The ocean view was great; however, despite the resort pictures showing you could walk right out onto the beach and access the water, you could not because of the sargassum seaweed. There was a dock for water and boat access. Our room was sufficient, but the entire resort was a little run-down. We went without water one day, and went without hot water for two whole days. Most mornings, we woke up to noise from the construction that was going on. The restaurant closed early because it was slow, so we didn't get dinner that night.

The rooms are nicer than the website photos. Had a good view of the pool and ocean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The property is currently being renovated so there was some noise but not to bad. We were charged a resort fee for booking thru Expedia. Housekeeping was lacking! They want you to place used toilet paper in a covered trash can because of the septic tank. No problem doing this except the trash can was rarely emptied. One time the sheets were changed and a double bed sheet was placed on the king bed. Fortunately we find another king size sheet and remade the bed. We requested some clean bath towels and when we came back to the room there were only 6 hand towels. It got better as the week wore on I would go back

We had a good stay at Captain Morgan's Retreat. We stayed in a cabana room with a porch looking out on the water. Beautiful view. Super clean. Super nice staff, always with a smile. Cute little store on the property to pick up a few needs. It's north of town, so it's very quiet there. The food at the restaurant was good too.

We had the most charming Villa.
We were celebrating our 40th Anniversary. The staff made it so special. We returned to the villa with a surprise set up of towels swans, flower peddles and Champaign.
We chose Captain Morgans because we were looking for a place to just enjoy the ocean view and relax. It did NOT disappoint.
The resort offered everything you would need if you chose to spend your entire time there.
We are looking forward to returning.

We had to ask every day for new coffee, new water housekeeping there was no consistency with it at all and it started getting really frustrating. There was a lot of garbage on the beach and we got the most amount of bug bites. I’ve ever had the entire weekend. I didn’t see one person swim in the pool, although it looks cleaned.

Incredible amount of sargassum in front of resort which appears to have been there a very long time therefore water very dirty. Room and pool no complaints. Overall resort needs much improvements as showing its age in many aspects. First step would be the visual of the resort as you first appear ( ex face lift with updated signage, paint) so doesn’t look neglected.

I arrived at 7:30 PM and the front desk was closed, but the driver was excellent took great care of me made sure I got in the room OK and even convinced the people next-door at oceans to stay open long enough for me to get some takeout food. The Casita is perfect and the beach is wonderful I would strongly suggest Orbitz let customers know that the Front Desk here closes at 7 PM.

We will not be staying at this property again. We felt very unsafe. Someone entered our room unannounced in the middle of the night and was wandering around our living room in the darkness. We were startled awake and afraid. When confronted he claimed to be security but was not wearing anything to identify himself as Captain Morgan staff. He did not knock at the door or announce himself before entering. He said he was checking on a light that was left on, but there were no lights on in the our room as we were asleep. This entire exchange happened in the darkness at 5am. When we reported it to the manager on site, he dismissed it and said upper management would give me a call to discuss what happened. I have yet to be contacted by anyone at the property.

The location is awesome. About 15-20 minutes away from the golf cart grid lock of San Pedro. About 5 minutes from the Truck Stop, and 20 minutes from Secret Beach. We should have gotten a cart for the duration of our stay. The property is in the midst of renovation. The staff is awesome. On the other hand, this is the first hotel in Belize where you have to buy, yes buy, your water. The room did not have a microwave. But Greg, who runs the restaurant will gladly reheat food for you.

There’s no hot tub there, which is why I booked it. But great atmosphere and close to the night life. Rooms will make you feel like you are on a ship (dark). Beautiful beach and the cabana porch is awesome! Staff are incredible.

We loved our cabana! It was right on the ocean, authentic, clean, and had lots of room for the two of us. We loved the location, it close but not too close to the heart of the city so we had lots of things to do that were close but did not have to deal with the busy downtown. The only things we did not love were the beds (we found it hard) and the cost of the drinks and food at the resort. It was more expensive so we left all the time to eat and drink. One thing to be aware of in general is that no restaurants or coffee shops open unitl 8am so if you are an early riser ensure you have snacks and coffee in your room!

