Very nice apartment

Very nice apartment, lots of space and nicely appointed. Location good for golf courses in the area. Nice and quiet at night and with nice bars and restaurants nearby. The local beach is a bit messy with a hotel that looks like it has been unused for a while.

The accommodation is in a beautiful setting. On arrival we were a bit concerned about it being located next to dual carriageway. The area on the other side is lovely too. Staff were great. Receptionist maybe needed back up as she seemed harassed. Night porter excellent. Located between Estepona and Marbella. Bus stop right outside and buses mostly reliable.

Nice resort but lacking some basics

Nice resort but the rooms and services are lacking some basics. Rooms are old and need an upgrade. Faulty kettle, door knobs falling off. Was given one small 20ml shower gel and when asking for more at reception, I was told they only provide the one bottle on arrival. Room isn’t cleaned. Bar and restaurant doesn’t open until noon so there is nowhere to have a coffee or breakfast.

What a stunning place. The grounds were perfectly manicured throughout, beautiful flora. Pool areas all clean.
Property perfect with our own yard.
Close to the beach, in fact properties at the rear of the resort were practically on the beach.
Staff all very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Any issues were promptly delt with.
I cant fault the resort at all.

This was the best resort we have ever stayed at. As soon as we walked in to our 1 bedroom suite we felt at home. It had all the necessities we required for our 5 day stay. I would recommend to any couple looking for a quiet beach resort.

Greay stay with children. Our apartment was right above the shop so it was a good location, the tennis court's and gym and pool were within minutes walk. Apartment was clean and no flies to be seen anywhere! 5 mins walk down to the beach too.

Fabulous family vacation

We stayed 2 weeks at McDonald Villacana resort in July 2022. The resort is conveniently located in Costa de Sol between Marbella and Estepona. The resort is extremly beautiful near the beach. It includes all needed amenities (pools, bar, restaurants, convenience store, gym...). We occupied 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms unit built in Andalusian style with beautiful terrace. The unit is very up-to-date and includes all needed amenities. Add to that, beautiful weather and great food. Highly recommend

We come back to Villacana year after year. The flowers are stunning, the properties are perfect and not one tiny spec of dust in the place.
The beach is fab, a handfull of places to eat on site, great food. location is close to shops, bus route, hospital and more.

Great place to spend a few days. Apartment was spacious and had everything we required for a few nights stay. Reception staff were very welcoming and pleasant. Beach was within walking distance. Great facilities locally but I would recommended you have a car so you can get around and explore more easily.

Nice hotel but there are a handful of awful rooms

I had a marvellous break once they moved me to a decent room. The hotel rooms in the same annex as reception are dated and noisy (next to the main road). The main hotel complex had beautifully appointed and quiet rooms. Shame I had an awful first couple of nights though.

The buildings and accommodation are very well kept. Staff are friendly and everyone seems to know each other. Very family friendly and safe. The restaurants in and around the area are good. Gregarios, the pool bar/restaurant and the beach restaurant were all excellent. The 90 miles pub/restaurant had lovely food but the service was VERY slow. You can put towels down around 8.30am to get a good position by the pool in the middle but pay for sun beds at the beach pool.
Worth a trip to Torrellominos water park, had a good day there, although a bit pricey. We had a roof terrace in a 2 bed apartment which was difficult to access if you had young children but ok for teenagers.

OK but not good enough

The resort was not easy to find however once there parking was ample and check in was easy.
There are a number of charming period apartments on site but we had one above reception which was bland, without a balcony, by the main busy A7 road and lacking basic equipment like a bin!
The site is small with little choice in restaurants (unlike sister Dona Lola - which is fab). The restaurant by the pool is underused and the staff overcharged us one night, by 20E. There is only one other restaurant close by which wasn't great.
The pool is small but at least you're allowed to use floats in it. The onsite clubs are run well and varied, considering the lack of amenities and local facilities.
The whole area seems a little run-down compared to other parts of the Costa, so a car is essential.
Dona Lola for us next year!

Top selfcatering resort

Our favourite self catering resort in the area. Clean, spacious rooms and very friendly staff. We were upgraded to a bigger apartment which made the stay all the more enjoyable. Check in and check out handled very well. Ample and secure parking on site. The grounds are immaculately kept.

Good hotel. Be careful about electricity costs.

Try to get rooms closer to pool rather than by reception and the main road.
Nice feel and pool safe for kids. Close to beach and good local restaurant (the butcher).
Would prefer this to the expensive Iberostar down the beach (& we are Iberostar club members).
We were charged £50ish for 6 days electricity rather than £25 as advertised by Expedia. Have been chasing MacDonalds for a refund since August...Not good enough service.

Clean hotel close to the beach.

Arrival experience wasn't great as there were two children lady using the main t.v in the reception waiting area to play on their playstation. The children were screaming at each other and the poor Spanish lady on Reception couldn't communicate. The children's mother was actually in charge of the Reception and couldn't get them to be quiet and when she did try it made no effect. This resulted in us having to return the following day to receive our instructions.- not a good first impression !!
Wonderful holiday, excellent resort with great facilities and close to amenities. Staff were lovelyand the complex was always tidy and clean.
The only one criticism of the hotel apartment was that the walls are far too thin. You can hear everything , from tables moving, drawers opening, even someone on the toilet. this sadly results in lack of sleep which is not what a holiday is for.

