This is a beautiful property in a pretty good location, but it's clear that it's no longer in its prime. I'm told it's changed hands several times over the years, and now it's got a skeleton staff. That said, our room was clean and comfortable enough, the shared areas are really nice, the views are fantastic, and it's a very good deal. You can walk to several good restaurants.

We stayed for one night in 3 rooms. We encountered a strong chlorine odor in two of the rooms, and also found hair all over a supposedly clean bed.

Additionally, parking is limited to apparently only 2 cars(we were able to fit 2 cars without bothering the spot that already had been taken), and the specific spot we had requested for accessibility reasons during the reservation process was not available upon arrival. Or I'm not sure if the one that was assigned to us was the accessible spot or not.

While not necessarily anyone’s fault, we were woken very early, around 5 a.m. or earlier, by two men speaking loudly outside both rooms on the same floor. A designated quiet time, at least until 6 a.m., would be appreciated.

Thanks to the office receptionist for the excellent welcome and for clearly explaining the rules and answering all my questions.

Thanks to the breakfast waitress who gave us excellent service in the morning.

Lovely new experience

The family was friendly and accommodating. Homemade breakfasts were tasty and nicely done. The view from the upper terrace was beautiful.
The parking was tricky-- four small car spots inside the gate connected to a short, steep apron, emptying to a busy road
Was easy to get to everything. The market, almost next door, had a great selection of fruits and veggies.

Not clean. I stayed there 6 nights and they did not once come and clean room or change towels. In addition a review of my credit card showed i was billed for the total week, which was correct and also billed separately for 1 night during the week and an another night the day after i left

It was a good place to stay. Everything was satisfactory. Breakfast was great. Everything was clean. It had the sweet Costa Rica charm we all love. The view was amazing of San Jose. The only complaint was that the TV didn’t really work the best, but only the kids had a problem with that. Traffic around there is a bit rough, but not impossible, and you could walk to restaurants and any shopping you may be interested in if you wanted to. Overall, we are pretty satisfied.

Overall my experience was very pleasant. My only suggestion is that they show a photo of the entrance. I arrived after dark and like others thought it was a closed down hotel. Thankfully i pulled up the listing and read the reviews while sitting outside and realized i had the correct place and i just needed to ring the bell. But other than that the place was amazing for the value!! I will definitely be back soon.

Great place to stay. Close to anything you need in escazu. There’s a local bus stop directly in front of the hotel that makes it very convenient to get to the Coca Cola bus station easily. The view from the hotel is very beautiful and even better from the 3rd floor area. Will stay here again.

Don’t let the outside fool you!! It looks like it is shut down/closed. But just go to the door and ring the bell. They will let you in to the most beautiful place. The big door scared the crap out of me. Looks like a haunted house out front but it is just the door that opens at a beautiful palace!

The hotel has a great view of the city from their second floor. The room we had had a kitchenette, we only stayed for one night at the end of our trip to be closer to the airport. It has a drive thru with a gate where you can fit two vehicles. The staff will provide you with a gate opener. The room was clean and not bad for a one night stay. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating.

We stayed in one of their smaller (and cheaper) rooms, but it had a spacious bath, good shower, lots of closet space for luggage, TV, fridge. And we had a nice dinner on the open terrace on the upper level.

Convenience hotel

We use this hotel for overnight stays normally related to airport pick-up and departure. Staff is friendly, parking secure and location quiet and reasonably close to the airport. It is also across from our favorite Indian restaurant. Price in season is as good as off season. If you are simply looking for a clean comfortable room with breakfast, this is it. If you need amenities with frills, this is not it.

Very hospitable, very clean, very nice staff. We stayed at the Marriott as well and the experience wasn’t even close to the one we had at Out of Bounds. After experiencing Costa Rica for 12 days, are party all agreed that the main stream hotels aren’t the way to go. this place was our favorite smaller hotel we stayed in out of the 4. Very, very, very nice people. Close to a safe area in the San Jose area with shooing and food within walking distance. We will be staying here the next time we come. Thanks Out of Bounds for an awesome time.

