My partner and I were very impressed with both how nice the establishment was, and how accommodating the staff were. This place was a gem and for a very affordable price. We recommend it for all travellers but especially couples on a romantic getaway.

We paid nearly £1400 for 2 night’s’ accomodation at the 3 bedroom cottage and it was a rip-off. The cottage was tiny : 3 bedrooms but only one toilet. The worst was this: the cottage reeked of musty smell, like when one enters an old antique shop. Of course we were not expecting modern decor, but the smell of old wood and old furniture in that 3 days were unbearable we stayed out as much as possible. It made us question if the blankets draping over the sofa were cleaned. It was just a very uncomfortable experience. Some of us had to do work calls but phone lines don’t work while in the premises. We couldn’t even call for taxis, “because Cornish houses were built long ago”, we were told. We asked for a change of rooms but were told all rooms were booked up and they were all the same, none of the rooms has good phone reception. The check in experience was positive but I wish some of the effort could have been placed into making the place smell less musty and more liveable. The cottage has a small kitchenette and a dining table but it was so poorly ventilated that cooking fumes would stay on the furniture. We bought groceries to make simple breakfast but left all the produce there. We will not go again & would NOT recommend the cottage.

Unbelievably hot room on a mild spring day. Our room was small, but clearly inadequately ventilated as even with the provided Dyson fan permanently on full blast and the window open the room was stiflingly hot on a day that didn’t exceed 16 degrees.

All the staff were wonderful and accommodating and very polite and helped with all of our requests with a smile. We didn’t eat at the hotel but we did enjoy some drinks at the bar and for a small hotel, it was well stocked! Easy to find and quiet, would happily stay again.

We had an amazing stay in the 3 bedroom cottage in Penzance. Jonathan was amazing to deal with and the room was beyond spectacular! Worth every penny. We only stayed the one night for my friends 60th Birthday. We wanted to go to see the St Michaels Mount, which we did walk to but it was closed on Saturday’s! Jonathan offered other options and was helpful. We dined there as well and the food was delicious and service was first class. I cannot say enough about how much we loved our stay. Next time I will book for a longer stay!

We had a lovely weekend stay. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Room was quirky and just perfect, warm, cosy with bundles of character. Room was very well kitted out from chargers, slippers, robes and the complimentary toiletries and tea making facilities of excellent quality. No noise at night, bed was really comfortable and the lavender pillow spray was much appreciated. We both slept like babies.
Breakfast was hot and the full English wasn't swimming in greese and eggs perfect.
Our only negative was that the evening menu was limited and not to everyones taste, so the second evening we opted to eat out. They would benefit from a weekly rotating menu for variety. Otherwise excellent and we would stay again in the future and recomend to our family and friends.

Stayed in the Chapel Suite (Luxury Suite) for 2 nights and we were hugely disappointed with our experience. The room is on the first floor and overlooks the main road, Chapel Street which is very noisy in early mornings as it is a one-way street and the windows in the living area aren’t double-glazed or even glazed at all as you can hear pretty much any conversation, coughs, or car noises that passes throughout the day. In addition, the room floor is super squeaky and all we could hear at night are the stumping noises from the floor above as it’s not soundproof at all. We didn’t get any good night sleep for both nights.
Secondly, the cleanliness standard is appalling – there was a thick layer of dust on the headboard of the bed, hair and stains on the mattress, grubby dark scum on bathroom floor and I don’t think they even hoover or mop the room as there was so much dirt, try looking under the carpet and you’ll have the shock of your life. There’s also cobwebs and spiders which I don’t understand how the cleaners can miss if they indeed clean the room.
The only positive notes (2 stars) are the staff and food at restaurant. We dined in both nights and the staff are friendly and compliments to the chef and kitchen for a delightful dining experience. One callout is that it’s weird that there’s no easy way for a hotel guest to order room service, it’s either calling reception to be transferred or the quicker option is going down to place an order.

Comfy Double Room was well set up, with a plug by the bed on both sides to charge phones. Staff was delightful, food was great. They serve breakfast until 2:30pm, which is absolutely brilliant. Great location for exploring Penzance with free street parking not too far away. Excellent water pressure, even on the top floor. Would definitely stay here again in the future!

I had a lovely stay. The room started off as very hot but I was able to cool it down. It was a cute attic room - perfect for 1. The staff were lovely, but I felt a touch stretched at times. Beautifully decorated albeit a bit of a teenage son bedroom theme...half expected a pair of smelly trainers under the bed! The bed was hard and the pillows were like boards.
I love the ideas behind this hotel but it seems a bit tired...dirty stair carpet .Painting Farrow and Ball everywhere is simply not enough.
The tables all wobble irritatingly throughout your meal, the facilities are limited, parking is tricky etc.
I wanted to love it but .....well we didn’t! It is howeve, way better than the Oxfordshire Artists Residence!!!

Lovely - a unique hotel with the friendliest staff

I arrived late - the hotel rang me while I was en route to check I was coming and to reassure me that I wouldn't be locked out! I then got myself lost and they came to guide me to the hotel and weren't remotely put out by this stupid tourist being a bit of a pain. So I was already more than happy. But the hotel is lovely. Each room is different. I was in number 4 - 'the Admiral Benbow', named after the quaint pub opposite. It was decorated in similar fashion and looked gorgeous. The bed was big and comfortable but the room was still spacious. It had a well stocked minibar and TV and wifi and water, coffee and tea and a handy guide to the area. I had a great night's sleep and then a nice breakfast (which is extra) in the morning. What particularly stands out for me is the friendliness and cheeriness of every single member of hotel staff I encountered. They promise to treat every visitor as an individual and that's exactly how it felt. Based on this experience I am definitely coming back!

