I'm not sure about the area. It seemed safe enough. It's right across the street from the beach. And there are restaurants within walking distance, although the one I ate at was a little overpriced. The unit was a 1 bedroom. It was cute. The hot water didn't get warm, so I took a cold shower. I hate cold showers but it did make the heat and humidity a little better. The towels were old and stained and didn't match, which was fine by me, but it seem a little bit ghetto. The bed was old, but not bad. The sheets seemed new, however were very slippery and had come off in the night while I was sleeping. I do toss and turn a lot tho. The AC was good if you close the bedroom door. The curtains were see through, which was weird because the neighbors were trying to peek inside when I first arrived. It was a bit noisy and I often woke up thinking someone was in my room. But overall, not too bad for the very reasonable price. I would probably not stay for more than 1 or 2 nights tho.

I stay here frequently when I come to Dominican to see my other half. I normally ask ahead of time for things like extra pillows or a wine opener, etc., and they always accommodate me, which is lovely. Great communication. The staff are very nice.
Air conditioners in the bedrooms as well as fans on the ceiling to help. Keep it cool.

The pool downstairs is small, but definitely there to cool you off my only suggestion would be some umbrellas, cause it gets pretty scorching hot back there

It was clean there were markets nearby. Parking was easy and it's a gated community within a gated community. The pool was clean and so was the apartment. The fridge and ceiling fan were rusted but that happens next to the ocean. They even had a coffee pot and matches for the stove so I could make coffee. It was a pleasure to stay there.

Obviously, the price is fantastic. Front check-in guys whether it be morning or afternoon are both lovely gentlemen. The beds are terribly hard as well as the couch. Definitely need more than two pillows on the bed, Needs to have for as well as an extra blanket would be nice. Although there is a kitchenette, definitely need a little bit more of the basics like a can opener. Another must is drinking water. Even if you had some at the front check-in for purchase.
It’s lovely how close to the beach it is as well as some nice restaurants like El Carey. Nice little corner store close to that restaurant to pick up whatever it is you need for great prices.

The shower did not work, I had to stoop down under the tap. There was no soap nor shampoo provided. I had to call to get the sink water flow fixed which was still very low after being fixed. I had to call them to fix the kitchen faucet, it took 2 days . Bed was small.

My wife and me are been staying there for over 6 years, some time for over 2 sees. I would highly recommend this place for couples, families and groups . About the staff is fair to saying they are very professional and friendly at same time. In fact I feel in debt with them because after all this years I should have done this review long time ago

Area outside the property was not very clean. Parking was very limited also. No coffee or any breakfast etc was available in the morning. Apartment was clean and attendant Mariano was nice and he was able to speak English.

The rooms are very clean and the bathroom has been upgraded. Very nice tile throughout. However, the beds and the bedding are terrible. The sheets do not stay on the bed and you find yourself on the bare mattress in the middle of the night. This could easily go from a 2 star hotel to a 3 star with mattress and bedding improvements.

Water leaks in bathroom creates puddles. Very dusty fan the second i put it on my allergies kicked in. This is my second time staying at Costambar, the reason is because I love the way it is. Super easy check in, pool always clean and the beach is right in front of the property.

The only issue was they are remodeling the furnitures and the old ones are still inside the apartment and over the stairs.

Please remove them as soon as possible,

Me and my wife love to stay there and definitely coming back.

Honestly didnt expect much but there were roaches every night. I understand its hard given the tropical environment but we were not pre-warned. Bed was uncomfortable. Note the A/C is only in the bedroom. Very close yo playa costambar which was our least favorite beach. Street is quiet as it is a private community but overall, very disappointing.

1. Costambar is a gated community with their own pharmacy, market and taxi station.
2. Walking distance to fantastic beachfront restaurants.
3. Extremely short walk to the beach. Maybe 3 minutes walk.
4. Basically the gentleman at the office is like a conseir.
5. The apartment furniture is outdated but clean and good condition. Honestly we spend our time in the beautiful beach.
6. Teleferico (go around 3pm after cruise people leave and place is empty), Fort and Amber Museum is less than 2 miles driving or taxi.
7. Friendly and happy retirees galore.

Perfect place!

