Probably not a 5 star

The experience was mediocre right from the start when the pick up wasn’t on time, then the room allotted had to be changed twice as the first room allotted was supposed to have some known pipe issues, the second room allotted was already occupied!
When room service was ordered, the used soup bowl wasn’t removed for two days! Room service cleaning was requested but didn’t happen till the evening where the staff had to be reminded.

Service was amazing! Stayed in one of the rooms in the new villa. Even though it’s new, there’s some signs of wear and tear. I’d recommend staying here if you don’t mind the extra distance from the centre of Siem Reap!

Unsatisfying and not recommended

It found that the bed sheet and quilt cover didn’t change at all. The floor is so dirty as I found dead inserts on the floor. I have requested late check out when I checked in and it has confirmed. On my last day, I got disturbed from the door knock twice by the staff to check my checking out time which is so annoying and I can’t rest well. I was out for sunrise and it disturbed me to rest.

Beautiful picturesque hotel

The hotel and rooms were beautiful, we loved the villas, they were a perfect look and style for us. The service was very good, friendly and helpful. Overall the food was very good, huge breakfast buffet. The kids enjoyed the relaxing time in the pool which was beautiful. This stay was at the end of our trip and as far as hotels go couldn't have asked for much more.

You can see that it was a grand, luxurious hotel originally. There were some furnishing choices that reveal it's age. Overall, the villa was spacious, comfortable, well maintained and elegant. The breakfast buffet was spectacular. Staff was friendly and helpful. I would come back here. Despite it being the off season, everything was still well tended. The hotel is about 15 min away from the real action of downtown. Pro was the quiet, peaceful and the lovely tropical setting. Con was the constant need for transport. We befriended Tuk Tuk Brothers driver, Mr. Long, whom we contracted with for our entire stay. He was incredibly polite, helpful, drove cautiously and acommodating.

It is a spacious property with local feel though it also has a modern building being part of the resort which makes it looks like a confused business.

The staff are nice but level of service is not standard. It is sold as 5 stars hotel but I did not feel like 5 stars standard.

The room is nice and spacious but outdated.

The hotel is a distant to town. The first time I ordered my transport to town after told there is no free shuttle though it was only 6pm. The next door I was offered a free shuttle to town but only one way and the shuttle service ran till 2pm. I certainly could not see this is a five star hotel service.

The breakfast has great selection next to large swimming pool but the atmosphere is dark and the food presentation is again more equal to 4 stars hotel.

If you don't mind a \"5 stars\" hotel with a budget value and feel, then this is a good place to be.

PROS
I arranged for transportation from/to the airport with the hotel prior to my arrival and that was convenient. During checking in, I was given a complimentary beverage that was refreshing. I was also given a tour of the hotel's varying spaces by a front desk staff about breakfast areas, the spa, pool areas, and other services that I may need during my stay (room service, request for rides, etc). My room was nice and clean (although some furniture had stains) and I felt comfortable during my stay. There were unique touches like orchid flowers on my towels and pillows, extra toothbrushes, razor, cotton buds, comb, shower cap, and shampoo + conditioner + body wash. I was also given complimentary bottled water every day. The breakfast buffet was good - combination of Cambodian and Western options, was healthy, and plentiful. There were two areas for breakfast dining (open air restaurant near the pool and inside the hotel) and two dining areas for lunch and dinner (open air restaurant and pool bar). Checking in and checking out was quick and fine.

CONS
The staff overall was kind and lovely, although I felt that some (at the pool bar) were a bit unprofessional - talking loudly amongst themselves, on their cellphones. Near my villa there was trash - empty water bottles, spray can, wrappers, etc.

Excellent Service!

What stood out at this hotel was the warm and genuine hospitality of the staff, not the physical property itself. The staff we came into contact with, from the reception to the bell boys, were always smiling, and showed willingness to help. We did not get a sense that they were expecting monetary returns, on the contrary, they were genuine and sincere in wanting to make our stay comfortable.

