service. Breakfast was brought to our room at a time set by us each morning and consisted of fruit juice, cappuccino’s, croissants, bread and spreads.
Great place for a weekend break!

Basically a couple of things really let this wee place down...
A noisy cistern that didn’t stop filling 24 hours a day- meaning disturbed sleep.

unpredictable hot water - cold showers were taken as read after day 2 of stay.

The biggest problem were the TERRIBLE mattresses. Hundreds if not thousands of people have slept in the beds - and it was obvious as the mattresses appeared to never have been changed - they were hollow in the middle. The impressions of previous visitors ever present.

That being said.... these are fixable matters. The rooms a were warm and clean and the staff were helpful and pleasant.

The guest house is on a small street which is nustled in behind via Arenula, piazza Farnese and compo dei Fiori- a really superb location for easy access to all Rome’s highlights.

Staff were lovely , the rooms were cleaned daily to a very high standard .
The room was small and didn’t have any day light as the window was looking at s buiilt up courtyard - this is typical in Rome.
The water was warm not hot and the bath (jacuzzi bath) didn’t work in terms of the hot water ... so was not usable. The smell coming out of the pipes was gross .... I think it’s because it’s in such an old building .

All in all amazing location - really we walked everywhere. I am not used to staying in such small places and not perfect in terms of facilities but I think location makes up for it and the friendliness of the staff

I picked Domus Ester based on reviews saying how great the location is. It is indeed very well located in the Campo de' Fiori neighborhood. The desk staff were also very nice and helpful (giving directions, arranging taxis, etc.).

Unfortunately, the facilities left a lot to be desired, even for a simple guest house. The worst thing was that my room smelled bad from the moment I walked in. It looked clean, and I couldn't tell what was causing the smell, but it was sour and unpleasant the whole 3 days that I was there. There was also a gross used facial wipe stuck in the waste basket that housekeeping didn't manage to remove for 3 days, suggesting they weren't paying much attention.

The room otherwise was adequate, but so tiny that there was literally no place to put luggage besides the desk built into the wall, leaving no place to eat the breakfast served in the room except sitting on the bed. Though there was a double bed, it's good thing I was staying there alone because I can't imagine where 2 people would put their stuff.

Great location, let down by the smaller things

The hotel is in a great location. It's within walking distance of the historic sites and a short hop across the bridge from the trendy Trastevere area. However, the entrance is not obvious and less than inviting.

The staff are friendly and keen to help but the hotel is let down by the oversight of the small details. While we appreciate that this isn't a 5 star hotel, simple things that should be easy to fix really let it down. The wifi, while letting us connect didn't work at all for the entire duration of the stay. The toilet seat wasn't fixed to the toilet and the shower leaked. Toiletries weren't replaced and the towels are only changed every 3 days unless you pay more.

We were a little disappointed because we felt the hotel could be so much more. Overall we enjoyed our stay, mostly because of the location. Hopefully they'll make some improvements including making the entrance more inviting.

The room we received had inhuman conditions and could not be inhabited. We were put in an overpriced, dingy, dirty room with dirty beds, no fan or airconditioning and no water. The temp in Rome that day and the following day was 100 degrees. The room was suffocating with one window that could not be opened unlike the two window rooms that are in the picture. We repeatedly pleaded for a fan and water as the air conditioner had broken down and neither was provided. The manager ran off and did not return repeated calls by the person at the front desk. She then told us that she could not do anything as the manager was not answering. She said she would call us a cab if we managed to find another hotel. By then we were parched, tired, and on the verge of a heat stroke. The reviews by some here indicate that they were in newly remodeled rooms and were lucky unlike us. I managed to find another hotel and the person at the front desk called us a cab and we left. She said we had to decide quickly as she had to leave at 11pm. We requested a credit for this inhuman condition. They charged us in full for a room that was impossible to live in without being taken to a hospital with dehydration. No apologies and no credit from either the hotel or expedia. They charged us for a full two nights and we did not even live there. I need credit on the disgusting room and conditions provided to us. Never seen anything like this in my entire life. Please don't take your kids or family here.

