The staff , Sophie and Amy(? Receptionist )were excellent, and could not be faulted, especially when the management pushed against the already agreed fried breakfast, and called the receptionist in from home to tell me I only had access to a ‘continental’ breakfast rather than a cooked one.

I offered to discuss the issue directly with the management, but they still pushed and I had to show a screenshot of the messages I had received from the hotel indicating a cooked breakfast was included. Again, this was via the unfortunate receptionist, who had returned to the hotel, and I assume would not be paid.

In the end it was reluctantly agreed, to allow my partner and me to have the expected cooked food.

The breakfast was excellent- thank you Sophie.

As an aside the single pillows were rock hard and at 0300 we were serenaded by a nearby rookery

It’s okay for a night or a quick nap.

The staff were friendly and accommodating but the quality of the room wasn’t great at all, sadly.

The bed was very old, mattress was very soft and you could feel the springs - I was very lucky not to put my back out on the two nights I stayed. The whole hotel needs a refresh. The bathroom was tired, the water system was struggling at times and making some very odd sounds. Carpet wasn’t cleaned and needed replacing. The continental breakfast wasn’t appealing so me and my wife decided to drive out and find a service station to have some breakfast 15 mins drive out.

Not a good place to stay

The whole place looked tired and unloved, the room was unclean with coffee stains up the doors paintwork old, chipped and in need of attention. The bathroom was tiny. And dirty. Although the towels were fresh. In short a far cry from its advert. Didn’t. Have a clue regarding the food it was awful. Will never stay again. But the staff were great.

This is a cheap hotel in the middle of sheerness. No it’s not five star but service was excellent. Can’t remember the last time a staff member showed you to the room. Would definitely stay again.

Lady on reception when we checked in was very helpful. The room was VERY small - difficult to move around. We had no hot water the first morning but this was rectified during the day. Our booking included continental breakfast but we ended up only having toast after the first morning as it wasn't very nice & limited choice which was the same every day.

Very nice hotel for what I needed. The guy who checked me in also did the bar and cooked my evening meal, very polite chap. Room was a bit dated but clean as was the bathroom. Bed was ok but wouldn’t want to sleep in it every night. The shower could do with an update. Continental breakfast did the job. Overall I would stay again but I think this hotel has so much potential and is probably a work in progress.

The room required refurbishment, there was no blind in the bathroom over looking the high street the extractor fan was noisy and there was no hot water in the sink and the noise from the tap was not pleasant. The mattress on the bed was knackered and required replacing putting a mattress topper on does not resolve the issue. A terrible nights rest due to the poor mattress.

The property badly needed updating, the room was well below what you'd expect from a 3* hotel and the facilities were poor. The bed headrest had been repaired with electrical tape, the fixtures and fittings were old and in poor condition and the whole place looked like it needed to be refitted. The only positive was the price but on reflection you get what you pay for. I wouldn't stay again and wouldn't reccomend.

The room to start with had a really bad smell , I had to go and buy some febreeze to spray the room , the carpet had stains all over it and there was thick dust in the corners of the room. Toilet paper was cheap and could see your hand threw it, the bed was not comfy and had no spare pillows also the lights around the mirror did not work so was getting ready in the dark and overall the hotel itself is very out dated

O.k. with room for improvement

Let us start with the positives: The bed was one of the most comfortable ones we had slept in away from home, the staff was friendly and helpful, the meals we purchased were freshly prepared and excellent. Cleanliness was acceptable, but could be improved.
Now the \"niggles\": The hotel is clearly in need of refurbishment. The room advertised as \"deluxe\" clearly was not. Shortcomings ranged from dangerous, such as the lack of a non-slip mat in a slippery bath, to annoying, such as the lack of racks to dry towels.
Here is a short list of other ones: No hooks to hang up potentially wet outdoor clothing, only 5 hangers in a massive wardrobe, no hand towels provided, a non-functioning TV because of a defect aerial connection, old-fashioned bath/ shower mixer taps which dripped and left limescale deposits in the bath.
A negative outside the hotel's control was the location of our room no.10 which faced the Eastchurch main street with a pub directly opposite. Friday night was noisy, Saturday night even more so with loud singing up to 1 a.m. on Sunday morning.
During the hours advertised there was someone on the premises all the time, but the hotel was clearly run on a shoestring and staff were often difficult to find. Another fact worth mentioning is that a continental breakfast was included in the price of the booking, but we were not aware of this fact, nor were the staff when we first asked, until they looked at the booking.

