At check-in, I was advised that the bar & Resturant were both closed, the hotel is operating on room only, service users were council tenants, with several congregating in corridors, strong smell on the premises.

Strange, weird, ultimately horrible

Bizarre hotel in good location. Whole place felt grubby and poorly designed and furnished. Staff were asleep on chairs outside the rooms, really strange. No sense of customer service.
Bed uncomfortable. Electricity and light switches hard to work out and weird. No free parking, no parking at all, even though they advertised it.

Where do I start with the Carmelite? Parking - although it does say that there is parking, there's not - you have to park in one of the carparks either in the shopping centre or the train station. On arrival I actually though the hotel was closed as it was in darkness and the door was locked - when I eventually got in to the hotel I was met by 2 rather large security guards who didnt actually understand why i was there - a member of staff did appear and looked a but shocked when I said had a reservation - not surprised as the hotel seems to be a half way house for migrants/immigrants at the moment which is a shame as i can imagine it was a lovely place to stay in beforehand. Sleep was interrupted several times through the night by shouting coming from other rooms and kids in the corridors early in the morning. Not 100% sure if the security guards are to keep people out or to keep people in? On departure - no hotel staff around just the security guards so I just gave them the key and hot footed it out of there as quickly as possible, A real shame as like I said earlier, this hotel was probably fantastic but it just needs some care and attention and to get back to being a proper hotel - I really do think that there should be something mentioned to people before booking the situation regarding their live-in guests/inmates.

Felt a bit unwelcoming as the front door was always locked, even during the day.

Breakfast was really good though, the chef can make a good omelette!!

unexpected, would not stay again

The place felt strange on arrival. There was a lot of randoms hanging around in the main reception area. I later realised that these were refugees/immigrants awaiting social housing and staying in temporary hotel accommodation on site.

I felt uncomfortable as a solo female traveller being what appeared to be the only paying guest on the premises.

That said, the staff were friendly and accommodate my request to move rooms to a room with a bath. Rooms dated but comfortable. Stayed on a room only basis.

Not as expected...

Looked amazing online, however in reality it's a little run down. We stayed in the Cabanel Suite which is one of the best rooms and can tell it badly needed refreshed. Paint needed touched up, loose carpet, really noisy annoying fan in the bathroom. Sleep wasnt great, kept hearing doors shut and there was a big draft at the window where the bed was so was cold. Wasn't the cleanest. The bath had a lot of brown and pink dirty marks?
Upon arrival it felt a little intimidating as there was always security guards at the front door. It turns out this hotel is currently housing a lot of refugees / illegal immigrants? We did not see anyone else there who I'd consider to be a paying guest so the atmosphere was pretty poor.

Reception staff very helpful on arrival,advised to park in car park, 5 mins walk away, as cheaper than outside the hotel, due to being in the Middle of the town centre. room very nice, bed very comfortably.
Barman couldn't do enough to help, nothing was too much trouble for him, what a credit to the hotel. Food beautiful, well presented.

Lovely but rather noisey

Room was lovely however for the price of the room we expected a better sleep. Everything from outside could be heard resulting in not a great sleep for both nights of our two night stay. Booking a suite we expected a lovely relaxing atmosphere and the noise outside ruined this. Im aware this noise outwith the hotel cannot be controlled by the hotel but im sure there are some sound proofing measures that could be put in place. Or some way of explaining on the website which rooms are more peaceful.

Booked a room for one night. Room had the amenities we needed, however, there was a stain on the top of the duvet that looked questionable (pictured).

I was also charged twice for this room. The first member of staff I spoke to regarding this was unhelpful and rude, which was disappointing, especially considering the state of the bed. I spoke to a different member of staff the next day over the phone who was very helpful, however, and sorted out the double charge for me.

Overall, I would not recommend due to having a dirty duvet and unhelpful staff when we were at the location - it soured our visit.

After a rocky start we had a nice time

When we first arrived there was a mix up with our room (they had us down for a double room but we paid for exectutive king room), we then got the keys to room 103, as soon as we got in the room i wasnt happy. The room was not clean at all, so my husband went down to management and they apologised for the mess and moved us to a lovely clean room after that and gave us a bottle of prosecco on ice.

