Old fashioned hotel- but really LOVELY, posh looking room, amazing hot tub style bath (executive suite), supplied biscuits, hot drinks in room. Soft towels, toiletries, crisp fresh linen, lovely sea views. Lift is small/ lots of random steps/ slopes, but just had the best time. If parking you MUST buy a permit online- it’s £5/6 per day, but can park literally outside. Will 100% stay many more times

The room felt tired and there were damp issues. The tea and coffee tray was very limited, with only two milk portions provided, meaning you could only have one drink each. Downstairs, there was a strong smell that seemed to be either damp or from the air conditioning. The photos showing a bright conservatory are misleading, as it was in need of a thorough clean both inside and out.

On the positive side, the staff gave a warm and friendly welcome, and there was a good selection available at breakfast. The location is excellent, very close to the Cliffs Pavilion, and our room had a lovely sea view.

Great views out to sea. Handy for cliffs pavilion.

Place is very tired and need of some serious refit. I haven't seen separate hot and cold basin taps in hotels for years.
Shower performance very poor. restaurant menu extremely limited- decided to go out. I guess it was very nice 20-30 years ago!

Room was a bit tired but clean. Big issue was no hot water and it appears from the number of people complaining at Reception, that this is a hotel wide issue. Reception staff told us that as its an old building the hot water comes on after running all hot taps in the bathroom for 15 mins. We tried this and the 'hot' water was still running freezing cold. This 'advice' was given to every guest we heard asking about the hot water, so the water wastage at this hotel must be an incredibly large amount. We also wondered if the catering staff had access to hot water to wash gheir hands. With this in mind we decided not to eat there and checked out before 8am to get home to eat and have a hot shower.
It's a lovely building in a great location, so i really hope they get the water issue sorted.

The property was adequate for our purposes. I think they could have a simpler method for paying for car parking as you had to download an app and several customers had problems with this method and a member of staff had to sort it out on their own account for us. Breakfast was good.

The worst hotel experience I have ever had, I was in Southend for a family wedding checked in about 4 pm git to the room tv remote was barely working, went out for a late lunch, came back for a shower no hot water available, so due to time constrictions just got changed and went to the reception got back at 1am hotel locked took 20 minutes until the night porter arrived to let us in settled in for the night got up this morning again absolutely no hot water available for either a bath or shower packed went to check out talking to other guests in the way downstairs all found the same no hot water and absolutely no explanation got to reception no sign of any staff apart from a dining waitress who told us breakfast wouldn’t be available and she had no idea where the receptionist was myself and other guests just left our room keys on reception desk and left absolutely disgusted never again.

A Nightmare

A disaster.
Had booked for 2 nights. But moved to another hotel for the second night.
The Muthu hotel should not have been open.
They knew they had a plumbing problem,which meant there was no hot water.
The room was old and needed renovation.
The double bed had a thin sprung mattress that must have been so old that the springs moved in all directions.
The so called clothes closet, which also acted as a storage cupboard only had three coat hangers for a family room.

The upstairs corridors and stairs had obviously not been vacuumed the day we were there.

My experience at this hotel was unfortunately disappointing, especially given that I had booked a suite three months in advance. Upon checking in at 8:45pm, I was given a room that was clearly not the suite I had paid for. When I went back down to query it, I was told that due to a wedding, they had prioritised giving the suite to someone else. No prior warning, no communication — just an apology and a downgrade to an “executive room”, which was a lower standard.

While the hotel staff said they would refund the difference, what was most frustrating is that had I known in advance, I could have booked a suite elsewhere.

The room itself was spacious and had sea view windows, but they were so dirty that it completely ruined the view. The bathroom was far from ‘executive’ — the shower unit was tiny, though there was a jet bath (a nice touch), but the overall décor was dated and worn.

Also, do not pay extra for breakfast — it was really poor. Coffee came from an urn and was almost undrinkable, and the rest of the food was very basic and budget-quality. Eat elsewhere if you can.

However, I must say Expedia were amazing — they listened to my complaint and offered a small but reasonable credit refund, which was excellent service and very much appreciated.

Overall, this was a hotel experience I’d rather forget. If you do stay here, keep your expectations low — or you’re likely to be disappointed.

