Sydney’s most disgusting hostel.

Disgusting hostel, one of the worst I’ve stayed in (and I’ve stayed in quite a few). Bathrooms were disgusting, with mould on the ceiling and puddles on the floor. Bunk beds were rickety and felt like they were moments away from collapsing. The stairwell reeked of urine. The dorm room was dusty, dark and smelly, with roaches. One of the toilets was missing a button, so that you had to reach into the cistern to flush it. I didn’t use the kitchen or shower. I checked out a day early because I just couldn’t stay there any longer. Just because it’s a budget hostel does not mean that travellers should be subject to such conditions. At least the staff were lovely. Unfortunately that doesn’t make up for the disgusting living conditions.

スタッフの方はフレンドリーで良い方達でした。6人部屋はとても広く1人1つ小さめのスーツケースが入る大きさのロッカーがあり良かったです。シャワー室の鍵が壊れていたり固定式のシャワーのため少し使いづらい所はマイナス点です。立地、安さ重視の方むけだと思います。

The facilities were obviously very old, there were other patrons shouting very loudly well after midnight, the communal fridges looked very unclean and smelled like off food. Additionally, the elevator wasn't very efficient and took ages to move one floor, the other patrons wouldn't handover the use of the TV to anyone else. The bathrooms had no racks or shelves to place toiletries or clothes, and the bed was extraordinarily squeaky. As well as other roommates sleeping all day long, preventing adequate lighting and a sense of unwelcomeness.

Gross, dark, stuff room full of stuff everywhere and smelly people who are basically homeless people squatting. Never heard such disgusting gobbing/retching/snoring sounds in all my life. Dirty, smelly facilities too. And nice mouldy mugs outside the bedroom door. Sleeping on a plastic pillow is also not a nice experience. This hostel is a rip off.

Needs serious cleaning

The room was very small, which we expected. The beds were comfortable enough, but that's where the positive comments end. The bathrooms and showers were filthy and the kitchen was gross. We found small bugs crawling around in the food cabinets and there were scraps in the sink drain. There were very few dishes to choose from & several of those were dirty. The eating tables hadn't been cleaned in a while.

We couldn't wait to get out of there.

My two night stay at Sydney Backpackers

The banker I was sleeping had no rail/ladder to climb, I had to struggle climbing up the banker. Not safe for an elderly guest. I felt sorry for the two girls sleeping in same room, no privacy. Everyone was sleeping with their clothes on.
There was no air condition in the room.

Please don’t stay here!

I travel a lot and mostly skip the review part if it was bad and give reviews only the good ones but this time, I have to do it.

I stayed here on 11//21-11/23. Starting with bad service. The check in person got irritated when I ask him to repeat. He has an accent but if I am patient with him, he should try the same especially he is the one who giving service. He became shot for any answers given. The next day, the front desk girl was worse. Starting I said good morning when I was putting the linen in the basket at the front office and she acknowledged me. I checked out a few minutes later and she asked me if I strip and put the linen in the basket!! She was reading the magazine the whole time on conversation. The airport shuttle was late and I asked her to check for me so I don’t have to pay international call from my cell phone. She ask if I have the ticket. I replied, yes I got it from you guys yesterday and showed her the paid ticket. She still asked whether I had paid for it!! I asked whether ones can get ticket if not paid? She replied ‘yes you can!’ And continued looking down at her magazine with no other words, no explanation nor response to my asking for help. I had to call the shuttle on my cell phone paying internaltion rate.
Next day, I was itchy all over and saw numerous red itchy bumps on my arms, legs, shoulders and back. Total more than 40 bite bumps!! Bad bed bugs bite!

I strongly recommend not to stay here but feel free to prove it yourself.

Long time since I used a backpacker hotel - decor was much the same as I remember 30 years ago!

Really dirty and poor kitchen equipment

Bathrooms were so dirty i covered the sink with glad wrap when doing my eye contacts. Really gross to have a shower and do makeup etc in. Kitchen was also extremely dirty, and pretty much no cooking equipment. I had to eat most meals out because nothing to cook with and what is there is so dirty I wouldnt eat from it.

Roughing it in Sydney

Don't normally leave negative reviews but 10 years ago this was a good place to stay. Now, compared to sleeping on the street and using the public toilets it was probably marginally better.

If you want shelter and a modicum of security on a tight budget this might be for you. Other than that I'd give it a wide berth/miss.

Cheap and good location

This backpackers was cheap and provided everything I needed; affordability, good location, good bed and hot shower. It's not the HiIlton in terms of luxury but it doesn't charge Hilton prices either.

the room smell terribly and visibly dirty. The reception said that the centralised heater was on overnight but it was freaking cold. The shared toilet was so disgusting as well as the kitchen and laundry. And I booked a single room with a double bed in photo, and I ended up with a bunk bed. I understand it is a backpacker place, but I obviously paid extra for comfort and privacy. I informed the reception that I tend to bump my head whenever I am in a bunk bed and the reason I booked a single room. She was not helpful at all and was more proud that they have upgraded me in a bigger room good for four person dorm for only myself. When the problem is not about the size of the room that I could not even enjoy.