Our air conditioner leaked for two days before we realized because it was going into my travel purse so we didn’t hear it. They fixed that. I also told them that our tv didn’t work because it needed an antenna cable. I was told that our room didn’t have one. Normally when we vacation we don’t watch tv but when it rained for two days we needed it. My husband lost a room key on the dock. I told the office right away. They said it was ok. One employee can ruin the whole trip. Fortunately for us it was the last morning. He charged me $25 for the room key and never compensated for the ruined bag and no tv. I asked for a manager and he said first he wasn’t there. Then by the time I got done talking and asked when the manager will be there. He told me they didn’t have one. I just paid it and learned to never go back

The pictures on Expedia and their site are VERY outdated. The resort exterior is super run down and underwhelming. You drive up and the first thing you see is the \"casino\" which is closed and dilapidated. We got there around 6:30 and the lobby was closed luckily a worker let us into our room.

1/2 the resort is going through renovation which was not mentioned so the main pool would not be a place you would want to hang out.

The cabana we stayed in was nice- definitely dated but served the purpose. There was 4 of us and we were given 3 towels (we got more the next day) and there was nowhere to hang anything. We had bathroom towels all over the room.

I am sure this place used to be amazing, but it has definitely lost a lot of its luster. We really didn't do anything there but sleep. There were two pools but we did not use either as they did not seem that clean. We got one cup of coffee for $5usd that was Kirkland brand but did not get any food so not sure quality there.

We had stayed at the Belizan Shores last year and wished we would have moved but it was too much of a hassle.

All of the staff that we talked to were great- friendly and attentive.

This was my 3rd stay at Captain Morgan's & definitely my most disappointing. Pre-arrival, Alex was most helpful. However, once there the attention to guests went downhill. After being delayed a day due to weather, you would think the room would be ready upon arrival, but it was not. There was construction at the main pool area which was both noisy &unnerving. While construction is unavoidable, there was no advance notice or even any acknowledgement of it. The chef did not show up one morning until almost noon (we were informed he was out partying the night before), so there was no breakfast available. The safe in the room broke & started beeping incessantly. We asked for maintenance who could not fix it. They managed to stop the beeping, but then it went off in the middle of the night at 12:45AM with no one around to help. BUT the worst & most disconcerting part was when we rented a golf cart. They stated they had none available but 5 minutes later one magically appeared & we were sent on our way. The steering was tight but hey its a golf cart not a car. Soon after, we could barely steer at all & coasted into the gas station where the attendant, Mike, had to help us maneuver in. He informed us that it was completely broken axel & the front end was not even bolted on! We very cautiously made our way back to the resort. They then tried to replace the cart for us with one that had no brakes! An hour later a safe cart was delivered. Very disappointed and won't return

The property is under construction. Noise of the machines started around 7:00 AM. Hammer drills were used on the side of the building all day long. The construction materials and debris were stored just outside our door.
The staff while friendly, were only able to give us two bath towels and 1 roll of toilet paper for out unit. When out, we had to go ask for more at the front desk. There was never any bottled water in the lobby for us to fill our water cups. It felt like the management was trying to account for every penny.

We had dinner at the restaurant our first night and I know people that own condos here and I know the owner-however the Chef/Waiter at the restaurant CHARGED US DOUBLE for what should have been ONE SEAFODD PLATTER-there was not enough food for 2 people--we had 2 small lobster tail, one scoop of rice, one serving of vegetable and 8 SHRIMP. I live in Belmopan and this should have been $75 BZD not the $150 BZD were charged and I complained to the owner who said she would take care of it--however went to go check out today and NOPE THE CHARGES WERE ON OUR BILL ---honestly this kind of customer service that is not okay for anyone, especially for Belizean locals!! The picture is what I was charged $150 BZD--not worth it!!