The hotel had a wedding on so the staff were busy but the staff was friendly and the cocktails were amazing.

After a stressful start, it was a lovely break away.

Clean and comfortable but has the air of a grand dame slightly past her prime. The team were friendly and I get the impression that they are making improvements all the time. Solid 6/10. Parking is easy nearby- several multi stories. Cheapest is college road£6 /24 hours.

Wonderful hospitality service in a small hotel

The stay is wonderful. This small 4 star hotel offers better hotel service than many 4 star hotels and 5 star hotels, I believe. (Before migrating to Scotland from Asia, my friends thought I often go to luxury hotels in Europe for cultural tours. ) By comparing this small 4 star hotel with the “luxury” hotels I stayed in, I strongly recommend visitors to stay in this 4 star hotel if they choose to visit Aberdeen since they offer excellent hospitality.

Apart from appreciating the architecture and the decorations of the stairs (attached the decorations of the stairs I loved), the room cleaning is soooo good that I failed to find any dirt in the room during a 5 night stay. (I admitted that I split the room booking into several bookings)

Great Value!

The Carmelite is an awesome boutique hotel, and their breakfasts are smashing value. The only thing that slightly disappointed me was that my confirmation email said that we'd get a room with a bath tub and we got a room with a shower instead. I don't have a bath at home, so I was looking forward to a soak in a tub, but I can't complain because the price we paid was really good for the room we had.

Average hotel with great little perks

Average room. Fine for a pillow to sleep on at night if your planning not being in the room very much. We live an hour away from aberdeen so ideal for us when we come shopping and need somewhere to stay that is cheap and cheerful. It is very loud at night so qould be worth asking for a room that doesnt face onto the pub outside. However me and my partner are not light sleepers so this did not phase us. Staff were friendly and polite. Place could be done with a freshen up but this is fairly reflected on the price you pay. We will defo be back as we apprieciate the breakfast times and check out, you can have a relaxing morning without having to worry about check out at 10. Check out was at 12 and breakfast was served all morning.

The room, 108, and the en suite were large. It was nice to have a king size bed and a nice tub. But it wasn't well insulated and got a little chilly. The street was very noisy and the windows did nothing to block the sound. Seems like a really cool hotel unless you want quiet time.

Check in is done by the bar staff, they were very friendly and helpful. I had a double room which was a good size. The bathroom was also good, large walk in shower and a roll top bath. The bed wasn’t very comfortable and the pillows very flat.

The hotel is just behind Union Street and 5 minutes from the train station so a good location in that respect BUT it is also very close to bars and pubs which play extremely loud music until the early hours and as a result I got no sleep at all. The road outside is also busy so expect street noise.

I’d been warned about noisy seagulls but no problems with any noise. Split full breakfast between 2 - plenty! 2nd day had afternoon tea for 2 and sat in the box bed table. Very nice. My friend needed lots of help with this and that, e.g. boarding pass printout, and always got service with a smile. I’ve often passed the bar and wanted to enjoy fine single malts but not this time because I had a cold. WiFi signal not great.

The Carmelite was the venue for Sundays Aberdeen-Glasgow Backgammon Club Challenge. A spacious venue with friendly staff - nice buffet provided. The bar area has lots of comfy chairs for tired backgammon players to lounge in...I stayed in the hotel on the Saturday and was impressed by the room - comfortable and clean and a decent size for a single traveler (the price was very good too). Next time we play Aberdeen would be happy to stay there again - and I may even go back sooner just so I can see more of Aberdeens impressive buildings and a museum or 2. Many thanks to the Carmelite for being a great venue ;-)

Disappointing but okay for a crash pad

Requested rooms with baths due to health problems both via hotels.com and a direct email to the hotel, only one guest was given a hotel, and neither guest had hot water during their stay - Due to the briefness of the stay we did not have the time to discuss with the staff - Beds were very hard and not particularly comfortable and there was an awful lot of noise from outside, have emailed the hotel to ask for compensation, but for the price and location I wouldn’t be totally against staying with them again

I usually stay at the Carmelite Hotel when I visit Aberdeen. Being centrally located close to the train and bus station is a definite bonus however the main reason I stay with them is because of how accommodating their staff are. The rooms are always immaculately clean and the beds comfy.

