Staff were very helpful and accommodating and bar area was nice. However, the room I booked was called the ‘Executive double room’ which came at a premium, and it certainly did not live up to its name, as it was very shabby and in dire need of a refurb. Curtains hanging off the rail, black mould around the tiny shower tray, threadbare towels with holes, paint peeling off the woodwork, etc. Sound proofing was also non-existent, so could hear every tune my neighbour was whistling. I won’t be staying here again!

Food was nice, there was an issue at breakfast due to no chef and it took a while to sort out dietary requirements with no chef. There was only fruit available for gluten free option until they sorted out the chef, otherwise evening meal was fine. Room was pleasant and shower/bath were lovelly. Beds were comfy however the bed side lamps didn't seem to work. WiFi was available across the whole hotel. Easily accessible off the M4 and close to the activity we took part in so very convenient.

Good place for visiting Bath and surrounding areas

Booked twin bedded room. Allocated room 35. Room had recently been refurbished. Excellent. Despite a wedding being held there it was quiet and restful. Self service cooked breakfast in morning was very good and staff were constantly on hand to top up on anything. Good choice of different foods. Would stay again in room 35 and any other refurbished rooms. Cannot judge any other rooms. Staff were helpful, attentive and friendly. Just off the M4 is an excellent location for visiting Bath via Bath's No. 31 bus Lansdown Park and Ride facility.

This could be a great hotel. The location and affordability make it a good choice. Sadly it's tired and a little grubby.

Very cold room upon arrival. Old hotel, would only recommend if nothing else is available. On hindsight a more modern hotel closer to bath or Bristol would have been a better alternative and in a similar price bracket.

Great hotel, excellent value

We had a great stay at Compass Inn. The room was lovely and well equipped and the bathroom was sparkling clean and looked new.
Rupert kindly assisted us with our heavy bags, all staff were exceptionally helpful.

Not told there was a wedding on and only access from room to bar was through the wedding party reception room. We were told we had to go out the back door walk around the building and into the other door. 45 mile per hr wind and rain at time. Got there and bar was not serviced so had to go into wedding reception bar to het a drink. The log fire in the bar was filling the room with smoke. I reported it and they opened the outside door to vent the room. I pointed out they should put it out. Later went back to the bar for dinner as only room available to eat and the manager was again putting more wood on it. Other people in bar joined in with me and said they had headaches and room full of smoke. Eventually they agreed to let fire burn out but by this time we both felt ill. There was no other room to eat in due to wedding. The young staff were vere good with service but the reception desk staff was unrealistic expecting us to go outside in red weather warning. Not a great experience and very uncomfortable being forced to crash a wedding just to get a drink plus we were very under dressed for that.

The property is very dated and in need of decorating, repair and deep cleaning.
Staff just handed me my card key. I had to ask what room and direction- disinterested staff. Restaurant was cold due to windows that were not closed in the roof of the orangery , where a few of us were forced to dine, as the bar area was full.Damp and leaves on restaurant floor.
The staff member who served us actually shouted‘shut up’ in the middle of talking to her. This was actually directed at another member of staff!
Fire door, next to my room, was broken and wouldn’t shut. Dangerous and also meant wind was blowing through corridor all night- making room very cold. In addition, rainfall overnight had soaked carpet.
Room walls are flimsy and next room’s conversation and snoring was easily audible.
No lighting in car park at rear , making walking and navigating to hotel hazardous.
Lock out at 9pm and had to return to car and drive to pub side. Door to get in there jammed and staff thought my struggle with this amusing.
Booked for 2 nights but left after first- unbearably poor all round.
Final insult was doors to exit were locked and I couldn’t leave until a cleaner was found to unlock main entrance to pub side! Also dangerous in a fire.
Disappointing experience- bordering on farcical. Can’t believe this business is still functioning at the level it is at.

The staff is absolutely wonderful and the sourroundings are beautiful, however the hotel is very dated. We were give a very large family room. The bathroom shower worked with an electrical
Device that made a tractor engine noise, but the shower was warm and nice. The room carpet next to the double bed smelled really bed and there was no thermostat in the room. One could not control the temperature and the heat would go on only in the evening and be stuck at 30 C (86 F!). The mattresses could use replacing. Not really a place we’d go back to if not for the absolutely stellar staff.

Positives were the location near the M4, easy parking, nice outside area, and a nice bar and restaurant. The room was a bit small but functional but there was some noise from adjacent rooms which I think was caused by pumps operating the water and showers. Overall, however, our stay was good value for money.

