Smallest single room I have stayed in but bathroom good. Would have been ok if it was cleaned. Heating didnt work on one of the coldest nights, told guy behind bar, he came to check and said it should work now but he didnt really do anything to radiator that I hadnt tried. Room next door in and out all night until midnight. Horrible smell in corridors. Other than that had free on site parking and were friendly enough.

Room was quirky!
The single bed was higher off the ground than you'd expect because a normal bed clearly would not fit in the space. It was adapted to go over some boxed in pipe works.

Bedding was lovely and clean as were the towels.
Shower/loo clean but there was a small leak from the pedestal basin. The heated towel rail did not heat and shows signs of being overdue for replacement.

TV will only turn on or off using the SKY remote control. You cannot change channels so it's BBC1 or nothing.

Breakfast was genuinely great.

This is an old pub in an old town run by, what appears to be, one very hard working gent. Make allowances for the overall appearance of the place and you will be fine.

Nice little pub with a few rooms. I had a single room which was cosy but perfect for the one night I stayed. Room was generally clean and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom looked like it had recently been renovated. Breakfast was a full english and was a good size and very tasty. The property is about a 5 minute walk from the town centre shops and eateries, and also close to St Edmondsbury Cathedral and the priory ruins.

Had to find parking a couple of streets away. Clean room and bathroom. TV was annoying to operate and poor sound. Plenty of teabags etc in the room, something that many places are stingy with. Breakfast was fab. Only one choice, full breakfast, but it was really good. Huge pot of coffee. Very happy with my stay.

Bury st edmonds Beer festival visit

Room was small , bed high but comfortable , tv was quite good plenty of channels , plenty of tea / coffee available , toilet and shower area ok , on the bad side i paid for a breakfast to be told i had to get up for 7.30 to have it due to traders / workers needing a early start ! , i declined getting up for that reason , quite a noisy pub lots of door slamming from 6.30 am onwards , and something was running like a extraction fan all night outside my window until the early hours of the morning , but i slept reasonably well . Did,nt see much of the host , but i went to the b/festival most of the day and returned after the pub had shut did,nt see anyone when i left at 9.50 am , left the key on the table by the hallway door , for b.s Edmunds its cheaper than most b&b,s but compared to the one i stayed in the night before , for £13 more and a room 3 times the size a double bed and breakfast in bed and more upto date , greene king you need to improve your game .

The room was dirty. Draws filled with rubbish from previous stayer. The bed was used that much you couldn't sleep without rolling into the middle again almost a v shape! Sheets smelt foisty. Breakfast was at 830!? That's it. So when you are working, which I was, this was a struggle. First day extractor fan wasn't working so had a knock on the door, \"sorry the extractor fans not working so no breakfast, here's a 10er for something\". The landlord was pleasant enough however they just shouldn't have a b and b above as there is clearly no knowledge of how a room should be kept or presented. The actual positioning is great and it cost 170 for 2 nights, which I understand is fairly cheap, however cleanliness is a must and a bit of air freshener or something would've helped too. Oh, and a clean bed. All in all id pass on this one, I stopped in the bushel the week before and there was no comparison. And pretty much the same cost! Book the bushel for being central and swerve this one!!! Unless you want the Fawlty towers experience 👍

The room was fine unfortunately it overlooked the pub courtyard where people were singing and shouting til approx 1230am. Also an external fan which was situated near the room was running all night. Due to it being a very hot night we needed the windows open. Resulting in very little sleep.

No frills accommodation.

It is what it is, cheap and cheerful accommodation. Room could have been cleaned to a better standard. You might need a set of earplugs was a constant banging of doors until midnight and a fan of some sorts running outside the room. Single room is very small and bed was lumpy and I felt like I had to climb into the bed. En-suite facilities were ok but shower cubicle and head were not clean.
Breakfast was cooked fresh and was ok.
For the price, you can’t go wrong but with a little bit of general cleanliness and tidy up it could be a fantastic place to stay.

A piece of old Bury St Edmunds.

This is a basically C19th Inn, although some of it might be older. The room was clean and bright, the en-suite shower the same. Tea/coffee and kettle &c provided in the room. Bed fairly comfortable. Two things that were not so good: there was no hot water from the hand basin tap - no water at all in fact - and this could not be rectified until after the weekend (I booked in Saturday afternoon). All Ok in the shower. I could not open either the bedroom window nor the bathroom one, both sash windows painted and stuck. Secondary double glazing over both did not help, and the space between that and the window panes could do with the network of cobwebs being cleared out. Sunday morning breakfast was a problem for the place, as the breakfast maid had not appeared. Mine Host therefore cooked the full English himself - which was very good and well done. Nothing apart from that such as cereal or bread/toast was on offer. I saw only the innkeeper - who may be running the place more or less single-handed - but he was friendly and helpful. The place is well sited as it is only a short walk to the Abbey/Cathedral area, or the Market Place and new shopping centre. It is quiet and in one of the many attractive old streets of the town. Bearing in mind what the place is and what it is not, I was generally satisfied with my stay and would go there again.

