Disclosure: we have experienced quite a list of hotels and could really get particular so I'll try to just cover actual facts and details. We stayed in a 2-Bedroom unit 1bath but really no shared living room and very little shared space a long narrow thin between the two rooms. Comments on the rooms and space. The bay window seatings are nice. The miniscule side tables are not. The lowered bed is still comfortable but the thin table was not. Does not have any place to hang anything in the room even the small closet is outside the room. The whole hotel unit seem to have something against hanging hooks.

The washroom is located nicely in between the two rooms. BUT we discovered that the washrooms are literally paper thin. Not so much concern because of sound but more of light. Meaning, if you leave the light on in the washroom, both bedroom walls will be completely lighted up.
So if you are light sensitive when sleeping and somebody needs to use the washroom in the middle of the night, be warned your room will glow up every single time. Somebody goes to the washroom.
Each room have a 40inch Samsung TV

There 4 robes and a safe as well as 4 pair of slippers note we booked the 2-Bedroom for four occupants.

The washroom is well appointed and nicely layed out. Two separate sinks, separate toilet 🚽 and separate shower🚿 but still in one room no separation partitions that will allow two people to use the washroom with privacy.

Nice and close to everything

The location in nice and quiet, very close to the Thapai gate on a 5 minute walk, also the old city is very close too. Plenty on Hood food places, bars, temples & night markets nearby too. This hotel possibly has the coldest pool in Thailand due to it being permanently under a roof so always in the shade. Only downside I think is the breakfast is quite basic quality, the juice is maybe from concentrate or watered down. I would still definitely stay here again though.

Have stayed here on numerous occasions, but the last was pre-Covid. Staff are nice, food in restaurant good. Surprised to see the conditions of the room has somewhat gone downhill. The hotel is in dire need of an uplift. The room I stayed in could use a new coat of paint and some remodeling. Not sure how old the hotel is, but there is a need to upgrade and remodel. Perhaps Covid had an impact and the hotel could not afford to make necessary improvements, but hopefully they’re in a better position today.
The location is good, convenient to surrounding temples, night markets, restaurants and the Old City!

They charged me for a towel that they said I stained. I told them I didn’t. They said I should look at the towel before using it. Really.. I got out of shower unfolded it and used it to wipe myself. They charged me 900 baht (About $40 CDN)when I complained they waived 50%. Terrible. I asked for glass of ice they wanted to charge me. Pool is not outside, cold water, only 3 chairs by pool. Breakfast terrible. Horrible place

This would be my #1 choice anytime I visit Chiang Mae, the location could not be more perfect. On a quiet side street but just a few minutes walk to be in the heart of everything. You are just minutes walk to the city gate and the main road is gorgeous lit up at night and just teaming with vendors at night when they close it to vehicle traffic. If you do a tour they usually charge extra if you are not inside the old city walls but on all our tours they gave us the free hotel pickup because we were so convenient right where we were. The rooms were so peaceful, the staff just incredible, the location could not have been more perfect and there is a 7-11 handy right at the top of the block. The bedding was perfect, plenty of room, we hated to leave, will definitely be our first choice every time.

It was a great location that was quiet in a side alley! Chiang Mai is very walkable and there were good restaurants within 5/10 minutes walking. Next door is buddy tours which has a great guide/ private driver (tongchai) if you need to go to the airport, the hill villages, or other areas. Also walkable to Warorot market which has a lot of unique and vintage textiles, fabrics, baskets in the stores in that area. The hotel itself is okay for if you are just planning to sleep there! Not much to do/ amenities to relax in the hotel, and breakfast was okay but not worth it versus eating in a restaurant.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The staff was pleasant and the restaurant food was good. The location worked out great easy walking distance to everything. Or super easy to catch a grab. We left from here to a 5 star hotel in Phuket and prefer this one instead. They are doing a great job and would recommend staying here.

Extremely nice staff. They found out it was my birthday and when i returned to my room, there was an individual chocolate cake on my desk with a card. I found that very thoughtful of them and appreciated it very much. The hotel is beautiful with well-appointed , comfortable accommodation. The restaurant and breakfast options are somehow limited , but there's enough to eat, and servers were always very accommodating and polite. I would definetly stay there again eventhough i never received any of the VIP perks I should have according to my travel app.

The hotel is on a quiet street. Within 10 min walk to the Tha Phea old city and nearby night markets. We had a grand deluxe room which was big and clean. Breakfast was decent. Great value for money for a 4-star hotel in a good location.

This place is wonderful! The room was well stocked, clean and the beds were comfortable. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was ok, more convenient than anything. The pool is refreshing and clean, as well as the bar area around it very nicely kept and relaxing. And the spa- do yourself a favor and book a treatment. It was the best.
Everything was very walkable and even had the famous Roti lady stationed at the end of the alleyway (our nightly stop!) We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Overall it's a good hotel for the price. I can recommend it. Clean, very good location, nice breakfast, friendly staff and good massage services.

