My only gripe is that I could not open the hand soap in the little packets, would be better if the hand soap was in a dispenser

The most important part was the location, the room was bit small but it had every things included a small fridge which I never used but it was nice to have it, breakfast availability would have to be nice but I understand it’s a small hostel but it was great the fact that You have a coffee machine full of hot beverages (Love that), I would improve the size of your lavatory and a nicer space for your toiletries ! In general I was happy with my choice !

Room was clean and pleasant, but one night soap and shampoo were not replaced. External door to the property had a broken lock on the third day, so we had to call for entry, which was difficult. These were minor concerns. Overall, the property was nice and the staff friendly.

The room smelled like mold and the toilet had the paper across to show it was cleaned but when the lid was lifted there was urine and toilet paper in the toilet so obviously not cleaned. I told the staff I could not stay there with mold and they refused to give me a refund for 3 of the 5 nights. I have never had to leave a place before and angry they won’t provide a refund.

La señora que me recibió dejó que pudiera guardar mi equipaje antes del check in pues llegué temprano y tuvo mi cuarto listo súper rápido. Súper amable. Muchísimas gracias. Necesitaba un lugar donde dormir una noche de escala en la ciudad sin demasiado lujo y con aire acondicionado para combatir los 40 grados de Madrid y el hotel fue muy conveniente en cuanto relación precio/calidad. La habitación era pequeña y también el baño pero suficiente para un viajero solo. Saludos.

Excellent location, two blocks from Gran Vía. Good food on this small street, not expensive. Important to us: there is an elevator! Building is safe, closed for the night. Lots of small, useful stores right next to the building, including grocery stores. Very convenient.
Uber from there to the Golden Triangle museums is just about 10 Euros.
Staff very nice. They even gave me a card to use in the subway, I just needed to add some money to it. Gave it back for future costumers.

Nuestra estadia fue se puede decir buena pero con algunos problemas, el elevados carias veces estaba fuera de servicio y segundo en las noches se escuchaba mucho ruido de personas de otros pisos y no se podia dormir la ubicacion es muy buena también el servicio ,pero lo único era eso mucho ruido en las noches.

Great Location with Safety Concerns

The hotel is located near Gran Via and both metro & commuter train stations, so there were a lot of great dining and shopping options available. The private suite was small with a small refrigerator, but no microwave. Also, the bathroom sink was way too small and inconvenient to use. The owner and staff were very friendly.

There's one incident worth mentioning. At the check-in, the owner told us to just leave our keys on the reception window if we're checking out before 0900, which we did. However, when we went down stairs, the main door of building was locked from the inside and you needed the key to open that door to get out of the building. This could've been a dangerous situation if there was a fire in the building and people are trapped because they couldn't get out of the building.

The property was in a good location within Madrid, but the street was somewhat rundown. The hotel was the same. It just did not meet my standards. It was old and tattered. We ended up departing after one night and took another hotel. You know that you in the wrong place when the hotel supplies ear plugs on the night stand.

Good budget friendly place

If you want a place to sleep and are planing on being on the city a lot and not in the room then this is the place. It is small but works if you are on a budget. The only complain is the the street is loud up until 3-4am so it is a little difficult to get rest. They provide earplugs to help and of course this is not their fault, it’s just the neighborhood. We enjoyed our stay and it helped us keep the budget available for other activities.

Fui de viaje con mi pareja, volamos por horas y nos dejaron en la calle luego de haber reservado con meses de anticipación. Nos cancelaron la habitación que habíamos reservado por cuatro días e indicaron que se la dieron a otra persona, alegando que si no le avisamos la hora de llegada ellos tenían el derecho a cancelar la reserva. Eso no le decía en ningún lado. Ya la habitación estaba paga en su totalidad, también perdimos el dinero. No recomiendo hagan reserva en este lugar. No caigan en este truco, además el lugar no es en la mejor zona. Y el trato de la Sra. que estaba en la
Oficina y nos recibió no era el
Mejor, ni le importó dejarnos en la calle, ya que en esos días había partido de fútbol y todos los hoteles estaban llenos.