On balance, I would have given this two and a half stars.
Cleanliness was poor, the corridors were dirty and needed a good vacuuming. The room had a cup with a used tea bag and there was a minimal tea tray, The electricity went on and off all night and in the morning !
The breakfast was ok- all cheaper ingredients. The room was quite and we slept well. Need a refurbishment..Not sure whether we would return.

Good location and overall staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is freshly cooked for each guest however it finished at 9am weekdays which was for us a bit early.
We had an executive room booked for 2 nights and on arrival after 7pm we had no hot water in the bathroom, which after a long journey was disappointing to say the least. Reception staff had to reset boiler (apparently known problem) and we waited almost 2 hours to get hot water and the water pressure from the taps was poor as well. No toilettries in bathroom which for an execetive room was not good.
Generally functional hotel but could certainly do with a face lift.

Convenient and pleasant location for us traveling from Bath to Birmingham. Staff were very friendly and helpful. A really sweet and lovely touch was the children’s chocolate Easter egg in our room! The room did look a bit dated, particularly the bathroom. The bathroom could also have been a little cleaner. It felt as if the bathroom and room probably hadn’t been used for a while and since the last time it was cleaned it had gotten a bit dusty.

A good night's sleep

We used the hotel as an overnight stop after a 125 mile trip to Wales. We found staff friendly and helpful. The evening meal was excellent but the full English breakfast was sadly overcooked. The room was adequate and clean and tidy.
Two drinking glasses in the room would have been useful and next time we will ask for a walk in shower. Stepping in and out of a bath to shower gets precarious as you get older but grab rails would help!

Had an excellent day . From Amy who I spoke to prior to our arrival and to the reception staff they could not do enough to ensure they met our requirements .
One of the rooms we had had been recently refurbished and it was lovely . The other room had yet to be refurbished but was still perfectly adequate .
We decided to eat in the restaurant and the food was outstanding .
Would definitely recommend and cannot wait to return

It took so long to get service that the food went cold altogether. Just one person trying to serve . Really poor and priced too high for the quality and service . Great value, friendly staff

Lovely clean room which was bigger than expected, great shower with very clean bathroom. Only fault was being next to a fire door, got woken up early with the workers going back and forth, could do with getting a slow automatic door closing thing. Breakfast was good, I had salmon and poached eggs on toast and husband had full English. All staff were very friendly and helpful, will use again if need to stay in that area again.

Wonderful place to stay

I really enjoyed my stay. All staff were helpfull, food and service great. Nice bar area, very comforting with real fires. Room was nice, great shower, comfortable bed and strong WiFi signal. Hotel was clean with friendly staff. It is tired in places but undergoing work in the middle section of the hotel with more to follow we were told. Evening meals were lovely, breakfast had to be pre ordered with time stated. Not a problem for us, but a bigger selction of continental would be nice ie. Fruit and yogurts.

location is lovely,
the Hotel and accommodation is dated and tired.
Room,
Bed hard and not comfy with thin pillows, I may of had better night on thee floor.
Bathroom, well...I didn't want to use it for washing.
Light over desk, flickers, not helpful when staying for business.
Cleanliness is lacking in all formats, I feel that furniture Polish is the only item in their bucket....
all items have been removed for COVID...not sure why....I stay in many Hotels weekly and the Level others reach way exerts this and all facilities are available.

The hotel is quite old and the rooms need desperately a refurbishment. We found the room bathroom dirty, especially considering that you would expect extra cleaning during a pandemic. The bath had several body hairs inside. One of the bathroom corners was home for a spider. Breakfast was reduced because of COVID19 (which is understandable) hovewer when we booked and paid for breakfast we were not advised about this. The overall experience was disappointing. This is definitely the worst best western I ever been in. The staff was friendly hovewer they looked understaffed expecially at breakfast, I couldn't manage to get a second cup of coffee as the only waiter was far too busy.

Great hotel, terrible beds

The staff were friendly and helpful. The bed in room 6 was terrible, too low and the mattress was shot. It sagged in the middle. The sign on the doir said it was for disabled peole, the bed was so low they would never get up from it, and the bed was not suitable to sleep in. The room wasnt that clean. The food was fabulous, beautifully presented and tasted fantastic.

Could be special with an update.

Very tired looking hotel.the room was ok but needs modernising.the bar area could do with a total makeover to bring a bit of a more comfortable feel to the area.
Was put off eating there by chefs walking around in dirty uniforms and loitering around outside in the same uniforms.there aroundplenty of decent eateries around the area so would suggest researching those first.
All in all quite a disappointing stay which could have been a lot better if a bit of money was spent on the place.