They're thoughtful enough to supply earplugs in case the little noise of the citt centre is a distraction.

I'm actually going back to stay with the. another night!

Very cool place to stay

It's a lovely quirky hotel and I would recommend it to any able bodied person. The only problem is that like most hotels they try to add disabled facilities to an older building. The downstairs disabled/baby changing room is through a pair of double doors with a deep wooden lip. This is extremely difficult to work when you're pushing yourself along. Especially on the way back out. The room was very nice but had no pictures or art work at all which was odd as the rest of the hotel was full of it. The wet room was big but it sloped down to the shower and even though they provided a wet chair it wasn't fixed in so it was OK if you walk and sit safely or had a waterproof wheelchair but unfortunately I had neither. Also the sink was too high for a person in a chair. I spoke to management when I checked out and they said they would look into these things.

Mediocre and noisy stay

This hotel is a little tired looking. The bathroom wasn’t great and the decor old in the room. The main issue was the noise from a bar over the road, which continued passed midnight. If you’re going out for the night in Aberdeen and are looking for a good location just to sleep, this place might be ok. The staff were polite and efficient on the plus side. Otherwise avoid, there are better alternatives in the city for the same price.

Good city centre accomodation.
On check in was met with someone else's details on my booking, got some \"story\" about someone with same name must have stayed before so their system picked their details up. The member of staff wasn't concerned at all but if my address details/phone number etc appear on someone else's booking I would not be happy. With so much emphasis on data protection and the introduction of GDPR at end of this month this to me is a breach of customers data rights.
Room 104 was where we stayed. Noise for city centre location wasn't actually too bad, we know this due to two restless nights sleep. The bed itself is rock hard and very uncomfortable which has led to me having a sore shoulder and my husband having a sore back. The shower while serving purpose was a challenge. The shower area itself was lovely and big however the \"trays\" on the floor are like something you would see on a construction site (metal sheets with holes for drainage). Not securely fastened down and extremely slippery with no option of the old fashioned rubber mat to put down to help this. Weird little blue lights in windows, even with curtains closed the room is still lit up by it, assume on timers as they eventually went off, we couldn't find a way to turn off ourselves.
Room other than that was fine, small but as we have stayed before we knew the size to expect, just be careful entering room 104 if you're put in there as you pretty much fall over the bed when you open the door!!!

The room was fairly well presented, although was very cold on arrival. The heating was on but the radiator was only luke warm. Obviously a problem as a small electric fan heater was in the room which was needed to warm up the room on arrival and on return later in the evening having been out for a meal. The breakfast was a total let down in that having been advised online and by staff on arrival that breakfast was served from 7-11 am, on going for breakfast at 9.30 we were advised that there was no hot food available, only a continental breakfast, which consisted of cereals and cold croissants/pains au chocolate. Hot breakfasts were only available from 10 am when the Chef started. We were the only diners and the staff proceeded to clear away everything before 10 am which meant we could not have anything apart from what we had initially put on our plate, although we were still drinking our coffee.

Nice hotel, not so nice area

Suite was freezing cold, luckily there was a small fan heater and a cozy dressing gown. Loved all the little touches like the sweeties and tea cakes. Disliked the area, didn’t feel safe walking back to the hotel in the dark.

very good location and extremely friendly and help

I have stayed at this hotel twice now. The only negative comment I would make was the room I was in had single glazing and the weather was extremely cold so was quite cold in the room, but the hotel is clean, the staff are extremely helpful and friendly, very professional. The bar area is really comfortable and the food is excellent. Both times we have stayed we have eaten in the Hotel every night which we never do in any of the hotels we have ever stayed in.
The Carmelite would be one of my first choices if staying in Aberdeen overnight, as it is a lovely place to stay if you want a good location, good food and very good staff.

nice hotel good food and central

We were very happy with our twin room - en suite had bath with shower over. Beds very comfortable - hairdryer iron and ironing board in room big plus for me. Also nice toiletries in bathroom. Staff were very attentive without being intrusive. We ate in one night as we were going to a concert and the food was very nice as was the breakfast. Would certainly stay here again .