All good except the room was very hot with no airconditioning & virtually impossible to open the windows. Staff were very helpful with leaving /collecting luggage. To describe the room would be a spoiler as they are unique - suffice to say comfortable bed, excellent shower & toiletries, good hospitality tray & well stocked fridge including fresh milk. Good choice at breakfast. We had an evening meal - good choice & quick service. About 10 minutes walk from the train station. Penlee house/gallery & Morrab gardens/library also about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. 25 - 30 minute walk to Newlyn.

Lovely town but best if you’re not driving

The residence is nice but if you’re driving you need to come prepared to drive around to look for a place to park, and you still might end up with having to move the car before 9am. It’s also a shame that breakfast isn’t included and can be a bit overpriced - £7 for (one slice) of French toast seems a bit excessive when a burger costs £9. But if you’re into a place with a strong hipster-ish kind of decoration you might enjoy. The bar and restaurant are just downstairs which can be handy. Staff were friendly and dealt with booking issues quickly. The room wasn’t ready so they upgraded us and offered drink vouchers and somehow the reservation was showing that we owed half of the stay when we booked via Expedia. But all dealt with smoothly.

I was really looking forward to staying at this hotel after reading the reviews and looking at the pictures. In reality, our room was very small and quite tired looking. The room would benefit from a lick of paint and a good scrub. The toilet and bathroom was clean. I think the hotel was quite overpriced.

The hotel has a strong smell of food throughout it. All in all, penzance rather run down with not much to do but is within reasonable driving distance of lands end, sennen cove etc.

Breakfast not included but very good and reasonably priced. Room and hotel generally very pleasant and good quality, but stairs carpet was filthy and let it down, hence 3 for condition. Bad impression as you go up to your room. Otherwise wooden floors lovely.
Dinner menu looked superb, but too expensive. We crossed the road to the Turk’s Head pub and had a wonderful meal at a much lower cost. Cost of breakfast on top of room price made this a fairly expensive stay, but it was enjoyable. Staff were particularly good.

The hotel is very quirky. We loved the strange decor of our room. The location is good, however, parking & getting luggage out is a bit of a challenge when parking is not available outside the hotel. The staff were very helpful at moving our baggage as we parked on some double yellow lines momentarily. Bed, bedding and pillows were very nice...good quality, comfy and clean.
There were a few issues with stuff being charged to our room in error. The staff were understanding about this and resolved it.
The bar & dining room staff were very lovely indeed. Everyone was doing their best...
We would stay there again...nifty, cute and memorable...

Cute bar/bistro/comfy rooms in centre of Penzance

I've stayed there several times and think it's much better than a B&B (and there are no decent hotels to speak of in the vicinity of Penzance). Just bear in mind that Penzance is a long way from most places (5-6 hours from London by train, but the journey is spectacular in parts). Artist Residence is a large town house conversion with a bar and bistro on the ground floor (the bistro has smoking as a speciality) and rooms above (with a few on the ground floor as well). The decor is pleasant and the rooms are airy, some with views of the pub opposite and some of the coast (I've stayed a few times). Young staff are friendly. I had no problem with a late checkout. Good, free wifi.

Breakfasts are particularly good: try the bacon, poached egg and Hollandaise on sourdough bread or the spinach and local blue cheese also on sourdough.

Some decent restaurants along the quay.

Good for exploring the coast, visiting St Ives and Land's End etc.... 5-6 hours from London on the train.

Our room was on the ground floor, so rather dark expecially as the walls were painted a dark blue. We did not see the upstairs rooms but would guess that they are much lighter.
The bright and cheerful fridge in the room had fresh milk for guests to use.
The young staff were great, cheerful and friendly at all times. The bathroom was brilliant with good hot shower.

As a comparison with similar priced places in Cornwall this does not meet the same level of service standard.
Pros - Rooms have a nice feeling.Quality of toiletries very good. Clean.
Cons - Left standing around laden with bags on arrival with bar staff ignoring us. Had to ask to check in. No parking unless you get lucky. Common areas looking tired with scuffed paint and awkward entry doors to get luggage through. Food quality very good but let down by inattentive service and surrounding tables being left uncleaned. Strange setup with open dishwasher, dirty dishes and cloths right in eating area. Nearly every guest arriving for breakfast had to search for someone to acknowledge their presence and take an order. Empty salt and pepper.
All of the cons are things I wouldn't expect to come across in a hotel at the price level this one is pitched at. It is difficult to do 'casual' right without sliding over to scruffy, sloppy and inattentive which is unfortunately what we experienced.
At a lower price our expectations would have been met but this place needs to up it's game on the attention given to guests to justify being more than a quirky 'hostel'

Hotel is very well decorated and clean. Breakfast was great and the room well stocked with minibar and snacks. Perfect location for getting around Penzance. The only detracting thing was some noise overnight - not sure if it was the beer garden attached to the bar downstairs or random revellers in the streets. But that is the price you pay to have a central location I guess.

Great Location, very artistic hotel!

Amazing location, close to the harbour and cute independent shops. Although we stayed for a short time, we enjoyed the stay. The breakfast is said to have won awards, however, we never tried it as it had no halal or vegetarian options. On a friday night the restaurant and bar area was quite busy and we got to have tea and played some games available in the \"commom room\". Disappointed in the fact that at 9pm we wanted to get some desserts with tea but were quite rudely told that the kitchen was closed, which was odd seeing as it was quite busy. Some really cool and artistic features throughout the hotel, and a cool terrace area (which unfortunately we didnt get to enjoy due to poor weather). Room was a little small, with quite a small TV, but was overall clean and in good condition, and that is considering I am quite picky with cleaningness. Would recommend.
