They must upgrade heating/cooling system

One room controls heat for floor, if they put it on heat to avoid very cold nights, our room got to 28 degrees. Bed not comfortable and room smelled very moldy, we had to buy febreeze.

On plus side, staff very nice, good breakfast, fair price. Overall, would never stay there again.

I liked the location to transportation.
I didn't like the neighborhood. It was noisy and rowdy at night. There was a vagrant hanging outside making noise & police had to be called to remove him. The facilities was just adequate and the free breakfast was just barely adequate.
I liked the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.

Nice place to stay if you plan to visit Hindu Temples , traveling via UG station. Lot of south Indian shops close by.
Could be nice to reduce bar music during Friday and Saturday night in the bar.

One night concert stay

One night trip for two to see Iron Maiden at the O2,amazing that this was the famous pub connected too this band and displayed items to show this in the bar/restaurant at the front of the hotel.
Check in at hotel excellent,polite and efficient,building and room very good and modern,good size room and private bathroom,excellent offers in the restaurant ,free drink with food at very reasonable prices and the burgers we had were the best quality as was the breakfast in the morning-hot/cold buffet that was lovely and well organised in the restaurant that had been well cleaned from the evening before.
Bad points not the nicest of areas,found some hairs in room and our two single beds had poor mattresses and only one flat pillow each.
Good points 0.4 miles from West Ham station,nice modern hotel and room,polite helpful staff,good wi fi,very good food offers ,good choice of beer at very reasonable prices and two pool tables-out is 5 for a budget hotel I would happy to give 4 and would happily stay here again if the prices were right-pity the beds weren’t more comfy.

Hotel itself was pleasant enough though would not recommend young women to stay alone, or with other female company due to the suburb that the hotel is situated in. My friend and I were concerned for our safety at all times of the day. Let alone at night. Breakfast was lovely, plenty of selection. Room is air conditioned. Rooms are small. But overall good for the price. Hotel staff were pleasant.

Noisy and broken lighting

Booked a Family room 2x adults 2x 7yr olds. Extremely noisy music until late and loud traffic noise outside. Photos very deceiving, room was very run down. 1 bedside spotlight broken off wall and the other not working, only had awful emergency style glaring light in room too bright for kids to sleep with. Raised it with reception and told they would send someone to look or provide bedside lights but no-one did. Poor quality and poor service. Very disappointing.

Hotel was ok for the price. Rooms need a bit of sprucing up. Mattresses need replacing - there was a massive dip in the middle of each bed. Also the pillows (strictly 1 each) were tiny. But can’t complain for the price. Was un aware there was a car park on the side of the hotel so parked a mile away. Breakfast buffet wasn’t worth going to. But not bad for the price.

Check-in was fast and informative. The room was ready when we arrived at noon. The room was just like the pictures: very simple but all we needed. The beds were very comfortable, as were the pillows. The room was warm and comfortable. There was A/C in the room, but tricky to figure out. Free WiFi in the room.
East Ham underground train station is very close, just an 8 minute walk down High Street, then a half hour ride on Hammersmith/District lines to all the tourist spots. There are bus stops pretty close by too.
The free buffet breakfast downstairs in the Ruskin Arms pub was good with lots of selection: milk, OJ, coffee, tea, toast, hashbrowns or chicken nuggets, sausage, beans, eggs, cereals, fruit, buns, yogurt, pancakes, cheese, salad, scones, crumpets and jam, and even cupcakes and cookies. The food was lukewarm but apart from those mystery sausages I still enjoyed it.
Cleaning staff need improvement. One day we were only given half of the normal towels (front desk was very apologetic and gave me a whole stack). The water glasses weren't cleaned, mouth prints still on the glass. The beds were made daily but the bedding wasn't changed at all during our 6 night visit. There was a super greasy hand print on the wall, and the shower had rust stains and the corners were moldy.
Avoid the younger man working at the pub. We had a simple order, 2 mains & 2 drinks, but he became very frustrated and walked away from us, made someone else help us and just had a very bad attitude.

Rooms required a renovations. Not all electrical outlets are in working condition, clogged sink. Towels bars should be moved up from toilets and garbage cans.
Staff are very friendly and professional. Breakfast was good, with decent variety.

The price is right but....