The resort is well developed. The interior is a bit antiquated but clean and functional. The resort has organized everything needed to travelers, ie.. golf cart rental (on property) WiFi passwords, on site restaurant and bar ( great food) , swimming pool and a/c unit that works great, transportation to and from the airport (additional fees) and an on site convenience store. A major plus that we didn’t realize until the end of our trip was that the resort operated on a super quiet generator. The island during our trip encountered multiple days and hours without electricity. At the resort we never were inconvenienced due to the loss of power in the area. We respectfully turned off our lights and a/c when we went out exploring the island and can’t imagine trying to sleep without a/c. The staff is friendly and treated us like royalty. This was our first stay at the resort and would stay there again without hesitation.

Quiet But Basic Accomodations

The location is probably 4 miles from the town of San Pedro. The cabanas was nice and our location was right on the beach. You must rent a golf cart for your entire stay - to get to restaurants groceries, etc.
They was a restaurant on site but the the service is miserably slow and attention to detail is nonexistent. If you like quiet accommodations and far from San Pedro this is your place. Not sure if the swimming pool is fit to swim but during our 5-day stay we only saw one guy swimming there. The room was clean but I would classify it as basic accommodations.

When we came 8 years ago there were more amenities. We were a little disappointed to see that they no longer had the swim-up bar overlooking the water and you couldn't charge anything to your room. You always have to have your money with you. Lots of construction and changes happening. They should at least warn anyone trying to book. Overall, we still enjoyed our time there. Hard to have a bad time on Ambergris Caye.

We had a beautiful view of the sea from our porch. The 1 bedroom suite was very spacious and comfortable. The beach was clean but we didn't realize it would have a sea wall and you could not enter the water easily plus it was rough water.
There was construction next to the Captain Morgan pool and restaurant which made it a bit dirty and ugly. However, the breakfast deal was a great option at $65 per person for the entire week.
The staff was friendly, helpful and accommodating.

Our oceanfront cabana was great and had a beautiful view. Only issue we noticed was the bathroom ceiling tile is falling. A portion of the resort is under remodel, overal resort needed love. Can feel some kind of really hard surface under the sand (need more sand brought in), the grounds could be so beautiful but doesnt appear a lot of effort is put into it or maybe just really understaffed. They let us check in early which was very nice. The staff was friendly, there is a store there which is nice since you're a little ways from town but wouldnt say they are very friendly. Restaurant was subpar. Only ones there and still messed up my husbands order but in all fairneas only ate there once. Pool was nice, we used the one at Oceans 23 (next door) which is better kept then the 2 at Capt. Morgans. For the price it was an ok stay, it is a little ways from town, some road construction, lots of speed bumps

Unusable Beach and Overpriced Dinner

Overall, we really liked the two story cabana which was great for a family of four to have some room to spread out. The view from the balcony was excellent and the staff were extremely friendly (which you'll find all over Belize). The reason we gave this a lower rating was because when we checked in, the receptionist said, \"We recommend that you not swim on our beach because the Sargassum grass in the water may cause health issues.\" That would have been very good information to know before we booked this place!!! We ended up having to rent a golf cart to drive several miles over to secret beach for the 'only' place without Sargassum. Secondly, the first night we had their fish special at the hotel restaurant and it didn't have a price on it. The fish was excellent but we were still hungry after, then the bill came for $150 USD (which only had two beers). Between the unusable beach and the overpriced dinner, it put us in a bad frame of mind on this Caye being a tourist trap. I'll re-iterate that the staff was awesome and the grounds are beautiful.

All the staff from the reception area to the restaurant were very friendly. The main pool had construction going on but was beautiful to have breakfast at the pool. The other pool, which belongs to the adjacent resort on property was absolutely breathtaking. You could walk into the pool just as if you were from the shoreline to the ocean, which I loved. No steps to get in and out of the pool.

