Left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing!

Checked in with Dinner (but not extras) & Breakfast included and told that I could use the Spa facilities until 16:00 the next day but no robes in room and not allowed to use the Spa facilities the next day unless I paid £75.

Note put under the door to pay extras at dinner but restaurant didn't pass any bill to reception to begin with albeit remembered what I had and paid.

Reception Manager would not take the lead and answer my questions although she was in ear shot sitting at her desk a few meters away and left it to her inexperienced colleagues.

Used to be a Member at Tring for years but going downhill similar to Tring...need to up their offering as The Grove in Chandlers Cross & Sopwell House in St Albans are far better.

All of the staff are super friendly and helpful around both the hotel, spa and restaurant. The spa is fairly run down, both of the steam rooms didn’t work. The changing rooms had a weird smell. The bedrooms were average, the taps in the bathrooms very unclean, covered in toothpaste.

Its tired (or at least my room was,98). The layout is odd. Atmosphere is a bit drap. Its so big i think its an impossble task making this hotel a modern luxury unless its totally revamped. Location is beautiful as is the main entrance but it peaks there.

Great service with loads to do.

There is so much to do you could easily spend a weekend without going out of the grounds. Pool is great jacuzzi and hydro pool helped after a hard day.
Breakfast is good and poached eggs are superb.
The only two things that were negative were the room was a little hot and we had a noisy weir outside however got used to the noise after time with windows open. There was a fire alarm at about 2.30am.

The hotel is nice. Stay was was okay, layout is horrible, very long walk from car park with bags to some of the rooms like mine. Got lost many times, signs aren’t clear. Lack of information about hotel in the room. Restaurant shut when I arrived could only have watermelon or cake from a coffee bar.

A premier inn would be money better spent

Arrived at 11:30pm to sit and wait 30 mins for the system to work so I could check in.
Once issued a room I’m glad I was shown it as it was a maze and was placed in the further possible room even though the place was empty.
Once in the room, I could tell it had not been stayed in for weeks, the bath had 2 dead moths and a spider in it, around the window the spiders had put up webs and the whole room had a smell about it.
Breakfast was ok, I guess to make it healthy they give you a plate the size of a side plate to keep the portions down.

It is a lovely venue and the Spa facilities are lovely BUT the hotel part is dated and old fashioned.
TV in my room was Aldi Cello tv !
Carpets and furnishings are old fashioned.
Bathroom is dated with cracked floor tiles.
I think for the money and the name of Champneys it needs some money spending on it.

Henlow is beautiful. For solo woman i felt safe.
There's plenty to do or just do nothing but sit in beautiful rooms and read.
Pool , sauna, steam rooms.

1st impression and facilities appear nice, we stayed for the spa. There were a lot of small issues that really made the stay poor. The refreshments (drinks) in the welcome lounge appeared to be fresh juice though tasted more like squash (diluted). We were given a robe and sandals on arrival and our robes had security tags on them. Only after paying for the stay were we presented with full information regarding use of the facilities. The 'Spa' is nothing more than a recreational pool (approx 1.2m deep) with a communal sauna at 60 degrees celcius - this is actually less facilities than my local swimming pool (which costs £4 to enter). The changing rooms were unclean and in the men's the steam room was cold and the handle broken on the door exposing the rusted screws. The men's changing room also contains a sauna, which was hot the first day (90 degrees C) and warm the following day (75 degrees C). The women's changing room contained only a steam room which was cold and there was stagnant water in the showers with lots of dead flies.

There are many varied workout rooms, ranging from functional fitness to classes to regular gym equipment, which we did not use though looked very good.

We stayed in a standard room, which was small and clean though not as comfortable as our home bedroom. The room was adequate.

The breakfast buffet was cold and the fruit had spoiled (was beginning to ferment).

Overall we will not be returning to any Champneys and instead will use other spas.