Negatives:

- The wifi connection was bad, it did not work from our room on fifth floor.
- The air conditioner is noisy even in the low speed.
- The shower heat wasn't easy to adjust with the handle, either too cold or too hot.

What a wonderful experience we had at De Chai Colonial Hotel. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The breakfast was quite good. They helped arrange an elephant sanctuary tour that was unforgettable. Rooms were comfortable and clean, well appointed. Would definitely recommend staying there!

Lovely hotel and Excellent, quiet location that is still easy walking distance to all the sights. Staff are super friendly and the breakfast has enough variety in case you are staying beyond a few days. The pool is in the bar area, so excellent in case you’d like to enjoy a drink during your swim. I enjoyed a massage at the hotel spa, great service and from a cost perspective also convenient. In case you want to use the gym, their sister hotel around the Corner has one. The rooms are roomy, w both bathrub and shower, and generally a good size. Overall, would stay here again.

The De Chai was the perfect place to start our honeymoon. We arrived late due to our plane being a little delayed but the driver from the hotel waited patiently and was very kind.

Check in was super fast and easy.

Every staff member was kind and helpful. We really felt welcome.

Nice place.

I was surprised by the location in a tiny road or alley mixed in with a residential neighborhood. It is a nice place but the restaurant was closed with a breakfast time on my departure morning. I was able to use Grab for food delivery. I think I would recommend the place but for me next time I will stay somewhere in a better area.

Very central. Plenty of little taxis at the end of the street but easy to walk everywhere. Breakfast is good and the people are wonderful. Very good value. We paid double this price to stay at resorts in Phuket but it's the De Chai Colonial Hotel in Chiang Mai that we will always remember with great affection.

We had booked a room with additional bed, and they wanted the name of 3rd person when making the reservation. Instead they booked a room for the 3rd person and wanted to charge us.It apparently created another booking. They were argumentative. Eventually, when we showed the reservation they relented.
Thailand is a very very friendly place. This was the only hotel of our trip that did not greet in AM or PM with a smile or salutary greeting. They did not offer friendly help.
The room was clean and nice, but smaller than appears in photo. Great location.

Home Away From Home

This was my fifth stay at this property. And again, it did not disappoint. It's a small boutique hotel in a great location: minutes away (by foot) from both the Night Market and Old City.
The rooms are clean and comfortable. Everyone (from the doormen to front desk to housekeeping and the restaurant) is friendly, professional and welcoming. They make you feel at home!

Great location just a few minutes from the Trape Gate which seems to be the main gate. We were going to stay in the old city but friends suggested that east of the gate would be best and it was. The staff are great and so helpful. The breakfast wasn’t bad but a bit limited.

Good and bad, depends what you’re looking for

Good: location. Fantastic location 2 minutes from Tha Phae gate and old city, 10 min from night markets. Very walkable.

So so: room was comfortable and mostly clean. Some holes in bedding and a lot of dust around on lights and furniture detail. Nothing unpleasant by any means but noticeable. Food here is pretty poor, but the there’s no real need to eat any meal at the hotel when there are so many great options nearby. Again, great location.

Bad: if you like a hot shower you won’t find it here. Water runs warm at best. Not uncomfortable but not hot. This is a matter of preference but if you like to come back and nap mid day it’s very loud. The entire hotel is built around a large (and pretty) atrium that opens up over a fountain and the pool. So all the sounds echo, like kids playing in the pool. Might not be a problem for everyone but definitely relevant to some.

They stole from my room a small ornament I had on my phone charger to keep the cable from breaking.
They did nothing to find it or to buy me a new one. Is not the value of the object what upsets me the most is the fact they did nothing about it

Lovely boutique hotel

The staff at the hotel were amazingly welcoming, friendly, helpful and when we were ill for a few days really went out of their way to help. We could not have asked for more. The hotel is in a beautiful small alley right next to the road that leads to the night bazaar and all the action. Everything is within a five minute walk. Great location. Our room comfortable with all you require, ours came with a resident friendly pigeon family outside the window, which was quite fun to watch. It is a lovely hotel and would certainly stay there again.

Relax in Comfort

The De Chai The Colonial hotel was a nice, clean hotel with a very friendly and welcoming staff. The first couple days in Chiang Mai, we spent in a cheaper hotel down the road because we knew we would be gone out and about most of those days. For our stay at the De Chai the next couple days, it was well worth the extra $ spent here to relax in comfort. The room was very nicely designed, decorated, extremely clean, and was comfortable for our final days in Chiang Mai. It is very close to the Night Bazaar, as well as one of the gates into the Old City. Would definitely stay here again if I ever came back to Chiang Mai.
