The room was big but there were lots of crap on every surface so I had to remove them to make room for our stuff. Balcony door was the entrance to our room, the curtain rods were annoying, in the way of entering and exiting room. If you don't close both blinds, people could see inside. If you know how to ride a scooter, pretty much you can stay anywhere. We took Grab from airport to hotel and paid hotel $200 baht to airport.

Viang Thapae Resort really is an oasis in this very busy area of Chiang Mai. The resort looks like a tropical island. The rooms are very well appointed. I loved the decor! It was also very clean. The bed was comfortable and A/C was working.
There is a small pool that's perfect to cool down on hot days. The staff is super friendly and eager to help.
Breakfast was a basic continental style with a few Thai touches. Nothing to write home about, but good and conveniently located in the lovely dining area overlooking the pond.

Note that the address will lead you to the back door, which is locked after hours. The front door is just around the corner. I would recommend management put up a sign with directions.

Overall a great stay and very much recommended for individuals, couples, and families.

Did not allow us to check in early. After flying for 20 hours, we just wanted to take a shower and lay down. The place let us leave our luggage at the hotel while we figured out how to kill time until check in. Most hotels usually allow you to check in early, for a fee so I was surprised at the hard no.

The place was really beautiful outside the room. The room was clean and had a nice place to take a bath or shower. The location was central to all the things we wanted to do. The only issue we had is back gate is where people come to often but it is locked so difficult when had luggage or trying to get a grab not knowing which entrance to go to. The staff was helpful and made sure we were taken care of. Lastly, would recommend eating off site as food was not ideal.

The property is a little run down but the room was spacious and everything was provided for us. The only thing that we didn’t get was an iron for our clothes, which was a little surprising! Breakfast was ok and nothing to write home about. Location was great and we were able to walk around the old town and see all the temples and markets etc.

My family of 3 stayed for 4 nights at the Viang Thapae resort. The property was very clean, well-maintained, and the ambiance was homey and welcoming in Thai decor and fashion. The staff was very friendly and helpful whenever we had questions or needed help with anything during our stay. Our third floor room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The A/C was also greatly appreciated throughout the night. It was a quiet and calm respite from the craziness of the night market, but conveniently close to shopping, street food vendors, and restaurants, just a short 5 minute away from everything! It was also only 5 minutes away from the GSB bank, which offered the best rates for converting our USD currency to bahts, The bathroom was clean and well-stocked, but the water was often at inconsistent temperatures, so sometimes our showers were lukewarm at best. It rained a few days, and the resort offered the free use of their umbrellas, which was a very nice touch. We used Grab to get around, but they usually stopped 100 feet to the left of the entrance, so be sure to walk out to check for their arrival. The resort offered daily breakfast and had a beautiful pool, but unfortunately we didn’t have the time to use either. We had a wonderful time and look forward to our next visit!

The property is in a very convenient location being a block off in two directions and two blocks off in a third direction from busy areas. I did not hear the slightest bit of road noise. We found the shower drain in our room was clogged when I took my first shower after checked in.
Complain made to the front desk and immediately they decided to give me an upgrade to a pool side room.
The location is very good with 1 minutes walk to look kroh road and not more than 5 mins to thapae gate.
They staffs are friendly and lovely, the breakfast wasnt with many varieties but it is good enough comparing to most of the hotel in Europe.
Please do bring along mosquito repellant.

An oasis at the end of a hot day

A short walk from the old town and an easy walk or tuk tuk drive to anywhere around town. Wonderful gardens and 2 pools that are very welcome after a days sightseeing. There is a very beautiful wat at the end of the street where you can get a massage. Places to get laundry done and money changed are nearby plus restaurants, cafes and bars. We found it an ideal place to stay.

Good location between old town and night bazzar

The hotel is located in between old town and night bazzar, about 1.5 km from each location. The environment of hotel is soothing and quiet. I had good rests at this hotel and would come back to stay at the hotel.

My experience:
Spread of morning breakfast is average with mixture of thai and international food, and the food is up to par. Staff are friendly, reception helped me to find another message palour when the chosen one is full
Be prepared for some noise when the pool is being used.

A piece of paradise

We had seen other hotels while we were there. This hotel is like a little oasis. The landscaping is awesome you feel like you aren't in the jungles while in the middle of the city. They have a restaurant and bar there which is conevenient. There mai tais are so good! The staff was super friendly and the rain shower was an awesome touch to an awesome bathroom. All and all can't recommend enough. The pool was right outside our door! Oh and you get breakfast every morning and coffee.

Our 1st Chang Mai 7 days 6 night (hotel aumbience) lodging/w breakfast (faring/thai) was amazing and would do it over again, again staying at the same lodging location. From touring Temples (Tuk tuk tour), Zoo/Aquarium (POV w/GPS) to (walking) the markets (weekday/weekend) and barzars (night/day) to great Cheeseburgs (Rock Me Burger).

Great location for a city experience!

Viang thapae was an amazing place to stay while in Chiang mai. Location is right off of central Chiang mai 10 minute walk from the thapae gate and there are plenty of tourist centers walking distance from the hotel. Staff is very friendly and helpful and you can book all tours through them! Defiantly satisfied!! Would stay here again!

Pretty spot near the old town

We arrived several hours ahead of schedule and the hotel scrambled to put us in our rooms, even though we'd only asked to drop luggage. The beds were comfortable, ac was effective, and the pools are small but gorgeous - definitely the high point for our 10-year old, though she wished they opened earlier in the morning. Breakfast was extensive.

Only thing that required getting used to were the glass doors to the rooms. They are very pretty, and they have heavy curtains so privacy is easy, but we had two nearby rooms and were back and forth frequently, so pulling the curtains got old each time a kid ran through. But leaving them open meant visibility into our untidy lives for anyone walking by or on the other side of the building. Not a dealbreaker by any means, but an oddity.

