After booking in we were told that, 1. breakfast was not cooked, I'm sure the pictures showed that, 2. the resturant wasn't open in the evenings, 3. the pool was closed.
Had I known this before checking in I would have changed the booking but it was too late be that time!

Unfortunately we had to get there early as the contact number on the website is no longer use. Half the building was cold the pool was not open as being renovated the gym also not open or the sauna . The room was so small should have been a single . The 2 staff we saw was lovely and very kind . The place didn’t look ready for any guests . We ended up going home .

There was one member of staff the entire stay that was often hard to locate. The kitchen was broken, the WIFI was broken, the access to the gym and pool was locked, all downstairs bathrooms were out of order, the en-suite for our room had mould everywhere in the shower, the check in and check out process was appalling and I wanted to dispute the payment of the room due to the standard provided but was unable to do so due to there being no staff so was charged full price automatically to the card I booked the room with. Would not stay again.

Very run down. Booked with breakfast included. Was told on arrival they have no food available for any meal time. Gym was filthy. Shower was mouldy.
Reception unattended on arrival. Had to look for staff member. When I left at 8:30 the reception was all locked up. No staff around. No receipt for stay. Have emailed but had no response. Travels a lot with work and this is the worst place I have stayed.

Receptionist said Bol..cks when I told him I had breakfast included. Is 9 am until 10 he added but tuesday it will start at 8 am. I accepted this as had no choice. Tuesday at 8 am kitchen locked up and no breakfast.
Room carpet was stained and filthy with the rest of the room little better.
I will avoid this hotel forever!

The hotel building itself is beautiful, however the maintenance of it hasn't been upkept in the grounds. The pool was freezing cold, hot tub isn't filled up, sauna was turned off and my partner and I turned it on and got it running. The rooms themselves were comfortable however the system for the water tanks is incredibly loud and woke us up whenever someone in another room flushed a toilet or used a tap. The breakfast food was lovely, very delicious but with a very small amount of staff, I think things struggled to run more smoothly. It was a very basic hotel and for one night, it was good to stay in. However, I would not be rushing to return.

The property is a wonderful grade II listed building with oodles of character. The breakfast room is exquisitely decorated with busts of famous peots in which you can eat a sumptuous cooked full english breakfast. The property is wonderfully peaceful and the beds as beautifully soft and comfortable.

If you are looking for a modern sparse hotel then this is not it, and you should look elsewhere. If you like a wonderful property with bags of history to it then you are in luck!

Characterful building offering comfortable stays

Decent enough place. Slightly dated and creaky but in a characterful way and owners are clearly working hard to tidy the place up. Putting the breakfast waiter into smarter clothes would help as casual tops and shorts really don’t cut a professional image. Above all it was great to stay somewhere that hadn’t got the heating cranked up to crematorium levels and windows that can be opened properly which gave a comfortable nights sleep.

After reading some of the comments, we nearly cancelled. In fact we were pleasantly surprised by the fact that the Hotel and the people running it were really amiable. The building dates back to the early 1800’s with many rooms still untouched. Lots of different rooms to go and spend time with (bring some board games). The pool is quite large, the sauna (excellent), the gym well equipped. The Hotel is not for people expecting a shiny, perfectly polished environment, but if you are looking for something cosy, with a lot of history and you can appreciate some of the unfinished/disused areas (some of which you may be able to explore) than, have a go! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Thanks

Having read some awful reviews about Fieldways just after booking I was a little apprehensive. However I was pleasantly surprised. When you pay only £84 per night for 2 people including a cooked breakfast you really shouldnt expect the Ritz but here are my thoughts.
This is NOT really a hotel as it has no restaurant, it is a B&B
The cooked breakfast was great and freshly cooked when you reach the dining room
The staff are lovely and friendly
Our room was very nice, clean and the bed very comfy
Yes the place is a bit dated but it is a Victorian mansion and much of the decor and furnishings reflect that.
There is no lift and it seems a bit of a rabbit warren at first but you soon get used to it
Someone mentioned smelling damp in the corridors but that wasn’t our experience, it’s more an old house smell.
The house inside, wooden panelling and downstairs rooms etc were lovely to walk around and imagine it being a family home.
Reception is locked at 8pm but you let yourself in with a key after that
The front of the house/garden could do with a bit of a tidy up but overall we enjoyed our stay, would recommend it and would definitely stay again

No fuss check-in room clean and well laid out pool was so welcome after long drive and food was DeVine,
Will be booking again as such a nice place to stay.
Would recommend if you have a family and want a place to stay as it is vast and you won't even know anyone else is staying there, so kids can play without worrying about neighbours. there were 4 of us 2 adults a 17 year old and a 13year old boy with autism, was nice not to have to keep saying sorry about the boy he is Autistic, (he had a great time) he said it was a great Vacation.