Probably worthwhile if you book a spa weekend, but with an overnight stay you don’t have any time to make use of facilities and if you would like to stay to use facilities after check out that’s another £35 pp. Very expensive but nice staff. Underwhelming experience

First impressions were good, front staff were very polite and helpful. I was disappointed in the facilities which given it is probably one of the most attractive things about the hotel was disappointing. I found that the temperature of the pool was particularly cold as was the small jet pool (I won't call it a hot tub as it was luke warm at best although yo be fair I am not sure if it is advertised as such). The sauna at poolside was also very cool so I moved into the sauna in the mens changing room. This was a much better temperature, but the fact it was facing directly on the showers was a little off putting (I think you can imagine why). Ordered room service as the restaurant closed at 8pm, service and food were great for this, very quick and good quality. However when attending breakfast the next morning I found the staff quite rude and was asked \"are you working here or something\" instead of a simple good morning. Buffet breakfast was average and it wasn't until I found out afterwards that I could have ordered something from the kitchen. I am not usually one to complain, but was left very disappointed overall especially with the morning staff.

Excellent Spa and Hotel. Will surely stay again

I was particularly impressed by the cleanliness of everything .. from bathroom taps to chandeliers in the stairs to everything really. It was spotlessly clean and shining..

The breakfast was also very impressive. Quite different to other hotels both in terms of the way it was presented and also in terms of the options for healthy food. It was really impressive.

Champneys is a spa not a business trip hotel. Food is good, but restricted to healthy options. No morning fry up available. Dinner is 18.30 or 18.45. No bar available. Most staff are friendly, but check out was a damp squid.

Very good generally. Worst thing was no one at desk to welcome us on arrival. Queue of people waiting to check in and out but no one around to check anyone IN. True we arrived 4.30 before 5 pm but we would expect to be directed to a lounge if rooms not ready. With great emphasis on fitness and health it was odd that door pushes had ingrained dirt on paintwork. To be fair the next day there was a friendly cleaner lady giving the brass plates a good polish. But it was the paintwork around that was black. As a man this sort of thing does not normally bother me, but even I felt I needed a tissue in hand to open doors! Don’t get these two criticisms out of proportion ... as a whole it was a happy experience in a quality place.

The resort has undergone a major refurbishment and the common areas are good. The service at breakfast was poor and there was no one to take your bags to the room. The room was shabby, the carpet stained, the bathroom worn and the bed not comfortable. When I mentioned this at check out no offer was made to me and I was told the room I was in had not yet been refurbished.

Rules rules, good for your staff not your guests

Ah it’s just sooo faded glories and bad attitudes. Shame. Breakfast not till 7.30, I had to leave at 7.15, but I was promised by three staff members (2 receptionists and 1 restaurant manager) they could makes me porridge (wow but better than nowt) but you could tell it wasn’t going to happen, and it didn’t. Very good at dishing out instructions to what you cannot do, very light on friendliness and customer care. Be advised, do not expect Champneys Petersfild style treatment. And nighttime was unbelievably noisy, doors slamming gone 1.45 am. Not very good, wouldn’t stay again if it was free, too annoying. Not very clean either.

If you are looking for a SPA day, then I guess this is the place for you.
If you looking to use just the Hotel part for a business trip, then I would suggest you look elsewhere.
I booked a Single Superior Room, and it was very worn in terms of furniture, carpet, bathroom, etc.
I've had stays at Premier Inn which are at a higher standard.
They seem to have spent all the money on the SPA.
There is NO BAR if you want a drink to un-wind, and the only wine sold is with the evening meal if you take it - Better options locally for food at a better price.
Wifi was OK, but spotty at times.
Breakfast is all about fresh fruit and healthy choices, so if you are looking for a English breakfast or something that will fill you up, then your out of luck.
Local pubs with 5 minutes walk do good range of drinks & food, which is what saved the day for this stay.
I won't be booking again, unless I can't find anything else in the area.