Great location for a “no frills” stay

Really centrally located with Gran Via just steps away. The room was a great size and was also very clean with a hair dryer, towels, ear plugs, and water provided. Air conditioner in the room was excellent. Our room had a mini fridge, which was nice. The bathroom in our room was tiny and difficult for even one person to move around in. It was also VERY dark in the bathroom and we had to use the flashlight on our cell phone to add lighting. While all the towels provided were super clean, they definitely felt like they had been washed one too many times and were very rough. We had a room that overlooked Calle Hortaleza and it gets very loud at night. We slept with ear plugs, which helped, but the noise goes all through the night. The wifi in our room was very spotty, too. There are 5 different wifi networks to choose from for the hostal but our room got only 2 of them and even those 2 would go in and out. It’s a perfect “no frills” place if all you’re looking to do is shower & sleep in your room. Despite some room for improvement, I would definitely recommend staying here due to the amazing location & cleanliness of everything.

Great location, especially for those wishing access to the heart of Madrid (right between the Prado & Puerta del Sol) or the Chueca zone. Located near tons of cafes and shops.

One very frustrating thing for me was the regular failure of the internet/WiFi. Two of the three days I stayed there I had no internet service. Since I had been counting on the service, this made things very awkward for me.

Additionally, and not the fault of the owner./manager per se, the room next to me was packed with extremely loud and disruptive clients. They had their television blaring full blast for hours on end, had verbal spats and laughing competitions which continued until 1:30 am. At that point I retaliated by blasting Mozart on my laptop (I had an end corner, so it should not have disturbed any but them). Finally, with the shots fired, they turned off their noise and I was able to get some sleep. The problem was that I had no one to call and was not about to interrupt a full room of people myself to tell them to be quiet at 1 am.

Elevator was hit and miss.

The area later at night is very seedy for last 100 meter walk off Main rd.

Clean safe, budget option in a prime location

Hostal Chelo is a good budget option if you are looking for a clean, safe room steps from the Gran Via and central attractions. Maria and her team are gracious hosts and keep the rooms neat and clean. Wifi was free and fast

I will echo what other reviewers have said. The rooms and hallways are very compact, so there isn't much space for luggage, etc. The bathrooms are compact as well, and require some agility to get in and out of the tub. There is an elevator, but you still need to walk up or down a half flight of steps. Overall, I was satisfied with my stay. The biggest issues I had with the Chelo are not necessarily completely within the control of the Hostal. The walls are paper-thin between rooms, so you can hear every loud conversation your neighbors are having. Also, pretty common in older, multi-story, buildings, sewer gas would occasionally create a bad smell from the bathrooms, making it pretty necessary to keep the windows open .

If location and budget are your top concerns, the Chelo is a good option if you are willing to accept the trade-offs.

Basic lodging at bargain price in a fab locale

Two of us shared one of the private rooms with a small wc/shower. The hostel is located less than 400 meters from the Chueco metro station, and almost as close to the Sol station. It is a 25 minute walk to the Prado in one direction and the Palacio Real in another direction. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The walls are very thin, so bring earplugs.

The hostal is on third floor, there is an elevator that leaves you at a 2 1/2 floor (?) and you have about 12 steps walk upstairs. The building is old and the place feels rundown though the room is small but adequate. Lots of street noise.

I liked the fact that it was very central. Minutes away walking from Puerta del Sol plaza, where day and night it is bustling with young people and tourists, especially after 10:00 PM. The staff, all family members, were nice and welcoming, and very helpful. Overall, I had a comfortable stay.

Noisy and smelly

We asked for a double room and was only given a twin room. The room itself was basic but the toliet smelt. Leaving the toilet door closed only intensifies the smell and leaving the door open meant the room smelt. The only option was to air the room and make it really cold, or get a scented candel.

The other thing was the hotel was noisy with guest making lots of noise and the clanging around. There is no carpeting to absorb noise so beware. On top of this the hostel is also noisy in the day with the staff being loud and making loads of noise.

From the moment we walked in to the moment we left everything was wonderful! The staff was so kind and got me a hair dryer and made sure we knew where everything was. Rooms were small but that is to be expected in a hostal! Overall I would stay here again 15 min walk to the Prado, 10 min walk to the plaza. Everything was amazing!

Excellent value for money. Has all the basics and does them well - comfortable bed, good shower, how water, free wifi and very clean including bedding (which is where I normally find cleanliness a bit of a let down in other budget hotels with the odd stain, tired pillows etc but none of that at C H Chelo). It is nothing fancy but, as a lone female traveller I felt safe, comfortable and had everything I needed.

The only thing to mention to other potential customers is that the bathroom is small and can be a bit tight at times.

There are some lovely cafes in the area to get breakfast and it's very easy to walk to all the sights in Madrid. I would happily stay there again.