Costambar was easily the best hotel I was in on the entire island! It is in a cash only part of Puerto Plata. The room was exceptionally clean, has cheap drinking water 5 gallon bottles and pumps for your use, the balcony was great, the air conditioning and ceiling fans were perfect, the pool was clear and pleasant, staff were all friendly and it was 24 hour manned security even with the neighborhood already being safe. Uber works here, but many drivers will try to scam for extra money so tell them Uber app pay only and report them in the app. The restaurants are amazing along the beach and way cheaper than in Puerto Plata, the tide is gentile and perfect for swimming, beach chair service under palm shade is great too. I usually like to pay at the hotel, but I am so happy I took the chance on Costambar as it was affordable and after a couple day trips visiting Puerto Plata always found Costambar the perfect more quiet escape from the main busy tourist city. If I ever return to the DR, this is the 1 area and hotel I will for sure return to!

The location is far from the town, so you may be charged a lot for a taxi. Walk out of the property for about 5 minutes to the taxi station, which gives you a little more bargaining ability.
Every single morning (we spent 3 mornings there), the water stopped. We couldn't brush teeth, wash faces, or flush the toilet.
Very bright because there are basically no blinds. So bring a sleeping mask or something.
One of the beds was okay. The other was so old and not maintained that it was completely concave and you could feel the springs VERY well. Probably the worst bed we've slept on, and trust me, we've been to some less than comfy places.

All this being said, the price was not expensive. We get that you \"get what you pay for\" but we want others to go in understanding what they are getting. The lack of water was very unfortunate though.

Good cheap place for a quick stay. Dont expect much, but its a very good option, right across from the beach in a gated community. Very safe.
Not ideal for long stays (no food included, no local area to eat only beach food which is always fish, delicious but sometimes u just want regular breakfast lol) perfect if you are bouncing from town to town (cofresi, costambar, PP, sosua, cabarete)

Besides the building looking good from the outside, the furniture was outdated, big stains on the sofa, very old gas stove and a very small bed in a small bedroom. We felt safe, though, and we enjoyed the residential area and the proximity to local restaurants, stores and the beach, which felt private and very natural, not \"tourist orientated\". It was, all in all, good value for the money.

I went on a business trip. For tourists that look for a chip vacation and local culture it is an ideal place. the beach is a half block away, there are restaurants rirht there. the pharmacy, grocery store, hair salon and store are a few blocks away.
Sterling on the reception was very helpful and kind.
The mattress on my bed was old and bumpy and was advertised as a 2bedroom 2 bathroom apt. They only have 1 bathroom on any number of bedrooms.

Diabolical Behaviour By Manager

On the morning I left, the manager offered to call me a \"cheap taxi\" (no doubt from whom he would receive some commission). I told told him that I had ordered an Uber. He said that Uber was not allowed to collect from Costambar. I said I had confirmation the car was on its way from the App. The manager then called 3 of the local taxi mafia drivers who blocked in my Uber drive and refused to let him leave with me as a passenger.

Absolutely shocking. I will not stay there again. If you wish to, do not tell the manager if you are departing by Uber but walk down to one of the beach bars and order one to pick you up from the street there as I then did.

El recibimiento fue muy agradable, la habitación estaba bastante limpia y fresca. No esperen mobiliario moderno. Todo funciona bien. Aire acondicionado y ventilador de techo excelente pero lleven cobijas para que no mueran de frío como yo. La playa está a escasos metros, muy buena, y hay un mini market a dos cuadras para comprar lo que necesiten. LLEVEN AGUA. Por lo demás fue una buena estadía y volveré!

I did like the closeness to the beach and very friendly helpful staff especially Mariano. The water really wasn't hot when taking a shower and I had to pay 50 pesos for drinking water. I also didn't like when my family visited, only one person could enter the apartment at a time.

The place was fantastic. The check in was quick and easy. A nice five minute walk to nearby restaurants and bars with great food and drinks, locals, and expats. 2 minutes to the beach. Very responsive via WhatsApp. I stayed by a friend for a couple days and when they didn't see me they called to check up on me. The apartment was really comfortable, Everything worked and I have no doubt that if something wasn't working they would've taken care of it quickly. There's a grocery store and dry cleaner nearby. And check out was incredibly simple. Always quiet and safe. There's the rooster in the morning but, being a city guy I actually enjoyed it instead of waking up to an alarm clock and it meant I was really on vacation. I would absolutely stay again and highly recommend to anyone considering staying here.
