The Ivy Hill Hotel, Sure Hotel Collection by BW is situated on a nine acre site in the village of Margaretting near Chelmsford. Originally a Victorian country house, our contemporary accommodation has been sympathetically extended to add even more room for relaxation, and now offers 31 modern bedrooms, a newly decorated Lounge, bright and flexible conference facilities and a picturesque setting for your wedding or party!

Whatever your excuse for visiting (as if you needed one!), we'll be more than happy to host you! Nestled in the Essex countryside but just moments from the A12 between Chelmsford and Brentwood, we offer more convenience than most, especially if you're taking residence in our function rooms, which can cater for parties of any size between 2 and 200 guests.

Stayed at the Ivy Hill Hotel for a couple of nights visiting family for Christmas. An excellent hotel for a quiet break but within easy reach of London. Staff were fantastic. We had an evening meal in the restaurant and breakfast - both very nice. We were given a room upgrade and it was more spacious than our previous visit - very comfortable. Would definitely book again.

Large, very clean room, with plenty of storage space too. The bed was really comfy and big too. Great shower in the bathroom, some more surface space would have been handy in there though. The pipe system is really loud between rooms, which I'd say was the only downside.

So, this is a Best Western, and accordingly my expectations were tempered before I arrived.

On the plus side, the staff were outstanding throughout!

On the rather more sizeable minus side....
The \"suite\" as described on the booking page is nothing of the sort.
In fact I did question I was in the right room and was advised, \"yes sir, that is our suite\".
No, that is a standard room with a 4 poster bed!

Speaking of the bed.
Sorry but the idea is to have a firmish mattress and softish pillows - not the other way round!
That has to be the softest mattress I have ever slept on.

Food is what you would expect.
Not bad, but not memorable either.

Overall.
If you have the choice, pick somewhere else. I am sure there are better nearby.
If you don't have the choice, don't pick the \"suite\". You will not be happy with the premium charged for what is little more than a standard room.

Stayed here several times previously to attend an event held here. Hotel ok but overpriced for the standard. The room was not as good as previous stays - avoid Room 10, if the bathroom or wardrobe door is open when you enter the room you walk into these doors! Unbelievable that the hotel had run out of shower / bath gel for rooms as the order hadn't arrived! We were given more soap and shampoo to make up for this! The cooked breakfast was a bit too greasy (fried eggs were rubbery as been kept warm so long).

The beds and linen in our room were clean. The bathroom really needs an upgrade, as do the doors. The room was dusty.

I didn’t get the room that was in the description online that I had paid for, we had a lack of towels and pillows, in the room there was meant to also be a sofa bed which was not there. The bed was a lot smaller than the website stated. There was a door in the room that led to the room next door with only a bit of cardboard between the door and the next room. Made us feel very insecure. The food the next morning tasted extremely cheap with small portion sizes. When we arrived to check in the staff were coming across like we were an inconvenience, not welcoming and didn’t give off any nice feelings for our stay.

Not the worst and not the best. Receptionist was miserable on checking and was not friendly at all which is just what you want after a 3 hour drive. Room was old and in need of modernisation and new carpets and bathroom. Wasnt particularly clean either and ended up rewashing our cups etc but then its 3 star so cant expect too much but found it rather pricey given there were cheaper hotels around which looked nicer. I wouldnt stay here again

Shame rooms not up to standard.

Room 23 was nice but disappointed with condition of bathroom. Reception staff agree to move to us to another but on her inspection bathroom also in poor dirty condition so moved us to an executive room which was also disappointing due to loads of cobwebs on light and all around the coving which was mentioned to the staff. Bathroom again was disgusting, when lifted toilet seat two yellow stains when lifted seat hairs on bowl, the hand held shower head could not used don't think ever cleaned, paint peeling and mold on ceiling, extractor fan not cleaned in a while, mirror on bath panel splashes all along it and several other issues. Very disappointed, this was a treat for us both which was needed so didn't want to make a fuss but thought should share would not want anyone to experience. Reception staff understanding and helpful. Restaurant food and staff excellent. Breakfast and staff excellent.

Paid for an executive suite with a queen bed, the bedroom was gorgeous.. the bathroom however was more than disappointing. The shower head was COVERED in limescale, there was no toliet brush and it just looked and felt grubby and unclean. The bedroom however was nice but no adjustable heating.

