I used, on occasion, to review hotels as part of my job working for a national newspaper - luckily for the Hungaria, this won't be going to print..
If you are looking for a basic no frills hotel, central, with good access to public transport then this hotel fits the bill nicely. Breakfast is a sparse affair... reconstituted scrambled eggs, cheap cuts of cold meat, fruit, yoghurt and a cold porridge like substance. It does the job but that's about it.
I had upgraded to a junior suite for my visit and the room was spartan but clean and fairly spacious.
The lower floors looked pretty dismal and could clearly benefit from a refurb.
The staff were generally lovely, courteous and helpful - easily the hotel's strongest asset.
There is not much by way of facilities, so, if you like a pool/spa or gym session, then this is not for you.
Overall, I'd describe the experience as 'adequate'.

They brought the food in the restaurant on neewspaper. When I protested, they said this was a special paper prepared specifically for food. Then what is the paint for the letters? It was directly in touch with the food. Also, they have “service charge” (another name for the tip), but only one lady waitress told me that don’t give a tip, it is included in the bill. The other waiters did not mention this, they expected the second tip. Nice, yes?

The hotel met our needs. Recently renovated. Our room was a bit \"cozy\". Super friendly and helpful staff. Nice breakfast. Parking under the building. Public transportation hub nearby. Also craft beer close by. Will consider staying there again because of the location.

I often take trains to/from Keleti and this hotel is walkable (even with heavy luggage) from the train station. The staff are very eager to help you with your needs. The breakfast is fabulous. Transportation options are all very close by. The hotel has a “Hungarian feel” and I really like that about it.

Overall, we had a great 3 nights, breakfast each morning was was included and lots to
Choose from (buffet style) and was good

and included in our booking, easy access to Keleti Train Station (5 mins walk), clean and looks like it was renovated, bathroom tub/shower should be hard for some with accessibility needs or older travellers, as it’s a good step up into the bath.

My room was upgraded for free which was a nice surprise after a long flight.
Street traffic from hotel room can be heard at night since it's next to busy roads but the location is very convenient for people travelling from/to Keleti railway station.

Good for budget travel

Location is good as it very close to the main station, price also good for value it reflects the hotel is aged. My room next to the lift and it’s clear to hear the ppl talking when sitting outside the sofa and lift ring. Room is clear, however the facilities are aged, the bed sinks. But in compare to the price and convenience, it is fair enough. Good for budget travel.

The hotel is very close to the Keleti train station and you can walk across the street and go underground to access it. The front desk was helpful and the room was nice, and decent sized. Seemed to be fairly quiet. All in all a good stay at a conventient location.

Property is ok, room was adequate, clean. Issue is breakfast buffet, the caffe is watered down, not enough personal to handle it. I was there a year ago, was much better. The location is good, next to the train station and 2 lines of Metro. and on major thoroughfare. The area became run down, although is safe. The metropolitan government run by socialists is responsible for it. Sounds familiar, Dave thing happening in democrats run cities in USA. At least the are is still safe. Pity, Budapest is a beautiful city.

The hotel is a little old, but clean and the bed is very comfortable. Everyone is very friendly and kind.

Stayed 4 nights, ordered the same thing from room service 3 times, got 3 different variations each time. It was not good food at all. Cleanliness leaves a little too be desired. The bathroom for example, unless you used grout with built in mold, the tiles haven't been properly cleaned in years. The bottle opener in my room had some sort of deposit in it too. Not great, but passable. Can not fault the staff though, impeccable service from start to finish.

The room which I saw on the site of Hotels.com didn't match what they offered. The room on the site was 18 square metres and they gave me less than 10 square meters. They changed the room after I refused the first room.
The ladies on the reception were not helpful at all regarding the pass word of the wifi.

The staff were helpful and very pleasant. The hotel itself was fine. The problem we had was there were ambulance sirens screeching at all hours of the night. I know this is out of the control of the hotelstaff, however there is such a thing as soundnproof glass for the windows. I really believe the owners of the hotel should invest in assuring a little mire peace and quiet, as the lack of sleep nearly ruined our vacation.

The hotel is very well located, just a few steps from one of the main train/metro stations. But is an old hotel focused on big tourist groups and excursions, most of personnel is old and tired perhaps, kind of rude and not precisely willing to help, the rugs are loaded with lots of accumulated dust, smell bad, it seems air conditions is centrally controlled. our was too hot, so we did shoot it down and better open the window. Breakfast, although variated, has nothing to highlight except that is in a huge saloon.

Value stay in a big city hotel

I was happy that Reception allowed us to check in early, since our room was already prepared.
We had a basic economy room, I guess it was a good value for the price we paid, but otherwise the room was in a quite tired and dated state. The plus side, however, was that the bed was comfortable, the bed sheets clean and of good quality. The bathroom was also clean. Even though the room overlooked the busiest road in Budapest, with the windows closed, there was no noise at all.