And here one staff member really stood out viz., Mr Ratha the asst guest relations manager. They received us during check in and with great efficiency and speed got the room we booked ready, although we were early. He gave us a buggy tour of the ground, and explained with all enthusiasm the facilities and room amenities. There were some glitches during our stay and he was very helpful and got the problems solved. The hotel management should be very proud to have Mr Ratha on the staff team.

The \"villa\" room we booked was one with a terrace facing the swimming pool. The room was already showing signs of wear and tear. It was quite big with a day sofabed and a fairly big bathroom. The problem with the bathroom was the bathtub glass screen not effective at all. Water from the shower were spilling onto the general area during the shower. Flooding would not be an overstatement after a shower.

The hotel restaurant near the pool had a very good range of food during breakfast, that's a plus point.

Overall, the excellent service saved the day!

Requested a wake up call to see the sunrise over Angkor Wat and didn’t get it. Also didn’t receive ordered breakfast pack. When ordering room service the person could not understand what was on the menu. I received a different meal twice. The tour operator told me there were no tours for that afternoon. When I looked at the brochures and found one he didn’t really care. I booked it myself. The breakfast staff were excellent. The hotel is stunning and relaxing. When I asked why no one spoke English they told me it was because they mainly have Chinese guests now. This was my second stay at this hotel. First time a view years ago the service was excellent.

Great place, but basically no fitness center

If you don't go to the fitness center, it's a very nice place to stay. Nice, clean, and spacious villas. Great pool and pool bar. Friendly staff. However, the fitness center is useless. Treadmills don't work at all. The nautilus machine cables aren't connected. The fitness area is very hot, humid, and smells bad.

Amazing Experience!

From the moment I step into the hotel the service was impeccable. The staff immediately approached me and took care of me. They made sure my check-in experience was fast and pleasant and it was. On the way to my village the showed me the hotel installations and explained to me all the services they provided. I scheduled some spa services and for doing so it was very easy. The spa service was also remarkable. Everywhere I went the staff was very helpful and nice to me, making sure i got everything I need for my stay.
Room services was also good, food is good quality and they delivered \"on time\" which means the waiting time was not long.
The breakfast service was amazing! lots of options and they have everything I wanted, starting from a delicious coffee and also a great omelette service.
There is nothing bad I can say about my stay at the Resort. I highly recommend it. I can guarantee your experience if you stay with them will me unforgettable.

Everything went beyond our expectations!

I would recommend this hotel to friends and family. Value for money and time spent. The staff was the number one thing making this hotel a place to stay. Bone, concierge staff, would be the one that we call \"The smile of Sokhalay\". We will definitely choose this hotel for our future trip in Siem Riep.

This hotel was apparently 5 years old but was run down and unkempt , the wooden floor in our room was was rotting and taped up in at least 10 places it smelt , really the only thing nice I can say about this hotel is the pool was nice and big and the drink and food service around the pool was very good by the nice staff at the pool , otherwise the hotel was a huge let down and very expensive for a third world country , everything was in US dollars in cambodia, and very expensive .

Good but Beware of management tricks

Very good hotel and very nice stay overall. However, ONE BIG NEGATIVE point: upon arrival, we have been told there was simply NO VILLA ROOM for us, although they acknowledged our booking. So called some internal booking issues. They even tried to send us to another hotel (lower grade) under same owner ... We had to show determination and refuse to bulge until 'miraculously', our 2 villa rooms could be freed and allocated to us. This kind of game should not happen at that level of hotel ...

The most terrible hotel

I reserved this hotel for 5 days in pool view villa. But I only stayed 3 days because I didn't want to stay anymore. I threw my money and time away.
1. Fabrics in a room was not clean especially sofa, cushions with spots.
2. Wifi in a room was not stable. I could use wifi only the last day after I complained 5 times more.
3. Massage in hotel was irregular. They didn't give any gown to cover my body. Furthermore, massage skill was terrible. It turned red speck on skin after massaging although we ordered tender touching. They just scrabbed not a technical one.
4. The front guys tried to deceive whenever I asked some information. I guessed it's cause of commision fee. The price is not fixed. They asked more money not the same price as they said at first.

