Firstly, if you get a room that is not facing the pool beware where it faces. There is a mosque beside the hotel and they do have prayer calls 5 times a day, including 1 before bedtime and another at 6am. For those not used to it, it can be very jarring. Food is mediocre and expected for the price paid. Facilities are worn... I mean pretty old at this point. Overall we made do with what we had and my kid still enjoyed our little vacation. This place is due for a refresh but meanwhile, I wish them only the best. I would have given the hotel 3 stars, had they informed me about the possibility of being awoken at 6am.

Be aware that the rooms facing the city have no balcony. We upgraded on check-in and had a lovely balcony looking over the pools and sea. The hotel wasn’t full so there were plenty of sunbeds and breakfast was quiet even at peak hour! Plenty of food choices and the staff were friendly. There is no beach access due to erosion but the grounds are fine and pools looked lovely. Plenty of places to eat and drink just outside the hotel so make sure you explore. Grabs are plentiful and it’s only a 10 min drive to the butterfly farm and Batik cultural factory.

If you have kids, this is where it’s at! There is a kids club 10-13.00 (chargeable at 30 MYR for 2 hours) and 14.00-18.00 (free), both of which have great activities - in the morning, there is a large soft play zone with giant slides, video games etc and in the afternoon, they do activities like cooking class, golf, flying kites, etc. Plus you have all the pools, splash area and beach water sports. The staff were warm, professional and keeping with the strong Shangri-La brand ! We would come back!

The Golden Sands is getting very tired. I have stayed there before many years ago and there had been little done to the property. The grounds are lovely but the beach has suffered greatly with much of the foreshore being washed away compared to25-20 years ago. Given the cost I was hoping for more.

It is a very dated hotel with some facilities needs refurbishing.

Bathroom bathtub is not sparkly clean. There are traces of patches of white filler used to mend the cracked tub. The management should have done better job in mending the tub. Booked seaview kind room but wasnt abke to use the tub.

Kids slide area wasnt well maintained. Steps leading up to the slides has algae.

Breakfast serving was so so although selection is huge.

This is the most outdated Shangri la resort in the region. The room badly need a refurbishment. Service is lacking in sincerity compared to Singapore and Cebu. Used cups in front of room during check in. Requested for baby amenities but did not arrive. VIP benefits on dining are very restricted. Recommend to look somewhere else.

Good: Waterslides were great for little kids. Hotel was clean and orderly. The staff was friendly. Walking distance to some local food stalls. The included breakfast was good. They made airport pickup and dropoff easy with their contractor, even for my family of 7 that was traveling. Be sure to request a van with shoulder seat belts if you care. 1 had them, 1 only had lap belts.

Bad: Be sure you get what you want and request at check in. I clarified what kind of room that I needed a month before arrival. It was not complicated. King room ocean view, murphy bed, baby cot. I had to go back to the front desk 4 times before the Manager was able to help me get what was already agreed upon. My other 2 rooms were acceptable because they did not have special requests. The food for order by the pool was not very good and expensive. I guess this is expected of a resort. The food across the street was much better and significantly cheaper. The kid's club required payment and an adult to sit there. Personally, I have never seen this before at a name brand resort. It is usually included in the cost and an adult does not have to sit there. It kind of defeats the purpose of a kid's club.

Extremely disappointing experience—not up to Shangri-La standards. We had to change rooms twice, resulting in packing and unpacking three times. Each room had severe issues: significant ant infestations in the bathrooms, peeling bathtubs, mouldy grout, and an overwhelming chemical smell after maintenance sprayed rooms with guests still inside. Staff were unhelpful, defensive, and offered no genuine solutions or apologies. Definitely not worth the price or the reputation of the Shangri-La brand.