If you are looking for an ECONOMICAL bed close to transportation (5 minute walk from East Ham tube and DISTRICT line that takes you right to the heart of London) while touring the London area, this is your place. If you are looking for something more in your 'overnight' experience, keep scrolling to the next hotel. A word of warning (or interest?) and doing my best to be politically correct, you are in a VERY ethnically diverse area. People MAY NOT have the same standard(s) of personal and/or physical hygiene as you! Also, though the food looks good (and may well be) ours spent WAY too much time somewhere(?) between the kitchen and our table. I heard this from a few other residents too. As an example, our tray of nachos was like a car hubcap with everything held together by hardened cheese. That said, if you are willing to experiment, there are MANY ethnically themed (Chinese, Cantonese, Indian, Pakistani, Middle Eastern/Mediterranean) as well as pizza and "KFC-type" places within a 5 minute walk. The staff seemed to want to help but until "The Manager" comes on at 0700, you are hooped if you have an issue. Cleanliness was bad (we cleaned our room on arrival with an entire package of Lysol wipes and NO, WE ARE NOT CLEAN FREAKS!) - I was being generous when I scored it. It looks like it was renovated about 2 years ago and no maintenance done since. As an added bonus though, it did have AC which I found unusual when looking for a room. Price was great but again, Buyer beware

Easy to get to location from Stratford. Comfortable and clean throughout. With a bar/restaurant below serving food and drinks all day. If you don’t fancy eating in the bar area you can take your meals up to your room. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Would stay again.

If you value sleep, don’t stay here.

I will start with the pros:

Cheap drinks.
Convenient to underground station.
Decent breakfast buffet.
The man and women who Staff the buffet were incredibly friendly.

Now the Cons:

Quite possibly the worst mattresses we have ever slept on. We honestly believe they may have been on old box springs. I am still in constant pain thanks to these mattresses.
The hotel is located directly above of a pub and a night club. There are no rules to when it ends so at about 3 AM the music shuts off but all the party guest stand ther outside under your windows smoking and screaming. When we went to the front desk repeatedly about this we were just told “oh it’s OK another 20 minutes“ well that 20 minutes lasted another two hours.
While it’s close to the underground station you are a good 40 minute out to get into the city. There are literally 19 stops from your hotel to the city center.
Housekeeping does not actually clean your room when requested. They do not change sheets or vacuum, they merely take out the trash and give you new towels.

Budget - Gets what you pays for!

A good cheep rate hotel that is showing the signs of age.
The rooms are OK but there is often something broken - shower door, toilet roll holder, curtain or blinds etc. The comfort level of the beds is hit and miss, some are really great but others uncomfortable.
Get there early if you want to park in the car park.
A 5-10 minute walk to the nearest tube.

4 Years a repeat customer

For 4 years on the go I have been attending a conference in London at the Excel centre and every time I have been to the Ruskin Hotel. Why? Everything works well here at this reasonable priced London hotel from the check-in through to the the immense buffet breakfast. ( From 7am as well which is a godsend if you have to be somewhere at 8am.) The rooms are clean and functional and I've never had anything break or had to call reception.

The Ruskin Hotel is a short walk from East Ham Tube station and an Uber to the Excel centre ( due to laziness) cost me £12. If you don't want to get an Uber you can get a bus right there.

If the conference is back on next year I will be back at the Ruskin Hotel for the 5th year in a row.

No gluten free, wheat free, dairy free options except fruit, I emailed this to the hotel prior our visit to notify them and seeking information but received no reply. Family room was very spacious, the floor creaked everytime you walked around the room, the bathroom was equipped for a disabled person (we didn't require it though), sink was too small for a family of 4, lighting in the room could be improved, only 4 small pillows in the room however received 4 more after asking reception, room was above the pub and although told that by 1030pm the music would be turned off this was not the case, did not bother us that much but if travelling with younger kids this could be an issue. Cleanliness was an issue, however beds were made and towels changed daily. Staff were extremely helpful and nice, location was great for the event we were attending with taxi service and airport shuttle from the hotel, bus service just outside and east ham train station just 10 mins walking.

Ruskin Arms for Ride London 100 2017

This hotel was an excellent place to stay to take part in the Ride London event. The hotel was right behind the event and did all it could to make our stay excellent. For example, breakfast was earlier than normal. The staff couldn't be more helpful or polite.
As an option for visiting the East End I would also recommend the Ruskin Arms. It is well situated and has good facilities for the price range.

You get what you pay for...

