AVOID! Took my money to stay there after they said they would whatsapp me the security code as we were checking in early hours after a flight. Was left at 3am with a young child in the cold and rain because they didnt send me a code.

Awful, dreadful, terrible, shocking, dirty, tatty,

I didn’t stay because it was awful, dreadful, shocking, tatty, grubby. No one to meet and greet despite being told it would be manned by email. Offensive Manageress. If there was a fire the fire escape is covered with slippery, ill fitted artificial grass and plastic flowers. If it caught fire the toxic fumes from it would be terrible. I asked if there was a fire certificate for that building and was told they had but it wouldn’t save you in the event of fire. No internal stairway. I would never stay somewhere if I thought it was dangerous, I didn’t stay. All of the booking sites should make refunds a condition of business with suppliers because we have to pay upfront and if, as in this case, the description of the accommodation is so different from the actual we have been misled and tricked out of our money. I have contacted the local fire department expressing my concerns.

The room was accessed via a very narrow staircase, covered in astro turf. The hallway was dark and uninviting.
The room was in need of decorating as it looked as if it hadnt been decorated in years. Television frame broken.
The bed wasnt very comfortable.
Didnt shower as it was grimy looking.

Definately not worth the money being charged, a notice in the room states making your stay a 5 star stay. If it had a - before the five it would be more relevant.

I couldn’t check in because the 247 what’s app number was not being responded to. They may have sent details but I was unable to find them.
The phone line message was not answered.
I arrived at 8:10pm to find they couldn’t find my details. The lady in the bar who doesn’t work for the guest side couldn’t get hold of anyone. I was nearly left with no where to stay. Eventually another member of staff could give me my room number and the code for the key. The room was pretty dated, the bath was disgusting. When you turn the sink tap ok the bath tap comes in and runs continuously. One small towel which I failed to see until the next morning. Luckily I had to check out at 3am so I didn’t have to spend long there. I woke myself up by banging my elbow on the attic ceiling, luckily five minutes before I had to get up. A convenient location for the airport but it’s pretty rough all round.

I have to say I was travelling back flying in to Sarasota’s airport send a mail via Hotels.com advertising I’ll be in after midnight sent at 06:00 in the morning of my stay with no response. Myself and my wife tried reaching out to the hotel via phone calling many time with no success of anyone answering us. To then get to the hotel at 12:30 am and couldn’t get into the hotel. I had to then drive all the home 2 and a half hours later. Not impressed at all. Wouldn’t recommend at all.

The bed and bedroom was nice, however there was no hot water in the bathroom, the shower was cold and the sink no hot water. The TV didn’t work, the remote control was missing a battery, managed to turn it on but it was stuck on 1 channel! There were 2 nice big bath towels but no hand towel in the bathroom. I phoned the reception downstairs, no answer, phoned the mobile/WhatsApp number and messaged no answer and no reply to my message. Very disappointed.

We got there at about 6pm to find there was a problem and the room had no water. We were offered a cancellation option but had nowhere to go and a flight early next morning.
We were offered to shower in the house next door in morning where the manager lived but didn’t feel comfortable with this.
We were given one 500ml bottle of water for 2 of us. Upon request we were given a 5litre bottle of tap water.
They told us the cistern was full so we had one flush available so couldn’t flush the loo until next morning.
No heating except a small electric radiator that wasn’t working as the sockets were duff. We tried 3 sets of sockets until we found one that worked, the others were not secured to the wall properly.
Put the kettle on to ding we had been given just 2 tea bag between us.
We were told there would be hand sanitiser in the bathroom (there wasn’t).
We sat down to share a cuppa and watch tv to find there were no batteries in the tv remote and no working buttons to use on the set.
In the morning we boiled a kettle, poured it in the sink to have a wash but the plug didn’t fit and we just watched it all drain away in seconds.
Oh, and when we entered the building the door lock handle broke off so it was insecure all night.
- on the plus side it has free parking and is about 10 mins from the airport.
I’ve had no reply to the direct feedback I gave them, can’t say I’d rush to stay there again but maybe we were just unlucky.

Shocking Surprise…!!