After booking and paying for five nights for our hotel (two rooms) two months prior, we arrived only to find that they had no rooms for us. We were told that they had overbooked by inexperienced staff. I got onto Expedia immediately and your site said that their were five rooms available at the standard of rooms we had booked. The manager told us that this was a mistake. He told us that we had to go to find other accommodation for one night. We were then driven around for two hours trying to find suitable accommodation. During this time we were told we need to find accommodation for two nights. After complaining severely we were then told it was for one night only. The next day my wife and walked to Sokhalay and inspected two rooms that were adjacent to each other. They were excellent and we decided they were for us. We were driven back to our overnight accommodation to pick up our friends. When we arrived back to Sokhalay we were taken to different rooms nowhere near each other as the rooms we where shown had been given to another patron who had just walked into the hotel and booked. We decided then and there that we couldn't stay there. We asked to see the GM. We were told that he wasn't on the property and that these rooms were the only ones available. The GM magically appeared. He thought the situation was very funny. At this this point we decided Sokhalay wasn't for us and wanted a refund. We ended up staying another hotel. How could this happen???????????????

Simply marvellous hotel and staff

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Sokhalay, special mention to Pheng who was very helpful and a great host. The hotel facilities, room, restaurant and bar were simply wonderful. Very nice to sit around the pool at night and have a drink or dip!
I loved the place so much I have recommended friends stay and I will go back to stay at this resort!

I really enjoyed staying here, the staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. We were upgraded to a pool view room. The room was comfortable however the balcony lazy boys were wooden with no cushions supplied. The food was nice and the breakfast was diverse, catering for everyone. The major down side for me was the internet connection. They say free wifi however it never really worked even when I went down to the lobby.

This is a beautiful hotel. The gardens and ponds are lovely. Poolside bar was fun. Food was good. Main restaurant is also lovely. Service is extraordinary. On day 1 the server guessed that we would appreciate espresso coffee and served it to us every morning thereafter. The manager came by to check and ensure that we were satisfied. Great selection in the breakfast buffet. Room was lovely and very comfortable. This place was divine after a long day of walking the many magnificent temples in the area. We stayed an extra day just to relax at the hotel!

This resort it is a good value for the money. May is the low season, and I was the only one in their beautiful swimming pool one day. It it a little far from downtown, so you need to pay for a tuk tuk. The staff is courteous.

From the moment i arrived and was picked up and with the very happy and friendly staff i could not fault it..I was up graded after 2 nights as i extended my stay. The reason for upgrade was they have some construction in progress and they felt that it might be noisy so they upgrade me..Now that is a very caring hotel as far as i am concerned..I will recommend to my friend for sure and i will return..They arranged and helped with tours and thing to do and see.Fantastic

To give people and idea of the neighbourhood, and the servicelevel of the staff, i hereby give you the rudest comment i have EVER gotten from hotelstaff (and i travel a lot) my wife any me (Who were celebrating our honeymoon) came back from dinner at 11 pm...here the frontdeskguy adresses my wife as a pr#stitute, and tells me that he need to charge me for bringing her back to our room....this is even the same guy who checked both of us in two days earlier (and the hotel is empty)

Awesome wooden villa in beautiful garden next to pool. Haven of tranquility in a beautiful setting. Close to Siem Reap town and Angkor Temples. Loved breakfast in traditional Cambodian open plan building whilst watching Koi Carp in stream. Whoever in charge of garden design is a shear genius. Loads of privacy, yet part of a big hotel. Professional, friendly staff. I can honestly only say good things about hotel and so recommend! After a day of temple watching truely relaxing. Spa fascilities and pool awesome. Please have the banana flower salad, lip smackingly fantastic.

