Not easy to get to an island without a boat

Room and breakfast was fine. BUT you have to remember that this is s small island 50 meters outside Vaxholm. The last two ferries depart at around 6 PM and 9 PM. After that you either swim or need to order a taxi boat for 30 EUR single way.

unclean rooms but lovely staff

as they had all gone home for the day our key was left in an onvelop on the desk with our name on it, when we got to the room the blankets and pillows had stains on them and the floor had not been swhept, there was hair all over and some scrap left behind, the air smellt crampt. now when we cald them about it they gave us the code to an empty room and sayd we could stay in the new room or just take the pillows and sheets from it. we chose to stay in the new room, it was clean, smellt cleaner and was slightly bigger witch we where happy with. now its not one big bed but rather 2 singles put together, this is probobly the norm but if you dont know its the case it might surprice you. the staf was very kind and made sure to make and put out breakfast even when we where the only guests at the hotell, sadly the museum wasent open but thats our fault for not checking befor booking. its a very lovely place but i wish they would clean the rooms beter.

Great place, really difficult to get in touch with the staff to ask about the free breakfast offering. Great place to stay at offseason, few neighbours and calm environment. There is a fridge where you can store your own food because there is no place to buy any at the kastellet-island. You can not cook anything so only bring ready to eat food.

Quirky- be sure to factor in the cost of boats

Cool building. Very expensive to get from/to each day as no facilities- they do have a deal with a local water taxi but still costly for a one minute trip- need to factor in.
Nice breakfast but overwhelmed by people and completely ran out of milk!
We did know showers not en suite but surprised how far away. Comfortable beds. Clean. WiFi intermittent. No tv. Felt like a posh hostel.

Barely met anyone who worked there. Our keys was in an envelope, and we checked out without having spoken to a single employee at the hotel.

A unique spot! Bit odd to have to get a ferry at the set times to the island but I loved it for that. Lovely to wander around the fort on an evening. Breakfast was not fine-dining but perfectly adequate for my needs.

Wow, staying in a real castle is very cool! My son and I really enjoyed the view from our room, the great breakfast and the peace and quiet. The museum was really well done and made us appreciate the unique history of the castle and where we were staying. The ferry stopped at 7:40 p.m., so if we wanted to stay later in town that might have been an issue, but it wasn't for us and we loved staying here.

Fun place to stay in Vaxholm. It isn't luxurious but it was perfectly comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. Definitely worth arranging to be dropped off at Kastellet by the ferry company (we didn't buy it saves time and money). You need to get to grips with the ferry to and from the main island. We had a very nice family room in the annex overlooking the sea but it wasn't en suite.

Interesting and unique opportunity to spend the night in a centuries-old military citadel. The breakfast is fine. Our biggest complaint/recommendation has to do with the things NOT provided. Be aware that the shower rooms are communal and we were surprised to find that no soap or shampoo is provided. Also, there is a ferry (3 minute ride) that you must use each time you want to leave the island to shop or explore and it can become quite costly if you need to make many trips (about $10USD roundtrip). It would be very good if the b&b provided some sort of complimentary pass or two. Also, there is a small museum on the island and again, a complimentary pass for hotel guests would be a nice amenity.

It's good value. It was a surprise that the hotel is part of the barracks in the fortress now open as bed & breakfast, we got to explore the entire fortress. Unmanned ferry boat every 15 minutes to Växholm is convenient. Shared shower and bathrooms are clean and not bad if hotel guests are only 50% of the capacity like during our stay. Breakfast is excellent especially the fresh baked bread.

It's a hostel, not a B&B

The room was damp with paint coming off the walls and the bathroom / toilet / shower down the hall shared with other guests does not make for comfortable living. There was a queue for the shower in the morning and my partner found faeces on the floor left by another guest. This is more like a hostel than a B&B and if we could have found availability in another hotel would have moved.