Incredibly friendly staff and an excellent location, because it is halfway between San Pedro town and secret beach. Restaurants on site and nearby, and tours will pick you up at the resort, with snorkeling leaving from the resort. The view is spectacular. The only complaint is that the room did not have a microwave, which we knew it wouldn’t but is still a lack. Casino closed for Covid-19 but all else operating as normal. Grocery store on site

The staff was friendly, helpful and caring. The staff is what really saved our stay. We paid for 2 ocean front rooms so we could have easy access to the beach, but because of the seagrass \"infestation\" the beach was inaccessible and the smell was almost unbearable. We had to rent, and pay for, a golf cart daily so we could escape to a different area.
The rooms are acceptable and clean, not resort status. There are 2 pools that are not for the hotel guests to access, they should not be pictured or advertised as part of the hotel then. Overall we had a relaxing time but the hotel and beach were a disappointment.

Everyone that works at Captain Morgan's is so kind. They all truly care about the guests staying there and will go out of their way to prove it! Ingrid, the bartender, takes the time to learn everyone's name, greets them with a smile, and is so kind! The staff helped me organize a cake and balloons for my husband's birthday. The casino was closed due to COVID, which we didn't know about prior to booking, so that was a bummer. But it was still a wonderful experience!

We stayed in cabins 22, right on the beach. It had a very comfortable bed and the views were unimpeded! We fell asleep to the sounds of the waves and the oceans breeze every night. The cabina is perfect for two people with a small fridge and a coffee maker. We liked to sit on the small deck and read or hang out.

There are three pools on the property though at one point, the bartender told us two of them were reserved for owners. We used them anyway since they were advertised. Important to note that the ones with the swim-up bar are NOT staffed. So expect to walk to the other pool to get your drinks.

Staff was friendly though inconsistent on information. On Tuesday nights, the restaurant has a nice buffet of local foods with vendors there to sell trinkets and live reggae music. No one told us about it but we did hear about it from another guest. Sadly, it was poorly attended. Better communication of what is available to guests would be appreciated.

Location of the resort is close enough to town without being too far away. Any further than 2-3 miles N of the bridge (or N of here) is far with road conditions.

Recommended to rent your golf cart from the resort! It is a few dollars more than getting one in town but there is only one gas station on the S side of town and getting back and forth to it on return day is a PAIN and a loss of valuable vacation time!

Enjoyable, relatively quiet, beautiful setting, close to the water. Everything was great! Not a 5 star for US standards but certainly for this beautiful island. 2 concerns, nothing terrible, just know you are on a small “island”. The water pressure was low but always had hot water. The other concern was the proximity to your neighbors. We stayed in the Premium Cabanas. The views and proximity to the water made it up for it. The retreat is 3 miles from San Pedro. Very happy for that as San Pedro is very noisy. You will need a golf cart regardless. There’s lots to explore while taking a day off from diving. Will definitely stay here again.

We had the ability to take the kayaks out a couple times to see dolphins and eagle rays, which is all complimentary. I would stay here again.

My husband and I fell in love with Ambergris and Captain Morgan’s 17 years ago. The property has grown a lot since then. The staff is still friendly, the beach and pools are beautiful. My only mini complaint is not being able to get any clean towels for 3 days. I don’t mind being environmentally conscious and have no problem hanging bath towels but being able to get fresh hand towels, washcloths and dish towels more frequently if you need them would be nice.

The crew at Captain Morgan's Retreat was awesome. Bonafacio greeted us with a smile (along with Joelle, Phil, and Joel during our stay) at the Front Desk. Our room was taken care of and had a nice touch of flower petals when we checked in...wife really like that...and immediately we realized they cared about clean!!! Clean room, clean bathroom, clean sheets, clean, clean, clean!!! Roger helped us with all of our excursions for snorkeling and a trip to the Mayan ruins! This is a great place and really nice to have everything (golf cart, restaurant, store, and beach) onsite. We will be coming back.

Seaweed/ Grass

Seaweed/grass is a massive problem which is feet deep and has discoloured the sea to a brown colour 100's of yards out. A few resorts have closed down due to this problem. No swimming possible.
Staff at Captain Morgan are brilliant, apartment was good as is the resort as a whole.The weed is constantly being removed but it is an uphill struggle.