I’d probably give it a swerve

The experience at this hotel wasn’t great. The staff were friendly but our room didn’t have any toiletries or iron/ironing board in it despite pamphlets to the contrary. I phoned down to reception and the toiletries were provided, the hot water in the shower didn’t seem to work, another call to reception and we were told to keep the hot tap in the sink and the shower running at the same time for 10 minutes before it gets hot, which worked but it such an awful waste of water during this drought of a summer. By the time I noticed the iron was missing I lacked the motivation to make another call to reception. The sheets had some rather nasty looking stains on them, as did the sofa in receptions. There was loud music coming from somewhere in the hotel until about 3.30am which made for a terrible nights sleep, not to mention the noisy pigeon population that had made the dingy courtyard our frosted windows looked out upon, another source of unwanted sound. Floorboards above very creaky and thin walls meant it was very easy to hear doors slamming shut in the morning.

Great staff make up for a lacklustre stay

The hotel appears to have a long standing issue with the hot water, so much so that there was a notice on the toilet cistern saying so. Both the shower and hot watertap must be run at the same time. If we knew we wouldn't have booked. The walls are thin, we could hear other residents in the wee small hours, and there was a persistent and intermittent scratching through the night which I suspect was a rodent. The last time I looked at the clock it was 3am. I have never had to write a review like this before, however it's fair to say you get what you pay for.

Issue with hot water. Sometimes had to wait a long time before water heated up. Once when showering, the water went cold in the middle of the shower. Also sink wasn't very broad; each time I washed my face, water dripped from my chin on to the floor which I then had to clean up

Our room looked literally NOTHING like the charming photo - we had a single and a double bed in a quite old fashioned room. No air con. Heat blasting in the windows. Which opened, so that's good! Still nice though. Very old fashioned and charming. Oh god and the elevator is VERY small, so if you dislike small spaces... but the bar and bar staff rock! And front desk guy was lovely.

The hotel overal was okey, nice family room, good location for shopping, walkable to the sea site. The minus was the hot water which you have to wait like 10 mins and you have to constantly run water to get warm/hot, which in mine opinion its waste of the water and the boiler should be change at that stage. At the front of the reception we have slight struggle to get hold as was no one at the desk and no ring bell or anything to be able get attention.
By the way we didn't hear when we check out from the receptionist words \" I hope we see you again\", instead we heard \" okey, bye\" which put us off more to the hotel.

This hotel was extremely disappointing. The room was dirty, poorly maintained, and felt very rundown. Pigeons could be heard cooing right outside the window early in the morning — no netting or barriers to prevent them.

The shower only worked if I turned on both the sink and shower taps at the same time, which is unacceptable. No bath mat made the floor slippery and unsafe. Towels were limited and the in-room refreshments were poor — no milk and out-of-date biscuits.

The one positive was the receptionist, Kieran. He was polite, professional, and helpful. I sincerely hope he moves on in hospitality, away from this establishment.

I paid over £100 for one night and expected at least basic standards. Unfortunately, this place failed on almost every level. I won’t be returning.

Room was small even for a compact double, lots of cracked/chipped paintwork, stains on the walls, carpets etc. Hot water only worked intermittently so having a shower in the morning was difficult. Noisy corridors and could hear everything from other rooms, as well as loads of pigeons outside the window (and the sight of loads of dead ones on the floor around it). Noisy fan in the bathroom, shower was small. Staff were alright, some friendlier than others. The night porter was polite and nice, check in lady was a little terse about the parking but was okay. Overall not worth the money we paid, but convenient location for what we needed it for.

The rooms do not look like the photograph.
We left straight away - the bed was old and decoration was poor and looked like under repair.
We wanted hot water for a shower and they said you have to run the water for 20 mins in order to get hot water!
I suggested to hotels.com to remove this property.

A Typically British Seaside Hotel

A friend and I had a lovely stay at this Westcliff Hotel having enjoyed an evening at the theatre nearby. Room had a sea view, twin beds were comfortable, breakfast was good, bar service was good, staff lovely and friendly. Bedding and towels were clean, toiletries were provided, walk in shower nice and hot. Sadly though like a lot of our seaside hotels, it is very 'tired' and needs some refurbishment. Have stayed here before and would stay again - will remember my plug for charger next time as sockets not updated with USB connections!