Arriving at the property it looks quite pleasant ,easy to park ,on entering reception the man there was pleasant enough but no overly forthcoming with any information,looked embarrassed/mortified when asked about the swimming pool opening times and gave an answer of \" you can use it if you like but it will be cold as hasnt been on for a few days \"when we were taken down to look at it ,passing many unused rooms that were dirty and messy and overlooking unloved and unkempt outside areas we reached a pool area that looked like something your grandad might have knocked up in the 1970s ,the pool was freezing ,no seats around it so if you were expecting to take your kids and watch from outside you can stand or sit on floor ,a dirty empty ( apart from some rubbish) jacuzzi ,and a sauna that if it was a shed in your garden you would definitely remove it .The bedroom in itself wasnt to bad ,very large room with x2 double beds and one single bed was comfortable and i did sleep well,but there were alot of things that could have been improved on,leak mark on ceiling ,pealing paint about shower ,dirty corners in bathroom cracked glass in bathroom window ,filth between shutters and windows in bedroom and glass that was shot ,also the tv had no signal in the evening ( worked for a while in afternoon )no bedside tables so we were putting cups on the floor ,breakfast was surprisingly nice and the man serving was pleasant enough ,we had sat at a table that hadnt been completely laid so had

Very slow poor service at breakfast

I booked a double room but arrived to find I had been given a twin room. They agreed a double was booked, but said it could not be changed as they were full and house keeping gone for the day (before 16:00). Said they would fix next day, but did not.

Sauna not working

Breakfast quality was good, but service ridiculously slow. I had an appointment, so booked and arrived for the eatliest start at 8:00. I was first there. No staff came in until 08:15 when they took my order. I was not served until around 8:40, last perdon to be served, after 6 other people who all arrived after me. One couple arrived 10 minutes after the waiter took my order, and were still served before me. I was late for my appointment as a redult

This was once a grand stately home but has now sadly lost its grandeur and needs a lot of work and is now just a basic b&b. Given the price and reviews we weren't expecting a lot. The receptionist was very friendly, the building very quirky and you can see walking through how beautiful this must have been in it heydey. The room was basic but big, and beds and bed linen were all clean and tidy as was most of the room, just don't look at the lampshades or to closely at the windows! Shower was ok. There is lack of plugs but didn't expect anything else given it was basic and an old building. It was a very hot day but would suspect it would be cold in winter.

Breakfast was lovely, the room where breakfast is served is all wood clad and very old and it was lovely to see the original features. There were a selection of cereals, toast and a cooked hot breakfast which was perfect.

If you are looking for luxury this isn't the place but it was comfy, breakfast was lovely and so were the staff and staying in a building with so much history made up for everything else.

The house is stunning and the staff are so friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was great. Freshly made to order and the chef made us poached eggs even though they weren’t offered on the menu.

We were offered use of the swimming pool (but didn’t use it) and the sitting rooms and breakfast rooms make you believe you are living in a castle.

The only down side was the bedroom. Although clean and comfortable they are dated and would benefit from a good refresh. We stayed in a twin room and there was one single and one double bed but what we liked (being two female friends) is that they were not head to head but quite separate.

The hotel is about 20min walk from the train station. We parked at the hotel early and travelled into bath on the train.

Overall I would recommend this hotel.

Hands down one of the worst hotels i have stayed at. Requested a downstairs room.. didnt get it. No shower in the room, merely a mouldy corner bath with a tap/ shower attachment, broken tiles & various fittings. Rude moody breakfast staff, when i requested no beans on their breakfast form, breakfast itself was terrible & took 30 mins to arrive. The receptionist tried to talk me out of eating at 0800 due to their being too many people eating at the time. Curtain rails hanging off walls & no blinds on the skylights. The place is disgustingly dirty, including the pool, changing rooms & rooms. AVOID AVOID AVOID

But ultimately the room shower was blocked and water was around my ankles which was disgusting. I had to leave the property after 30 minutes and find another place to stay. The receptionist Sue was helpful but couldn’t do anything as no maintenance at night.

Fieldways four day stay in April 2025

This place was in a very old mansion and it was a fun place for a North American not used to this kind of stay. The owners were very nice and the breakfast was very good BUT… it wasn’t very clean at all and I actually wrote “dust me”on the window sill. It would have been bad for anyone suffering from asthma. It was so cold (April) that we had to wear our hoodies in the room. There was only one small bedside light about as bright as a Christmas tree one. We both couldn’t read because there was an extremely dim ceiling light so I sat on my phone all evening which I did out of desperation for something to do. ( It got dark at 8:00 so we wanted to be back before then) It was a fairly short walk to a pub or restaurant but I use a walker so we drove into the town for dinner which meant my husband couldn’t enjoy a pint which we like to do when in England. The main reason we booked here was because they had a pool. Well, we must be psychic because we just knew that would be the case. It seems to be the case in most hotels lol.
Sad to say, that we can’t recommend this place at all.

