Expedia listed this property as 4 star, other internet sites list it as 5 star. Although there may well be parts of the resort that are 4 or 5 star, my \"standard\" room certainly was not.
Broken window in my room, busted furniture, broke tiles, power to my room unstable frequently going out. The resort moved me to a different room that was not much better. The power in the room stayed on, but still damaged woodwork, broken tiles, wires off security alarm on slider door, ceiling fan filthy and worn, ceiling vent caked with filth, just awful. And at the resort's steakhouse restaurant, when diners at the next table went to the salad bar, one of the property's stray cats jumped up on the diner's table eating off the plates, absolutely atrocious.
I complained to Expedia that they misrepresented this resort as 4 star, and that Expedia listed the \"standard\" room as having a separate bedroom, which none of the standard rooms had. Expedia offered to relocate me to different lodging, but they were not willing to relocate me to equivalent lodging of an all-inclusive ocean front resort. All Expedia offered me were hotels that were not all-inclusive, not ocean front, and hotels not resorts. So then i replied to them that since they could not, or would not, relocate me to equivalent lodging, i would accept their alternate offer of financial compensation. After multiple communications to them, they refused to reply. So no relocation and no financial compensation.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Honest Review of Playabachata Spa Resort

I stayed at Playabachata Spa Resort for 6 days and paid about $1600 CAD for two people, and for that price, the experience was absolutely worth it. The resort has a vintage, older style and hasn’t had major upgrades, but the essentials were exactly what I look for: a clean bed, fresh sheets and towels, and a hot shower. The staff were genuinely amazing and made the stay feel welcoming.

What Made the Trip Worth It

My goal wasn’t luxury — it was to escape –15 to –30°C Canadian winter and wake up to sunshine, heat, and the sound of the ocean every morning. For that, this resort delivered perfectly. The atmosphere, beach, and weather made the trip.

Food

I’d rate the food 3 stars. It’s not gourmet, but it was enough to enjoy the stay. At this price point, I wasn’t expecting high-end dining, and I think it’s important to be realistic: you get what you pay for, and the value here is in the location and the getaway.

Final Thoughts

For $1600 for two people, this resort gave me exactly what I needed — a warm, relaxing break from winter with great staff and a comfortable place to unwind. I’d return with the same expectations and enjoy it again.

Alexandria kept my room spotless. The staff overall were very friendly. The staff at the 24hr bar and the evening lobby bar were terrific. The grounds crew did a good job of keeping the beach free of seaweed. The food was good and tasty, and the wait staff was terrific. The nightly entertainment was also very good.

Since we got there was a nightmare
We check out before because they couldn’t solve the problems in the room and we request to be change to another room but they did not do anything about it. We also tried to move to senator and pay the difference but they told us that was nothing available . We are very disappointed about this location. We do not recommend it at all.

The room didn't have a soap dispenser to shower. Leak in the bathroom ceiling. No enough tables to seat for luch, I had to eat standing up at the bar. For check in, I got to the hotel one hour earlier and they did not allow me to wait in the parking lot or reception. The bathtub paint was coming off. I will never go back to this hotel.

Rooms need updating, especially bathrooms. Staff was warm and friendly. Food needs to be covered due to flies, especially in the outside restaurant. Lights went out and took a long time to return, as a resort there should be systems in place to avoid power outages.

The room was overpriced for one night only since we were stranded by our flight cancellation. At first the ocean view room looked comfortable so we left for a while and came back to water leaking from ceiling light fixture all over bathroom vanity and floor. We informed the front desk and they said they would take care of it so we went for supper. We came back several hours later and nothing was done. The towels I used to wipe vanity and floor were still there and the pails I used to catch water were unmoved. In short nothing was done but the leaking stopped on its own. We asked for some kind of discount and we were going home so could not wait. Will we get something? Anthony and Leah Martin

Everything about our stay at Playabachata was excellent from start to finish. The service was outstanding — the staff was friendly, attentive, and always willing to help with a smile. From check-in to check-out, we felt truly welcomed and taken care of.

