the Barge is a pub with accomodation in a very good location, about 10 minutes walk from the town centre. Although the staff are welcoming and the room was clean, the overall appearance of the pub is that it is shabby and run down. The carpet on the staircase leading to the bedrooms was grubby and had a large hole in it. outside the garden furniture has seen better days and there is a canopy which has come adrift from its fixings and been lashed to the outside bar. However, the draught beer was well kept and tasted brilliant!

the room was very very small (i had to put my small suitcase on the bed to open it up and then in front of the door at night as no space around the bed. the room had a strong smell of moth balls. the window was painted open so couldnt be closed to shut out the noise from a generator outside in the night and then rubbish pick up in the morning.

This pub has a parking system that apparently is designed as some sort of fraud. Upon checking in, one must register their vehicle on a self service computer, which despite several attempts was not working. We then have vehicle details to staff who assured us they would enter it. We were staying at the hotel! A few weeks later I received a charge on my credit card for £90, yes £90! This was more than we paid for the room. I appealed this charge on the clear basis that we were staying at the hotel and there is very clear evidence of this but after 2 weeks I get a clearly bog standard response saying appeal refused, I obviously didn’t see the signs. It is clear that they didn’t even bother to read my appeal and that this is a rip off. Avoid this place, now I see why we were the only ones there.

Room was extremely small - no room for suitcases or bags. Midgies were an issue and had to close window - being so small the room was super stuffy. A fan was available which helped a little. If stairs are an issue for you - find somewhere else. Okay for a quick one night stop but wouldn’t recommend for any longer. Dinner (lamb) was amazing - highly recommend the food.

Beautiful room looking out into the garden, decorated tastefully absolutely spotless. Fantastic shower room and soft towels. I couldn't fault it, wonderful value for money.

This was exactly what we were looking for, we needed a bed for the night as had met friends for dinner and drinks while they were on a canal boat holiday. We had to leave early the next morning to get back for work. It was clean and tidy. We wouldn’t stay for a long stay but for the one night it was good. Staff were very nice, friendly and welcoming.

Newly decorated/refurbished with a nice bathroom & comfy bed but it was really tiny and I had a view of the bins. Have to enter via the pub which smelled and was not inviting. The exterior door just below my room didn't close, let alone lock. The stair carpet and hallway chair were stained. The wifi is very very poor so I had no internet access, and no cell access either. Staff told me this is because it's a listed building and because of the rainy (but not windy) weather. My cell (vodafone) also didn't operate inside, so I was isolated and couldn't do as I had planned. I cancelled my 2nd night which they refused to refund.

Good place for a stop over and a bite to eat

Plenty of parking on arrival, nice pub with room upstairs. Check in was easy and hassle free, room was very small but expected from reading previous reviews. Very smart and tidy though with great shower. Mattress a little unforgettable. Poor wifi signal. Pub/restaurant service eas excellent menu was very creative with plenty to choose from. Little disappointed with the quantity of the meat but overall was good. Breakfast started at 8:30 and was the best ive had in a long time. Id stay again as a stop over but due to the room size it would get quite anoying.

The room was small and everything was very old and worn. Bed was so squeaky that we woke up every time one of us turned.
There was a rat in the restaurant area running in from the kitchen.

Good overnight stay

Nice looking pub, plenty of parking and the staff were very friendly. The room was ok, beds were clean and comfortable, not sure about what looked like a half eaten choc chip cookie left in a jar by the coffee. Did not like that the outside door was to be left ajar so anyone could walk in and if you let it shut by accident then you were locked out. I did this but luckily the pub was still open. For the price I would stay again for the night but wouldn't want it as a base for any longer

First, it was not horrible. Very affordable. The beds were broken, tiles cracked, large crack in the wall of the room. For a cheap stay it was ok, but you really get what you pay for.

Loved the location and freindliness of staff. All very helpful. Food great too and service. Room was great for money and very comfortable but there is a £20 fee for dogs we didnt know about. This covers for each 2 nights you might stay.

Could be so much better

Great location alongside the canal and 10min walk into town. When we booked we chose the small double. It was called The Wharf. Yes, it was small, not much space at all to pass between the bed and the walls. Limited storage. However, we knew it was a small double, so no problem with this. However, the bed had seen better days. Very creaky and uncomfortable. The room needs a blind, as window fronts on to a car park. Bin in bathroom not emptied for the three days we stayed. No shower jel or shampoo, just a handwash on the sink. Floorboards above very creaky and very little sound insulation. Floor tiles in bathroom broken and cracked. Access staircase carpet extremely dirty and walls dirty and marked. Hopefully, other rooms are better.

