Barcelo San Jose hotel is impecable in every respect- cleanliness, service etc. It has 3 restaurants to choose from: Japanese, all you can eat buffet, and another one with table sevice. I chose the bufet and the food was great. People are very friendly, kind and ready to help. Its all-around 5 star rating! You don't see many of those nowadays:)

There were some issues with the airport shuttle where we were pushed into ordering a private shuttle when our flight was delayed. There were some stains on the hotel sheets and the service at the restaurants was quite slow. The property itself is beautiful and in a pretty good location.

Our overall stay was nice. We especially enjoyed the pool and refreshments at the pool. However the check in took a full half an hour, we had to stand in a long line to check in and there was only one person working. We were exhausted after flying for 14 hours and they dont seem to care. There were other employees behind the desk and they should have had 2 people checking us in. We also asked for a room with 2 beds via email 3 days ahead and they made it sound like they were going to accommodate us but when we got there it was still one bed and we asked again and they gave us our key and acted like we would be getting a room with 2 beds but we didnt, so we had to share one bed. We wont be staying there again. It should not be rated a 9 on expedia.

Very nice pool area. Lunch and dinner food wasn’t great and a little pricey. Breakfast was very good though. Rooms were very nice, but weren’t stocked with any towels. Room service took over 1.5 hours before we gave up on waiting.

Had a wonderful stay! The premium level was very good, croissants and bread were fresh every day. Complimentary beer and wine every night was a great way to end the day. Breakfast at the restaurant was just ok, bread was always stale. Oatmeal and eggs were good. Towels seemed to be in short supply. Wash cloths were not provided until we asked for them, were not given back after sending them to wash. The grounds were lovely and picturesque. We had to use earplugs to sleep, the traffic from the highway was very loud. Airport transfers worked out perfectly to and from with no issues. All in all a great stay.

The hotel airport shuttle operates only 2 hourly which is hopeless. A taxi from the airport costs c.$40 and so bear this in mind if choosing this hotel based on cost. When we stayed, live music played from 9 pm until midnight which was incredibly loud. All lyrics could be heard in our room which was annoying and intrusive, impeding sleep. The hotel is dated. The reception staff are unhelpful and unfriendly. The bellman was very helpful.

Nice stay at the Barcelo Hotel in San Jose.
It feels quite luxurious. The staff is helpful and professional. Many amenities and hobbies possibles around the resort.
The decor could be a bit update but maybe the whole concept is about the vintage style.
The morning buffet was good and had a lot of varieties.
Whether it is with your loved ones, family or for work, I would definitely recommand.

The hotel is beautiful, great amenities and delicious breakfast with lots to choose from. The staff are so kind and friendly, helping you with everything you need. The down size is the location, which you can’t walk anywhere, you do need a uber/cab for everything. The pool is a bit cold, but for some they would say “refreshing”. Overall, we really enjoy our time there. Really great!!!

I’ve genuinely never stayed anywhere quite like this—and not in a good way. This hotel is so far from 5-star, it’s hard to know where to begin.
On arrival, there was just one person working at reception during what we were told is peak season. You’re forced into a single queue for everything—check-in, broken room keys, general queries—which meant a long wait just to get to the desk. Unsurprisingly, no one in the queue seemed happy.
The rooms are incredibly dated—like stepping back into the 1970s. Everything feels old and tired, right down to a corded phone mounted on the bathroom wall. It’s not charming or retro, just in serious need of an update.
Breakfast was completely average—nothing you’d expect from a hotel positioning itself as 5-star.
The pool itself is decent, but it was so overcrowded that people were sitting on the floor due to a lack of seating. Towels also ran out and weren’t replenished, despite asking multiple times.
At best, this is a 3-star hotel charging 5-star prices. I wouldn’t recommend it.

I would like to begin by highlighting some positive aspects: initially, the team was very efficient in managing the addition of two extra days to our reservation and the transportation from the airport. Likewise, the staff was always very friendly and did their best with the available resources and the obstacles they faced.