You’re staying upstairs of a pub. This helps give a feel for being a local. Welcoming proprietor.
There were shrimp shells left in the sink. I’m sure just missed. And the pub tended to be noisy until maybe 11.
I appreciated how convenient it was to town. Parking was technical, but super convenient.

They were able to accommodate an early breakfast time to suit my work schedule. There were a couple of maintenance issues during my visit and staff were keen to correct these. Good pressure and plenty of hot water from the shower. Fresh towels midweek. Lots of local recommendations. A great stay!

Stayed here for a night while passing through. Initially attracted by the price which was a little cheaper than others in the area and I try to stay in pubs where possible rather than budget chain hotel type places.

Found the whole experience to be really lovely.

The room was basic, pretty much as I had expected but was clean throughout and had all the amenities I really needed: tea & coffee, towels, en-suite & shower.
Couldn't ask for more really.

Staff were friendly and welcoming as was the atmosphere in the bar below.
No food available in the evening but there are plenty of places to eat nearby so you're really spoiled for choice.

Breakfast was at 8:30 and a full English which was really tasty. It set me up for the day.

If you need a simple bed in a warm, friendly environment you need look no further.

The place was in a central location, staff were great, both Khrish and Chris , it was very clean in the room and bathroom
Breakfast was ok. (one choice of time on Sunday 8:30 or 8:30, instant coffee and fry up)
The reason for the low mark is:- I stayed there for somewhere to sleep but the single mattress was very poor quality so I had to sleep on the pillow also because it was a pub there were people outside my window talking laughing etc then management clearing up till 1am.
Also a large Aircon or heating unit on the roof outside, rumbled on and off thoughout the night

This property should be struck from any list that advertises stays. The room was no bigger than a broom cupboard and when we went to shower we discovered that there was no hot water. We obviously complained only to be told that they were having a new boiler installed and dint know when there would be any hot water. This had obviously been preplaned so any guests that were booked in should have been warned about this. We cancelled our booking and found other accommodation. This was without doubt the worst accommodation that we have ever come accross. AVOID

seriously disappointing!

The pub was a really old and historic. My room was dirty. The tv remote did not work. The hot water tap in the sink did not work. The net curtain was tatty and frayed down both edges. Part of the other curtain came off its rail. the window ledge was black with dirt. The bottom of the toilet bowl was brown! The bathroom radiator paint was chipped and had brown stains on it!. The shower runners were really dirty. The noise from some kind of \"generator\" outside my window was very noisy , and came on and went off all night long. The room was very small, and therefore very stuffy without the window open. No decaf tea nor decaf coffee for breakfast. There is much to be done to bring this room up to scratch!
The ladies toilet in the pub bar area was very dirty, no toilet roll..
A shame, as it s a very central location.

The only grumble Ihave was that despite putting the fact that I am vegan on the booking form, no provision was made - no plant based milk or margarine and no understanding of what a vegan breakfast might be. Although I was given a very nice beans on toast with tomato and mushrooms.
Expedia rally should ensure that its providers hav e anunderstanding of vegetarian and vegan diets - it is down to them to provide education on that subject. Not difficult. Take responsibility.

Great, nicely priced accommodation

A nice place to stay and at a very good price. Rooms are very comfortable and the breakfast very good too. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The pub bar is good with some nice real ales. Rooms suffer a little from noise from neighbouring ones - but hey... you would probably expect that to be the case. Would certainly stay there again!

Some people may find the noise from the pub downstairs makes it difficult to sleep (my husband did), but the beds were so comfortable that it did not bother me at all. The parking is tight but it was great to have a designated space, and the proprietor was very helpful with getting in and out. The breakfast was fabulous, and we LOVED the town.

Chill, friendly and comfortable stay

As a socially anxious non-drinker I'm always a little wary of pub stays but went for this as it was close to The Apex venue. My worries were unfounded however as even returning back on a Friday night the pub was calm and not really a party type pub. Plus there is a back/side entrance option if you did want to avoid going through the bar. Staff v accomodating, offered to let me drop my stuff in the room before coming back down to pay and filled my water bottle up before I left in the morning also. Bed was a bit high which could be awkward if short like me but was very comfortable with storage space underneath it (hence the height) and nice compact en suite. There was also a spare blanket incase of being cold! Would stay here for a show at The Apex again.

A lovely Olde Worlde pub, with a well stocked bar. Friendly & helpful enough staff. Small but adequate warm, white room. Lovely hot electric power shower. Filling, well cooked, set 'Full English' breakfast & white toast presented before you, in bar area. Could choose tea, coffee or decaf. Range of jams & marmalade. Told that at moment due to after effects of Covid they could not provide evening meals, but helpfully directed to other venues who could.
Soft, flat pillows, needed to bolster them. TV kept loosing reception every few minutes. Guess due to historic construction of building other people's movements could be heard.
However, overall I enjoyed my stay.