Nice hotel if you are looking for a bargain

I was not told before I arrived that my room did not have air conditioning. There was only a ceiling fan and some windows which when open left you with absolutely no privacy. I am allergic to cigarette smoke so it did not help that my neighbor stood outside my cracked window and smoked constantly. The picture of the hotel is a bit deceiving because the hotel is not well lit, therefore, single women it is a little spooky returning late at night and waiting on the sensors to turn on the lights as you go up the steep walkway. There was no parking lot, only 2 car spaces inside of the gate that was facing the street. The gate opened upon your arrival if it was within office hours, otherwise you would have to use the key to unlock a side door to enter the grounds. Uber had a hard time finding this location so make sure you download Google Translate to communicate and get rides if you do not speak Spanish. There are no shops or stores close by and the street is not conducive for walking. The staff was nice but they had a very limited breakfast menu. As a matter of fact, they did not serve any type of meat for breakfast and there were several ants at times that were bothersome. I think the stay could have been better had I been more prepared and familiar with the area and especially if I had air conditioning.

As Always, You're the Greatest

You guys are the best. Some might think the rooms a little Spartan, but I would not change a thing. The view of the lights of San Jose from my mountainside window at 2:00 a.m., shining through the mist, was mighty fine.

A Lovely Enjoyable hotel to stay!

It is an oasis of peace among trees and flowers (even mandarin orange trees)

Splendide view of mountains and city. Suites/rooms are spacious, well groomed and super comfy. Good breakfast, plenty of fresh fruits.

The friendly reception desk mgr. Fernando is more than efficient, polyglotte,helpful,

Passed by the hotel for one night to take a flight in the next morning. Despite the location and the irregular and small parking area, the staff was great and the room very clean. Everything was excellent for what we needed. The view of the city from the top room was marvellous.

Incredible view

Friendly Staff, Great B&B style hotel

Only stayed there for one night as we were heading out of San Jose the next morning. The hotel was very clean and the staff were very friendly. We had issues finding a rental car and the staff was very helpful in the arranging of a rental and allowing us to stay at the hotel while we waited for the rental company to arrive.

When we arrived at this hotel, we thought it was abandoned - no lights on the outside. Upon entering the compound, I told the person greeting us I was glad to be there. He replied, \"You are? Why?\" I thought that was a very strange way to be greeted.

He took us up to our room, passing by the office and the breakfast room, all of which had bars on the window. Our room, though, had no bars and a bathroom-door style lock, no deadbolt or chain. My wife said she didn't feel secure in the room.

She went to the person who greeted us, and told him she didn't think the room was secure, and he just folded his arms and told her \"It is secure!\" He said they had 10 cameras throughout the property, and someone watches them all night, but we didn't believe him.

We ended up leaving and going to a much nicer hotel just up the road.

They refused to refund our stay, and told us that the hotel is always full and that they have never had a problem there. We only saw one other guest there.

This property just felt strange, and we were not comfortable there, so we left.

When we called Expedia to discuss it with them, they called the hotel, and the hotel told them that we had been dealing with the night receptionist, and that the manager Fernando would be back tomorrow, but in fact it was Fernando who had checked us in.

I won't go back and I don't recommend this property. We visit this area frequently, and I wanted to try a different property on this trip, but I was very disappointed

Conveniently located, clean and private. This was an excellent choice if you do not require a large chain hotel facilities. This is a small Boutique hotel with limited aminities. Very private and accomodating. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean, cute and perfect for me as I was in Escazu for dental work and could walk to my apointment in less than five minutes.

Unexpected, affordable comfort....and great staff!

What a gem for a small boutique hotel....clean room, fabulous staff, plentiful choice of breakfast, easy to book attractions, on main bus line (easy). Walking distance to restaurants in Escazu.

Hotel manager Fernando will make you feel right at home and help with anything from ordering take out or sohwing you where best to get a spectacular view of Sano Jose and the valley.

I was in town for a DentaVac dental vacation (excellent quality and affordable) and the hotel couldn't have been more convenient. It's one of the hotels recommended by DentaVac too. The only drawback is no pool to lounge in but the front breakfast room and shared kitchen area offer plenty of room and the wifi is strong throughout the hotel, even outside.

Some of the upper rooms have that spectacular view travelers write about. It is truly impressive.

Only caution and it's not about the hotel: bring one of those little flashlights with you because most areas in Escazu have either broken sidewalks or no sidewalks and numerous holes and ditches. You don't eant to start your vacation with a limp!

Home away from Home

Enjoyed Out of Bounds Hotel very much. Largely due to the staff (Fernando couldn't do enough for us), cleanliness, and cozy quality of the hotel. View from the top deck was great, kitchenette room we had was perfect for an extended stay. Most soundproof rooms I've ever stayed in at ANY price.