Terrible service and dirty!

The bathroom was so dirty. They turned off the heaters all the time so the room was cold and uncomfortable. Even we had to buy warmer (normal),blanket, but still it was vold in the room. The blanket they gave for free was almost a table cloth! When complained about the heater they said its on a timer and turns off automatically after 2 hours! When we sleep at night and reception is closed how we supposed to turn on the heater? No liquid soap in the bathrooms. Just solid soap! Who uses solid soap in a public place shared bathroom which looks 100 years old?!!!

You get what you pay for!

Cheap room in the heart of downtown Sydney, easy walk to almost everywhere I wanted to go. People at front desk were friendly and helpful. Close to train station. Down sides.. not very clean.. someone in the 16 bed dorm that I was staying in complained of bed bugs.. I seen the bites all over his body.. Luckily I did not encounter this. Rooms and bathrooms in disrepair and dirty. No kind of system to keep track of who is in which bed.. after my first nights stay I came back to the room to find that someone had taken my bed.. I had to go down to the front desk to get new bedding so that I could make up another bed.

Worst hostel i have ever stayed in.

Do not book this hostel unless you are seriously out of money and need a good location in downtown. The room stinks and there is no AC. Some not-so-friendly people stay there like home since they offer long term accommodation. Hostel is extremely dirty and cockroaches found in room. Overall, the hostel is a concentration camp.

The hostel was really dirty. The rooms don't get cleaned even when guest leave. The kitchen was unhygienic, I even attempted to get up early to use the kitchen before everyone had woken up thinking it would be cleaner, but no it was still filthy. The bathrooms are unsanitary and two of them didn't have lights, with urine on the floor and showers with grime and dirt build up. The washing machines don't actually clean your clothes. There was a really odd vibe too. Not very friendly. I have stayed in hostels all over Australia and South East Asia, this is by far the worst.

Cheap close to shopping and train and within city

I stayed there for 3 nights and my purpose is to watch the NYE in sydney. The location is really good near to shops and train station. Comfort and cleaniness well u get wat u paid for. Not bad at all. First time to stay in a hostel and i could say its not bad at all esp wen ur n a budget or just staying there to sleep.

Toilets worse than a public bathroom!

The shared bathroom facility's were by far the most disgusting I have ever experienced. They were literally unusable. As in we chose to go to public bathrooms instead of having to use the clogged, urine soaked, completely uncleared shared facilities that were on offer here. That said, the room was passable. But honestly, even for a budget hotel this was a joke.

Great Location

Very convenient location in the heart of town. Good value if all you need is a place to sleep. We spent our entire second day on a Blue Mountains tour,returned late afternoon and left the next morning so ideal for our purposes. Would not stay here if you plan to be on property all the time. Lounge space and lobby limited. Community kitchen available and front desk can help with booking tours.

Overall, it was a quiet place to sleep, no traffic going past right outside as it's located in a laneway. Well located for food, like 1-2 minutes walk if that :) Everyone I bumped into there was very friendly. Only a very thin old blanket was provided so just as well I bought along my own sleeping bag and towel (which also wasn't provided). Would be nicer if the shower and toilets were actually cleaned properly. I'd see them going to clean them but it was if they didn't actually clean them at all :(

The only good part was the location unfortunately.

I had a really disappointing experience from the moment I arrived and was handed my own sheets, pillowcase and an old, thin blanket. Was charged $2 to use my card for a key deposit.
My room had hair all over the floor and looked dirty. The cover on my mattress had stains on it. There was 4 appliances and an extension lead all plugged into the one power point with power board - seemed very unsafe.
Paid $2 for an old towel but didn't end up using it as the showers looked filthy. The hand basins had no hot water available and there were pieces of an old, dirty bar of soap. No hand towel or hand dryer.
Fortunately I was only staying one night and I couldn't wait to get out of there in the morning. When I did check out, the staff member was rude, didn't thank me, didn't say goodbye, there were no pleasantries. Pretty disappointing overall.

EVERYTHING HERE IS LOUSY!

Very lousy hotel. When I arrived to check in. There was a guest who complained that he was robbed. His laptop and his bag were stolen. The front desk officer just ignored him. I was alrmed by the reaction of the staff. Mattress was thin. When u check in. They give u bed sheets and blanket. No towel. I thought this was a hotel. It was Run more like a dormitory. Only thing nice about this is the location.

Amazing location, but nothing else positive!

There was a massive confusion when I was picked up at the airport as to whether my seat on the shuttle bus had been booked. The location is great. You can't be closer to the city centre. But when I arrived at my room I was extremely disappointed. The bathrooms are outdated and crumbling. There are also strange characters hanging around who don't look like they don't belong in a hostel. I didn't feel safe as a woman travelling alone. Luckily my stay was short.