Beautiful resort located about 10-15 minutes from town. Unfortunately it's in need of maintenance. It's starting to look at bit \"used\" but I would still go back. Great staff and great service! They now charge for the user of paddle boards but no biggie, we had great time! They should try to use a water net to fight the Sargassum invasion. Overall great experience!

Check in took a couple hours. The staff was overwhelmed and there were several guests ahead of us in line that had room complaints that took a long time to resolve.
The exterior condition of the resort buildings looked like it was in need or repair - wood siding falling off, missing soffets, etc.
The main pool was very pretty, but the poot with the swim up bar always looked cloudy and lots of stuff floating in it.
The room was nice, the AC unit in the bedroom worked great. The only complaint was the mouse problem...our bread and snacks were broken into and mostly eaten by rodents.
We were also there the week after heavy winds and rough seas so the water was churned up and murky with mounds and mounds of sea weed. Not much that can be done about that, but no body was swimming at the resort beach and snorkeling wasn't possible.

The resort was clean, comfortable and service from the staff was great! AC was fully functional and we had a ceiling fan available. My friend and I stayed at the small, beach front house.
If you are looking for a place to relax, away from town and local businesses, then this is the place for you. The beach front is not a clear blue like other areas. Aside from the sea grass, which I was expecting, the water looked murky and not suitable to go in.
Food was good and it’s reasonably priced.
Drinks were okay, high premium liquor is available but it can get expensive, $14.00 USD per drink.
Staying at this resort you must get a golf cart to get into town! It’s the only way to move around and the most economical. I paid $25 USD for a taxi, one way trip to town.

I am a 30 year old and I went with my friend. If you want to explore town, party, and go on excursions I wouldn’t recommend this resort. The town is about 20-30 minutes away, a lot of the bars and eateries are overlooking the ocean and they are beautiful!There’s also a myriad of hotels to choose from in town. I booked Captain Morgan's because I enjoy pool bars, though this resort had one, it was very quiet. If you stay in town, you probably won’t need a golf cart for too many days. I booked an excursion, they picked us up but we were far away from the service point.

All in all, I enjoyed Captain Morgan’s! But it’s definitely a place to go retreat. If this is what you want, then I would highly recommend it!!

A Very Nice Stay!

We loved staying at Captain Morgan's. Check-in was quick with friendly desk clerks. We were even given a complimentary rum punch on arrival. Our room was very nice and spacious, with a kitchenette, living/dining room, separate bedroom and bathroom. We also had a patio with two lounge chairs and table overlooking the beach and just steps from the water. All three pools and the beach were very clean. The only problem, and by no fault of the resort, was a lot of seaweed and murky water. The resort groundskeepers were busy raking seaweed from the beach, but it kept coming back. The first night and morning we ate at the resort's restaurant which was open air and overlooked the main pool. The dinner food was very good, but the breakfast was only so so and a little overpriced.Also at breakfast, Itried using the salt shaker, but the top was broken and salt spilled all over my plate. I told the waiter and he said he would get another salt shaker, not that he would get me a new plate of food. There is a small grocery store and tour desk at the hotel. The grounds are very pretty and have lots of tropical flowers and palm trees. There are several good restaurants within a few minutes drive by golf cart and Secret Beach is about twenty minutes away.

I loved staying in the villa! It was quiet and cozy. Didn’t hear our neighbors at all, yet if I wanted to strike up some conversation, I could do just that! The villa so close to the ocean was amazing! Getting up and watching the sun rise every morning was incredible!

The property is a nod to Belize instead of the Las Vegas strip. If you have a little sense of adventure it will work out, it is not an easy resort to get to and the check-in and check-out takes time.

Grounds are kept beautifully, but you can't enter the ocean from the beautiful beach. Like most of ambergris caye, the island is surrounded by eel grass. You have to go on a boat to get to nice water. The hotel is far north, advisable to rent a golf cart to get to restaurants.

Seaweed covered the beach and needed to be raked up.
Food from restaurant isn’t the best.
Renting a golf cart is an expensive process. Their processes aren’t computerized so everything is done on paper recepeipts and forms. We literally returned a golf cart and checked one out a couple hours later and had to start at square one again.
Staff is very nice. Beds are comfortable. Pools are clean and comfortable temperature.