However, I regret to inform you that the hotel does not seem to be prepared for peak season in terms of staffing, towel availability, and cleanliness. My husband is a very light sleeper, and although we requested a room change because our stay was for two weeks, we were placed on the fifth floor, in the room next to the elevator and below the lounge. The noise of tables and chairs being moved until 10:30 p.m. made it extremely difficult for him to rest, and we could not be relocated because the hotel was full.

On the other hand, I had a serious health issue related to the breakfast buffet. I was recovering from food poisoning for four days; after temporarily moving to another hotel to rest, I became ill again immediately after eating at the buffet upon my return.

Additionally, we experienced daily inconveniences with the towel service, as we had to wait until after 4:00 p.m. to receive them. Finally, we noticed that the pool area does not have enough shade or seating for the number of guests.

I usually leave positive reviews about my stays, but this time the experience was

A beautiful stay from start to finish!
Barceló San José was such a wonderful experience and truly exceeded our expectations. The property itself is absolutely stunning.. lush, well-maintained grounds that feel like a peaceful escape the moment you arrive. The pool area is gorgeous and inviting, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

The staff was exceptional.. warm, welcoming, and always ready to help with anything we needed. You can really feel the level of care and pride they have in making your stay comfortable.
The airport shuttle was a huge bonus. reliable, easy, and took so much stress out of arrival and departure days. Such a thoughtful convenience!

The restaurants were delicious, with a great variety of options. Every meal felt fresh and flavorful, and it was so nice having quality dining right on-site without needing to leave the property.

Our room was beautiful, clean, and comfortable.. exactly what you want after long travel days. It felt like a perfect balance of cozy and elevated.

And for everything you get, the value is incredible. This stay felt like a luxury experience without the heavy price tag.
We absolutely loved our time here and would stay again in a heartbeat! 💛

However, the biggest disappointment was the city itself. A sad place, filthy, nothing to see. If I travel to CR again, I would avoid San Jose as much as possible.

Our flight landed at 11:00 a.m., but the hotel’s free shuttle would not pick us up until 1:00 p.m. due to check-in time. After being awake since 3:00 a.m. and with nowhere to go for two hours, we took an Uber to the hotel so we could eat and rest.

The grounds are beautiful, and most of the staff were kind and professional. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill once we reached our room. We were told no upgrades were available despite our Expedia VIP status. The assigned room had a strong, unpleasant odor, old dingy carpet, and felt very dated. After a short nap, I woke up with a severe headache and nausea from the smell.

When we reported the issue, we were initially told we would need to pay for an upgrade. Thankfully, the manager, Brandon, was understanding and moved us to a room on the premium floor. The smell was gone, but the room was still dated, with a noticeable dip in the mattress. Linens were clean, and the view was nice.

Food at the hotel was disappointing overall, though breakfast was acceptable and the café con leche helped. The lobby felt plain and lacked the atmosphere expected from a hotel that markets itself as five-star. Evening piano music was a nice touch, and drinks were reasonably priced.

Housekeeping was inconsistent. After returning from a full-day tour, our room had not been serviced except for removed towels, and housekeeping knocked late in the afternoon instead.

Just don’t go… The hotel does not have many options for at resort activities. The pool area is nice. The options for dining is poolside restaurant, Japanese restaurant, and a cafe. The bar area seating is horrendous. The hotel wants you to primarily use room service. Had to ask for towels twice during the stay as the cleaning crew did not leave towels. Requested air port shuttle the day before our departure, the hotel said that they would call a taxi and we would need to pay for the taxi service. Ok, arrive downstairs and checked out of room, went to inquire about taxi. They told us that no taxi was requested m, and we would call UBER.. which uber is half the prices as the taxi in San Jose.

We liked our stay at this hotel, and like the Japanese restaurant, but here are things that could be better: initially we stayed in a room that was too noisy (facing freeway). Second, we would have liked to have more hand and face towels; there was only one for both my wife and I. The location of the hotel is not that good, in that there is no way to walk to any place, like outside restaurants and shops, so we had to always take taxis. The breakfast buffet was mediocre.