Excellent location! Terrible hostel.

You can't get any better location than this place. But there are also a number of hostels around the block. This hostel had a tiny kitchen, I mean tiny! No real social area other than the dining room, also small. Showers were, you guessed it, small, but also dirty. And there were people living there for months that claimed the room as their own, spreading things everywhere with no regard of anyone else. SKIP this and find ANY place around the corner!

The worst place I ever stayed. Compare to other backpacker, this place is not cheap, but really noisy at night and shared bathrooms are dirty. Additionally, if you pay by card, there is $2 surcharge!

If you're looking for a budget or best deal accomodation with kinda \"luxury\" location ...then Sydney Backpacker Hotel is the right choice. It is strategically located in the heart of Sydney, between two main CBD street (Pitt st and George st) and only walking distance from Townhall railstation and Darling harbour

I only stayed for a night but I did like the hostel. I found the service good but the bed was as hard as a rock and not too comfortable. But it was very clean and attracted awesome people. Would recommend if you don't mind a hard bed!

Rooms were big and beds included pillow and sheets.
Bathroom and showers were dirty and small.
One staff-member friendly and service-minded, the rest indifferent.
Location is good.
I took the train from the airport to Central station (had seen Central st on map next to the hostel on the map) but Town Hall is a better station.

Good location and cheap stay

Hostel is located in the center of Sydney CBD (downtown), and is very close to the train station, mall, grocery stores, and various other wonderful landmarks that Sydney has to offer. But aside from the good location and the cheap price of the rooms/beds, the condition of the hostel is below average. Kitchen and the bathroom area are kept clean, but the rooms are hot and smelly. No heating system or air conditioning was available in the room I stayed in, so it was hot and humid - making it uncomfortable to sleep during the night. I recommend this hotel to backpackers and students traveling on a budget. Definitely not ideal for families and couples looking for quiet/private place to stay at.

Good value, if U R after a place to spend nights

I was in Sydney for a visit, so being busy all the day and just wanted to spend the night, was good option for the price you pay.
staff were friendly, but the noise of the youth dwellers was high,
it is just in the heart of the city, with easy reach for all attractions and transport. cleanness of the room was not you might expect due to many resident in the room. Free WiFi was great, but the speed was OK, but not that good to make Skype or Viber calls with family at home.

Great location but barely a bed

It really is just sleeping cubicles with , it seems, a noisy family in residence attached , they knock off at 11 pm and on comes the TV and family noises till well past midnight . The noise was not from the guests but either from the resident workers or their nieghbours I couldn't track it down though I did look for a door to knock on . I would never stay there again, honestly, pay a few dollars more . The purpose of a bed is to sleep in and if you can't do that then whats the point? For the first time ever I had to put the mattress on the floor to get any comfort , the bed are definitly built for the Asian market being very short . I am 180 cm tall , not enormous for a European, and simply did not fit in those beds ! Give it a miss

Bring earplugs and a spare blanket

I stayed in a female-only dorm room on the 4th floor. Whilst the room was great with a bar fridge and tv, you could hear every word spoken in the hallway. There is a lot of construction going on in the street outside which starts early in the morning as well, so ear plugs are a must. Would also recommend bringing or renting an extra blanket as it gets pretty cold in the dead of the night and the central heating does not kick in until around 6am.

Exactly what it is

I popped into Sydney for a concert and needed a place to stay for the night. It was exactly what it was supposed to be - a cheap place to stay. I wasn't at the hotel for the amenities - Sydney itself is where I spent my time. The staff was really nice and friendly. A bonus was that it was directly down the street from the concert venue so there was no way to get lost. The train station was also down the street, so I could go from there to anywhere. Great place to stay if you're only using your room for sleeping and plan to spend most of your time exploring.

Comfy beds and great location

The service was good. They were more than happy to help, recommend and also show directions of places. My bed was comfy and it ihas really big lockers for your luggage and belongings just remember to bring a lock. The location was amazing with walking distance to all nice attractions also 2 min walk to Town Hall station that takes you to the airport. My only negative experience were the bathrooms. The smell was not nice and it was very old and looked as if it wasnt been cleaned. Id recommend the staff to put refreshener spray and make it look and smell nicer :-)

great location, poor cleanliness of toilet

the service of the hotel was disappointed, staff dumped my personal belonging which i needed to get it back from the trash. people didn't follow the rules,e.g. male using female toilet, smoking in the hotel area. Also, they were too noisy too.

bad experience

i wish i can change time and not book this place, there was no help from staff , i agree its back packers hostel but every one must hv basic needs provided , i stayed 3 nights and i nvr had my locker , i had to carry my bag all day with me , and staff did not even bothered to come in room and provide with service.rooms were over crowded n noisy .i thought im in 3rd world country where i was not noticed and they just wanted my money.i cant belive australian govt allows such places to run business, very strange.