Took the opportunity to stay for business. Arrived late to a dimly lit car park. Night porter offered a lovely welcome and helped with my luggage. Unfortunately he could not tell me what facilities I could use, and that no one could confirm until 7am - too late for me. Breakfast isn’t served until 7:30am so once again too late for me. Comfortable room that needed a bit of attention to detail on the cleaning front; I was surprised to see mouldy tile grout in the bathroom and a dirty drinks tray. Due to the hour of arrival and departure I didn’t eat at the hotel so cannot comment on the food.

Not a hotel for a business traveller

Disappointed with this hotel. On arrival at the hotel you cannot help but be impressed, the building and its grounds look fantastic, sadly nothing else really lived up to this initial first impression. I was not staying for any king of relaxing spa treatment but merely an overnight stay whilst on business. The greeting was unfriendly, I wasn't even sure they had my booking as no one spoke once I had given my name. I was then given explicit details on how to find my room which surprised me until I left reception and then realised there are no signs for the bedrooms, Bar, Restaurant, pool etc the signs suddenly appear on a wall giving room numbers but are not clear how to follow them. I wanted to relax and went to the bar / restaurant only to find out they do not serve any alcoholic beverages, the waiter said \"this is Champney's\" as if this should explain everything to me. The room was fine but the hallways were dated and in need of repair and a lick of paint. Whilst leaving the following morning (it had been raining) the concrete / stone paving stones were like an ice rink which I only found out when I ended up on my rear end after stepping onto these.

Pretentious hotel with indifferent staff

Grand facade reveals bedrooms a very long way from the main house.
Check in staff weren't exactly friendly and it was the same story at breakfast. In fact I think anyone could have wandered in from outside and muched their way through the ' healthy' options.
We were not greeted in any way and had to search someone out to order tea. We made a point of saying hello to a waiter who seemed surprised.
Huge i provements could be made to the customer service experience.
Bedroom was pleasant and clean though.
I would rate the breakfast food as poor.

Clueless reception staff, woken up twice during the night by false fire alarms. Phoned reception to check it wasn't a false alarm no one answered on both occasions. Then had a run in with a complete jobs worth at breakfast. I won't be coming back truly awful experience.

Multiple stays (I've spent over 20 nights in Henlow over the last year). Very good for business B&B. Good price for the quality and size of room and use of facilites. Good healthy buffet breakfast. Very friendly staff + use of gym and pool.

I should mention is that for a business B&B user it would very help if breakfast started a little earlier than 07:30. It could perhaps be a cut down version of breakfast for early risers.

During one of my stays I had an issue with late night building work near the pool (which is now complete) which was resolved immediately by the Manager with great efficiency and care.

I will return if the need arises.

Wi-fi was dreadful. My purpose of stay was business and Wi-fi is crucial to where I stay and unfortunately my self and a colleague where unable to complete our work here. Sort that out and it would be somewhere I would stay again.

Eventually found the kettle after using all coffee shots.

Hotel has no bar but some really good pubs with real ale within walking distance.
Receptionist really helpful.
Tea tray in room only has designer teas, take your own Tetley, Brooke Bond or Taylors for a real cuppa! Same with sweateners, no real sinful sugar.
Cooked breakfast was suatable for working guys but it took ages even when they were not busy.
Would we stay again - Yes.

Undisclosed building works 24 hrs a day

Refurb work with hammer drills and boulster chisels 24 hours a day. Night one got absolutely no sleep at all. The night porter offered to move rooms at 0200 which i thought I'd chose to wait it out instead. Big mistake. No mention of works underway and bar out of action when booking. Day time staff unaware of night works. Compensated by paying one evening meal of which that will only benefit my company whereas I'm still recovering from no sleep

