This property is quite old, according to our Grab driver it's about 50 years old and it shows. They only have 3 lifts, one of which wasn't in service the entire time we were there. The lifts were slow and crowded. Our room had torn bedding the day we checked in, the bathroom had grime under the sink. This property way past its prime. The only thing they have going for them is its location and the people who work there, service was excellent. Everyone greeted guests with warm smiles. The breakfast buffett was very good, that alone made up for much that is wrong with this hotel.

Loved how spacious my room was. And the view of the beach was lovely. The pool was nice but sadly mostly in the shade, not receiving enough sun. The hotel was located very near a food court, so that was very handy when it came to meals. However, Hompton is situated quite a distance from Georgetown, so it's not so convenient if you have lots of things to do there.

I would rate this as a 3.5-star hotel. The beach by the hotel is quite small, so if you are booking based-on beach access and proximity, I would recommend a hotel either closer to Georgetown or a newer construction (as this hotel has been renovated but is in an older builing. Jazz hotel down the street may be a newer and better choice, but check the reviews first!). What can be improved at this hotel is housekeeping. When we checked in the sheets were severely stained with makeup (not a little bit, the inside/top of the sheets were pink). The bed was changed as requested, but this is an oversight a 4-star rated hotel should not have had. Also housekeeping was typically not done by 5pm or sometimes even by 7pm, when we were gone from the room all day. There was one day where we hit the service room button when we left after 9am and we were back around 7pm and the room hadn't been cleaned, and was skipped that day. Typical room cleaning in hotels is from 10am to 2 or 3pm, but not at this hotel, either the room wasn't cleaned or it was done after 5pm.
Lastly, this is more of an issue with the Expedia booking and not an issue with the hotel or hotel management - watch out when booking to be sure your confirmation says \"free breakfast\". When we booked on Expedia it said free breakfast in red by the room description, but I didn't notice that the confirmation didn't have this noted, as a result we didn't have free breakfast at the hotel and it was 49MYR per person per day.

The shower in my room was broken, the safe didn’t work, the refrigerator didn’t work, the lotion dispenser was empty. 33 floor building, 3 lifts, one of which was broken, and the staff use the guest lifts as well. On my third night the battery in my door gave out so I couldn’t get in my room-which meant two trips to the lobby from one of the top floors, at close to 11 pm. Once the door was fixed, for reasons I still don’t understand, a random staff person showed up and rang the door at 11:30 pm. I don’t know what language he spoke-it wasn’t Malay, Thai, Chinese, English or French. After trying all those I gave up and made him leave.
On a more positive note the bed was comfortable. But the hotel overall needs attention to the basics, maintenance is shockingly bad.

The service is amazing, everyone is welcoming and supportive. Locations is great.

Cons: mold everywhere! The whole toilet is full of mold. Hot water pressure is bad, sometimes during the days there is no hot water at all. I’m not sure if the pump doesn’t have the capacity to work for high floors, or if they switch off the pump during sleeping hours, but it’s completely bad.

The rooms needs more furniture or a better way to reduce the outside noise. You can hear everything happening in the next door rooms, in the upstairs room, and in the hall.

The hotel clearly needs some conditioning.

The room was lovely, extremely comfortable bed and pillows, regular room service with cleaning, my only frustration was nobody on the desk spoke decent English, so the communication was difficult, also you couldn’t order a coffee until 11am which I thought was ridiculous as when I was heading out earlier of a morning it would have been nice to grab a take away coffee, and also they only have full cream milk, which I can’t have, so many people require either soy, almond or skim milk.. also when I enquired at the desk about accessing Netflix and YouTube for my tv in my room, I was advised you only have access link if you have a android mobile, and I have an I phone as alot of people do, I found this rather disappointing.. the area location on the beach was absolutely beautiful..

There was a bus down the road from our hotel meaning that we could we could take the bus down to Georgetown. Nice swimming pool, beach front with scenic seating area, food court in front of hotel with other local restaurants in the vicinity, bus stops close by if you want to try the local service.

The hotel has direct beach access and the view is truly amazing. You literally cannot be closer to the beach.

However, I found the property to be very dated and in dire need of a refurbishment. The door frames are peeling, there’s a constant smell of smoke in the corridors and the soft furnishings have clearly been overused. In addition, the housekeeping is very hit and miss - we had to call on several occasions as they did not come to our room.

