This room no 7 was nothing like picture shown on the website the carpet was so worn was threading all over there was mould in bathroom the rooms heating wasnt working so had a heater in room even that had broken stand no toilet roll in room only a rusty stand

Room was freezing as the heating wasn’t on they did give us a small electric heater which didn’t make any difference
No towels or tea bags
We couldn’t turn the tv over or volume down because every button on the remote we pressed just knocked the tv off
The parking was not complimentary as stated it was £13 for 24 hours on the upside it was just across the road to the hotel
The toilet was just across the hall and the view from our room was lovely

Left waiting at bar to check in for 15 minutes. Rooms are through a door behind the bar, very narrow space and stairs are steep and narrow. There was no heating on upstairs where rooms were and it was end of november and really cold. I noticed the rooms had radiators but they were not working so had to ask for a plug in heater.
Carpets threadbare and mattresses lumpy.
Table lamps torn and furniture very old. Wood around windows rotting.
The rooms showing on Hotels site must have been somewhere else, nothing like the photos.
The room was cheap but should be cheaper for the quality. I've stayed in better Hostels.

I stay in the Jolly Sailor every week for business. The owner and his staff are very hospitable. Rooms are basic but comfortable, staff very friendly and there is free parking after 6.00pm. Situated close to Southsea front where you can take a walk with the fresh sea breeze. It's my home from home.

Horrible!!!!!

on arrival at the hotel, there was no clear signage on how to enter. I rang them and the bar staff let me in the emergency exit, where the manager sat at a table.
I was taken to my first room, room 9 after walking up 3 flights of stairs. The room looked nothing like the photos, with mouldy windowsills & a shared bathroom with broken light. I spoke to the manager who allowed me another room for £10 extra per night. The next room was worse. Although it had an ensuite...the window was broken and decayed, it wouldn't shut, the carpet was full of mould, the desk was stained, the curtains were mouldy, crumbs were everywhere and the ceiling was crumbling. I didn't want to make too much of a fuss so for the night I stayed in a friend's room a 30 minute walk away. I came back this morning and decided it just wasn't okay or hygienic for a second night.I came down and asked to speak with the manager. Upon his arrival, he refused to look at my photos, refused to speak or compensate me. He just repeatedly said sorry I have to go. He said he would be back in 2 hours to have the conversation - 5 hours passed, he did not return and hid away instead.
I'd like to point out that the bar staff, particularly Ash & Nat were incredible. They were so apologetic + compassionate. From the state of the rooms, this is definitely not the first time they've had to deal with complaints, despite it not being their fault n instead the fault of a manager who who is in over his head and is struggling to run it

Stayed here before and would happily stay again. Reason for staying is, because it’s cheap to stay , in a convenient location, has what you need a bed which is clean and comfortable. Room has a nice view to wake up to .

Firstly there was no one to check us in at the appointed check in time. So had to wait around for three and half hours. Floors were uneven and carpeting was marked and damaged.
The room was just ok, however the adjacent rooms were occupied and you could here every word spoken and the volume of the tv was annoying. In the morning there was no breakfast and no one available to explain why this was the case. Will never recommend this b&b in fact will probably write a complaint to enquire about the possibility of a full refund. Never have I been treated like this in any of the B&B s I have stayed in. I rate it as the most negative experience ever in accommodation.

My booking said to check in between 2 and 9 PM. I arrived at 7 PM to find the bar closed and nobody in sight to check in with. 2 different numbers provided were unanswered, and I waited outside for around an hour until I was finally able to get in touch with the hotelier thanks to the antique dealer next door, who does answer his phone. Upon arriving, the hotelier explained that he had forgotten he had any bookings that night. He seemed very unfamiliar with the booking system in general.

The room itself was a bit grubby, with stains on the floor and holes in walls, but this was more or less what I expected for this price point. The beds, however, were awful, with loud springs that dug into your ribs as you lay there, and sheets too small for the bed. The wifi was also incredibly spotty, and the shower fluctuated between cold and burning hot regardless of its setting. The small, open laundry bin in the corner also appeared to have a vomit-soaked towel in it.

Owners didnt bother to get parking permits, so had to pay almost £14 a day to park car. Not impressed. Most expensive pint in whole of portsmouth £6.80. Way over the top considering run down state of place. Even dearer than central london. Sink had hole in it so water went straight on floor. On the one plus side, bed was comfortable.

The hotel should be condemned! We arrived to what looked like a closed down hotel. I contacted the hotel number - no answer. I then contacted the mobile number and were told someone is in the hotel and will open the door.

Booking in time was 14:00, this was 15:10, after waiting another 30 min. I rang the mobile number again. I was told someone is on their way should arrive within a couple of minutes. After yet another 10 min, I called the same mobile number. NO ANSWER! I’ve tried 6 calls, NO ANSWER! At 16:20, a very young lady came out, said she is there to book us in.

Going to the room is through the back of the bar, where you had to climb over boxes.

The room itself was dirty and mouldy with blood stain towels.

Shared bathrooms with crack and holes in shower and sink.

The local Environment office has been informed.

Cheap place to rest your head.