This hotel clearly used to be a very nice place, but it just hasn't been maintained and the location is less than ideal. For the price we paid, it was a fine experience, but I likely wouldn't stay again.

Because it is surrounded by highways it is impossible to explore the city or even walk to food nearby without taking a taxi (which, during peak traffic times, is a very slow process).

We had two rooms and the AC didn't work particularly well in either room and both had strange smells (one like a dentists office, the other was rather unpleasant). In one of the rooms the bathroom door was extremely hard to open/close.

Loved staying here! I’m a gym rat so the fact that they had a gym was AWESOME! They also have their own buffet and sushi restaurant. Their pool was beautiful and had hammocks. Staff was accommodating and they even have excursions you can book directly with the hotel. I went to Tortuga Island, Baldi Hot Springs and La Paz Waterfall - all booked through the hotel. I will come back to Hotel Barcelo, there is no doubt about it! Amazing 10/10 experience!

The property is a bit away from the airport and took a while to reach but was with the wait. It is a beautiful resort with well appointed rooms and a wonderful buffet breakfast. The airport shuttle was prompt and helpful, given the intense traffic in the area. We were upgraded to a suite which had a two bathrooms and a separate bedroom and patio overlooking beautiful sunsets. A fruit plate was delivered while we were out which was a nice touch. Nice place to stay.

The room was clean, the only gripe I have is there wasn’t a microwave in the room and getting a reply for the shuttle service was lacking. I ended up just getting an uber from the airport which took close to an hour, but that’s San Jose traffic at rush hour. Overall the stay was really great and I enjoyed the experience I had. I would absolutely stay there again. Breakfast was awesome and I recommend getting it included in your package and the executive lounge was cozy and the food was pretty decent all things considered. The happy hour is worth it alone and getting free drinks makes it all the more worth the money.

The grounds were really well maintained. The morning food was conveniently located, pretty good, had a variety of options and decent coffee. We attempted to get room service several times by calling and walking down to the front desk, however we were unsuccessful for over an hour. I received one of the most incredible massages I ever have.

Nuestra estancia fue muy buena, solo el transporte del aeropuerto no fue el planeado, el hotel aunque cuenta con transporte no va por los pasajeros si no te comunicas 72 horas antes de la llegada para que ellos se programen, en su defecto ellos te envían un transporte privado pero tú lo tienes que pagar.
Al llegar al hotel tuvimos algunas dificultades con el desayuno que aparentemente según la agencia que contratamos no lo habíamos incluido. La persona que nos recibió se llama Alonso Olivares, nos hizo las acomodaciones necesarias y nos instaló y durante nuestra estancia siempre estuvo al pendiente que estuviéramos bien y disfrutáramos del viaje. También Tania nos ayudó para que nos dieran un descuento en el desayuno y pues eso tomamos. No quisimos seguir teniendo más problemas porque no fue lo que planeamos, mejor decidimos gozar nuestra estancia en San José Costa Rica y disfrutar de sus alrededores.
Asegúrense de verificar y confirmar directamente con el hotel antes de llegar para evitar contratiempos.

Nice pool with poolside restaurant and bar. Beautiful setting.

My spouse and I enjoyed our stay very much. Barcelo is an oasis in the city.
They have friendly staff, a great property with a big pool and beautiful grounds and plenty of restaurant options. The Japanese restaurant was surprisingly very good. We also enjoyed the breakfast buffet. We also enjoyed the “premium lounge” that was included for a few $ more.

Breakfast was good with mix of local and international foods. We were on the 6th (premier) floor, so had access to the lounge. That was a great bonus, woth wines, beer, and a selection of food available all day as needed. Great hotel at a good price.

I love staying at this hotel. I always stay at this hotel, when I am in San Jose. The people who work there are always fabulous. The hotel itself is marvelous. The linens & bedding are wonderful. The shuttle service is excellent. The breakfast is delicious.