There were a number of issues during my stay that fell far below expectations, particularly for the price and the way the hotel is advertised:

The pool, which was a key reason for booking, was closed and had been for at least a week, but this was not mentioned at the time of booking.

The reception area was unusable due to carpet works (presumably following a leak), which were being poorly installed and made the entrance feel unwelcoming.

The room was not clean and in poor repair – curtain rails hanging off, cracked tiles, broken cupboards, and general untidiness.

A boiler outside the room kept me awake, and the fire alarm went off twice during the night, causing further disruption.

The skylight in the room had no blind, making it very bright and uncomfortably hot

Although breakfast itself was good, the tables were cleared with a dustpan and brush, leaving grease and stains on the tablecloths.

There was visible rubbish left throughout the hotel, which had not been cleared during the stay.

At checkout, there was no staff member available. When I spoke to the chef, I was met with unprofessional and upsetting comments: “f'ing say what you like\"

The bed was clean, warm and comfy, the towels were clean. The breakfast was lovely. I had a single room which was ok for a one night stay.
The hosts were lovely and welcoming, but the room I had was in desperate need of some tlc, there were stains on the carpet, the wallpaper was peeling in several places, there was no way to open the windows which were filthy and covered in cobwebs. The door on the shower came off its frame, the arms on the chair were coming loose, if there was an extractor fan in the bathroom then it didn't work.

Fieldways - One night stay

Check in was easy & all staff were extremely friendly & helpful . No doubt in it's day , this was an amazing very high end luxury home but is currently in need of a little TLC . The breakfast & dining room need to be seen to be really appreciated & made up for the tired bedroom which I did sleep ok in . Breakfast was cooked to order & was very good . No evening meals but the Codfather fish & chip restaurant is just a few minutes away in town was also really good with great staff .

Beautiful property. Loved the character of the old mansion and the decor within the home. Check in was pleasant and easy. The TV channel selection was good compared to other places in our travels, which helps with children.

Rooms were clean, however there was no soap provided to wash your hands in the room, which was inconvenient. We didn’t have a great sleep as the beds are quite hard, and the pillow cases had a damp towel unfresh scent that was my biggest complaint. Other than that, it was good for the price point and fine for one night.

I'd like to start by saying, for the money, I was very satisfied.
After a long drive it felt very welcoming pulling up to a picturesque converted 1800s manor house with plenty of parking in the front garden area. The room itself was spacious and quiet, I opted for the double. The breakfast was freshly prepared and tasty. I didn't get a chance to try out the pool area or bar. Maybe next time!
There are some pretty grand communal rooms with impressive carpentry, antique furniture and comfortable seating areas.
Unfortunately, the interior of the bedrooms feel as though they were kitted out rather cheaply around 30 to 40 years ago. Handles are falling off doors and the furniture is similar to student accommodation. I wouldn't have minded so much except the bed was like sleeping on a ground mat. I like a firm mattress but this one was solid enough to interrupt my sleep. A bit of a shame given I paid for the double room in the vain hope it would be more comfortable. This was honestly my only problem. Other than that it was a very pleasant stay for great value.

The room was small, but it was the black mold all around the bathroom and shower, scraped paint, peeling wallpaper, toilet that variably flushed (or not), the sink faucets that would not stop running unless turned off so hard you could not open them again later, and two lonely hangers in the wardrobe that made this stay so disappointing. Lovely house, but needs some cosmetic work and maintenance on the rooms. Also - the WiFi so weak it never appeared for the room, only in the breakfast room or lounge. Such a gorgeous place, I would love to see it again restored to its old glory.

Ok for a night.

The hotel building is a old quirky manor house.
Staff were lovely and welcoming and explained a lot which was hard to remember but helpful.
We were in room 4 which was nice with a balcony and green view over front.
Beds were clean and comfy and tv worked but all looked like it needs a bit of TLC
But the bathroom needs help. We only stayed one night as we were travelling but didnt want to be in bathroom for long as the fan when light turned on sounded like a helicopter.... it was so loud! Plus again needs TLC and a refresh.
Breakfast was yummy and the breakfast room had everything you needed from coffee and tea to juice and fruit. You do need to fill in a breakfast form the day b4 as its run and cooked by one lady on her own as far as we could see.
There was no Wifi that either of us could pick up even tho it was advertised.
Great price and would stay again but only if it was one night.

You get what you pay for - it's a simple room that does the job for a couple of nights.

