Paul & his team are amazing hosts. The Black Pearl is a lovely place to stay without the hustle and bustle of a big complex. Everything is available from a washing machine, BBQ & reef shoes.
The beach is a 30 second walk accross the road and there is a restaurant and garage right next door for any snacks or drinks if needed.
Paul can provide great recommendations for restaurants and car hire!

We could not fault Paul, Rangi and Nga for their hospitality and assistance during our 2 week visit. Recommendations to local businesses and transport provided to uplift our rental car and their friendliness made for a memorable holiday. Our two week stay at the Black Pearl was so lovely. Paul is an excellent host who takes great care of his property and has great local knowledge. Our room was large and comfortable. The saltwater pool is convenient for days when you don't feel like getting sandy at the beach. There is a dairy/ fuel station/ ice cream shop right next door and Aro's Shipwreck Bar/ Restaurant within walking distance.

My family stayed here for a week and we couldn't be more impressed by our host Paul and his fabulous seaside apartments. The guests ranged from single travellers, couples to families, and The Black Pearl was perfect for all. The rooms were spacious and well stocked, and we were pleasantly surprised with a prepaid local telephone for each unit to use. The location was perfect, with a beautiful beach across the road and a short distance to great snorkelling. There was a small food store next door which had everything we needed, plus a great cafe and ice cream parlor, which made my kids happy. We loved our stay here and would recommend this accommodation to everyone. Simply the best!

The Black Pearl is a great spot to base yourself on Rarotonga - excellently located within walking distance of good bars / restaurants and our favourite beach on the island Aroa Beach. The property is spotlessly clean and the room was a great size with all we needed for our stay. Comfy bed and the ceiling fan meant we could stay cool in the heat and relaxed! Best of all are the hosts Steve and Janelle - who are quick to make you feel welcome. Hope to stay with you again someday!

We really enjoyed our stay at Black Pearl, rooms are well equipped, great swimming pool and the eating guide compiled by Rangi is absolutely fantastic, and we had excellent dining experiences. Rooms are dated, so don't expect modern appliances or tv, however who needs all that when you're holidaying in the beautiful tropical paradise of Rarotonga.

We have stayed there before and like its location. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Units are large and bright and airy. Only thing letting it down is that its getting a little tired now and needs some upgrading in terms of bathrooms/toilets.

Great location for sunsets, snorkeling, relaxing, easy to catch bus. Excellent service and care. Rangi and the team were amazing and made sure we were picked up (in the middle of the night with flower lei!) and taken to our room, and given a surprise and welcome fruit platter. She arranged car hire for us for the day with no fuss. There was some parking for rental vehicles at the front of the property. Next door was a takeaway, petrol station, ice cream and grocery store which was handy. The beach across the road provided good snorkeling at high tide and excellent sunset. About 10 mins walk anti-clockwise direction was an even better snorkeling area in a marine reserve, Beautiful!

Would definitely stay again! The service was great -- they even let us do late checkout so we didn't have to burn time before our flight. The pool area is nice, and the grounds are well thought out. Just to manage expectations, this isn't a luxury hotel, but it's great for a beach vacation. There was a clothing line outside behind our room for hanging wet clothes, and a kitchen as well. Plus, the room was really spacious. It's a particularly great place for families, although we traveled as a couple and had a nice time too.
Just a quick note on wifi -- wifi is expensive, which is standard in the Cook Islands (from what I could tell). Anyway, it ended up giving us a more relaxing stay, but it's best to be prepared!

As I stated in a previous review, I love the Black Pearl at Puaikura. This time was no different. Comfortable, quiet and great staff. Another plus (for me) was running into another returning guest whom I met last year. You cannot go wrong here.

Our room at the Black Pearl was huge and amazing! Do note - this hotel is across the street from the beach, so you won't have direct access, but there is a gorgeous saltwater pool on site. Bigger than many apartments, this was a 1 queen + 1 single bed, for a family of 3. It had a sitting area, large kitchen with microwave and 2 cook tops, indoor dining area, and outdoor patio/deck. The room was very clean and comfortable, reception was very friendly. Clothesline out back was very handy for drying swimsuits, etc.

The villa was adequate for my needs, well furnished and tidy. The grounds were a delight. However the rooster that started at 2 a.m and finished at 5 a.m (every 15 second intervals) was a real deal breaker. I have travelled extensively in the islands and acknowledge that they are part of island life, but this one could not have been more than 5 meters away and just did not let up on either night of my stay.
Also I booked knowing there was a pool as I dont like sand or waves. Sadly however it was taken over for several hours by a diving instructor and 6 learners complete with tanks etc. in what is not a large pool.

