International Travel Checklist: What to Prepare Before Departure

Work through documents, confirmed bookings, money, connectivity and airport preparations in a practical order before you leave.
In this guide

A travel checklist for documents, bookings and arrival plans sits beside a passport, phone, suitcase and map pin, organizing the main departure preparations.

A useful travel checklist puts the decisions with long lead times first, then checks the details that can change close to departure. Passport renewal belongs early in the process; a boarding gate check belongs at the airport. Separating those tasks makes the list easier to use.

Use this guide as a planning sheet for your own route and travelers. It links to more detailed guides when a question needs a full explanation. Mark each task complete only when you have the relevant document, confirmation or answer.

Start with documents and entry permission

Check the actual passport for every traveler, including children. Establish the destination's validity and issue-date requirements, any visa or electronic authorization and the supporting documents required for the trip. Include the documents needed to return to your country of residence.

Check each transit country in both directions, including airport changes and baggage collection. Use our passport and entry checklist and transit visa guide to identify the questions, then confirm the answer with the relevant official authority.

The US State Department's international travel checklist is an official preparation resource written for US travelers. Use your own government's advice and destination entry instructions for nationality-specific decisions.

Confirm what you have actually booked

BookingCheck before departureSave offline
FlightsPassenger names, dates, airports, operators, baggage and ticket status.Confirmation, supplied airline references and itinerary.

Transfers or onward travelPickup point, timing and the confirmed service.Reference and access instructions.

Keep payment and service confirmation separate. If a payment has been sent but the travel status is unclear, resolve it through the booking service rather than assuming the transfer is your ticket. Our booking-status guide explains which records to compare.

When still planning, compare flights and hotels using the same travel dates and full passenger group. A saved result is different from a completed booking.

Arrange health needs and review insurance

Review the trip's health needs early enough to obtain professional advice and any required documents. Check the legal status of prescribed medicines in the destination and transit countries rather than assuming a home prescription permits carriage everywhere.

The CDC's guidance on traveling with medicine recommends checking destination rules and carrying medicines in their original labeled containers. Discuss supply, storage and any time-zone issues with your healthcare professional.

Check insurance eligibility, dates, activities, medical declarations and claim conditions. Save the emergency contact and find out when authorization is required. Use the insurance checklist to review the actual policy rather than relying on its headline benefits.

Plan money for arrival and local payments

Check the card or payment method needed for hotel deposits and local charges. An accommodation booking paid online does not necessarily remove the property's guarantee requirement. Read the hotel deposit guide and confirm essential requirements before arrival.

Review overseas card fees, ATM terms and a practical backup payment method. Our local versus home currency guide explains conversion offers and the costs that remain separate. Keep enough access to funds for the first transfer without relying on one device or one payment route.

For crypto payments, follow the verified current invoice and retain the booking and payment records together. Keep wallet recovery information private. Review the travel scam checklist before responding to unexpected payment demands.

Prepare your phone and an offline document folder

Check your phone's eSIM compatibility and lock status before choosing a plan. Read its coverage, validity and activation conditions; installing a profile and starting the package are not always the same event. Browse destination eSIM options for the route you will actually travel.

Follow the installation guide using a suitable connection. If keeping your home line active, review the dual-SIM and roaming settings so you understand which line handles data, calls and messages.

Save the hotel address, transfer instructions, booking documents and important numbers offline. Make sure you can access them without an internet-dependent login at the moment you need them. Protect the device and document folder, and share only the information a travel companion actually needs.

Complete the final flight and packing checks

When the airline's check-in opens, use the supplied airline reference and follow the operating carrier's instructions. Save accepted boarding passes and record the check-in, bag-drop and gate deadlines separately. Our online check-in guide explains the process.

Review cabin and checked-baggage limits for the selected fare. Keep permitted power banks and spare lithium batteries in the cabin, including when a bag is gate-checked; follow the battery guide and the current airline policy. Save bag-tag receipts after checking luggage.

Check flight status, the departure airport and the first night's arrival arrangements. If plans change, use the flight disruption plan and tell the hotel about a late arrival. If baggage is missing or damaged, follow the airport baggage action plan promptly.

Departure checklist questions

Which tasks should I do first?

Start with documents, permissions and other requirements that may take time. Check-in and live airport information come later.

Should every travel document be stored only on my phone?

Plan an appropriate backup and follow any requirement for an original or printed document. Make essential details available offline.

Does paying online remove hotel arrival costs?

Not automatically. Read the property's deposit, local-charge and accepted-payment requirements.

What should I recheck after changing flights?

Review documents for the new route, airports, connections, baggage and arrival dates, then update other affected arrangements.