Staffs were very extremely nice and friendly. Well equipped gym, kids club open 10am-10pm, indoor adventure playground right beside at RM30 for 2 hours.
Food wise there’s room to improve. Pool is fun with attended life guard everywhere and slide is fun. However monitor lizard is present, one swam across us and a young girl got so panicked that I quickly reached out to her cuz I think she can’t swim. It’s very close to nature so abit can’t do much. Pool wise not that clean cuz people walked barefoot on the grass and floor and then they enter. I couldn’t spot their filtration system. Algae’s rocks at the side of the pool, I mean aesthetically they looked pretty and full of nature like but I’m thinking about hygiene aspect. But nonetheless if you’re ok with it then I don’t see why not and my kid survive well. They don’t particularly have a beach but there are sports activities of different booth available. Had to walk to the left side of the beach to have better beach to play sandcastle but however sand is quite coarse and warnings of jellyfish are very apparent so we avoid swimming.
The deluxe room flooring is clean, equipped with basic Iron with board, safe deposit, plenty of hangers, comfortable bed and pillows, plenty of power point to charge, plenty of lights to control to your liking, non-smoking good spacing balcony facing the pool with hanging pole to hang your wet clothes, beach non-slip slippers, bath gel, conditioner, and shampoo. Overall it’s kids friendly resort=)

Owing to the design of building you cannot escape the uncontrolled noise of children playing in the swimming pools.
Definitely would not recommend to older couples. Perfect for young families.

This is not the Golden Sands we remembered & enjoyed in 1980, but time moves on!!

There are AC charging facilities at the hotel but have no instructions how to operate it and checking online for those that had used it before states that the its pretty difficult to operate it using a non common app plus the fees is super pricey (not recommended to use)

The hotel is in a convenient position as close by there are many food options for you to choose from. Pool area was very nice and plenty of shaded seating around the pool. Breakfast was one of the best with many different food options available was truly top notch!! The only annoying thing was we did not have a verandah and faced the main street which we did not mind but were woken up every morning by the mosque at around 5-6 and the prayer was loud and went on for around an hour and we were on the top floor. So if you are a light sleeper get yourself a verandah and you'll be facing the pool and most probably not woken up early in the morning

Bathroom had what looked like water or mould stains in the upper corners and during a shower, the bathtub didn't drain fast enough compared to the water pressure which meant you were in a puddle while showering. The Pool and childrens play area was great but the beach portion was not good, alot of litter left on the sand and debris was floating in with a mix of natural and man-made sand, the fabric holding the man-made sand had not been removed which made this beach area look even worse. Good breakfast options and even a childrens corner buffet section.

First time staying at the property and the experience was dismal. For a hotel under the Shangri-La umbrella the service was very disappointing. Rooms were dusty and dated (my kids were sneezing from the dust all the time). Hotel services were bad, food orders were always wrong, always overcharging despite having membership and the staff were barely helpful. In the 4/5 days we stayed there we only came across 2 friendly and helpful staff.

Only nice thing about the hotel is the pool area and the access to the beach.

It’s a pitty as the hotel has so much potential to be one of the best but unfortunately it will not be my in my list of options for my next visit.

The room was not as advertised and was not suitable for getting restful sleep.
We were placed on the 2nd floor with a large diesel generator underneath our window. The window could not be opened but was not sealed shut properly, allowing the generator noise into the room.
Towards the evening the smell of paint thinner entered our room and became progressively worse.
On informing reception of these issues and requesting another room, we were told that the generator was to supplement the hotel's electricity supply due to it being an old building, and that management had decided to apply wood varnish to the surrounding areas and we could expect the smell to enter the rooms through the air conditioning. No solution was offered other than to check again the following morning for a room change, as no other rooms were available that evening.
Based on this we checked out and stayed at an alternative hotel.
We were not at all satisfied with the high noise level and the disregard for the health of guests inhaling varnish fumes.

The birds are pretty aggressive in picking at food if left unattended. The bird poo is also on the beach chairs and there is a risk of being “hit” by the poo if you are laying down on the beach chairs.