Had a great time at the Macdonald Villacana club, we were in apartment 234 which is one bed with a pull out sofa bed; this worked well for us as our kids (7,4) loved going on the sofa bed where they could watch tv whilst in bed (a real treat as no to in their bedrooms at home).
Apartment spacious and everything which you'll need.
We enjoyed going to the smaller of the two pools as this seemed to be less crowded and superior sun beds/umbrellas.
The property is beautifully maintained and my only complaint could be I couldn't find the outside bins but that's testament to how well the property is set up
Will definitely be checking availability for next year.

Great family place to stay

Next to the beach with a large pool and lots of greenery to sunbathe on.
Great restaurants to eat out in at night and a local supermarket for all your needs.
Very clean rooms and landscaped gardens.

Only downside is you have to pay for sunbeds every day which wasn't expected and we had to pay for Air con and was told it would be by the meter reading when actually it was just 5 euros a day and if we had known that we would have used more electricity rather than being careful.

Peaceful family holiday in Villacana

We were really impressed with the hotel and our appartment/villa was very well-positioned close to the beach. The beach is large and not too busy, the area overall is very nice and not over-built,very peaceful for a family holiday. We had a car and found it useful to travel in the area. We recommend a visit to Ronda,Casares,Marbella of course and Puerto Banus. The only one criticism we have about the hotel is the extra charge for electricity to be paid on departure.

So much more than 3 star..

We booked this resort as a last minute fix for our summer holiday following our original accommodation being cancelled only one week before we were booked to fly to Malaga.

We were so glad!!! the location was perfect and resort and accommodation were second to none. Our 2 bedroom duplex was located with direct access onto the beach and with one of the 4 pools right outside our patio area which was ideal for our 3 children. With the exception of one of the on site restaurants the food and the service was superb and we felt perfectly safe letting the children walk themselves to the main pool area for ice creams and pool tables etc.

The accommodation was cleaned, beds made and towels changed 3 times during our 13 night stay, there was wifi available at an extra cost but with 3 teenagers this is essential nowadays. We were offered an extension on our last day as we flew out in the evening which also made a huge difference.

I really do have nothing negative to say about our stay and would not hesitate to recommend to anyone I know who wishes to stay in the San Pedro/Marbella area.

Macdonald Villicana was just OK

Macdonald Villicana has a friendly laid back feel to it and the staff are very willing to assist where they can. The kids club is good with plenty of activities for teenagers with the pool volleyball being very popular and fun to watch. Whilst sun bed numbers appeared to be lower than you might expect we were always able to find something so it's deceiving. The room however was very disappointing as we felt detached from the facilities being only 1 of 3 rooms at the reception building a fair distance from restaurant and pools and the decor was very outdated. We had a separate balcony up a flight of stairs detached from the room which was no use for us as a balcony is useful for quick in and out and didn't want to have to trail kids with us each time so wasn't used and in addition the traffic noise levels ruined any peace you would expect. The furniture required moving around each night time to get the bed in the living area down. We requested a room change but were told there were no other rooms. The rest of the accommodation appeared to be more fit for purpose in terms of location and helping you to be more a part of the village. It was a decent hotel if you were fortunate to avoid a reception based room and the self catering room facilities were of a very good standard with condements, washing up liquid, dishwasher tabs etc.

Overall, a very nice resort, but as a solo traveler, I would say it was definitely more appropriate to a family. Lots of people there with young kids, and much farther out of Marbella city center than I thought it would be. That said, nice beach and very relaxing environs.

Nicely laid out hotel with attractive gardens. We had an issue with our booking via Expedia which still hasn't been resolved (Expedia's fault not the hotel) which has led to us being double charged. WIthout the double charge it would be an excellent value for money hotel! Plenty of eating options within 20 minutes walking distance. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Our special request of ground floor was not provided so the room was not suitable for our friend with disabilities. The room was on the 2nd floor and there was no elevator. I was told the shower would only have a small step to get into the shower. The shower was in a bathtub which would require a step of over 12 inches which would not be possible for our friend. We were unable to stay at the unit for which we had prepaid.

I stay at Villacana regularly and am rarely disappointed. Reception staff is friendly and efficient and the kitchen is well stocked with all you need for cooking in the apartment. The two bedroom apartments are huge.Tennis court is in good shape and cheap to book and the two outdoor pools are clean and well kept.

Very well furnished apartment, well thought of. From the salt and pepper to the beach parasols and the dishwasher powder.
Clean, tidy, beautifully decorated rooms.
Grounds well looked after, heated swimming pool, good coffee shop and mature gardens.
Six minutes drive from puerto Banues.