Beds need replacing

We stayed in the family room avoid if you want the window open as its right above the pub outside area and very noisy the pillows and the beds themselves are very old and uncomfortable should have been changed years ago springs are all collapsed and noisy at every move would i stay here again would i recomend to anyone else no i wouldnt

Was worried when i read the reviews but found our room clean, staff friendly, id say theyve given the place some tlc, we slept well but wouldve liked pillow protectors on pillows and also the mattress had a duvet folded on top so could do with a new one but saying that had great nights sleep. Perfect hotel for 'Chase the Sun' event

The hotel was excellent value for money, clean, and comfortable and the staff were all friendly.

I booked the hotel as I had entered 'Chase the Sun' and needed somewhere local for the early start on the Saturday morning. The hotel is roughly 4 miles from the start line and with 24hr access was perfect for family who had travelled with me.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, stayed in room 16 nice size,but no heating was on and felt chilly in the room,the bed was classed as a king-size its more a small double.
The bathroom was a nice size with a jacuzzi bath but the jacuzzi wasn't working which wasn't a problem for me, there was tea and coffee facilities in the room ,there was no noise from the pub that i heard .
Would i syay again probably as it was cheap and cheerful.

The hotel itself seemed ok but we were only there one night and didnt spend a lot of time there. The bed sheets were clean but the room itself wasnt. Perfectly serviceable no frills accommodation

Given previous reviews, I was pleasantly surprised by our stay at the Shurland. Yes, the room was basic and a bit tired but it was perfectly serviceable and the staff were very pleasant, attentive and helpful. Our ensuite was spotless, and bedding and towels were clean and fresh. Our room faced the road (with a view of the castle pub) so there was quite a bit of noise from the street, but this was not the fault of the hotel. We can't comment on breakfast (we didn't eat in the hotel) nor the spa or gym (these facilities were closed during our stay). If you're looking for a luxe stay, The Shurland is probably not the venue for you - but as a place to sleep, it was perfectly fine!

Wasn’t as bad as other reviews made out. A pleasant chap on reception, although communication was a little tricky, we got there through a bit of charades, the room was dated and there’s no bar/restaurant as advertised. In our room the Tv was fixed to the wall where you couldn’t watch it from the bed. Towels smelt musty. A budget hotel, ok for an overnight stay if on business. I’d be well upset if I was on holiday!!

Had used this hotel previous and had a good stay. Arrived this time, checked in and went to room and very quickly turned around and checked out. Room was dirty and grubby. There was only one pillow on a double bed. didn't do a full inspection as i saw enough straight away. went back to reception and aired my complaint to be greeted with \"oh Ok then\" no apology, no trying to sort the issue or offer of a different room. He really didn't care. I since put a complaint in via Hotels.com and asked for a refund as never stayed as it was that bad and they haven't been helpful either.