Amazing hotel with the friendliest staff. So beautiful, lots of things to do on the resort itself. We enjoyed massages, parasailing, and swimming. Also great if you have kids and babies, our wee one loved it. We woke up to monkeys on our balcony and that was such a fun experience. You can also enjoy the harmless monitor lizards roaming around the resort. Lastly, the food and service is incredibly cheap and great quality. Highly recommend the Sigis bar and restaurant on the property. Will definitely come back.

We really enjoyed our stay here. We upgraded to an Executive seaview room and we are glad we did. A great view of the sea and the pool. Breakfasts were good. We loved the pools and the resident lizards. An amazing place for families with young kids with the waterslides on the property. Its also a short walk to the longbeach hawker market and the BoraBora bar! Overall we loved this place. Just a note, we travelled during Ramadan and think it did affect how much was open, esp during the day.

My wife and I had an exceptional stay at the Golden Sands Resort in Penang. This resort is a paradise for water enthusiasts, offering an extensive array of swimming facilities and watersports activities, which you can even negotiate to fit your budget. The dining options available within a short 5 to 10-minute walk are incredibly diverse, catering to a wide range of palates with Indian, Malay, Thai, and Arab/Turkish cuisines.

The housekeeping staff deserves special mention for their impeccable service, ensuring our room was always clean and inviting. The breakfast buffet was a daily highlight, offering a varied selection from continental dishes to local specialties, providing a taste of Penang's rich culinary heritage.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Golden Sands Resort to anyone looking to immerse themselves in the beauty and culture of Penang. Attractions such as the Entopia Butterfly Park and Escape Theme Park are conveniently close, enhancing our experience. Moreover, the availability of Grab (the local equivalent of Uber) made exploring Penang, including the historical Georgetown, both easy and enjoyable. This stay has left a lasting impression on us, making it a holiday we will always cherish.

Although I do not have any children at the moment, it is a very child-friendly resort. I will certainly bring my children here in the future when I have some.

The soundproofing in the room is in need of improvement. We were situated in a lower floor just above an area heavy with staff movements and the noise from there was quite inconvenient. The sound of luggages and trolleys were also very audible.

Other than that, it's a very family friendly resort which kept our two year old very occupied.

The beach is beautiful..The pool is lovely…The staff are excellent….however the rooms & bathrooms were old and outdated. Also the sofa in the room was not vacuumed properly..when we lifted the cushions you could see the dirt and dust.
We were also disappointed that the breakfast was cleared by 10.30am whereas it said that it was on till 11am. On the 1st when they couldn’t cope at the garden cafe and asked us to go to Ziggys for breakfast, it was a huge disappointment regarding the variety & quantity of food over there.

Great experience staying at Golden Sands. Friendly and accomodating staff, convenient location for local shops, eateries, massages, atm and night markets. Bathrooms and rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. The hotel itself is on the older side and could do with a slight update, maybe even just a coat of paint. Would definitely recommend staying here. Huge variety at the breakfast buffet with numerous options catering to all dietary requirements. No need to leave the facility as everything was there. Pool facilities were amazing with multiple pools for different age groups with slides as well. Property backs on to the beach with amazing watersport options eg. Jetskiing, parasailing, donut boat riding, banana boat riding. Had an amazing family holiday, nice and relaxing as well as action packed.

We were hoping to spend a nice and luxurious Christmas weekend at this hotel I always heard good things about Shangri La hotels in general.
We paid en excess of US$ 700 for 2 nights and didn’t even get breakfast included.
The room was dirty and simple for the price we paid.
We were told the Christmas’s Eve dinner would include Turkey as per request yet it ended up to be a simple 4 * BBQ buffet.
As you can observe from the pictures the room was not at all cleaned well.
And the night of arrival one of the 2 elevators had dirty napkins, receipts and a used mask on the floor which I quietly pointed out to reception and the next day around noon it was still dirty.
Overall sadly enough not at all what I expected.
Sorry but I do travel a lot around the world I love being in Malaysia but disappointed