Hotel review

Was staying at hotel in my own as friends in different hotel. Lovely clean room and staff helpful. Location not very easy to find and could do with some lighting outside as bit nervous returning in my own. Only other thing would suggest would be tea and coffee facilities in the room. Apart from that happy with my stay at Domus Ester Roma.

This is a great location. Very central.

The hotel is unimpressive at the approach, but once you've traversed the graffiti on the front door and the crumbling internal stairs and arrive on the third floor, the reception is clean and welcoming. Our room has been recently remodeled, with a very modern bathroom and clean white walls and linens. Everything you need for showering & sleeping in (which is all we have time to do when we're on a city break). Sadly, budget hotels attract lower class guests. There was damage to several items in our room, including the bathroom sink which had been damaged by someone placing far too much pressure on it (like their entire body weight).

Poor hotel - good location - not recommended

Great location but that is pretty much where the good stuff ends - entrance is in very poor condition and extremely difficult to find. The rooms need upgrading - my shower didn't even have a door so the room flooded every time I used it! There is no laundry service or water in the rooms. For the price paid there are far better options in Rome. I would not stay here again. Not sure how it gets 8 stars on TripAdvisor as for me it is a 2 at best.

Great location, good value

The welcome was excellent and Dario was very helpful. Reception is on the 2nd floor and you just buzz and you are let in. Breakfast was brought to the room at a time we chose which made life easy. Location is perfect to get to the colloseum, trevi fountain and Vatican, all walkable in nice weather. Plenty of restaurants nearby in a little square that were nice and some shops a small well. The only real negative is that the door didn't keep the noise out early morning so you could hear people leaving early for their day, But that wouldn't put me off staying again .

Would definitely recommend for location and aesthetics but if you're looking to rest soundly this is not the place. Walls are very thin - so thin in fact that you can participate in your neighbors nightly endeavors, you can imagine what I mean by that. You can also hear anything that goes on in the lobby or hallway and upstairs. They also started doing construction at about 0800 in the morning.

If you're going on a trip that is mostly going out and staying out late perhaps this isn't an issue. I would recommend this place for certain types of trips but definitely not for a relaxing, romantic getaway.

If you do end up staying, however, and like good burgers and beer you are very close to the bar \"open baladin\" which was PHENOMENAL and Restaurant Buddy has really good dinner and \"American breakfast\" if you're looking for more than just a croissant and coffee.

Convenient, clean but not a 3 star hotel

This is more guesthouse than hotel and as long as you are aware of this prior to booking it is fine to ensure expectations are met.
Pros: excellent location - particularly for those wishing to stay near the old Jewish quarter. 20 minute walk to Vatican, 15 to Spanish Steps and Colisseum and 10 to Trevi Fountains and Piazza Navona.

Cons- the rooms are tiny. Barely space to put the suitcase in the room as the beds take up 90% of the floor space. Cramped bathroom although it is clean.
Beds aren't comfortable.
The walls are so thin that you can literally hear everything in the rooms on either side and above you.

Nice hotel close to the city center

The hotel definitely feels \"rustic\" like you would expect in Rome. Its not really a \"hotel\" - its a guest house. So, they have a small front desk area that is only open during daylight hours. Closed during the night. The staff can speak english for the most part and are very nice and helpful. Just type \"Domus Ester\" into Google Maps and you will be able to find the place without any issue. Look on Google Images to see what the front door of the place looks like. You have to climb up quite a ways to the front desk and the steps are pretty rustic looking, but once you get into your individual bedroom - everything is updated and very cozy and nice. The only con is that the rooms are not really sound proof, so everybody can hear what you are doing in your room.

Overall, it was worth it and I'm glad I stayed here.
