The receptionist didn’t tell me about Wi-Fi password. I didn’t see there was one on the counter because I have vision problems. There was no sign in the room. Second day I met the same woman, asked if there was WiFi and password, she said, go to the reception desk to see. She could have told me the password which is a simple one.
The woman toilet room has some slot ran out of toilet paper for more than one day. The genitor seemed watched his cell phone a lot. Some travelers dumped their food into kitchen sinks, and some didn’t clean the utensils well or clean the mess they made.

This place is awful. Holes and half painted walls, grubby rooms and bathroom, and the kitchen is filthy. Didn't even want to put my bag down. Security is bad, homeless people living there trying to grab spare beds, just walk into the rooms as noone locks behind them. Got zero sleep as ambulance arrived 3am blaring their horn to be let in? Also the bedding was a sleeping bag...

Could not believe on first day no hot water on third floor bathroom then after that they clised it for construction so always had to travel to floor below for shower toilet or even just to brsh teeth. Rooms super hot with temp control and only a fan to help you would not recommend the place

For the price, it’s the best! The staff prioritize cleanliness and have certain rules that make staying in the shared pods even better.

I have literally no complaints I stayed there for 3 days. It was peaceful.

It's not luxury but for the price It's good. Staff is very nice and people are generally quiet and respectful of others. Across the street from the Sky Tower, around the corner from a grocery store, and right down the street from Queen St.

Cheap enough for a few nights

It's a hostel, and possibly the cheapest in the city, however it is still a hostel. YOU NEED A PASSPORT OR NZ GOVERNMENT ISSUED ID OR NEW ZEALAND DRIVERS LICENCE TO CHECK IN! Nowhere prior to arriving was this stated and it is one of their \"ToS\" for cancelling your booking, and I was travelling internally without my passport, Fortunately I have have a NZ license however. I understand most will be traveling with a passport so it won't affect them.
Check in was 1pm but had to wait 40 minutes as the manager was still checking or cleaning rooms which was no big dea. The 3rd floor mens bathroom was average, with 1 of the 2 showers not fully functional, however the mens bathroom on the 2nd floor was way cleaner and more practical. I stayed in a single occupancy private room (no window) and it was fine. Not that loud, mattress was not that great, minimal bedding was provided so was good I had a sleeping bag with me, but ample room for my luggage and a little table and chair in the room for eating.
Wifi was fast and consistent, laundry rooms in the basement were cheap ($4 for washer, $4 for dryer) they sell detergent in the reception apparently.

For a place to sleep, wash, and store your luggage it was adequate, however maybe I got lucky with my stay.

Windows in my room were open when I arrived - on a rainy day - bed was very wet from the rain. Thin duvet - got cold at night. No rubbish bin in [private] room. Toilet stalls don't properly close and/or don't lock. Shower doors have wide gaps through which you can see straight in. The building doesn't feel maintained or cared for. Many security cameras everywhere.

I have stayed here many times. Very good central location and good prices. Some rooms have fans and I was happy. PLease put fans in all rooms now as it is summer. The manager Muhammad is a very responsible, mature person and very helpful. Another very helpful and nice staff member is a South African guy. The other staff need training for better customer service. I was made to wait twice to check in as the staff was busy counting the shifts collection between 2.30 pm and 3,30pm. I was very tired and wanted to check in at once as I was coming from overseas. If that is the case , please write in the instructions that from 2.30pm to 3.30 pm the office is closed. To make customers wait especially when they are tired coming from overseas is not good and has never happened in any backpacker I have stayed in NZ and overseas.

The fact that they require you to bring your pillowcase to reception on checkout makes you wonder much. The staff is very friendly though. I’d suggest stay here only if necessary

I didn't like the fact that although Expedia said bank details were only in case we didn't show up, and we paid when we were there, this was not the case. I was booked in for entry at 1pm 6th March. My bank account was accessed and accommodation cost was removed at 1.51am(yes the middle of the night). I've traveled around the world and never had this happen before. As this is my first time I've used Expedia, I'm wondering, does this only happen with Expedia bookings, because I will definitely think twice about booking through Expedia again.

Skip this place like the plague.

While it was a private room, the entire place smelled nasty. I stayed one night and slept with my clothes on. I couldn’t put myself through a second night, just lost the money and moved to a hotel. There is only WiFi in the reception desk area and not in the rooms. Management didn’t care about the issues either.

This place was the worst place I have ever stayed (and I have stayed at some bad places). I cancelled my booking for the rest of the week, absolutely disgusting!
There literally was sh*t and urine all through the hall outside the toilets, the womens toilets doors didn’t even close so people could see in! The management didn’t care when I told them and he was extremely rude and sexist, I felt very intimidated and unsafe.
I had a private double room, it was like it hadn’t been cleaned, no air ventilation and broken springs in the bed.
Everything was so unclean it was an OHS danger, someone from the Auckland City council needs to properly review this hostels standards!
No one should even be allowed to stay somewhere like this, and then to charge people money for it,.. I want a refund... plain and simple...