Servers and bartenders were good but management is terrible. They want to overcharge you for every little thing. Be very careful with these owners. We asked for towels and they counted the dirty ones lol. They have a sign in the kitchen that threatens if you leave any dirty dishes or take any dishes out there’s a $75 US fee. The pool was nice, the place was clean, the security and staff were decent.

We enjoyed our stay at Captain Morgan's. The staff is friendly and helpful. Our condo, was one of the newly refurbished units. We were wowed by the first impressions of our condo- the equipment, decor everything looked very impressive. However, as we progressed in our stay, we realized that several of the upgrades were cosmetic. The dishwasher was rusted from inside, so was the iron board, though the bathrooms looked luxurious, the faucets were dated. I think they just need few extra finishes to make this condo really top notch the way it looks. Also, the pool with the walk up bar is supposed to be 24/7, but there are no pool lights past dark. Finally, there is a tour agency located in the property which can arrange for your golf cart, snorkelling and other trips but mind you that you will probably find cheaper options in town.
I would still recommend staying at Captain Morgan's. Its location is great, staff is good and ready to help and the facilities though need some updating despite the renovations, are good.

It was a totally fine place for a week. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The food was fine for breakfast but lunch and dinner should be had elsewhere for better options. Other hotel guests frequent the place and gave great suggestions. If I were to return to Belize, I’d consider staying here again.

The staff is amazing!

Everyone was so nice and accommodating! Chanel and the whole front office are amazing! Anything we needed or wanted they went out of their way to get. We went to Hol Chan and SharkRay Ally with Luis who did a great job showing us all sorts of things and making a great day for my kids. They set us up with a golf cart and directions to Secret Beach which was so beautiful and the food was great. We then went on another excursion with Devon to swim with manatees and search for seahorses to all of which we were able to do as well as hang out at Caye Caulker. Maggie was also so accommodating at the restaurant as far as changing a few items picky eaters wouldn't eat. Fluor really helped us by getting someone to come in so we could go swimming with the manatees.

We stayed for 4 nights in a beach cabana. The view was amazing. Staff at the front desk was very nice and helped us with planning excurisons and finding golf cart rentals last minute. Our room was tidied up daily. Drinks by the pool were delish. Would definitely recommend this to anyone going to Ambergris Caye.

Great Stay!

The resort was great. The staff went out of their way to make sure we were satisfied and our needs were met. Everyone was friendly and we felt at home. The beach was groomed every morning and the grounds were very clean. The front desk were there to help immediately with any questions we had. It was a great experience!

Great condo on beach

Large 3 bedroom condo 40 feet from the pool Was an excellent location to care to 2 small children ( 20 months and 4 months) as we were still able to have fun outside while they napped. Staff was gracious and helpful. Condo clean ...... Felt safe and had a great time

This place needs a serious refresh.

There are so many little things wrong at Captain Morgan that it adds up to a generally disappointing experience. Torn sheets and towels, flickering lights, an A.C. unit that shot out ice onto our heads at 4:30 in the morning, a broken coffee maker, etc. It just seems that no one is really paying attention to the condition of the rooms. Bathroom doors don't close, one of the TVs doesn't work...if I continued to think about it, I'd just be more annoyed about the price/value ratio. The place has potential and the people that worked there were GREAT! When we brought things to their attention, they were very helpful. But, after a while, I just got tired of going to the front desk to request help. We tolerated it and didn't spend much time in the room.

Captain Morgans north of San Pedro

The best part of our stay at Captain Morgan’s was the free access to sea kayaks and snorkeling gear that allowed us to paddle out near the coral reef, to anchor our kayaks and snorkel straight off the beach. The real downside is the fact that the area is very spotty with many stretches of dirty beach in front of half-constructed hotel sites that are seemingly abandoned. The water in front of the hotel is also very filled with seaweed and not a good spot for swimming.