A Fortress with a Remarkable B&B

We have stayed twice at Kastellet/Vaxholm during our visits to Sweden. We are accustomed to comfortable and well-run accommodations, but this one takes the prize. It is unique, comfortable, historic and the lady who runs it (I believe her name is Eva) is delightful. Her breakfast with home baked breads and a beautiful spread of delectable and fresh foods was a highlight for us. We love this B&B!

Unique experience in lovely surroundings

This was a really interesting and unique experience. The rooms were a good size and the shared bedrooms were nice and clean. The only downside was that there was no staff anywhere when we arrived. There weren't any issues it just felt a bit strange letting ourselves in and taking the keys. That aside, I don't have anything bad to say. I probably wouldn't stay here more than 1 night but I would definitely recommend giving it a go!

Adventure in both a good and bad way

This is a B and B that is part of an island fortress about 1/2 drive north east of Stockholm. The ferry to it runs every 15 minutes from about 10 am to 9:30 pm at the height of the tourist season. If you miss it you will have to hire a private water taxi for an exorbitant amount of money. Then you will have to traverse a long extent of loose gravel that will not allow you to roll your suitcase. Then you will have to haul the suitcases up and down steep stone steps. There is staff only in the morning to serve breakfast, which as is a mentioned in most reviews, includes delicious bread. There is no other place to get food on the island but the town of Vaxholm is right across the very narrow strait. The washrooms are separate from the rooms and are communal, though they do afford privacy. They get pretty messy after a few people have had showers and used the toilets. The bedrooms have no tv and poor wifi so there is nothing to do but enjoy the scenery which is beautiful. The rooms are large and the beds are comfortable. If you can put up with all the inconveniences for the experience of sleeping in a fortress on an island in the middle of some spectacular scenery then it is worth it. If you prefer creature comfort this is not the place for you.

didn't really know what to expect. My husband was particularly excited about being in a castle on an island. As we visited in low season a lot of things were closed but that added to the peace. Room spacious and clean.

Unique experience - difficult to get to

While it is neat to stay overnight in a castle, the breakfast is great and the staff friendly - there are some things to keep in mind when booking this hotel: the hotel is on an island. There is a free ferry but it only runs from 1100-1700 on days the castle museum is open. At all other times is costs varying amounts of money. Parking is difficult and crowded in Vaxholm. Bathrooms for this hotel are communal - the showers/toilets themselves are private but you do have to walk down the hall to get to them. Internet is available but not always reliable. The hotel staff is not there at night (we arrived and essentially checked ourselves in).

Castle on an Island!

We had a great stay! Really fun location like a castle on a small small island. You need to use the ferry service to the island (free if you stay at the B&B). The last posted ferry departure time was at 5 PM when we visited. Just plan accordingly. There are no food services on the island in the evening. We brought a light dinner. There were actually later ferries but it was not posted on the schedule. Check in with the tourism office to get direction about where to park. I parked at the school a 5-10 walk away from the ferry. The breakfast was really great. Fantastic visit!

We were delighted to be able to stay in a fortress on an island in the Stockholm Archipelago, and our children loved running around the fort at night. HOWEVER, the service might be the worst ever. The main problem is how they deal with transport information. The staff are not only not helpful, but are actually misleading. After talking to some locals in Vaxholm, it seems this is because they own the water taxi in Vaxholm and WANT YOU TO BE STRANDED in Vaxholm or Kastellet so that you will have to call the 20 euro water taxi. Thus, when you are in the hostel, the only information you will find is a sign in Swedish with times to and from Vaxholm, giving the impression that it is not possible to get to and from the small island without stopping in Vaxholm. What you should know is this: 1. If you are coming to/from Stockholm, you do not need to stop in Vaxholm. Some regularly scheduled ferries do stop at Kastellet, and this is in the ferry timetable; you can buy a ticket to/from Stockholm without changing or paying twice. An example of a ship that stops in Kastellet is the Sandhamn. If you are departing Kastellet, you will need to raise the semaphore, but don't worry, the ship will stop. 2. Their 'free' boat to/from Vaxholm is rubbish, as it only runs on a very limited schedule. Thus, if you are staying on a Sunday night and you go to Vaxholm expecting the boat to Kastellet, it will not be running even though they know you are trying to get there.