Not a sight you would want to see....

Got a double-bed with ensuite room. When I walked into the bathroom, the basin and the toilet seat were covered with lady's hair. I pulled out the bed duvet, once again only to find fuman hair. It was obvious that the room was not cleaned. Poor receptionist had to run around looking for the housekeeper. Although it was fixed later, it was still an unnecessary experience should the job have been done properly and respectfully of the guest in the first place.

The bathroom was the worst I’ve seen with black mould on the walls and ceiling and chipping paint, broken toilet and in poor condition. My husband and I have stayed in hostels all around the world. Sometimes you find some that aren't too clean, but this takes the cake. The room was filthy! The kind that really creeps you out. There was food ground into the rug. 3D stains in the sheets. Various bodily fluids on the wall. We asked for another room and they said they were full so we asked to get our money back and the man at the desk said no. I asked to talked to a manager and he said that the manager wasn't there. I asked if one could be called and he told me no. He did, however, offer to give us free towels to make up for it. We ended up paying for another hotel bc there was just no way we could sleep in it.

All the building has a strong smell to food, spices and garlic.

The receptionist requested a $20 dollars deposit for the room key. He did not have change, so the deposit ended up being $30 dollars, with the promise to refund at my check out. It did not happened. At my check out they only refunded me $20 dollars.

When arriving they were very strict with their check in. Even with our 60L backpacks the person at reception simple pointed to where we could store our bags. Our confirmation said a noon check in, they would not allow us to check in until 1220 and made it seem like they were doing us a favor.
Once in our room, the walls were filthy. There was hair in the bed, covering the bathroom floor and all over the shower. It was like the room had bever been cleaned. And to top it off there was no water pressure in the shower. We paid for a queen ensuite which was a huge waste of money.

Great location and reasonably priced.
However, the bed I slept on had the metal slats broken, giving me uncomfortable feel when I lied on it. When I lifted up the duvet, noticed there was hair and a blood stain on the sheet. The pillow stunk. So asked the reception to replace the whole set. They got me a clean set and I changed them all myself.

I also used the old sheet to put it under the mattress to get rid of the bulky feel that the bent slats were giving me.

On my 2nd night, other guests started arguing right outside my room. They were shouting at each other. I felt the staff who would have been at the reception 24/7 could have done something to intervene. But I don't think they did that.

Poor customer service and unclean rooms

Booked one night here before flying out of Auckland.

The experience didn't start out great with a 25 minute wait to check in. A decent length que had formed and there was only one member of staff working the check in desk, with another doing some other task rather than helping persons to check in.

The check in was a long process, made even longer by the fact that after letting people wait in the que for a length of time and taking details, they then informed persons individually that the card reader wasn't working so all rooms had to be paid for in cash.

The disappointments didn't end there. I had booked a private en-suite room (Windowless) and found the room to be in a very poor state. There were marks all down the walls in the bathroom, the mirror in the bathroom appeared to have been recently ripped from the wall and the general cleanliness left a lot to be desired.

The temperature in the room was exceptionally uncomfortable with it being internal and obviously not benefitting from air conditioning. There was a ducting running through the room which made a rattling sound all night adding to the discomfort.

All in all, while cheap for central Auckland, I would spend the money on a better hotel even if further from the centre.

The backpackers was so dirty, smelt so bad and literally felt as though I was going to get bed bugs by sitting on my bed or on the couches in the common room.

I couldn't even bare to stay here it was that bad. I've slept in airports so am not a fussy person when it comes to staying in places, but this was disgusting. I ended up going to a different backpackers without getting a refund.

I be been in millions of different types of hostels in different countries but I be never seen such a disgusting place.
As soon as you walk in at the reception, which is situated in the common area, you can see a bunch of old and broken sofas with the springs coming out from every where, therefore that makes it impossible to sit.
When I get to my shared room I immediately smelled a mix between mold, sweat and urine.
\"My bed\" was covered with other people's stuffs.
Then I went into the toilet and each cabinet had wet floor, toilet paper everywhere and coming out from the rubbish bin.
On my way back to the common area I spotted a sock in the corner together with some dust and scraps.
Not mentioned the kitchen which was something incredible.
Flies everywhere, food all over, two small fridges for more than 1 hundred person.
In there I met a guy who found out in that moment his food was stolen! ( He also told me one of his friend got severe bed bugs reaction)
I decided straight away to go to the nearest Starbucks (the only one in Auckland that closes at midnight and open at 5:30.
Those hours in between I spent in the common area in sat on the only usable spot of the sofa.

I understand that the price reflects what you get but that place looks like a juvie, not an hostel!

I strongly discourage to get accomodation in this place.

Do not stay here!

The worst hostel experience we've had so far in New Zealand! The kitchen was a health hazard. Dirty bed sheets and an uncomfortable bed. Way too hot in the room. Lastly, what im guessing was a smoke detector or fire alarm was hanging off the ceiling with wire not attached. I can't describe how bad this place was! There is obviously some management issues with this place as it's so run down.