We made a good decision to stay in this hotel. It is just east from Thapae gate. Very convenient to reach the restaurants, spas and night market.
The swimming pool is just a step outside of the room (deluxe only) with balcony chairs which we enjoyed very much. The environment is nice.
The only thing is the breakfast lady is not very friendly.

We liked what we saw on the photos but for the 3 days, they had 2 different types of room available. We still preferred booking the hotel anyway. The room we stayed in the 1st day was amazing, comfortable and well maintained (felt like a newer building). Though the room we stayed the remaining 2 days seemed like a part of the old building and was considerably small. We didn't mind that but it certainly felt old - no doubt it was clean. The other thing in the smaller rooms was sliding glass door to enter the room - which meant we could hear the creepy lizards outside or people walking about by the pool. Considering all together for the smaller room alone, it didn't feel like value for money.
As far as location goes - it is located within 10 minutes walk to old town and the night market. Though the street is very quiet and may be a bit unsafe late at night. Overall was satisfied with the location.
The resort does not provide laundry or even an iron. So go prepared with ironed clothes or wait a day for the laundry shops around the resort to do it for you.

Overall pretty good stay. Note, no rooms actually have their own balcony/good pool view. Everything is shared. We had a corner room, although it was very large, it didn't have any pool view even though the description said it would. There is free WiFi but you have to re-log into it every hour or so. The bathroom isn't the cleanest (bit of mold in the corners), but it's just old. Overall, we weren't in the room much so it was fine. Excellent location. Staff isn't very friendly, and they don't know much English so they couldn't help with recommendations for restaurants or things to do. Wish they had more of a concierge.

Nice hotel, shame about the reception staff

Just outside the old city gates, and easy walking distance to the night market and the old city. 2 small pools which were quite nice. We got the room with a living room for some extra space, which was nice. Clean and comfortable room.

However, this medium size hotel was too big to be personal and too small to be professional. The staff were generally quite grumpy. Reception was very bad. They got really irate when we asked for directions/maps/print receipts. We got locked out of the safe by accident and we felt were made to feel very bad to trouble them to come up to help us. The lady/man at reception was picking her nose when I handed her my room key and she just ignored me and just carried on digging... I think the staff were a bit jaded by large tour groups. I thought it was just us, but other guests had the same experience when we chatting over breakfast.

Nice quite hotel in a good location.

This hotel is not far from the action but far enough away for it to be quite at night. The hotel is not large with only three floors and the rooms are very nice with very good beds. The AC worked very well and the rooms are clean an modern. This staff was also very good except the man that runs the fitness area. Also the pool is a little on the cold side. Next time I come to Chiang Mai I will stay at this hotel again.

The walls were thin and the hot water not always consistent but was warm enough when not actually Hot. These were both issues I would have had anyplace I went in this area.

English was great...breakfast food and atmosphere wonderful.

Laundry, temple, shopping, Thai Massage, 7-11, lady with a small grocery (water) across the street - all could be walked to or a 30-50 baht per person ride. the mountains, Tigers, elephants...palace, zoo, indigenous villiage, additional temples ..no more than 300 baht for the day per person red car. Mind you we were with Thai ppl so cost could be a little more because you may not know better.

Had the room with large balcony overlooking the pool. Was great to relax on.

Again walls are thin so when my partner had food poisoning from something in the mountains, even on the balcony with both doors closed to the outside and the bathroom, you hear everything.

Excellent!

We stayed 7 nites and were extremely pleased with the resort, service and central location. Staff speak English, friendly and very accommodating. Property is well cared for. Two infinity pools, one shaded and the second receives sun for most of the morning. The room was a good size, decorated in tasteful Thai style. The bathroom had plenty of hot water, a rainfall head, and a tub for soaking. The room was immaculately clean.

When we checked in we were given a 2nd floor pool view room. At our request, we were easily re-accommodated in a poolside room with the pool right outside our terrace!

Daily breakfast buffet featured Asian and American selections, to dine in the open-air patio overlooking a large lily pond & garden.

Wifi worked ok, and mgmt did their best to have the weak signal in the room adjusted.

We booked a few excursions with front desk staff who were helpful with their knowledge of the tours. They made the calls and confirmed reservations and pick-up time quickly and efficiently.

Outside the hotel are tuk tuk drivers and taxi guys altho we walked easily everywhere. The Sunday nite market was a 10 minute walk & the nite market about 15. Plenty of restaurants and pubs everywhere. We hired the hotel car to take us to the airport for 200B ...driver was pleasant and helpful.

We can't say enough about Viang Thapae & their staff! We would stay there again in a heartbeat!

Gorgeous hotel at a fantastic price

Overall had a fantastic stay here. The room was so reasonably priced and very clean and comfortable. The location was very central and easy to organise day trips from. The staff were friendly and checked us in and out efficiently. However our room was not ready on arrival so we had to leave and come back which worked out fine as we were hungry anyway so went for lunch.

A couple of things the hotel could improve on would be the following:

-Breakfast was not good as insects were all over the fruit, cakes and sometimes the bread every morning. There were covers but these didn't seem to be efficient enough at keeping them out

-The hotel has no elevator so would not suit a disabled or elderly guest and we also found it tough getting our luggage down at check out time.

- the wi fi service was poor and kept logging us out so we would have to input the user and password over and over again

Pay for the nicer rooms

We stayed here twice, the first time we had the more basic room in the original wing and the second time we were upgraded to the nicer rooms in the new wing. They were much much better, more spacious and with a balcony overlooking the pool. The basic level rooms are pokey and have patio style doors and are to be avoided.