Spacious Rooms

Spacious rooms within a large resort style complex just a short 10 minute Tuk Tuk ride from pub street made this hotel a great choice and value for money.

Our only complaint was that there was lots of building work underway and construction work so the 'resort atmosphere' was spoilt by the constant dust and bang banging of hammers.

The concierge was excellent.

Plus: big swimming pool ( at least when not half closed for a private event) , perfect service at the spa, nice gardens .Less: not much light in the room, disappointing service ( specially for check out, the buggy never came to take us, check out took more than 20 minutes), staff dit not seem really concerned by the feces (yes !) floating in the pool, rather limited choice at the restaurant if you stay more than a couple of day... Correct but I would not recommend. I'm sure you can find better services for the price.

The villas are spacious, and so are the rooms. The furniture is comfortable. The shower was outstanding. The service is excellent. But..the restaurants are not great. The indoor restaurant was closed, and outdoor one was infested with mosquitoes. The food and drink quality deserves much improvement. The breakfast buffet was extensive, but essentially tasteless. The lobby bar appeared to be closed most of the time, but there were also no people! The guest services manager was very attentive, helped us find local restaurants, and arranged for tuk-tuks.

Nice hotel with beautiful eco-design landscaping.

We enjoyed our stay of 4 nights in this beautiful villa-room surrounded by greenery with trees for comfort and peace after a hot day's outing. Beautiful pool setting with night entertainment and dining by poolside. It's about 12 mins taxi ride to airport and also within 15 mins ride to downtown old market and shopping. Very helpful concierge and hotel staff for transport arrangement including prompt house keeping responses. Good choices for breakfast (local cuisine and western).

Mostly satisfied except the room is not bright enough in day time. But you won't care it if you spend most of the day time at outside. Tug tug to the town centre takes about 10-15 mins. Drivers always ask for $4 or $5, but $3 always OK.

Pretty, giant hotel, needs a good cleaning

Arrived at huge complex, had to bring our own luggage up a very steep ramp which had very slick tile. Get up the ramp and to the front door, and the staff finally notices they have new guests, then given a cold towel and drink, checked in.

Taken to villa, floor filthy and starting to rot, bed hard as a rock. Asked for help with hard bed, was told they would talk to housekeeping, which never panned out in spite of multiple requests.

Bathroom ok, spacious and very little mold. Nice lounger tub for 1.

Logged onto the \"internet\", barely usable. Had hours long internet outages every day we were there.

Tried breakfast, stale eggs under a heat lamp, gallons (not exaggerating, either) of waffle/pancake mix, no maple syrup... Very undercooked bacon, pastries not replenished. Asian section more taken care of, food ok.

Staff unfailingly friendly, but not the most effective. Tuk tuks outside the hotel are related to hotel, charge more than local drivers...

The villas at least, are older, and worn out. Need a good remodel and more thorough cleaning.

Charmless, very dated, huge and impersonal

If you look for a charming stylish boutique hotel like place, this is the WORST ever… The exact opposite.
It is a place known in town for gigantic groups of mostly Chinese and Korean tourists.
The entrance hall looks like a train station hall: huge, sure, massive, cold and so dated!!! You just do not want to stay there…
Well. They have actually 3 hotel types: the Hotel, in the main building, Pool villas (looking nice and quite luxury on pics) and more expensive and a Inn… another building with I guess, other type of rooms than main building.
We had chosen the villa and paid a lot. It was Chinese New Year and a gala dinner was mandatory (you had to pay) 3 days in a row! More than 50usd/pers… Nearly same buffet for the 3 days. Starting at 6pm. ghostly empty by 9… Plus 2 giant screens loudly showing tacky boring and repeating cheer leaders like mini shows… Not even funny. Boring like hell!
And for the villa… it is most basic inside. There is absolutely no warmth, no style, no character at all. And super dark. You can hardly open the windows. The balcony may have the view on the pool, but a tacky pop song group is performing loudly every evening until 10!
We were 3, paid for the additional bed, but there were only 2 cups, 2 bathrobes etc…
All details… but when you pay the price, you expect the ad hoc service. Not happening!
As for staff at reception and concierge: polite stone cold and careless.
One positive thing is the pool: huge, round, beautiful.