I paid £57 for a triple room and it was what I would expect for the price!
The woman who greeted us was cheerful and told us about local places to eat and parking was easy nearby.
Plenty of tea and coffee. Bed was comfy and the view was great.
The building is generally tired and would need a huge injection of money to bring it up to its former glory but it did us fine for an overnight stay.
If you are picky, pay double and stay elsewhere!

Maybe you couldn’t expect more for the lower than average price. Maybe it’s fair to say that you get what you pay for. And yes, I just wanted a clean room as cheap as possible to sleep that night. But I wasn’t expecting this state of wear and tear. In all fairness the sheets and towels seemed clean, and the food and music downstairs in the pub were nice. But beware if you decide to stay here, set your expectations low to avoid disappointments.

The hotel was convenient, as the function was downstairs, at the same venue. The venue has so much potential. The staff were friendly. The room was good. It wasnt the best place ive stayed, but by no means the worst either. The bed itself was comfortable. The cleanliness of the en suite wasnt the greatest, but effort had been made. Its a o frills, get what you pay for, kind of experience. A little more TLC and this would be a great place.

Room 8 was damp and cold , radiator not working , x 2 wet towels on the window seal , wind was blowing through the window , window was leaking water , massage cracks around 4 square feet in ceiling , bed sheets/bathroom towels were damp , mattress was thin and very soft ... second room give room 6 was damp too , the upright wooden door frame had a crack on the lock side & didn't lock internally as no locking catch in wooden door frame ...I handed key to booking lady saying I am leaving say both rooms wete damp and cold ... Ended up in Holiday Inn paying £117.00 ... Trying to get a refund of £48.00 , waiting for a email within 72 hours ...P.S room 6 & 8 were the only options had no choice to leave ... add photos of your stay won't allow me to send photos of these horrendous rooms

Nice room and lovely shared bathroom with a good size shower. Glad we got a cheap parking badge which we got from them that lasted 24hrs. The mattress was thin and you could feel the spring if you put enough pressure or a slight bounce onto the bed.
The pub wasn't too loud for a Friday night and the garden near the hotel is huge and nice. More noise came from other guest doors opening and closing (strangely at early hours (5-6 approx)

Carpets in the 2 different rooms we stayed in were thread bare in places. Some of the milk cartons wre out of date and off.

The staff were very friendly and the food is good.

Would we stay there again, probably not, but was a place ro sleep for just 1 night at each side of our holiday on the Isle of Wight.

Honestly, it wasn’t what we expected.
Bad points:
Not really suitable for a family with young children due to the amount of steep stairs. The parking wasn’t explained properly to us after paying for permits and we ended up with a parking ticket on our first night there. The pub itself couldn’t cater for us on the first night either as there had been no food delivery, however the rule was ‘no food in the rooms’.
We were overcharged for the permits (although refunded) and if we hadn’t realised then this is another down point.
Tv way too small for the room.
Carpets not clean or hoovered.
Dust gathered under bed.
Floor in bathroom felt like it was about to cave in.
Noise from a generator or something like all night, but not during the day.

So glad there was a shared shower room on our level, however the lock on the door didn’t work either. Threadbare carpet in the room and the tv had seen better days. We were met with an issue with the card machine connection which meant I wasnt able to pay for my stay with my card securely on a card machine. They asked if i was able to pay with cash and i wasnt able (not many people carry that cash amount with them and especially those going to a festival). I offered to pay what i had in cash and pay the rest when the card machine was up and running. The female staff member chimed in and said no that wont work for us and i said oh okay sorry i wasnt expecting an issue with the cards and they replied well its not our fault either its the festival causing the issue. Came across pretty rude and hostile to be honest, there was no manager in sight & i didnt feel comfortable giving some stranger my full card details for them to process at the later date but she insisted thats the only way they could let us stay. Bad customer service and bad attitude for an issue which was not caused by me. I relunctantly left them with my details on a small piece of paper to which i then saw this same female staff member transpose this into a ring binder folder. Felt really fraudulent and unsafe but we didnt have any other place to stay. I even offered to stay and wait until they opened the next day and pay on exit with the manager but that wasnt good. The other team member escorted us to the room. Room was dated but clean, the co worker told us all the information was on a piece of paper on wall and maybe wifi would work, normally doesnt though. Id did the job

The mattress had zero cushioning. We slept on bed springs covered by fabric. The carpet was really nasty and the whole place needs panting. Overall it needs a major re-do! Also tons of stairs. It was over 50 stair steps to our room.

Hmm, not an amazing place to stay. The window in the room only opened a fraction which on mega hot days made the room stifling. The bed was very comfortable though. Threadbare carpet with very squeaky floorboards thoughout. Mould in the bathroom with the most pitiful power shower in existence. Hundreds of stairs to reach the room with very ominous animal heads and loud fire doors that everyone banged at all hours. Separate entrance to the pub which was good. I wouldnt stay here again. To be honest, id rather pay a little extra and go to a premier inn or travel lodge. Which i will do next time.