The good:
- Really nice and helpful staff who do their best to make your stay as good as it can be
- Good breakfast, with a gluten free option
- Good transport links into Trowbridge town centre (essentially just down the road) with a bus stop right outside the hotel to go to Trowbridge or Devizes or another bus stop down the road to get to Melksham etc.
- Pricing is reasonable for what you get
- Room was clean with a good selection of tea/coffee and a small TV with all the channels you'd need.

The bad:
- Small team of staff means that reception is often unstaffed as they are busy with other tasks around the building.
- Breakfast was late on both mornings, despite booking it the day before. This meant that I had to rush to catch my busses.
- The building itself is fairly old and in need of some repairs. Loud pipes (especially when someone in the building flushed the toilet), minimal soundproofing (but generally quiet so not that big of a problem), and my room had a window and curtain that wouldn't shut properly.

Would consider staying again if the budget didn't allow for a better option.

Staff were lovely room ok but needing some TLC whole place could be fantastic if only the owners were to invest some cash into the place. To attract cash, investment is definitely needed if this place is to survive!

Immensely likeable property. Unusual in that the reception rooms retained the gracious style and period of the house and my (single) bedroom was tucked away up numerous small staircases, something of a challenge for the less nimble. Indeed the lady on reception was clearly less so than I! The staff and owners were pleasant and helpful and I would certainly go again.

The general condition of the place is terrible, I am disappointed that this was even an option to stay in. Definitely not one to return to - definitely should not be for children.

Cobwebs and dead insects everywhere. Generally unclean. Not been maintained - peeling wall paper, chipped paintwork, black mouldy caulking, noisy toilet / water waste system. Decor all very outdated - worse than the pictures show! The pool was unclean and in need of repair

Refused to stay at hotel and had refund!!!

Booked for my daughter and her boyfriend but they never stayed the night. The room was disgusting with stains on bedding and carpet, had not been hoovered as food and fluff covered sweets stuck to floor, everything covered in dust and other residents told them not to use the pool as it had bought them out in a rash. Receptionist tried her best but was unable to offer alternative room as fully booked. Manager helped sort out a refund through Hotels.com on his own time. Staff seem lovely but the photos show the room was awful.

Don’t go there!!!

The whole stay was a disaster.
When we checked in we had to go hunting for someone as the desk was unmanned.
Once we obtained the key we were told there was no hot breakfast due to a burst pipe in the kitchen.
We were then taken to our en-suite room. Tiny, broken wardrobe, mould around the shower, extractor fan that came on with the bathroom light sounded like a Vulcan bomber starting up, Maserator intermittently coming on throughout the night.
We went for a swim in their indoor pool, the pool was crumbling, the changing rooms old and tired, grubby.
The pictures on the website are deceptively misleading. In reality the hotel requires a lot of work doing on it to make it anything like worth the money or as described in the brochures.
I would recommend you give this hotel a swerve.

Wont go back!

When I booked I chose a ground floor room with a double bed.
On arrival we were shown to a top floor room with two single beds and was told that was all that was available.
The receptionist was informative and helpful, but told us that we needed to go to breakfast at 7.45am at the latest on the Friday and 8.30am on the Saturday.
On Friday we went down to breakfast at 7.30 to find that the water for the tea was cold and there was no bread for toast. eventually we got hot water and bread and had to wait 45 minutes for our cooked breakfast, I say cooked but the mushrooms were actually raw!
On Saturday, we went to the dining room at 8.30 am, but it was full. The chef told us to wait in the small lounge, near the dining room. After waiting about ten minutes and looking at the filthy carpet that is in there, we went back to see if there was room in the dining room but there wasn't. A female staff member saw us and suggested that we have breakfast in the large dining room that we had been told was not being used. I said that as I did not want to walk between dining rooms with my cereal, toast tea etc, We would wait for a table in the dining room where everything was. We were told to come back in 30 minutes.
We returned in 30 minutes and when we finally received our cooked breakfast it was very nice.
Just after we arrived on Thursday, I made a cup of tea in our room, The teaspoon was filthy and looked like someone had been eating tomato soup with it. It was disgusting.

Pleasant staff, room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was lovely. Bathroom could do with a little updating and the lock on the window in my room was broken but overall it was very comfortable and well worth the money. I will definitely be staying again.

The staffcould not be more helpful sorting out our room problem. Expedia sent us a download stating we had a ground floor room but when we arrived no room was available,we needed the room because of mobility issues so very dissapointed with Expedia. However the good people at the venue got us the room we needed next day and were wonderful to us for the whole of our stay.

Large home with rooms, needs updating. The pool looked nice but it was closed. No staff on the premises after 8pm. The house was quiet and we never encountered any other guests until breakfast. Breakfast was good and fresh. Not much going on in Trowbridge.