We arrived at the hotel very Delayed ( by multiple public transport strikes or no show twice of scheduled train & bus..) wet, cold, tied & not in a happy place,4 hour journey from London

We just wanted to check-in,warm up,eat &go to bed.. our flight is 6.30am the next day.

We gave our name & was told they had no room for us…!!
Did you not get an email..??
Understandably we were very confused until we were explained they had no hot water or eventually came out no water.
Yes sometimes things do go wrong & out of your control.

But to arrive knowing nothing, no communication, no phone call, no we have organised alternative accommodation, we will arrange a taxi & here is a voucher to return or something we are very sorry for the inconvenience.
The owners were away..!
No manger on duty but a poor receptionist only 3 weeks into her job dealing with this situation with little or know experience on what the procedures are.!

So what are you or you going to do..I asked..? It was evident she didn’t know what to do.

So immediately went onto my app & in 2 minutes had arranged new accommodation.

Uber was ordered, a drink was offered by the receptionist , so we waited for the transport to arrive.

Over an hour half later we got into the Uber & arrived at our new hotel which was 7 minutes away. Only then to be asked for £35 & not the £10.55 as originally booked for.
Is our day going to get better..?

There was poo in the toilet, spiders/flies everywhere, the bed had crumbs and fluff in it, one walk on the floor bare foot and my feet was black. Won’t be staying again. Cute room with potential but failed.

Room not available until two hours after check in. Black mold in bathroom. Too hot, no fan provided. Choice between loud road noise and being cool with shutters and secondary double glazing open or closing them for a quiet room and sweating all the time. Everything creaks. One side of bed was broken and uncomfortable. Glad to leave.

Don't trust the photo, this isn't a pub.

If you were hoping for a stay in a quintessential English village pub, this isn't it. It is now Thai KoKo restaurant, no longer looks like the picture on the website and is in a hamlet with no amenities. Furthermore, whilst there is a limited bus service and the village of Takeley is within walking distance, the main road has many construction vehicles running down it on weekdays and the pavement is narrow & somewhat overgrown.
My biggest issue was whilst check-in was supposed to be anytime from 3pm, I didn't receive my door access code & room number until 6:15. Even operating the key press, to get my room key was farcical since the lights turned off in seconds & I had to walk back down the corridor until motion sensor reactivated.
I liked the room & bed was comfy but bathroom had areas of mildew, whilst understandable given 17 century vintage but would benefit from a damp proof coating.
I liked the wooden shutters over the windows, they blocked the light superbly and construction traffic ceased when it got dark.
The Thai restaurant was my idea of heaven. Warm, welcoming and busy. A big thank you to Dave for cooking amazing food and being such an amazing host.

Stayed in a separate self-contained building, which was comfortable and reasonably equipped. This is more of an Airbnb style accommodation - there's no reception or services, it's just a set of independent self-contained lets.

The rooms we stayed in was freezing cold with a sofa bed that Jimmy Cranky would struggle to sleep in.
The restaurant downstairs was really poor as they took from 1930 hrs until 21.15 to get the starters to us and by 21.45 we gave up and left without a main meal.
We were told there was a forty minute wait at 1930!!!

Dirty - the bed had lots of bits in it and the bathroom lots of hairs and dirt

Cold - there was snow outside and the heating wasn’t working.

Noisy - no sound insulation and right next to a main road. Also people fighting, arguing, shouting and slamming doors until 2am. Someone tried to get in my room.

It was a very uncomfortable stay, would not recommend and wish I’d paid more money for a better stay else where

Beautiful old home but lacking service

I booked a second day after checking out from this hotel due to flight cancellation but when attempting to contact hotel no one returned my call or my text me until after check in time when my call was finally answered. Dawn informed me they gave me the same room since I had just checked out and the cleaner was told to refresh my room but nothing has been refreshed. Towels were still on the floor in the bathroom and bed had not been made. The only thing that had been done was that they turned off the heat so it was freezing when we returned. I texted that nothing had been refreshed and we required new towels but never received a response nor new towels which was super disappointing. Also we attempted to use the cups for water but they were super soapy which was a little concerning.