Run down dirty and squalid premises. Close to everything but a real dive. Our private room had a block of blue cheese festering on the windowsill, a plate of mouldy beef bones under the bed, and a grain-wave lurking in the wardrobe. No hangers, so I guess it needed to be used for something. Other effects like a red beanie, a French novel, and a package of contraceptive pills were also left behind. Our 'pillows' consisted of a pillow-case filled with a few cotton-balls. The wall above our bed was smudged with fingerprints in suggestive arrangements - a complete textbook for a forensics student. In the communal bathrooms there was a toilet without a seat (the urinal?), the hand soap was refilled with 9 parts water one part soap, and some showers looked like they were hoses sticking out of the wall. Everything was meagre, careless, and dirty. When we addressed the staff about the leftover food in our room they didn't really know what to do and asked us to talk to the manager during the daytime. One staff member did bring us new sheets, but burst into our room at 11.30 with them after one quick knock. We were already in bed with the lights out when this happened. When we left early and asked for a refund we were not given one. We did not manage to meet with the manager because we were busy every day, and he was only available from 11am-6pm. Sure it was central, convenient, and not too expensive so we didn't expect it to be great. But this place was a shambles.

So gross. The 'free wifi' in this hostel is only in reception which goes EXTREMELY slow and if you decide to buy some (which I did, 6 hours worth in fact) it is so insanely slow you cant use it. The room was disgusting and we were forced to stay in a windowless room, despite booking one with a window. The sheets had obviously not been changed and the bathroom was covered in mold. I would never stay again.

Don't stay here....

I read the reviews to late for me to change hostels as I had paid for 5 nights. DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE I DID. Do not stay here, I lasted 3 nights before just finding another place to stay. The room was filthy, the bed was filthy.

Theft is a major issue as well at this location as there is no one who watches the front door homeless people will come in and either sleep in your bed or steal anything not bolted down. Only a small locker is provided with your base rate, and have to pay for a locker outside of room. I read the reviews and thought no way could this hostel be as bad as what people were saying and I was half right... it's actually worse

One of the worst hostels we've ever stayed at

We stayed at the Surf 'n Snow for two nights at the end of April 2017 and were very disappointed - it ranks in the bottom three hostels we've stayed at in over four months of travelling across Asia and Oceania.

The location is excellent, but that is where it stops. Customer service was slow and confused. The room had no windows, very dirty carpets and bedding, uncomfortable metal frame beds and worst of all were very noisy - the air ventilation system links to the common room and reception so when residents are playing pool at 4am you here every shot and conversation.

The bathrooms were filthy dirty, with the urinals stank of months of uncleaned urine, while the showers were thick in soap scum shaved public hair which was there for the two days we stayed.

Compare this to the Jucy Snooze Hotel in Christchurch which was significantly cheaper and spotless, clean and with amazing facilities. We couldn't leave the Surf 'n Snow quickly enough.

CBD backpackers

A quiet safe backpackers close to a range of restaurants and eateries. I didn't look around the facilities as was a single night stay and I was dining out. I would suggest that the vinyl chairs for customers at the reception area be replaced as they are badly in need of recovering and give an impression of a rundown backpackers. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. I had a comfortable sleep and was pleasantly surprised how quiet the place was at night.

Don't go!

Room smelled terribly, bed collapsed after being fixed several times, basically had to sleep in the dirty floor. No refund, no boss in sight, the staff said the boss doesn't care! Horrible night, kitchen was disgusting even for a hostel with dead flies everywhere. Only good thing was the location...

Central city

Confusion with our booking. Only 1 of the 2 double rooms was available. Had to split into 2 dorms, one smelt like fish so one of our group moved to the lounge to try and get some sleep. Close to central city, cheap backpackers. You get what you pay for especially on a busy weekend of events. Just annoyed as we had booked 5 months earlier

There was literally a massive blood stain on the carpet in my room, the entire hostel smelt awful, and the showers on the third level either didn't work or ran cold. Definitely the worst place I have ever stayed. It was cheap though.

Very old and thin foam mattress, bed linen, creaky, damaged bunk beds. Poorly maintained. Fridge not cleaned out. Poor water pressure and temp. Great location, 1 block from Sky Tower.

I booked a single room with private bath. Bed sheets and pillow cases were stained. Every surface in the bathroom had mold and/or weird discoloration. Door did not fully shut. I could hear everything that was said or done on my floor through the walls. You have to pay for wifi and it barely works. I ended up just getting a room at a nearby hotel. The price for the room here was close to the price of a nice hotel room. The price should have much much cheaper for the condition of the room

Not really a mattress

The foam thing they have as mattress are so uncomfortable. Plus they water down their soap way too much. I cut it down to a third myself at home but their stuff doesn't even bubble up.

The most basic hotel. Convenient but i have never seen such a noisy hostel before! No matter what day of the week there will be noise all night long. Definitely worth bringing ear plugs!