It is basically like a private village so when you take tuk tuk or taxi ( which you will have to do as it is a little far to walk into town ) they will not allow taxi to take you to your villa but will put you in a golf cart and transport you from the main entrance. Overall very nice if a little far from town

We stayed at a few places in Siem Reap with our 4 and 5 year old: the Sokhalay stood out for great service, and particularly good food. The waitstaff and managers at the main restaurant, especially Visal, were fully accommodating and personalized the service. The rooms were quite large- truly roomy for a family of 4- and well cooled. The internet was strong. The largest issue with the rooms were the fact that the villas are very, very dark. it is a bit of trouble to open the double windows to open the wooden shitters that don't simply tilt up and down. It was impossible to get daylight in! although there are sliding doors, if you open the wood, you are left with screen, and no way to keep the AC in! Also, the hotel allows smokers: this will end soon if they want to be truly 5 star. Of course, you can ask for non0smoking rooms, but it is not policed. The pool was very clean, even under the bridges. Huge. the gym equipment was older, but fully functioning. Overall, the service was fantastic. I hope these guys can solve the small issues to be a great 5 star option that is locally owned. Support local businesses!!!

Definitely worth a visit

Very comfortable from arrival to departure. Great service and amenities all around. Large and clean rooms. Good location between Siem Reap City and the airport, though not much around the surrounding neighbourhood, the main attractions are just a short tuk-tuk ride away.

Excellent service and beautiful resort!

Stayed 3 nights at a garden villa. We were immediately impressed when we were picked up by 2 welcoming staff who offered us refreshment in the van.

The resort is beautifully laid out around an amazing pool. The steam room and spa were out of order which was dissapointing.

Breakfast/restaurant nearby the pool. Breakfast offered variety and was delicious. But breakfast lacked pancakes!

Our room was so spacious it made the stay feel that extra luxurious. Biggest downfall with the room was the bathroom. Bathroom was spacious also (seperate shower and bath) however the tiles were quite old and corners were quite blackened.

More Coffee!

We had two nights in this splendid hotel for around a third of the 'normal' rate. An online special. The hotel villas are superb. Beautifully appointed and quiet and comfortable. My only criticism is that there were only two sachets each of coffee, sugar and whitener... more would have been appreciated. and perhaps the staff are a little over-attentive, at least for New Zealanders' tastes. But, overall, a thoroughly splendid hotel experience. (Note: even if you love Korean food, as we do, avoid at all costs the Pyongyang Restaurant down the road...)

It is not so much a hotel as a series of detached and self-contained villas . All in all, a truly memorable experience for a lovely 2 or 3 days to enjoy Angkor Wat.

Management and staff were efficient and friendly, speak good English unlike other hotels I stayed in Siem Reap.

Beautiful people - wonderful country

We had a wonderful stay at Sokhalay. They were prompt in answering questions via email prior to our arrival and picked us up at the airport without any problems. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. They assisted us in renting bicycles (although I think we misunderstood that the ride to Angkor Watt was not 15 minutes, but about 50, so be aware), arranging a sunrise tuk tuk and booking a private tour by car. The breakfast buffet was pretty good, but might get tiresome if you're there for a long time. For our two nights it was more than sufficient with a good mix of eastern and western menu options. We also had one dinner at the hotel and although it wasn't the most delicious meal of our trip, it was still good and the presentation was excellent. Overall, we loved our trip and would definitely recommend the hotel. It was a little farther from the ruins than other hotels, but not far by any means, probably about ten minutes by car. The rooms were huge and nicely stocked with fresh fruit upon our arrival. The staff were wonderful, the pool was very well kept and nice for an afternoon dip. Absolutely no complaints - would stay there again for sure.