Cleanliness was lacking! Smears down side of wardrobe, bathroom with mould, although the seaview was lovely the outside of windows were so dirty you couldnt see out very well. We found a beer bottle lid on the floor as soon as we walked in, so it was obviously not cleaned well between customers!
The restaurant is very expensive compared to the quality of the food, would recommend if you do stay you eat elsewhere.
Dated decor, paintwork chipped on walls.
Just overall feels like this hotel is trying to be something its not! Due to the dirty scruffy feel we would not recommend and unfortunately wouldnt stay again, which is disappointing due to its close location to beach, town and cliff pavillion

Friendly staff and good location. Nearby restaurants and within walking distance of adventure island. The family room has two separate bedrooms which is great. Slight downsides is the room was a bit tired and had slight damp smell. Also there is no blind in bathroom although the glass is obscured you would be able to see through the window from the houses across the street at night.

We enjoyed our stay at Westcliff Hotel.
On arrival your receptionist helped with the on street parking as we were having a problem with the Ringo app.
Staff were helpful and curteous.
Our room was clean apart from black mould around the sink and edges of bath.
The top of the wardrobe was very dusty. We were going to put our suitcase there.
It would be nice to have more compimenary milk and coffee provided.

Had to wait ages for someone at reception to turn up, then she went off to help another customer. Lift was not working, so lucky only had to go up one set of stairs. Room was ok at first look, but shower had black mould. Hairs in the bed, pillows were old and floppy, mattress was so soft, you sank into it to the point of back and neck ache the next morning. Carpet had paint stains on it. Floors creaked badly, heard upstairs walking all night. Fire door had big gap of 25mm underneath. Radiator didnt work properly-either too hot or too cold- very noisy. Ambient music played throughout till late, could be heard over tv in room. Didn't bother to stay for breakfast as did not feel the need to be let down anymore. Great location, staff polite enough when there.

Hotel should be shutdown. Receptionists and Manager have no idea about customer service.
Bed was rock solid. Still in pain 2 weeks after being home.
Radiator screamed at you and sounded like it was going to explode.
Bathroom was sweaty but bedroom was cold enough to keep drinks at fridge temperature.
Breakfast I'm so glad I didn't pay for, £89 for 4 days is how much they charge for breakfast. Which is ridiculous with the amount of cafes and pubs that serve breakfast in the area

Good but needs simple improvements

Overall an okay stay, but let down in two areas. First I always book somewhere with a gym to keep fit whilst I travel. The gym at Muthu is a dark cupboard under the stairs where the staff have to walk through to check cctv and other things. It’s a mess to be honest.
Second, and only something I noticed whilst leaving on the last day. The cleaning team prepare the fresh sheets and towels for each room before departure time and leave them on the floor outside each room. Always great to find out that the sheets you’ve been sleeping in have probably been sat on the carpet in the corridor 🙃

Nice hotel in good location. We stayed here so we could take kids to adventure island. Stayed at radison blue last time which was twice the price and run down in comparison. Location not quiet as good but this stay was much more enjoyable. I would recommend if planning to go to adventure island. Short work and very friendly staff

To begin with, I was happy with the service staff when checking in.
However, the rooms have no real soundproof, everything creaks and bangs when being walked on. You can hear people above snoring, talking, and generally moving around.
Some of the guests were loud and disrespectful late at night.

The room decor and cleanliness was pretty good, but it's an old dated building that needs some investment desperately.
To top off an unpleasant stay, the fire alarm went off at 3.20am
No real apologies or offer of any compensation for a real inconvenience for a one night stay.

I simply couldn't sleep, which is the whole point of booking a hotel. Needless to say, I checked out at 5.40am and drove home.
I would not recommend this hotel, or stay here again!

Good for a no frills stay

This is a well placed hotel with great access to the beach. Parking was easy and check in fine. I was disappointed with the 'gym'. Cardio equipment did not have power, there was an abandoned piece of equipment and I dont think anyone should work out there alone, no one would know you were there. The room was comfortable although everytime I used water, there was a loud noise from what I think was a water tank? Decor felt quite modern. Restaurant staff were super polite and it was clean.

on the first night the room 210 was dirty i complain so second night they moved me into room 407 next to boiler room terrible lots of noise room was freezing, when i asjed fir Manager young lady saud not here till monday was asking for a refund for the first night terrible, nd i had my grandaughter with me, not good €283 pounds for 2 nights terrible

Friendly check in room was nice the addition of a floor fan a nice touch the only downer was that they ran out of brown sauce for breakfast (if could think why didn't someone go to the shops and get a bottle)but otherwise a nice stay