Great Hotel 🏨

The 1st night was Great, doing Ironing ,and Getting Ready for a Wedding 💑 i was going to,
no Kettle apparently its in the Cupboards,
I've had a Severe Stroke, look Good, but my brain doesn't work so quickly,
The Shower was new, and it came out the Shower but also came out the Tap, i looked to make it come out of Shower, but nothing to press !!
The 2nd night, Abba night was on and it kept playing, so a bit late, and then couldn't sleep as , another people in Hotel had a Fight and it went on for a long time, so was tired, and was going to someone 100th Birthday party , so it was quite hard, as I travel alone ,
But not Hotel Fault, but have to sort out what I've Told you, The Staff are nice,
But didn't want them to do my room, but they still came in......so you will have to work that out, I'd like to get a reply, My email is

Nice, comfortable hotel, with good food and nice rooms.
Couple of minor gripes; the heating made the odd 'gurgle' in the bathroom during the night and the shower was on a shower pump - as soon as you turned it on the pump kicked into action. Not a problem for me but I'm sure my fellow guests would not have been too happy.
Also, check-in was a little strange; I had to scan a QR-code and check in online when I got to the hotel (to save paper, apparently, although my booking had been printed out and was sat in front of the receptionist). Not a problem but it would have been nice to be notified in advance - I received the standard \"You can check in online\" mail from Hotels.com, but tend to ignore these as have had bad experiences in the past

Clean but very basic, no lifts, no fridge or telephone in the rooms, no heating, bins not emptied during the day though beds made and toilets cleaned.
The room was freezing cold as it was a wet weekend in late September/early October- we were assured that the radiators were timed and would come on and given a tiny fan heater- the radiator never came on at all. Each time we needed to speak to the staff about this we had to go down to reception only to be fobbed off with a promise that it was going to come on until we gave up and managed with the fan heater which took ages, dried the room out and got too hot at 3am so we had to get up and switch it off - freezing by 6am again.
Good breakfast, great restaurant service and we had a good dinner at Bartellas, the in house restaurant. Tea making facilities in the room adequate but we had to ask for more teabags, they left us one biscuit pack(2 biscuits) to be shared between 2 on one of the days. Plenty of hot water so bath/ shower no problems, but the toiletries were a bit basic, no shower cap.

Adequate for 1 night not recommended for longer

We stayed as a family of 4 after a wedding and all stayed in 1 room. It was adequate for 1 night and there was just enough space.
The shower was barely a dribble which meant I couldn't wash my thick hair but it was fine for the kids and my husband.
The WiFi signal was weak so not able to stream video on my tablet.
We didn't use room service or have breakfast.

The hotel reception was very helpful on arrival and when i rang for room service very helpful friendly and food was very well present and tasted great.

Appearance of room was disappointing with lots of cob webs in all corners of the room and wall needs repainting in bathroom.

dirty don’t bother

Given room 11 on ground floor on getting to the room door was open very strange. Anyway been in car for nearly 7 hours all I wanted to do was order room service then bed. Whilst hunting for the room service menu I opened top drawer to find open pack of 12 condoms and pack of scented candles!! Went back to reception and asked to be moved. Next room was upstairs that had a dirty pair of socks in wardrobe and black mould of bathroom ceiling. There was banging of doors all night so didn’t get much sleep reception said of it might be the fire doors. I would not stay here again.

Food was lovely. Room not so much. Black mould on the ceiling in the bathroom. Lots of road noise from bedroom window, I thought at first that it was open slightly due to the amount of noise. Upon further investigation, noticed a significant crack around the edges. Light force on the window made this move. Awoken during the night by very noisy drainage pipes from another room.

The room wasn't very clean, large cobweb from the lamp to the ceiling had obviously been there some time, the hot tap in the bathroom was very hard to turn on and only moved about a quarter of a turn, the shower screen seal only the bath was dirty/had black mould.

It was an amazing stay from start to finish. The whole staff was absolutely amazing and very helpful. Whenever we called to request something, the staff was very quick to respond and bring us what we needed. The dinner was delicious and quite reasonably priced. I liked the extra security they provided during the night as they would lock the doors during certain hours. It's a very adorable hotel and I would definitely stay here again!