How you rate a hotel depends very much on your personal expectations and the type of hotel you usually enjoy. Prior to booking I'd read reviews which suggested that although the area wasn't so great the hotel was good and provided value for money and as we were going to be out at a concert all day on the Saturday we decided to give it a shot especially with the free parking which meant that we could drive down. To be fair it was functional but I have to point out though in the strongest terms that this is a no frills budget hotel and our room was very bland and basic and although we had a fairly large room it only had small window which made it dark and oppressive. It also had a connecting door to the next room which made it very noisy especially at 7am!. The standard of cleanliness may be ok for some but it wasn't good enough for us, the walls and skirting boards were dirty and there was a large stain on the carpet and divan base and the chair had suspicious stains which made it impossible to sit on although I have to say that the bed and bathroom were clean. You certainly do get what you pay for, I've learnt that lesson here .......

A step up from a motel 6

The overall experience was fine. We stayed 7 nights. The price was great. The morning buffet was adequate but after 6 mornings it gets old. The toilet ran constantly and quit flushing at one point. The staff fixed that in minutes, but the constant running never quit. The front door to our room needed to be repaired. It's an older building. Beds were fine, shower was good. It's not in the best part of town. That would be my biggest complaint. If the hotel was in a better neighborhood I would stay there again. For a place to sleep while we spent the day in Central London it worked fine

If you're after the heart of pomp and ceremony don't stay here. If you want to stay in vibrant multicultural London this is your place. Great room, great staff and, for us, great location. Visit the Hindu Temple, Fabric Shops, Great Restaurants (or the food at the Ruskin is great pub grub).

The hallway door frame had chunks missing from it and the hall walls had chunk missing from them in certain areas. Our bathroom was disgusting......makeup on the walls, toilet refuse to flush on it and therefore you have to keep pressing the button in other for it to flush, there was urine and stains on the tiles insider the shower, the bed was very uncomfortable, the bedside table had used tissues on it and was covered with nail varnish on the side, the chair leg was fallen off and the view wasn't nice. However, the gentle man that checked us in was friendly and welcoming. Sadly can't upload the images I've got on my phone to show as evidence.

Clean but too basic, not much attention to detail

Selected hotel because it was the closest to where I was going. Quite clean with very polite staff. The room was clean too so was the shower, although it appears someone got too excited installed 'LED' lighting but must have installed really dim lights leaving rooms too dim especially the bathroom- those lumens must have been equivalent to 25-30 watts. I thought the rooms were clean- maybe its the lights that were too dim :).
Blocked drain in shower and broken items like showerhead and toilet paper holder.

Don't be put off as these are things they can quickly fix- in fact when I reported, they were willing to act straight away but I said I could make do.
It does the job if your aim is just a bed to sleep on and not luxury and frills.

Good budget hotel in East Ham

It's as if a mini-Ibis had been tacked onto the back of a big old sports-bar pub, and then dropped into a suburb of Lahore. The area is very mixed, "vibrant" but pretty safe I'm guessing, I've stayed there a few times without any hint of trouble or stress. The rooms are modern, basic, clean, have TV and tea-making stuff, free WiFi, air con etc.

The rooms in the new part are quieter than those in the old part (traffic, plus the outdoor smoking area is audible until closing time), but otherwise are to the same standard. The modern reception is separated from the pub at the side, and there's secure parking out back (but not much so get there earlier if you need it).

Breakfast is a hot and cold buffet in the bar, included in the price and it's actually bigger, better and more varied than most budget hotel breakfasts. In the evening the bar has the usual uninteresting beers and cooks standard pub favourites until quite late, along with all the TV football (and noisy pool games) you can watch.

Excellent value for money in East Ham

The hotel is located above a pub, with friendly staff and clean and fairly well-maintained rooms in good general condition. In-room safe and easily accessible power sockets are worth mentioning. East Ham Underground station is three bus stops away and can also be walked to. The area is quite South Asian influenced and an off licence shop that is open late is just nearby.

This is a very nice hotel, it was exactly what I was looking for. My room was just big enough, and was clean, quiet, and comfortable. There was plenty of hot water and the bathroom was quite large for a single room. The staff were friendly and it was nice that the front desk was manned 24/7 because some mornings I left early, so I didn't have to worry about bothering anyone to let me out, someone was always at the desk. The hotel is just a few blocks from the East Ham station, and I always felt safe walking, even after dark, because the area is well lit and populated by families. I would definitely go back!

5 nights at Ruskin

Did what it had to do and will use again. Right for the price and busy with tourists which if I was visiting London I'd have personally looked for something else.
Business though, ideal, room wasn't cleaned very well, dead flies still on Window and floor from night 2 when I left on day 5.
Lots of food available for breakfast but basic.
Pub food was fine and for £20 a meal and several pints can't be complained at for London.
A mile & half walk in both directions (main road) found open parkland for a relaxing walk after work

For what it was I considered this to be quite an expensive overnight.