Seriously bad beds in need of replacement

Location relative to Stansted airport is great. The room itself is reasonably decorated, however, the beds are so worn and uncomfortable they are not fit for purpose. We also ordered an extra bed for our 9 year old which wasn’t there when we arrived and we had to wait 1.5hrs for someone to turn up with a mattress for the floor which was even worse than the main beds. When my wife washed her hair at 0400 she was not amused to find that the hairdryer had a European plug on it and didn’t work when plugged into the shaver point (which was 2 pin). All in all, a very uncomfortable stay which did not warrant the benefit of the extra hr in bed we achieved by staying locally rather than driving from home.

Took 20 mins to get into self check-in. Outside stairs to entrance, took two trips with luggage. Two hands needed to open door with code. Another code to open room in dimly lit hallway. Light kept going off and hard to see code. No mention of key in box behind code. Had to get neighbour out in shorts to help me. Shower leaks over tiny bathroom with small hand wash basin. Signed Koko Thai, so passed on bus. No buses to airport on Sundays. Cost £27 for taxi. No human contact.

This stay was not what was advertised on Expedia. We booked a room in the Green Man boutique hotel and instead were directed 15 minutes away from the hotel to a random guest house on someone’s property. We took a $50 taxi to the Green Man hotel only to be told we had to take another $20 taxi to the guest house, which was in a totally different location.No wifi as advertised which sucked. We had to walk to the Stags Head pub down the road to get wifi for a few hours. The shower didn’t drain properly. The scenery in the surrounding English countryside was beautiful, but once again this was not what or where we had originally booked.

The studio family room is a trick.

Please pay attention that the Studio is not part of the Green Man Boutique Hotel. It is not decorated and presented like the rest of the feature rooms in the Green Man pub, it is not even in the same town. It is not the same property as the main listing in the hotel advert

You will be directed to travel to a village the other side of Bishop Stortford, to a sort of converted shed in the driveway of what looks like the owner's house. It is similar to staying in a static caravan.

The decking is wonky, the beds are absolutely the cheapest possible available to buy, there were no towels out, it is crammed for space to get 6 beds in which means the aren't a bedroom and sitting room like the description. The lights buzz and flicker worryingly. There are two TVs, they are mounted high on the wall and tiny, maybe 19".

There is no breakfast available, there is nothing in the village at all except an Indian restaurant.

If you want to stay for the airport and just intend to show up, sleep make tea, then leave, and comfort isn't an issue then this would be fine. Very basic.

Restaurant is not open, but an alternative is available 5mins down the road and or via an Uber several other options are close by.

I booked this room for three nights but unfortunately had to check out after one night. The bathroom doesn't have heating and gets super cold in winter. If this type of thing doesn't bother you, it's an OK place, especially for it's price. But if you value comfort, I'd recommend to spend a bit more on a different place.

Easy check in but not much sleep

Easy self check-in and clean room. Terrible night sleep due to being directly above a party in the pub. Ate dinner in the pub also-service was inexperienced and panicky. Food was poor and overpriced. A weird Italian menu in a beautiful old pub that looks like the owners have seen a few modern bars in London and liked the furniture. Will not return or recommend.

Quaint, but hardly worth it during their remodel.

Caveat out of the gate: hotel and restaurant were undergoing extensive renovations during our stay. This impacted our stay a fair bit.

First and foremost the hotel was clean and well maintained.

Checkin after hours proved challenging for us (who could not figure our lock instructions - spoiler, turn lock to LEFT vice right). That said, the restaurant options with the in house bar closed were less than convenient (1 mile hike or dare order on line). That said, the Four Ashes about .8 mile hike away saved us from hunger pangs and they were friendly.

Water pressure and hot water proved limited for an early morning trip to STN.

While our stay was one on convenience, I wouldn’t recommend this to any fellow traveler as the money you save in costs are easily evaporated in cabs to and from, eatery options, and inconvenience weighed against other options closer to STN.

Perhaps this will change once hotel restaurant is again open and there is value added to the experience as an alternative to on-airport stays.