Worst hotel in the country (Black Mould)

This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at by far. Black mold on the windows of the honeymoon suite, Jacuzzi bath that is broken. Very squeaky four poster bed. When highlighting to the manager the cleaning staff became abusive. The receiption staff tried to charge 5 pounds per person for breakfast which was included in booking. There is no hot food available for breakfast only stale crumpets and muffins, Dirty glasses and cutlery. The manager stated the locals are happy with the condition of the rooms which will explain what sort of people stay and work at this hotel. Avoid at all costs if you want a clean healthy night stay. Avoid taking your children here as it would be damaging to there health and given the abusive behaviour from the cleaners when trying to speak with manager it would not be suitable for a yound child to see or hear that behaviour from an adult. Due to Corona virus you would think there are measures in place to ensure the hygeine is the top priority. Hotels have refused to give a refund

The hotel room and the staff were great. However, the attached restaurant didn’t have any food so was shut. The diners around the place were shut on a Tuesday or took cash only. In the end I bought a jar of Nutella and bread to make dinner. The gym while functional was very dated. The general impression I got was that sheerness is a very low income area.

we stayed in the same room (3) last October so most of these observations are the same as then. Bathroom, mould in shower tray, handle missing from inside of shower door, toile roll holder broken just a screw sticking out, towel rail would be nice to be able to reuse towels cupboard door needs replaced, Bedroom, mirror light not working, only one bed side cabinet, no bed side lights. mismatched cups, walls full of holes, large fan was supplied but it was filthy, and lack of sockets, bedding was clean but marked, tv remote not working tv held in cabinet with 4 exposed screws, door closers need adjustment need to be superman to open the door. Bar, prices are extortionate and canned beer (john smiths) same round over the road (draught john smiths) £5 cheaper, breakfast buffet was well stocked unlike last October, but still no chef we have family experience of four visits over the past 3 years and there as never been a chef, so no cooked breakfast available. in the early morning before doors are opened there is a musty smell. The purpose of our visits was to see family, and this visit a bereavement so we no longer need to visit. Thank goodness.

Don’t even £50 would be expensive!

The initial welcome and check-in was underwhelming. No real service, enthusiasm or seemed interest.
We arrived later than we’d hoped, to be told the restaurant shut at 8, so wouldn’t be able to get food. Told when breakfast was & about 24hr access door as reception would be shut.
Got back to room after being out, to find bed was broken on one side. No one around to mention it too, so slept at opposite end of bed, so feet were at the head board, also on the downward slope (rather than head). Following morning, no one was in the restaurant to greet & no cooked food was on offer. The continental breakfast consisted of a warm/cold drink options, yogurt, toast (brown or white), ham &/or cheese triangle…that looked sweaty or not fresh. The toaster doesn’t toast. The coffee was weak, a yogurt had mould inside the seal upon opening. When explaining/ complaining to the maitre de/ receptionist about dirty bowls and the breakfast there was no apology, a short response which was followed by muttering under his breath. When complaint was then officially given for room & breakfast (with photos), and asked if we could be moved to another room, we were informed that he had to talk to his manager. When we returned later that morning we were told we had to email the manager, I then asked for the email address & was told to use the hotel address to raise complaints.
We were on the island for a wedding & were not the only one to have a negative experience!!

Lacking basic housekeeping

Stayed 2 nights with a friend for a wedding on the island.
I really wanted the bad reviews to be wrong and to redress the balance but sadly not.
Hanging baskets go there to die clearly, as there are 8 or more of them hanging from rusty hangers outside, just by taking them down the hotel would look a bit better!!
Check in was at 2. But on arrival at 2.10 the room was not ready and was still being “cleaned”.
We told the man on reception that it wasn’t a problem and that we would come back later after getting a bite to eat.
We returned around 5 pm to the man on reception and the man from the gym watch my friend and 1 struggle through the door with suitcases and wedding attire and various bags.
We were given no instructions just handed a key, room 18.
The bedding was crisp and clean, but that’s as far as it went on the positive.
An old kettle base, hardwired into the wall was left hanging and another kettle with base was placed next to it.
Inside drawers littered with used cotton wool, grit, dust etc, had to clean before we could put our clothes in.
Carpet stained, blur toothpaste on wall, questionable brown stain on wall, bath panel disintegrated, panel missing from wardrobe, no information book, no idea what time breakfast was, radiator rusted, taps spin around independently and drip constantly, water damage everywhere.
If you are having the very basic breakfast, leave plenty of time as the archaic toaster takes forever.