We stayed on business, it's not the best area but the car park, although very limited, was secure. It's a first come first served basis.

The bar downstairs was noisy with live music and we therefore couldn't eat in the hotel as planned.

The area is full of Asian restaurants and fast food, nothing particularly good.

The room was clean and modern.

Breakfast next morning was a buffet and very good.

For the price we paid I considered the hotel to be expensive, but it was close to where we needed to be. I have seen it listed cheaper since in which case I'd increase the value rating.

Last minute booking, not sure what to expect.
Nothing to worry about
Staff friendly and polite, no problems checking in or out
Key card lasted all four nights without having to be re-coded
Good sized room, en-suite, cleaned and towels changed daily,Warm, Quiet, comfortable breakfast served in the pub downstairs,

The Ruskin Hotel is ideally situated in East Ham for easy walking access to the Bolyn football ground and is close to the East Ham tube station. The reception staff were very efficient and welcoming. There is lift access to all floors and the room was modern with en-suite and tea/coffee making facilities. The included breakfast was great with a choice of hot or cold food. The attached bar was lively and had a great range of reasonably priced food available. There is a large screen and several smaller screens showing live sport. All in all a great reasonably priced hotel.

The staff were very friendly and helpfull. A bood basic cooked breakfast. If you have a problem they will sort it. I had in the evening fish and chips, i thought it was a small whale. I will stay hear again.

Could be alot better - Ruskin Hotel - East Ham

Clean and tidy room, nice clean bathroom, adjoining pub is useful to say the least, room curtains were like a j cloth, total waste of time, shower water pressure too low, mattress was like a carrier bag with bubble wrap in it, not at all comfy. Breakfast was ok/good, as much as you wanted of a wide range of English, European food, coffee was good too. Staff were nice enough, local area is a bit rough round the edges to say the least, I wouldn't go back, I just needed to get somewhere quickly to get my head down before a conference at Excel the next day and for the money I paid (half the price of the Holiday Inn) it suited that purpose.

Basic hotel with easy access to London

This was a basic hotel which met our needs for our stay. The price was good for the room and it was much cheaper than staying in London. It took about 35mins to get in to London each morning, which was manageable. The room was clean, but had a few problems. There was no toilet roll holder and the exhaust fan in the bathroom didn't work. One night the lights stopped working and the air con (when it hadn't been disabled by the staff) would switch off in the middle of the night, which meant the room got quite warm. Opening the window wasn't really an option as it was quite noisy outside. With the window closed, the room was nice and quiet though, with all the rooms being well sound proofed. Breakfast each morning was basic but good.

I would recommend it to those wanting to visit London for a day or two but not have to pay through the nose for the privilege of staying in London itself.

Ok hotel. Neighborhood not so great.

50 min from Westminster Tube station. If you plan to stay for vacation, this is really far away. West Ham is almost Zone 4, which means you will spend a lot riding the tube. The neighborhood is not tourist friendly at all. Breakfast is served in the bar (which is open to the public) and it's barely ok. Staff is friendly. No laundry at the hotel. We used a launderette 3 blocks away.

Adequate if willing to overlook shortcomings

7 night stay - Room 112 is on the first level facing the back and was quiet for most of the stay but the Friday night Karaoke at the Pub was loud and an added event (wedding?) at the Ruskin Hall the next Saturday night was much louder and went on well after midnight. Breakfast was adequate but the bathroom could have a been a bit cleaner as there was still some hair on the floors from previous guests and the sink had some brown stains that looked like rust and washed away with the first use. Area around the TV was very, very dusty and one of the nearby electrical sockets was loose. Bathroom cups are small and of flimsy plastic.

The room heats up quickly so I would open the window at times to keep it cooler.

The area is a strong ethnic community and offers plenty of south east asian restaurants and shops for those who enjoy curries. It also feels like a safe area with plenty of families and their children going about their daily affairs.

A great value hotel for visiting Central london

We stayed in London for a week so we needed a value hotel, good transport links, and a car park. Ruskin Hotel had all of these things.

The car park is gated and monitored by CCTV so it felt secure, it is first come first served so you aren't guaranteed a parking spot. There are about 9 parking bays and 2 disabled bays if I remember correctly.

Check-in was smooth, and our room was nice and clean. The Shower was very good, constant hot water with good pressure. We did have problems with our A/C, it was working fine for the first half of the week where we could set it to 'cool', but then the option disappeared and it only had a 'heat' option.