Unless I missed it, we could have done with an email detailing what to do for check in (go to the bar and speak to a member of staff - a little bewildering when the bar is very busy!). Really impressed however with the room for the price - property is right on the common and the room was well equipped, comfy, clean. Towels were provided and our room had a private bathroom with tea and coffee making facilities. Will be back. Thank you

On arrival i was met with a very helpful guy. He over my short stay seemed to be doing so much around the place my hat went off to him.⭐. The room was in an ok condition just a bit tired, i cleaned the surfaces of the dust and had to get the milk replaced as 2months out of date, and no stirrers. Take a teaspoon! I slept well, bed was fine. My disappointment overall was the shared bathroom not being cleaned. It's just those basics that would make it value for money. I must add the other staff members in the bar were great. If its just a base you need for a couple of nights then it might suit you fine.

Cheap and comfortable.

Misleading check in time as didn't open until 5pm. Room was clean, bed comfortable for the 1 night we stayed. Had barely any toilet roll in bathroom. ( ensuite room) and ran out late in the evening but too tired to walk downstairs and round the entire building to ask for another as needed to leave early too. Sea view is a bit of a stretch statement, but is there just about! Young man at the bar was very nice and friendly but appeared to be on his own all night ( as was when we arrived and when arrived back after going out for a quick pint before bed). Shame no parking but the road doesn't charge between 6pm and 8am so only needed an hour but only takes coins. Would stay again.

Decent for the price

These are rooms above the bar. Room 2 was quite spacious, and the bed was comfy enough, but the pillows were pretty thin and didn't really give any support. If you go in summer or when it's hot, keep.ypur curtains closed to reduce the heat - the room gets extremely warm and we had to open the window a bit (not a lot cos pidgeons get in) so boiling and then meant we got the noise from downstairs.
Also got charged 1 nights cost when we arrived for some reason - no real info was given and we got this refunded once we queried it. - just watch for.this.
Near the esplanades so where it's based is very good and about 30 mins walk along the beach to the harbour and main city centre. All in all a decent room for the price but i'll go somewhere with air con or a fan if heading this way aagin in summer.

Disappointed as my husband had a accident in the hotel as the people staying next to room six decided to play with the light switch and turn off the light my husband being of severe eyesight fall over and bump his head while going to the toilet so we are not very happy

The stairs! Didnt realise that the property was so un-disabled friendly, no lift and at leastv4 flights of stairs to rooms. Jamie the bartender was very kind and lifted our suitcases up but once we were in the room we had to stay there and the inside of the room was so depressing sitting there!

The Cast Adrift Sailors.

No tea/coffee in room, cups and spoons were dirty from use. Neither shower on our floor was working - another guest told us one on the lower floor worked, the other on that floor was unusable due to a dreadful stench. I mentioned it the next day and politely suggested that they put a sign on the doors and informed new guests but nothing came of that. When booking, I had the option to say 'pay on arrival', but when I went to sort this, I was told that the card payment had gone through on the card number I had given when booking (I had intended to use a different method once I had arrived.) OK, none of this was too disasterous, but it was very disappointing. However, we had a big problem on our final morning - the keycode entrance suddenly stopped working, completely denying us access! Eventually another guest came down after sometime so I could get back in, cold and soaked. I tried phoning the contact numbers we had got from the website, one was not recognised, on the other one I could only leave an ansaphone message. This was never responded to. Pub opens at 3, so we had to pack up and go a lot earlier than planned so we could go and get some breakfast without fear of being stuck outside again. (When passing a couple of hours later, another man was at that door and failed to get entry. I spoke to him, he was an employee, he had tried to go in about an hour before and had gone home inbetween and he couldn't get in either time. I guess, like me, he couldn't get hold of anyone.)

On arrival we had a lovely member of staff carry our suitcases up 4 flights of stairs to our room. His name was Jamie and very helpful. On leaving about 9am i went and asked for a member of staff to carry the suit cases down the stairs as told be Jamie. The membee of staff was rude and saud there wasnt anyone until 11am. I said we had a hivercraft to get and couldn't wait till then and he said "I have shed loads to do before 11am". I explained that my partner is 77 years and we would have a problem and if he heard a loud bang it would be us having a accident. His reply was 'go careful then '. Whilst he was there telling us there was no one to help it would have taken him 2 minutes to carry them rather than us taking 20 minutes and being a health and safety issue!

Lively and Central place to stay

A basic accommodation of which provided us somewhere to stay with a sea view.
Ideal location close to town centre.
No onsite parking, but managed to get a 24 hours parking permit from the hotel for £3 to park in any available parking space nearby.
Bedrooms could do with some tlc with tv and kettle with brew kit provided.
Shared bathroom facilities., with fresh towels and shared shower gel provided.
Fantastic live band entertainment, which continued until midnight.
Check in was between 2pm - 9pm, with check-out by 1200 (noon).

Great place to stay and good value for money

This was a great place to stay with amazing views of the sea visible from our room. The room was quite spacious as well and was cleaned to an appropriate standard. There is a cool bar below. The location is good as it is quite close to the coast and is good to relax or walk around with stations being 30 mins by walk. Overall, great place to stay and very good value for the money!