Affordable hotel located near Keleti Train Station

Affordable hotel located 5 mins from Buapest Keleti Central Train Station, on a main road which has public transport links just outside the hotel, ie public bus, and \"The BigBus\" hop-on hop-off tour. Approximately 20-30 minute walk to main tourist attractions along the Danube River. The hotel has a nice big restaurant, and a bar/cafe area. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Can also help with booking tour tickets etc.

Our standard twin room on 8th floor was comfortable & clean. Only negatives of our stay was that the temperature of our room was a little too hot, even during winter. We were unable to adjust the climate control to cool & had to keep the window open, which meant you could then hear the street noise & sirens. Also the fridge did not work.

Many rooms of the hotel face on to a very busy road and there is no double glazing, the traffic noise was so loud I had to double-check that the window was not open. The room was relatively clean with the exception of two very dirty glasses provided. The women working behind the hotel bar could have been more friendly, I felt like an inconvenience just for asking for some ice.

Location was fine and hotel was fine overall, just a few things which could have made our stay a lot more comfortable. 1st was the noise in the room from the traffic, we were on the 7th floor and could hear it throughout the night. 2nd was the air conditioning in the room, which was non existent and if it was to work, would have rattled all night, the temperature was mild for time of year. 3rd and last thing, the tea/coffee facilities in the room, there wasn’t any milk and the information card on the tea tray was asking us to pay for topping up facilities after 1st day of use, also no bottled water in fridge on arrival. The hotel as I said was ok overall, minor issues which would could have been avoided.

The staff here are excellent and a credit to the Danubius brand . We had a problem at the Flamenco which the staff there could/would not deal with. It was sorted out immediately by a charming lady from customer relations . There is only one hotel that will be having my return custom.

I was very happy with Hotel Hungaria. Very Clean. Suited all my needs for my short stay. Public Transport directly at the Door Entrance . Railway Station within 5minute walk. City sightseeing bus stops directly at the entrance. This makes your stay more welcome as you can get round the City from literally Home from Home. I was well impressed and would stay here again.

Buffet meal hot food was freezing cold. It was advertised as a city centre hotel but I had a 15 minute walk to the tram stop to get the tram into the city centre! All sorts of extras tax etc were added on to my bill not shown by Expedia at the time. My room was ok but cold. Staff were fine. Each time you bought something g and tonic drink etc then ,10-15 per cent was added to the bill! Would not stay again tho' lounges were fine. Female 76.

The rooms are comfortable, but they are very stingy with coffee sachets in the rooms. The bathroom tiles needed cleaning (room 621). Breakfast was a nightmare, could not get a table at 8 o’clock in the morning. Luckily Aldi, Tesco and Lidil provided excellent breakfast, just down the road.

A Major Bargain

Value and convenience are the things that drew me to the Hungaria City Center Hotel, and they are important considerations not only for me but for most travelers, I assume. The hotel is very near the Keleti RR Station, convenient to the Ferenc Liszt (BUD) Airport, and located very near key subway and bus stops. I noticed that this hotel sets aside a separate breakfast room for airline flight crews. The hotel also hosts numerous tour groups, so the lobby at certain hours can get very frenzied. I would not recommend this hotel to a honeymooning couple or to anyone with, well, Ritz-Carlton expectations. It is a fairly austere hotel in a neighborhood that has seen better days. The hotel breakfast 7 to 10 each morning is quite good, but also packed with people. My very small room had a safe which I couldn't get to lock. I gave up on the safe as I did not want to risk having my passport and other essentials locked up at departure time. My bathroom included a bathtub with a hose-like shower extension. The room had a small working refrigerator but I forget whether it was stocked.

Hotel is not fancy, if you're expecting a 4 stars hotel it's nothing like it, but the bed was clean so as the toilet. Service is good and they're friendly.
I was on the highest floor (8th), though the sirens sounds was very loud, woke me up at least 10 times, unless you're dead sleep, it won't bother you.
Staff were very helpful. I asked once for ice at midnigt, they called the staff from the catering who got me a jug full of ice
I asked the security staff outside about the bus stop, even though he didn't understand English well, he asked a taxi driver, then walked me there himself (2 mins away).
I highly appreciate the service level.

The location was convenient near the metro and train station. The lobby was always crowded. The room needed renovation. In fact, the entire hotel seemed quite dated. There was a lot of noise outside of my room mostly from other guests. It seems Hotel Hungaria was the hotel of choice for out of town teenage athletes to stay at. The breakfast buffet was mediocre with not much variety. The room was cramped, especially the bathroom. It is a good thing Budapest is such a wonderful city that I hardly ever spent anytime in the room besides to sleep and shower. Next time, I will look to spend more money on a room closer to the Danube.