Fun night's stay.

This was an amazing chance to stay someplace different. They were very helpful in checking us in even though we were the only guests that night. They also prepared a complete and varied breakfast for just the two of us. You should be aware, however, you need to take a ferry or water taxi to the island where the B&B is located. Because we arrived after 5 p.m. the cheaper ferry was not running. We had to call a water taxi to be taken the short distance to the Kastellet for about $30 one-way. Really fun place to stay if you are willing to share bathrooms.

Great b&b , the island experience was fun. Delightful staff. Real fun experience.
Take an evening picnic over and picnic outside the fortress overlooking the water, loads cheaper than eating in Vaxholm.
One member of our group walked with walking stick, it was quite a walk through the fortress to the B & B and pulling bags along so maybe not ideal for those with mobility problems .
Cost of morning /evening taxi was 200 krona so quite pricey , try and share.

amazing Kastellet

the boat or taxi from the main Vaxholm Isle to Kastellet is inconvenient and expensive. 300 Swedish Kroners forty five us dollars for a water taxi at your service on your personal schedule... or a ferry on a preset not so user friendly schedule for 90SOK or fourteen us dollars- a couple times a day for food or activities really adds up fast. BNB hosts were kind and helpful for the few hours a day they were there. Rooms were nice, what you would think of a castle. Water for the showers was warm and plentiful. Breakfast was the standard scandinavian fare yogurt dried fruit sliced meats and cheeses. and a full coffee bar with tea's and the works. Be sure to have a very flexible schedule if you plan on staying here!

Dålig luft i rummen går det att öppna fönstren?
Dålig information om hur man kommer med båt från ön ni borde ha tidtabeller på hotellet. Alldeles för dyrt att komma till ön.
Vattenkaraffer eller vattencistern borde finnas på rummet eller i hall
Ni borde satsa på bättre kaffe.
Annars jättecharmigt hotell som vi återkommertill varje år.

Bed and Breakfast i själva kastellet. Personalmöte incheck/utcheck. Rent. Frukosten helt ok. Badrum/dusch/toa i korridoren delas med övriga rum. Inget vatten på rummet men gick att hämta glas i receptionen. Två sängar som står bredvid varandra men som inte är ihopsatta i dubbelrum.

Renligheten var under all kritik, smutsiga badrum och väggarna hängde det dammtussar från. Frukosten fanns det man behövde men samma där, yoghurt förpackningarna var smutsiga som att de tappats i backen utan att blivit avtorkade, ostar med osthyvel som alla gäster tog i för att få av en skiva. Positiva är att det var väldigt svalt i rummen så man sov bra.

Great potential, but needs better maintenance

Place is beautiful and breakfast was good, but there’s no personnel on island and that seems to cause some problems. Cleaning could have been better, but our main issue was with showers. Their (we tried two in lower floor) temperature control was broken resulting with really hot water being the only option. And no personnel on location meant that there was no-one to fix them..

Men, VARNING för B&B!!
Kolla NOGA recensioner och missa inga detaljer!

Svårt att hitta receptionen. Obemannat.
Ostädat. Ohygieniskt, både döda och levande småkryp.
Undvik rum 1 - 11 på botten! Mögellukt. Mörkt, utsikt; stenvägg.

För barn, rörelsehindrade och äldre kan detta vara en hälsorisk! För barnfamiljer en risk för mental kollaps. Det är en utmaning, inte avkoppling, att bo här.
Uteslutet om du inte är i fysisk och mental toppform. Många trappor, inga ramper eller hiss.
Rekommenderas endast till backpackers med egen mat och till soldater på fältövning, som kan tänka sig att betala minst 1300 kr per natt för att bo i en grotta.

Vi valde att lämna rummet orört p.g.a många anledningar. Som tur är hade vi bara en natt och åkte hem bara *2200 kr fattigare för känslan att ha blivit lurad och bestulen på kvalitetstid. *(Inkl resor med färjan fram och tillbaka och parkering i Vaxholm)

Stackars de som betalat för flera nätter och utan möjlighet att ta sig hem eller få tag i annat boende.