A nice comfortable place

We found the Barge Inn quite easily, about 5 minutes walk from the station. It is on a main road but set quite far back, so noise is not a problem.
The person who greeted us was friendly and seemed relaxed. There wasn't a long list of rules !!!!
The room was very cosy and clean, and the bed was really comfortable. We also had a really great view of the canal.
We never tried the food, or the breakfast, as we were eating elsewhere. But the beers and ciders in the bar were lovely … and cheap !
There is also a huge garden and also a smaller garden right on the canal.
It wasn't really the weather for using these so they were in winter mode, but I bet they are magic in the summer.
I would recommend both the town and the Barge Inn to any other travellers.

Perfect overnight stay

I stayed overnight whilst visiting friends and enjoyed my stay. The room as really cosy and sweet, as I was on my own I didn't have any trouble with the size. The there was no noise disturbances, there is a road outside but I didn't find that troubling at all. I stayed for breakfast the next morning which was also very nice.

Good location on the canal, short walk into town. It feels a little tired in places. Bar felt it was for locals, probably better in the spring and summer months. Lots of other places around so good base at a reasonable price.

Great location

The pub is in a lovely location, next to the canal, with parking and a short walk to the train station. Lots of pubs and restaurants in walking distance also. The pub itself is very nice and comfy and the twin room was a good size and clean. A number of issues though while we were there; the coffee machine in our room didn’t work, no hot water in the morning and we were given a free breakfast because of is, although we only found this out by accident! Breakfast was absolutely delicious though! WiFi didn’t work while we were there and staff often left you waiting at the bar and appeared to ignore us. Also staff members smoking and talking very loudly under our window in the morning. I would stay here again but they really need to sort these things out. There were lots of people complaining while we were there!

The Barge Inn

Nice Hotel, staff friendly and helpful. Room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast wasn’t included in the price of the room which was disappointing.
Soap dish in the shower was broken, shower head was clogged with limescale and one of the lampshades was cracked. None of these affected my stay but attention to detail is expected when you are paying £109.00 for one night.
I requested an early check in which was £10.00 and meant I could check in from midday which was good value.

Romm directly over kitchen extractor fan.

Tiny room at the top of a grim small staircase. Opened the window on a super hot day as no air-con to discover the kitchen extractor fan was underneath and made a horrible noise and within ten minutes I stank of chips. The room was clean enough but they just had not thought it through. The view over the bins wasn't exactly life enhancing either. You simply can't chase 80 odd quid for that. Terrible.

Bad Student Project with no Supervisor

Hotels.com, to pay Barge Inn after.
Received e-mails from \"[email protected]\" saying failed undisclosed security check to re-book and pay. E-mail that of Barge Inn management.Phoned three times and told by bar staff that would be called back but I was not.
Arrival 11:00 23/06/2018 eventually asked to book after 15:00,
Returned 18:00 shown up stairs and through a hallway, carpet filthy with ground in dirt to rooms.One room not cleaned.Had to wait 'til 19:50 for room, only (UN-ironed) bed linen and towels changed.Drinking water & opened biscuits not replaced.Room had no remote for TV, several requests was offered non-functional remote.Both rooms were not clean.
Morning,smothered in shower gel, shower did not work. Wrapped in a towel asked other room told that this one did not work.
Breakfast a bit of a shock not included in room price.
No kettles or teapots on the premises, with cup of hot water & teabag, repeated. Fried breakfast dry solid sausage, broken & burnt egg, only one slice brown bread toast, no white. Poached egg on toast was soggy.
No mature management on site, only untrained students,upbeat, placating and lying that something would be done and real management/owners would contact us. They did not.Rooms £99 each, would be acceptable for a properly run establishment.
Better staff, attention to detail, basic maintenance with superb location it could be great, but it is not.
I really can not recommend it in its current state.Jun2018

This was a lovely B&B in a great location and the member of staff who checked me in and served me for the evening was friendly and made my stay spot on. The only draw back was the weather was extremely cold when I stayed and the room itself was not warm enough.

Room on the cool side due to window wide open when we entered. No cups and Coffee Machine could not use. One bottle of Water in a double Bedroom. We asked for heater in room but never got one. Carpet on corridor and Staircase very dirty. Food was very good.