Superb!

We booked a Deluxe villa at a great price and we were pretty much blown away the moment we checked in, before we even saw our room. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful (Cambodian hotel service is generally top-notch). There is buggy service to bring us to our room, and as we checked in very late after a very long and tiring bus trip from Phnom Penh, it was very much appreciated. The surrounding looked amazing at night and the amazement peaked when we entered our room. The room was huge, and the balcony opens out straight to the pool. My friends ordered room service and they just can't stop raving about how good the pizza was. There are some (very minor) issues though: There was some construction going on right next to our room; a little noisy, especially annoying in the early morning. The breakfast needs some improvement, as we were sick of the food just the very next day. Otherwise, I highly recommend giving this place a try. It's like a lush oasis in the middle of a desert.

Great place to come home to

You could be excused for not noticing the hotel renovations taking place. There were few disruptions to the peace and beauty of the property. Spacious, clean rooms with basic but comfortable facilities. Buffet breakfast was excellent, very relaxing and watched over by friendly attentive staff. General hotel staff (reception, pool bar, house-keeping) also very courteous and helpful with generally good English language. Only downside for me was distance to city centre. You are still only a short tuk tuk ride away from 'downtown' but not quite walking distance. If you are feeling energetic, hire a bike! Enjoy Siem Reap.

This was an amazing hotel, with the most amazing staff, while it is outside of town, a Tuk tuk or guide and car can be obtained easily, I would stay here again in a heartbeat. The housekeeping staff was attentive to our every need, with room cleaning and turn down service evrynight. Room service was amazing and breakfast was a wonderful time.

A very 5 star stay!

The staff at Sohkalay bent over backward to make sure our trip was an excellent one. They have excellent training and were eager to show it. The hotel itself was beautiful with a very pleasing layout. The pool area was great (and they served delicious pizza!) The front lobby of the hotel was very grand, but seemed a bit cold and empty. The restaurant and the villas and pool area really brought out the warmth of the architecture and gardens.

Great hotel but prepare to find a taxi!

The only negative point regarding this hotel concerns the free hotel pickup and drop off service. Despite three emails to the hotel offering my arrival details and requesting a confirmation, the transport did not meet us and we had to find a taxi. Interestingly a previous review on this site on the 12th November posted a similar experience. This perhaps suggests that airport collection is only a minor issue to the hotel, but when a traveler arrives in a strange country it is of great comfort to be safe in the knowledge that they will be collected from the airport.
Despite this, the hotel is of a high standard and set in a nice quiet location only ten minutes from Pub street by Tuk Tuk. It is very clean offering a wide choice of breakfast and the staff are extremely friendly.

New resort hotel, between Siem Reap and airport. One of many new hotels on airport road. Lovely pool / villa arrangement behind main building, also where restaurant is located. Breakfast buffet was excellent, but for evening meals we went into town by tuk tuk - $5 e/w or $8 return. Room I hotel was very large and well-equipped. US $ used for everything - ATMs only issue US $.

A great oasis

The individual villas were spacious and well maintained. The garden setting was outstanding and was centered around a beautifull island pool. The staff were friendly and helpful at all times. The only negative was the failure of the pick up service from the airport. We arrived at Siem Reep airport with no Cambodian currency and no cell phone. It was only the good will of an airport employee who phoned the Resort, that we were eventually picked up some 40 minutes late. Although the Resort is a little out of town, we considered this a bonus. We were away from the hustle and bustle of the town yet only a short tuk tuk ride away. The tuk tuks were cheap and efficient, Five dollars to take you into town and $8 for a return. The driver would arrange to pick you up at an arranged location and specified time. Meals in town were very good and cheap. We ate a lot in Pub Street and The Alley.

Recent stay at Sokhalay Angkor

This is a relatively new hotel and is still going through some teething pain. However, the management is very accommodating and trying hard to make up for small oversights.