Well you definitely turned moments into memories

This was a planned this for my partners birthday, he didnt want wanythinf big so this place is perfect for his taste and the massvie forest near by was both of our tastes, the bartender/receptionist (Claire) was amazing and polite and clean but once we got into the room i went to wash my hands and the bathroom was a mess, there was hair in the shower (i wish i meant just one peice but im not crazy i didnt count it but yeah ... No ....) i went to alert the house staff because 1.covid germs 2 germs, she was rushed off her feet and very low staffed and had no other room's but offered to clean it herself, she came up abput half an hour later ... I just stood there lookong around like well if thats not clean then how do i know this is clean, i have anxiety and this was not a train of thought i needed to be on, Claire came and cleaned it the best she could but i broke down once she left and around 10 mins later of me staying to my partner i dont feel safe the fire alarm went off, we went down stairs and there was alot of smoke and the chef and put the burning thing outside the back door (it was some form of baked good like a brownies), we went back to our rook after 10/15 mins of them trying to work put how to shut the alarm off, we went back to our now burnt smelling dirty room, side note where our bathroom window was next to the door everyone used to come up to the rooms, the blind did not fit and there was a drunk man looking at me, i said to my partner, we are leaving

IGNORE THE POOR REVIEWS - THIS PLACE IS SUPERB

Do NOT believe these poor reviews.

It seems to me that there are too many people out there with champagne tastes and cider income.

I paid 29 quid for a twin room for me and my son for a weekday night. The room (5) was cosy and clean with nice twin beds and a lovely free standing bath and two sinks. I've paid 100 quid more than that for places which are nowhere near as nice.

The pub was lovely with friendly staff and excellent food at reasonable prices.

Free WIFI and parking too.

A fantastic value for money experience which I HIGHLY recommend to you (unless of course you think that you are entitled to the Ritz for your 29 quid).

Book it. You will not regret it. Simple, clean and enjoyable.

The pub is gorgeous and the staff are particularly attentive. There was a slight mix up with my booking but they were polite and helpful all the way through my stay. The food was also very good!

The room was gorgeous, the bed frame was a little squeaky when you moved but the mattress was comfortable. I couldn’t find the tv remote so was unable to watch tv but I had my laptop anyways.
Tea and coffee was in abundance, the bedroom area was decorated nicely and was very clean.

The bathroom although clean, could do with some updated. The shower is showing signs of age but the flooring and sink/toilet seem relatively new and in great condition.

For the price I paid and for my overall experience I would definitely come back again when in the area.

The pub was a short walk from Hatfield Forest too, which is a beautiful walk if you fancy some fresh air after the yummy food from the pub!

My stay was in the twin room 5, situated in the gabled roof, on arrival the heating was off in the room and took a couple of hours to become comfortable. The matress on the single beds has seen a lot of traffic and is rather tired. The head height in this room is restricted, tall guests should note. Room size is fine for one, it could be considered cramped for two. The bathroom was clean, guests should note the room only has a bath and sinks for washing there is no shower or shower attachment. This is not a negative review, just honest, to give better information to the traveller. The staff were polite and helpful. I did not have breakfast booked.

Styled as a boutique hotel, but not really delivering on the standard expected for the "boutique" label. Room small but OK, bed not as comfy as expected, Nothing really remarkable about the place. Breakfast services was late and slow due to staff arriving late and also the eggs were over cooked both the fried (crispy bottom) and the scrambled (rubbery).

Fine, in spite of having some dreadful reviews.

New manager has arrived. Food was good pub fare and tasty. Iron staircse to rooms. Difficult if disabled. But we managed even with suitcases. A pleasant stay and near to airport for early start. Staff very helpful.

Very good room, renovated with real feel for both the period of the property and the needs of a weary traveller. Staff were very welcoming and helpful despite our late arrival. All in all excellent value for money and only a few minutes easy drive to the mid term car park at Stansted. Would recommend without hesitation.

Good place to stay close to Stansted airport. The room was excellent and comfortable. The food supplied was really tasty

The room was very narrow and had to bend down as the entrance door to the room was less then 5.5ft . We did not stay overnight as were very disappointed at first sight.but the staff were very good and polite though the tea was cold. you should request a few photos of the entrance to the room and inside the room for people to see before they book that room as £65/ is a lot considering the above.