I suppose you get what you pay for. This place was cheap and you don't really get much for the price. The rooms need a lot of work (old furniture, bathrooms from the 80's, TV's don't work etc.). It wasn't helped by the fact that they didn't have a chef so the only restaurant in town was therefore shut and breakfast was continental only. The pub over the road (Castle Inn) was good though and the barman in the hotel bar was nice.

Terrible place to stay, would not recommend
The hotel was terrible and very dated, the beds were so awful it gave me back ache, not to mention I felt that I wasn't the only living in the room.
BOTH of my rooms where noisy in need of some major repairs there was mould in the bathrooms and just overall a bad hotel room even if it's for one night, I would not recommend! sleeping in the car it would have been better.
Moved hotel and lost money but at least got some sleep.

Rowdy guests, unclean room, liar staff

Anti social guests and poor room, booked a room for a wedding on the 5th of March, we came in and dropped off our bags before leaving to go back out (about 10mins), the room smelt of smoke & there was a sweet wrapper from the previous guest on the side. My partner had a bad feeling about the room so luckily he stopped drinking. When we got back we were met at the door by a girl shouting down the phone, she followed us round the 24 access door and we were met with another male guest. We went into our room & the guy said at least you're not in room 3 it stinks of sewage - the 2 guests then decided to have a screaming match as they had lost their room key & there were no staff on site to assist. This went on for about 20minutes and got louder & more aggressive until we decided to leave before it became unsafe. We quickly bundled our stuff in bags and hurried to the car as to not bump into them. We were not able to leave the key on the reception desk or in the room for fear that our room would be accessed & we would be blamed for any damage. We returned in the morning (did not have our breakfast which was included) & complained to the member of staff who advised that there were several complaints about it, there was also a road sign outside that had been smashed to bits, we requested a refund & she asked the manager Sasha to call us. The manager called & advised that if we wanted a refund we would need to go through hotels.com – we did & when they contacted the hotel they only au

As a family we decided to use this hotel regardless of it’s reviews as we thought that surely it couldn’t be that bad, well it was. We were made to feel like we were an inconvenience and some of the staff never even smiled. They told us that the continental breakfast was not included when it clearly states it on the website that it is and it was on our confirmation email too. One of the guests found a hair in their breakfast. Staff were hard to find when you needed them. The bin in the bedroom had a face mask in it as well as other bits of rubbish. Overall not a good experience and we will definitely not be booking there again.

I always travel with a multitool so was able to carry out minor repairs in the room, like toilet roll holder hanging off the wall as was the coat hanger. The toilet brush was absolutely disgusting. Continental breakfast was a joke cereal and yoghurt, bread did eventually appear to make toast, hot water for teas and coffee was supplied in a vacuum pump pot which was just luke warm. cutlery and crockery were dirty. needs a good sorting out and and some organising introduced, plus sort out the tea and coffee. for the two nights we stayed there was no chef so no evening meals.The final straw the bar closed at 8pm.

I would not go back to this hotel. Paid for breakfast but was told no chef so continental breakfast offered very basic and when I asked a member of the staff in the restaurant If I could have a glass of water. She didn't answer just looked at me with out saying anything, no smile nothing. She did get me the water but she didn't want to. Hairs in bath very poor and outdated room. We didn't sleep well at all as domestic violence was going on in the next room and the other side someone coughing all night. Also the room was above a loud boiler which went off every 10 minutes. We felt very uncomfortable staying in this hotel and couldn't wait to leave

Terrible place to stay, would not recommend

The hotel was terrible and very dated, the beds were so awful it gave me bruises, there was mould in the bathrooms and just overall a bad hotel room even if it's for one night, I would not recommend!

A little bit run down and quirky. Could barely use he sink as it was small and there was a shelf above it. Headboard on bed was a single headboard but bed was double. Breakfast was not worth getting up fo! A piece of cheese and a slice of ham with toast!