Lovely Holiday

The Villicana Club complex is very well maintained and very clean. The apartments are spacious and well equipped. We had a 1 bedroom ground floor apartment with a courtyard garden with a BBQ.
On site there are 2 outdoor pools and 1 indoor, a Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, gym, tennis court and snooker and pool tables.
The complex is a 5-10 minute easy walk to the beach.
The location is good for getting around the Costa Del Sol, it is situated on the A7 road. I would recommend a hire car although there is a bus stop outside the complex with buses going to Estepona and Puerto Banus etc.

lovely two bedroom apartment,spotlessly clean, two nice pools , we ate in the resort restaurant once and it was very good, within walking distance to beach with a few nice beach bars, we hired a car so we could go out and about but you wouldn't really need one if you were happy to stay close by, lovely roof top terrace with both sea and mountain views, would definitely recommend , especially fresh bread in shop just next to resort !!

Beautiful gardens, close to the beach...

The gardens really were the best part of the complex, well maintained and lovely to look at. You could use both the north complex and south complex swimming pools but they charge for sun beds in the south. Usually plenty of free sun beds to use by our pool though.

We had a 2 bed ground floor apartment which was spacious and we were given basic supplies like dishwasher tablets.... The rooms were a bit dark in the daytime but we didn't spend a lot of time in them.... You definitely need a car at this resort - it's about 50 mins from the airport and we enjoyed going to all the surrounding towns and resorts...

Great Spanish supermarkets nearby for fresh produce so we had lovely BBQs in our courtyard garden..

The resort also charges for electricity use - I've never experienced this before in a hotel or apartment complex. We were charged about £50 for 2 weeks.

The resort restaurants were good....the usual chips and snacks for lunchtime but the Barraka beach restaurant was really good for evening meals....

Plenty of activities for kids - the leader was called Andy who was very patient and kind to all the kids. Football matches, beach safaris, pizza making, play stations... They were never bored.

Overall satisfied with hotel. Rooms could be upgraded a bit, stayed in 144, visited friends in 141 where the interior were moderniced. Not great view from apartment, waistground. Found the apartment quite dark, small windows.
It was not mentioned that the 2 bed apartment had stairs. If we had known this we would not booked as have 3 year olds and it was a lot of supervision involved. In general too many stairs in resort. Fine for adults, but not with young children.
Restaurant at Villicana North had very good food and super friendly staff, can highly recommend. Would have preferred to have eaten in the restaurant though (closed for the season) and not in a markee.
The flies were very annoying around the pool area.
Liked the fact that there were several restaurants to choose from (south) and the beach was nice - although very stony so difficult to get in and out

Great apartment.It was very expensive for 1 person

I enjoyed the itinery and wanted more. Eg the tennis was cancelled at the last minute.
So to was a trip to Mijas.
More information could be given on the bus times e.g the last bus from Estepona was
9.30pm. I was waiting for a bus at 9.45pm.
More information about the eating places & markets etc.

A Good Place to Stay

We travel to Spain fairly frequently to visit family & becuase our usual accomodation was already booked we stayed here as an alternative. The weather wasn't great so the indoor pool was a real bonus, it wasn't the biggest but it was nice & clean. The sauna & steam rooms were lovely & there was also an outdoor 'heated' jacuzzi. The appartment was spotless & well stocked. The furniture was all in good condition & appliences all worked. For more than two people I would reccomend going for a two bedroom app. as the one bed was quite small. A couple of other negative points to note; It was in a slightly different place to what the map suggested. Look out for the sign which is easly vissible from the main road & try to arrive before midnight as the security gaurd didn't speak English. There's also an additional charge for electricity usage, we paid €15 after a 3 night stay. On the whole though, it's a lovely place to stay & we'll be going back at some point.

The apartmentwas lovely and reception staff helfpful but that's where it ends. Its impossible to find if you don't know the area. No free wifi. - charge of 20. Euro a week although online it doesn't state that wifi is not free. Another thing that wasn't highlighted when I booked was that you would be charged for electricity for your stay. We were rarely in the apartment yet still got charged ridiculous amount. The resort is a timeshare placee another thing I was unaware of - i had the sales office knocking on my door at half 9 in the morning asking if they could tell me about their offers - when I said I was just about to take my daughteer to build sandcastles - the woman seemed annoyeed and pushed for me to commit to a time to see her. i said that i was wnting to go to the beach and she left. next morning she called me on the apartment phone - not what you want on a family hol. i will not be staying there again.

Not all its cracked up to be!

After booking 15 days to stay here through Expedia we were informed that we would have to move rooms after 7 days ! We were not informed of this prior to check in.
There are insufficient free sun lounges so the only choice is to pay 5 euros per person for a lounger around the larger pool or beach.
Reception staff come across as abrupt and rude.
We paid for Internet in our room but this was down for a total of 2.5 days and no refund was offered.
You have to pay for any electricity used in yr room, our bill was 226 euros for electricity alone, absolutely shocking as we did not have air conditioning on other than first thing in the morning whilst having breakfast.
The terraces in your room offered are very small.
The gymnasium has 2 treadmills and 2 bikes, hardly state of the art !!!
The restaurants on site were very good and affordable. Our favourite was barraka serving fresh fish and beautiful salads however the staff are grumpy at times, this did not put us off as the food was superb .