The resort was clean, beautiful, and well maintained. The food was delicious with great variety, the drinks were always available, and the entertainment kept the atmosphere fun and lively. The beach and pools were amazing, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views.

This was an unforgettable experience, and we couldn’t have asked for a better stay. We would absolutely return and recommend Playabachata to anyone visiting Puerto Plata. Thank you for such a wonderful vacation!

I had selected a \"superior\" room but it wasn't. I requested twice to be transferred to another room, which happened to be even worst. Bathroom wasn't even decent, shower broken and bath tub stained, dirty curtains, electric outlets broken, no wifi, and very uncomfortable room. We had to switch to the Senator side, and enroll in Ultimate Leisure Club to have a real vacation, as we previously planned. I have photos and videos in case you need them.

We got really sick due to the food or water. The room was clean but looks a little outdated. The manager's at the front desk name Grabriella was very nasty when ask for late check out due to my mom being very sick. the staff was very nice. But this resort is a 2 star. The premise was clean and taking care of. The pool is somewhat small and the beach lounge chairs were mostly broken.

Room ceiling was leaking and wet all my clothes and caused me to fall several times. Attention was terrible. I asked for towels and blankets (which I shouldn’t even have needed to ask for, it should have already been provided) and didn’t receive them till hours later. Didn’t restock fridge , which they did before every morning. And you could see the attention difference. I, who am American, received good attention at bars and restaurants. While my husband’s family, who are from the Dominican Rep. would get treated poorly and ignored. So there is preference now? Do we not all pay the same price?

Pros:on a beautiful beach, friendly waiters, maid service and entertainment staff. They tried with fun interactive activities at the pool and at the beach. Grounds are nice and well maintained.

Cons:the food was horrible, contaminated water, our family got severe stomach problems. The plastic cups used are not cleaned properly. The front desk staff was rude, mean and nasty. We asked for a late check for my 78 year mom since she was very sick and they said the would get security to escort her out.
Chairs on the beach were broken, not enough towels, no conditioner in rooms, the rooms were outdated. The electricity went out 4 times we were in pitch darkness. The pool area is outdated and small.

Do not go. I had to leave the Dominican Republic with me girlfriend due to the travel company that Expedia provided me with, Coco Tours. We had gotten picked up from the airport by this man who appeared to be on drugs. A couple minutes into the ride he drove on the wrong side of the road, swerved into other lanes, and was on his phone distracted by phone calls, text messages and youtube. He attempted to make stops at places that he apparently needed to. One was to give money to his \"brother\" who needed food, and he even tried taking us to his \"office\". At this point he kept stopping at random alley ways that were very sketchy, and we were in fear for our lives at this point. My girlfriend and I yelled at him to take us back to the airport. The area was not safe so we decided to fly back to the U.S. He refused to a couple of times but then eventually listened. I tried getting a refund through Expedia, from Playabachata, and Coco Tours, but I was denied any sort of compensation. I am an Army veteran, and my girlfriend is a college student, and dealing with this situation caused us great stress. Do not go through Expedia, do not book through Playabachata, or Coco Tours, as they obviously do not care about our safety, our situation that we were put in, and to provide any sort of refund given our circumstance. The lack of empathy is ridiculous and shows character about all of these organizations.

The hotel was good for the price I paid. The outlets in the room need to be updated. The tub in room 1527 needs to be reglazed. For some weird reason they used paint and that paint was chipping and every-time the showered was used the paint came off and the drain clogged. The buffet for dinner needs more food stations. Long lines for food. But all the staff was helpful & friendly

I had a great time good food and drinks but some drinks were too sweet at the bar I really enjoyed the natural fruit drink in the morning breakfast was my favorite very refreshing and delicious great staff amenities the bed is big clean and comfortable the only issue no white clean towels for 2 days in a row after the house keeper cleaned it. I think the only thing this place has going for itself, is the staff. If you're trying to work and need internet. There is none. Well they say in the lobby, but when u have many people trying to use the bandwidth, not going to happen. The food is subpar. To many people trying to go thru the same line. Takes 30 minutes at times and depends at what time, 30 minutes to get a plate of pasta. The water in my room was dirty for three days. Went to complain and the front desk says there was nothing they could do. Then on check out, they would not let the Uber driver in the gate to pick me up. Instead, i had to walk all the way to the gate with my luggage. I asked if they could take me and my luggage and up to the gate, they stated no, they do not do that. Will never ever stay here again.