Another thing that might not be the hotel’s fault, but I found the pool unusable. It might be because of the clientele of the hotel (although it is not cheap), but the pool etiquette of guests is very poor and there is no staff oversight. For instance, the pool chairs were all taken up by fully dressed men on their phones and ogling at the women. People were going into the pool with a full face of make up and outside clothes. It was very disappointing for me to not be able to swim but I just felt too uncomfortable.

I think the hotel needs a refurbishment and rebrand so it can make use of its wonderful location and attract a different clientele.

The hotel, location, and the service were all good. There were some discrepancies in the room. The manager was very kind and he took care of them. The only complaint that I had was the first lady at the front desk who answered the call when I tried to tell her my room was not made completely. She instead of apologizing and solving the issue, she asked me if I requested to have my room cleaned. That was not professional and not acceptable. The beaches were useless. They were dirty and empty.

Rooms were outdated with leaks. Only 3 lifts serving 32 storeys, with 1 broken down. Had to wait over 20 minutes for lifts, if I wasnt heabily pregnant I would have just walked down the 15 flights. Everything was slow, though staff were very friendly the service was incredibly slow. The lobby is terribly small and it cannot cooe during the local holidays. Again, nothing against thr staff who were very kind and pleasant. The hotel just isn't it!

Great location/view, but service SUCKS !!

1) I don’t have local Malaysia phone number, so when I checked in early, FrontDesk has no way to contact me when my room is ready (hello, there are technologies that integrate into your CRM that can send text messages to all phone numbers!). So the FrontDesk just told me to come back at 3pm which 3 hours away.
2) I travel by myself and requested a King size bed of a premium suite. They gave me a King size bed with a bunk bed in the living room. And it seems that someone lie on the bunk bed and housekeeping didn’t do anything about it (see pic below).
3) There are 2 colors for the pillowcases. Seems odd for a suite that cost $180 a night (see pic below).
4) Requested late checkout at 4pm cuz my flight is at 8pm. They want to charge RM60 per hour for each additional hour of stay. And tomorrow is a Monday and not a regular holiday that they don’t have nearly half full of a booking. Great ways to keep customer loyalty for someone who’s willing to spend $180 a night. I guess that’ll be the last time I stay with them.

This property is quite a gem for those who are travelling with family and/or young children and need to spend time in the room. For the price, I cannot think of a better hotel I have stayed at. Our suite was very spacious with an incredible ocean view. The air conditioner took some time to get going but, we realize from staying in other hotels, it was for our good because it did not turn the room into an ice box and we were able to sleep very comfortably. The staff was outstanding and commendable for traditional Asian hospitality. They were the strongest asset of the hotel, in this writer's opinion. In addtion, the breakfast buffet was plentiful and delicious. If one wants to eat out on a whim's notice, the street food in front is clean, popular and, oh so yummy! Highly recommend the Hompton hotel for value, quality and overall excellence.

I had booked this hotel for a week (December 4-13) but to my horror, my young daughter was involved in a fatal car accident on December 7. Thus, I changed my travel plans and booked the first available flight on Singapore Airlines to California for December 9. They did so without a fee on Compassionate grounds. I had to leave the Hompton Hotel 4 days earlier because of this colossal tragedy. The hotel manager, Adrian, has refused to refund the money for the 4 days. Shame on them.

My friend recommended me this property when she visited Penang last month-singing praises on the location & dining that is why I decided to book to celebrate my birthday first time in Penang. :)

I reached just in time for check in and when I got to the room there was a birthday cake in the minibar fridge. What a surprise! Room was clean, has a fabulous view of the beach and of course clean sheets. I am definitely impressed!

Overall, staff were friendly (especially housekeeping staff) and ready to assist. And I wish the in-room dining hours starts earlier than 11am to accommodate guests who might want to leave hotel earlier for their itinerary or to the airport.

Definitely will recommend my friends and family to stay at the Hompton by the beach!

Comfortable, clean and practically located near the town end - accessible to bus routes, eateries (behind Viva food court).
Some areas are obviously well worn but there is a programme of maintenance. Service is prompt. Any issues are resolved with a smile. Reasonable food and beverage prices. Small pool crowded during weekends and holidays - not sure how clean the pool water is as many people are swimming in the water fully clothed. Very noisy. I avoided using it. There is a narrow beach. Of concern are visible open drainage pipes just draining into the beach so unclear how clean the beach is.