Hur någon kan ha samvete att driva utan att förbättra service och info år efter år?

MAT. ta med dig mat och utrustning som inför en fjällvandring.
Skillnaden är att naturen har levande växter, här är allt dött och visset. Och skräpigt.

Om Du missat ovanstående, räkna med extra kostnader för färja el. taxibåt för att äta efter kl 14.

Hade behövt 3 ggr så många tecken att skriva recension.

Top b&b, både for familie og par

Et alletiders sted. Super hyggeligt og på selve kastellet. En lille ø med en omkreds på blot 650m. Man sejler dertil med kabelbåd fra Vaxholm - 2 min rejse. Værelserne er fine og den samlede oplever var autentisk og helt som den skulle være.

Väldigt nöjd med vistelsen men saknade att man inte kunde brygga/köpa kaffe efter kl 18 någonstans på ön. Installera gärna en kaffeautomat eller ge gästerna tillgång till vattenkokare. Tack!

Det var mörkt när vi kom fram och belysningen och vägvisningen var dålig till B o B. Det var mycket kallt på nedre plan och i frukost utrymmet så om man satt där fick man ha ytterkläderna på sig. Vi ringde på kvällen om värmen men fick till svar att dom inte kunde göra något då och att vi kunde äta frukost på rummet, men vi var 4
i sällskap och ville äta tillsammans. Även rummen var kalla. På kvällen fanns det inget varmvatten i duscharna även fast vi spolade långe. Det var svårt att hitta till julbordet. ingen skyltning.

There are very many spiders overall, 5 only in one bathroom. There was no breakfast prepared but sandwiches prepared one day before and left in a box in the fringe . When looking for things in the kitchen we could see bread on a basket and half open packages of bread which should be throughout, but looked like they could be served at some point to next gests. The space around the fort is poorly maintained.

Nous avons dû prendre une navette (bateau) 10€ pour déposer nos bagages. Supplement. 500 d,aller retour dans les graviers acec les valises. A l'arrivée, aucun personnel, une enveloppe sur un comptoir avec notre nom. Hotel en self service. WC et douches collectives comme a l'auberge de jeunesse mais au prix du 3 etoiles. La chambre (sans vue) située au-dessus des tables extérieures. Nous avons (enfin) pu dormir à 2h.
Réveil 8h (les fameuses tables)... unique point positif, le petit déjeuner était parfait !
10h le lendemain nous partons ravis de voir enfin quelqu'un a l'accueil. Dommage le jeune homme n'a meme pas daigné relever la tête, ni nous saluer. Nous avons reposé la clé et fuit cet endroit...

Bo på kastellet

Enkelt boende på kastellet. Eftersom det är byggt på 1800-talet är standarden därefter. Standard helt ok och mycket bra frukost för att vara ett vandrarhem.

Kastellet är ett bra B&B med ok frukost och rena städade rum. Ett minus är att aircond saknades. Dusch och toalett i korridoren såklart.
Prisvärt! Färja till ön gratis för boende på B&B.

Fantastiskt rakt igenom! Vilket ställe! Bokade ett rum med havsutsikt för en parresa och vi satt och kollade på solnedgången hela kvällen. Även om det kastellet ligger avskilt på en liten ö var det smidigt att ta sig över och njuta av allt som Vaxholm har att erbjuda. Rummet var fräscht och välstädat och väldigt charmigt samtidigt som det var lugnt och tyst och man märkte knappt av de andra gästerna. Rekommenderar verkligen att man åker hit!

Annorlunda upplevelse

Väldigt annorlunda upplevelse, speciellt att få vandra runt fästningen nattetid. Litet minus var de papperstunna dörrarna och väggarna som släppte in allt ljud från våra hänsynslösa grannar, men det kan ju inte Bed & Breakfast rå för. Frukosten var toppen.