Booked this resort on $, get what you pay for. On property for less than 3hrs before going to the front desk to upgrade to The Senator. No wifi in the room was huge, we work from our phones, have children who enjoy tablet time at night.(Wifi issues were stated but never expected the lobby to be the only place we could connect). We had luke warm water which was brown, a busted window above the tub & the room was so small.
Night/day between the resorts, still would not return. Breakfast lacked any protein, able to find bacon 1 time during our stay, hot dogs are NOT sausgage. Part of the pool was closed for reno, no swim up bar. Nightly shows, according to my 7yo daughter weren't appropriate/gross for kids. Buffets are small/minimal offerings & not refilled. No pool/beach bar service. We lost power and water many times.

BEST parts:
BRAULIO was a life saver in ALL the ways, he is reason our trip was enjoyable!!
Kids loved the Nutella pump near the pancakes!
Al a Carte dinners were good, reserving them was easy.
Coffee, ice cream and pizza shops were great between shared amenities.
The sports bar: GREAT service/food. Probably the most memorable of our trip between baseball/football games, had it all and again GREAT staff.
The small outdoor sitdown to the left of the pool had good service and food.
ARIEL was great & treated my kids so well.
There's an area near the cruise ship port with a private beach, shopping, massages, etc NO ONE told us about this.

This resort is the best in Puerto Plata.
I have had the pleasure to go to many of them in the area and Playa Dorada.

This one has everything i mean EVEYHING!!!
Mainom is the perfect Location is 25 minutes from the POP Airport 35 Minutes to Santiago 45 to Las Vegas 30 minutes to Luperon.

The resort is super clean and very very safe. the beach is shared with Senator Resort. sunrises and sunsets are a MUST DO!!!

From Friday to Sunday it get packed with locals and that's is the best part of the trip. you get to share and meet couples and family also with loud kids LOL from the country and it feels good to be around your Dominican Brothers & Sisters.

The Food is amazing fresh all day and delicious and the staff makes you feel at home.

We arrived a couple of hours before check-in and were turned away at the main gate. No other hotel that we have visited in the past has done that. Once we were allowed to check in, it became a hard sell to get us to upgrade to the VIP Senator portion of the resort. Rooms were outdated and while the cleaning staff did their best, the roaches still thrived. Weekends are crowded and there are long lines at the buffet. Flies abound the dining area is all open so this can't be avoided.They claim six restaurants but only two are avilable unless you upgrade to VIP at the Senator. No wi-fi in the rooms, only in the main lobby and spotty at best. We did not even attempt to go into the pool... The only saving grace was the beach but even that could do with a little better maintenace. Rent or buy something that can rake the seaweeds away from the sand. Shelf liquor not of good quality. they were generic bottles with no name brands. My advice is to either renovate or shut down the old part of the resort. Maybe just concentrate on the Senator. It looks nice from the outside but I couldn't speak to its service and dining since we weren't allowed in the other 4 restaurants. Not recommended.

Totally not worth the $304 I payed!! If I could give a 0 stars I would! Too much noise late at night. Food was absolutely disgusting!! Drinks have to be bought and were not worth the price. Staff and people holding the bread with their bare hands. Kitchen utensils were dirty. This place should either be shut down, renovated and hire staff with a sense of hospitality. Room was dirty, toilet was yellow and dirty, bathtub smell disgusting and whole room could benefit from a good renovation since everything is outdated.