Nice looking hotel but a big disappointment

Hotel was clean with a big pool and staff were really friendly.
Unfortunately for the cost I did not find it good value.
Swimming pool male changing room had no clean towels provided as specified so had to ask another guest to contact someone for fresh towels! obviously not monitored or maintained regularly enough!
My room was not cleaned during my stay and I tried contacting reception for some clean towels, toiletries and water for the room, but Reception failed answer the phone even though i tried contacting them 4 or 5 times.
Complained to the management they were very apologetic and offered me free meal and drinks, along with house keeping sorting my room.
Meal was bland and the hotel layout is rubbish

Terrible Hotel

So disappointed by the hotel, room not clean, carpet dirty, light in mirror did not work and the headboard very discoloured. The spa also was not in full working order which we did not know about prior to staying, jacuzzi was cold, sauna cold and warming room not warm at all. Dinnner again terrible, did not have several items on the menu, no scallops, no cod, main meal missing an integral ingredient only to be told they ran out and did not even have sauvignon blanc. Additionally we had to walk up to get the waiters attention twice and our sides did not arrive until after we ate the main meal. We were told the sides would be taken off the bill but the meal was complimentary due to the issues above so this didnt exactly help. All together this is absolutely the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Such a huge disappointment especially from “Champneys” which I used to consider an institution.

Comfortable room

Check-in: we were not expected. Staff were friendly but had to study screens to find we had booked, then had to print 'registration', sort keys, etc.
All rather messy and slow - staff explained how busy it had been but it was 5.30pm or so when we checked in. Not really our problem.

The room was very comfortable and facilities good.

Breakfast was interesting and varied. As a spa hotel the emphasis was on the healthy.

Checkout was very straightforward and swift but we had woken to a letter slipped under the door to tell us about offers on day sessions at the spa but also that we needed to tell them if we were checking out after 10am, though checkout deadline was later than that.
As we were leaving before 9.30 it didn't matter but just seemed a bit odd and that we maybe should have been told at check in.

AWFUL, NEVER AGAIN

Considering the Brand, I had high expectations and I had traveled for 3 hours to get there, not only was I COMPLETELY disappointed by every aspect of my stay, it was so awful that I actually feel I wasted a night of my life there like a captured prisoner! The room was horrendous, we were put in the attic from what i can gather and the beds (doubles apparently do not exist) were like sleeping on concrete and the bedding felt like paper, I'm pretty sure there are more comfortable beds in hospitals! The breakfast choice was horrendous, the tea was disgusting and the check in / check out service was abysmal. There was a large open skip directly outside of the hotel which had rubble and rubbish pouring out of it onto the floor. Considering the frequency of hotel stays I do with my job all over the world, I can hands down categorically say that this was the WORST, you get better from a Premier Inn! I was sucked in by the Champneys Brand, NEVER AGAIN

Undergoing work I got paint on my coat as they was painting the stairs shame they only served wine no other drinks strong purfume smell too much but needed to know about all the work going on. Also poor staff st breakfast in fact terrible service gutted o we my cost no staff available to tell on checkout

Took too long to check in. Moss on tennis court. Endless corridors to navigate.
Only good thing about the hotel was the swimming pool.
Plates in the restaurant were ridiculously small.

The hotel is so outdated, paint coming off everywhere, the reception told us that spa open until 10pm so we got her for 9pm so it's less busy but then where kicked out at 9:30pm as apparently in weekends it closes then. The jakuzi was cold and can't call jakuzi, sauna room like a box and no timer inside, steam room didn't have any steam, my head was itching and hair looked horrible after using their shampoo and conditionair, in breakfast room all 5bowls that were on table were dirty, the cups dirty, I cleaned it my self before pouring in coffee as all seamed dirty with stuck stuff from previous user! The hall way stunk, we didn't eat at hotel but went to local pub, we actually when checked in where thinking to go and change hotels but it was already afternoon and it was only one night. Also they gave us room first with twin beds so we had to get someone to make it indouble bed. It was horrible horrible experience. Only the gardens outside the building where nice apart from that they should pay me to stay there and not other way around