Our room was like a sauna when we arrived back one night, luckily you can open the window fully. When we asked reception about the A/C, they said that they can only set it to either 'Cool' or 'Heat' and most of the residents wanted 'Heat'. Sounds like nonsense to me, we left the window open for the rest of the week but I wasn't happy about this.

A Buffet breakfast was included in the price and was pretty good. Transport to central London was easy, the hotel is located within walking distance between 2 stations so it doesn't take too long to get into London.

The immediate area outside the Ruskin is nothing to shout about, but we felt safe at all times. This was merely a base for our week and we spent most of it sightseeing and visiting friends & family.

Overall, I can't fault this hotel very much, great value for money!

VERY FAR FROM AIRPORTS

IT IS OVER 35 MILES FROM THE AIRPORTS HEATHROW AND GATWICK. WE SPENT OVER A 100 POUNDS EACH WAY BY CAB.IT IS ACCESSIBLE TO THE CITY CENTER DUE TO METRO/BUS/TRAIN, BUT NOT AN EASY FEAT FOR ONE TO LAG LUGGAGE AROUND SO WE HAD TO USE THE CABS TO AND FROM THE AIRPORTS. IT TOOK US OVER AN HOUR EACH WAY.I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR TOURISTS WITH BAGS!

Our second stay at The Ruskin

This was our second stay at the Ruskin, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the Ruskin Arms pub had opened. This now provided a place to eat after our days out in London. The food was very nice and competitively priced. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from East Ham train station. This provides easy access to the centre of London.

A few nights at The Ruskin.....

A few nights away with my 13 year old daughter. Tube station was a 10 minute walk away, the hotel was clean & comfortable with everything working. The pub next door (The Ruskin Arms) served food until 1030pm, with a cracking pub menu for all tastes & pockets. Staff were all very friendly & helpful. Would definitely stay here again if available. Also, The Ruskin has a superb history, as it was the starting place for both The Small Faces and Iron Maiden rock bands. Check it out just for the history alone.

The staff were polite, friendly and helpful and the room clean and comfortable. Bed was fine, very comfortable. We were there to do Ride London cycle event and this seems to be a popular place to stay for that event as the hotel was full of cyclists. I can see why as the owners definitely catered to our needs by letting us take our bikes to the room and laying on breakfast at 5am. All in all a great one night stay with no complaints and I will definitely be back next year if we do the cycle event again.

Very nice and clean hotel. The staff is very friendly. The inclusive breakfast was simple but nice. The only real problem is the neighborhood was not the greatest. And also it's pretty far from everything in the city, about a 45 minute bus ride from the city

This hotel is like a mini-Ibis built on the back of a big old Sports Bar pub. The area's a bit "vibrant" but it feels safe and it's well connected by tube and bus. The rooms are clean, functional, modern and have everything you need from a budget hotel. The bar is big and a tad soul-less but has pool tables as well as TV, entertainment on weekends and a reasonable pub menu. The breakfast buffet is OK, and better than quite a few much more expensive hotels I've used, and they even offer it to non-residents as "all you can eat for 3.50", bargain. It even has parking, but you need to get in early on weekdays. I've used it twice so far and would do so again.

we enjoyed the hotel and the breakfast was great.

shopping and transportation was accessible. We were able to take the underground to the center. The OYSTERCARD is the way to go. We were there at an exciting time,the new princess,elections were over, victory day. the changing of the guards, chinatown.It was fun but expensive. Our dollar sucks in your country. But we got souvenirs and enjoyed the excitement of London.

Lovely Hotel

Stayed here for a few days while visiting London, pleasently suprised at the hotel, the inside is a bit of a maze ( bit more signage would be good ) but once we found the room it was very clean and tidy. Check in and out was quick and easy and the breakfast choice was amazing, more food than we could possibly eat. The Ruskin is in a good location for visiting London, East Ham tube station is about 10 mins walk away but watch out for hawkers on the street trying to sell you stuff. Staff were polite and friendly, nothing was to much trouble. Car parking is very limited, we were lucky to get a space the morning after we arrived, I would seriously consider not bringing a car next time and just using the tube. All in all a very pleasent little hotel, we will definitely book again.

Nice hotel would stay again

Check in was quick and easy, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was exactly what I expected and was clean, tidy and comfortable. The food available in the adjoining bar / restaurant was very good and you got value for your money, although it did get a bit noisy but I did stay at the weekend so it may be quieter in the week. I didn't really explore the area as I was at the ExCel from straight after breakfast to dinner time. I was nervous about staying on my own in London but I felt completely safe at the hotel and the staff were available at all hours. I would definitely stay again and recommend this hotel to others.