Really enjoyed our stay. On the quieter side of raro which suited us perfectly. Lots of beautiful restaurants nearby and staff really helpful and pleasant. They booked tours and restaurant pick ups for us. Would definitely recommend as it’s intimate place to stay where they get to know you personally. The gardens are beautiful and relaxing. Not perfect in terms of everything in room eg: shower not greatest and some windows/doors loose but being on an island makes this something of a charm. Stay here is you want a relaxing intimate stay. Don’t stay here if you are picky on everything being perfect in your room and rely on WiFi 24/7. We would definitely come back here as it suited us perfectly

Great quiet retreat.
My third stay at The Black Pearl at Puiakura. Improvements are always happening. It just takes time (remember where you are). As usual beautiful sunsets across the road over the lagoon. Owner Jane and Rangi, Nga and Johnny are their usual helpful selves. Will definitely stay here again and again.

A great little hotel which is directly accross the road from a beautiful white sandy beach. The hotel is small and gives you a chance to relax without having lots of people around. Awesome pool which was very popular with all the guests, we were in there alot when it was hot! Lovely tropical gardens surround the hotel and this makes it completely private from the road. Staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and responded to any requests we had promptly. We arrived on a late flight and our room was already for us to immediately sleep. They had also put together a yummy fruit platter for breakfast for us.

Late arrival meant no welcome but room was ready with minimal provisions in fridge. Dogs barking, roosters crowing ,and road noise were an issue. During the stay thin walls meant other guests were audible. Staff helpful and pleasant . Pool clean and surrounds well kept.

Loved my stay. Everything was sorted for my late arrival, welcomed by a plate of fresh sluced fruit in the fridge. The location is ideal for snorkelling, with the marine reserve about one kilometre to the east. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Good choice in terms of location and quality of self-catering accommodation.

Ideally situated on the Sunset Coast for exploring beaches restaurants and activities away from the busier South coast. Excellent swimming pool and friendly staff. Proprietor very 'on to it' in terms of addressing any issues. Can be a little noisy if you bare in unit near the road although having said that a quieter room at the back does not take you away from the local roosters who have difficulty telling the time and den to start the morning chorus at all hours this can happen snywhere on Rarotonga the hotel provides foam earplugs free of charge if farm animal noises do interfere with your sleep.

We stayed 9 nights at the Black Pearl. Transfer from the airport was arranged and successful although rather expensive. We used the bus service for the first 4 days then hired a rental car which gave us more scope for exploring. Our main focus this trip was to chill out and relax and the resort was ideal for that.

We booked into the Black Pearl at the last minute with very little research when we decided to extend our stay in Rarotonga and the resort where we were staying had already booked out our room. Having said that, we were pleasantly surprised at the comfort and beauty of the facility and happy with our choice to stay here. One downside was the road noise - the resort is across the street from the beach and traffic goes by at all hours of the day and night.

My second stay at The Black Pearl. Very pleased to say that the improvements to the 'Pearl' are coming along at a great \"coconut time\" pace. Lovely new decor in some units, with remaining units to follow. Decking around pool and on some patios (all will get same treatment) looks great. As always the lovely Jane and her fantastic staff couldn't do enough for you.

Large room and wonderful to be able to cook. Food on the island is expensive and since we did not rent a car or scooter- it would have been a hassle to eat out for all of our meals. The hotel grounds are lovely and they had a great pool and patio and barbecue etc. The location is great - very central. We loved the dive shop next door - Adventure Cook Islands.

The black pearl is a motel style gem on the sunset side of Rarotonga. It is across the road from the beach, literally a stones throw from white sand heaven.
Because it is motel style we had a twin gas cooker, decent size refrigerator, microwave, kettle, toaster, pots, pans cutlery tea towels etc. I didn't have to go out and find breakfast every morning. Get up late and rattle up whatever you fancy, perfect. (Local supermarkets have loads)
They provide bath towel and beach towels. They have rock shoes you can borrow and masks and snorkels and even umbrellas. You really could turn up in your shorts and jandels. Jane gave flawless advice on the best places to eat and the bar down the road (5 minutes on foot, along the beach) is rated by CNN as No. 3 in the world for beach sunset bars.