Conveniently-located, quite pub inn

I go to Bury St Edmunds to see shows at The Apex theatre, and this pub is ideal for this, being less than 5 minutes walk away. It is very near to the town centre, just a few minutes' walk down a quiet street, and about 15 minutes' walk from the train station.
The rooms have everything you need for a short stay. Beds are comfortable - with extra bedding provided for cold nights - and the shower is efficient. My only complaint would be that the radiators don't seem to work, but this was not really an issue as I did not spend much time in the room.
Would stay again next time I go to Bury St Edmunds.

Set within 1, 800 acres of Suffolk parkland, The Ickworth is a place where grand history and relaxed family escapes come together effortlessly. Just outside the historic market town of Bury St Edmunds, this striking country house hotel sits on the edge of the National Trust’s Ickworth Estate, offering families the freedom to slow down, reconnect and explore at their own pace.

At the heart of the estate stands the remarkable Rotunda, an architectural masterpiece inspired by classical Italy. Originally built as a home for the Hervey family, the Marquesses of Bristol, its distinctive domed shape has become one of Suffolk’s most recognisable landmarks.

Step inside and you’ll uncover stories woven through centuries of art, travel and craftsmanship, from ornate interiors to one of Europe’s most significant collections of 18th-century silver. The gardens bring another layer of beauty to the estate.

The Italianate garden wraps elegantly around the Rotunda, blending formal planting with dramatic views across the Suffolk countryside. Hidden corners, seasonal blooms and peaceful pathways make every wander feel like a quiet adventure.

There’s always something new to spot, whether it’s spring blossom, golden autumn leaves or deer grazing in the distance. What makes The Ickworth truly special is the way it balances heritage with ease.

It is grand without feeling formal, peaceful without ever feeling quiet, and full of opportunities to create the kinds of family memories that linger long after the journey home. Whether visiting for a countryside escape, a celebration or simply a few slower days together, The Ickworth invites families to experience Suffolk in a way that feels both timeless and wonderfully relaxed.

LONG MELFORD, SUDBURY, Hall Street, 2 Cleeve Cottage, 1 0 .

Show on Google Maps

The hotel, dating back to 1450, is prominently situated in the center of Long Melford, boasting the longest high street in East Anglia. Long Melford offers a wealth of interesting gift and antique shops, featured in the 'Lovejoy' TV series, and two stately homes, Melford Hall and Kentwell Hall, known for its Tudor weekends.

Nearby, explore splendid Suffolk wool towns like Lavenham and the popular Quay Theatre. Sudbury's bus and railway stations are just 4.

8 km away, while Stansted, Norwich International, and London Luton Airports are approximately 56 km, 97 km, and 140 km away, respectively. The hotel's original timber work, both inside and out, is remarkably well-preserved, with the exterior discovered in 1935 after the removal of a century-old brick façade.

A 'Wildman' or 'Woodwose' carving, a medieval symbol believed to ward off evil spirits, adorns a beam in the lounge. Guests immediately sense the building's history upon entering the hall, dominated by massive molded oak beams.

Once the town's principal posting house during the coaching era, accommodating travelers from London, Bury St Edmunds, and Norwich, today's guests can relax by the beautiful Elizabethan fireplace in the lounge and admire antique carvings in the Cordell Restaurant. The hotel offers 25 non-smoking guest rooms, a bar, internet access, and ample parking.

THETFORD, King Street, . 0 .

The hotel enjoys an ideal location at the centre of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. The 12th century Thetford Priory is within walking distance.

Thetford Forest is just 8 km away, while Oxburgh Hall and the nearby Water Gardens are about 20 km from the hotel. Also worth a visit is Bressingham, with its Steam Museum and Garden.

Thetford bus and train stations are both within a 500-metre radius of the property. Norwich Airport is approximately 56 km from the hotel, while London Stansted Airport is some 88 km away and London Luton Airport is about 113 km away.

The property was originally a seminary, but under Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries it was sold as an inn in 1540 and renamed The Bell. The sense of history is enhanced by the fact that this accommodation retains much of its original character.

Tudor wall paintings were discovered from an old open gallery in 1938, when layers of wallpaper were stripped away. These paintings can now be seen preserved behind glass in one of the bedrooms.

Also famous as the home of the cast and crew of the television series 'Dad's Army', Thetford features throughout the series, providing backdrops to many of the programme's scenes. The hotel comprises a total of 46 guest rooms and is non-smoking throughout.

Facilities on offer include a lobby, a restaurant and Internet access. The comfortable en suite bedrooms each include a telephone, daily housekeeping, a television and tea and coffee making facilities.

A shower, a bathtub, a double or king-size bed, a radio, Internet access and an iron and ironing board all come as standard. The restaurant specialises in good simple English food.

The bar also serves delicious meals, together with traditional ales.
