Great location. Very nice staff.
BUT Extremely noisy room. No soundproofing as advertised. We listened to neighbours conversations, music and snoring. The bathroom floor was not properly washed. The room was stuffy so frequently had to open the window.

The hotel was on the second floor and situated in an older Spanish building. (A lift was available). The staff and I got by with my very little Spanish. There was a map on the wall and a tear off copy which was very handy. It is close to Anton Martin tube station which with a little planning can get you all round Madrid. There are a lot of restaurant/cafes and the hotel is close to a square with more. I found a supermarket quite close.

Didn’t get the room I paid for when I arrived. Night staff was apologetic and did what he could to get my room the next day. The next morning was different. Lady at the counter talked to me like I was inconveniencing them. Very rude and condescending. Said “this is a hostal” but the the website clearly stated with photos king bed with balcony. I got a double bed with a lovely view of the back of the building and no balcony. I wasn’t even asking for anything extra. She was upset we had to make the change.
The hostal itself is just alright. Old and in need of renovation. If I really wanted to make a fuss, I should ask for compensation since there is a difference in price for the two rooms.

Decent value for the price, but the room was tiny and cleanliness left something to be desired. There was mold in the shower and on the bathroom ceiling, and the blankets on the beds had visible stains/discoloration/potentially also mold. Room was tidied daily, but could use a good deep clean.
Location is great - 10 minute walk to Plaza Mayor, a Metro stop within a block or two - with plenty of good food/coffee/shopping nearby, and beds were comfortable.

I really liked the staff at this hostel, they were so kind and helpful! There was a match going on so prices in Madrid were high, but this wasn’t bad. Small room but great location and communication. Comfortable beds, a bit of noise from the street and next room, though it has been far worse in other places I’ve stayed here. I felt safe and welcome, so that was the most important to me!

Rooms are very small and in need of renovation, specially the bathrooms. Shower looks gross. There was dirt under the bed. Bed was okay, however it had just one long pillow on it; not good for two people to share.

Enjoyed my stay at Hostal Castilla. All of the employees I interacted with were kind, patient, insightful and helpful. My room was small, but worked for one person. It was clean, it had air conditioning and a mini fridge. Although I was a little nervous when I walked into the building and there were other hostals in the same building, it was safe and the location was close to many tourist sights. It was good for the price, just depends on what you're looking for.

Pay the extra $30 and stay at a different place

We arrived around 8pm to find that the room we were assigned was different than the one we booked. We booked a room with a King bed. We were assigned a double bed. I was expecting a small room but the bed was to be large enough for 2. This room and bed was not. The front desk told me there were no rooms with king beds. I sent a message to my contact agent via text about the issue. They told me that a double bed in Spain is equivalent to a king bed in the USA. This is a lie! I stayed at 4 different places while in Spain on this trip and I had an actual King sized bed in 2 of them the other was a queen bed. I then sent them the listing of the posting online in Hotels.com that I booked. It clearly says King bed (there are other listings that site single bed, double bed,). So the bottom line is they took my money and did not provide me with the room I paid for. At the time I had no choice but to stay. They made no concession or any attempt to accommodate or remedy this situation. The only positive is the location. This stay was the lowest point of our trip to Spain. I hold Hostal castilla and Hotels.com accountable. This was a failure on both institutions. We paid far to much for the accommodations and service provided ($170/night). My advice would be to pay the extra $30 at a competing hotel and stay there. Avoid this hotel.

I loved staying here. It's in a really convenient part of the city, close to Puerta Atocha and has a great plaza with good restaurants nearby. I had lots of questions about how to book train tickets and get around the city, and the staff was so knowledgeable and helpful. You can't beat the price for the location.

Rooms were pretty small with not a lot of space to put your luggage. Walls were paper thin as well, so you could clearly hear convos in the rooms next door. Overall everything was clean and check in was easy.

The location was superb, being very close to the centre of Madrid and all the eateries and shops. The staff were very helpful. The room had excellent air conditioning and a safe, but no fridge. Security was excellent. The building, to be fair, was an old one which had upgraded facilities, but the little nooks and crannies could be criticised. Madrid’s taxi service is very good, and we were a 10 Euro ride from the main railway station.

We actually stayed at Hostel Castille II which is a five minute walk away from HC I. Easy check in and surprisingly large room. There was enough room for our suitcases. The bathroom was clean and there was plenty of hot water. It was steps from Puerta del Sol so easy access to/from the metro. We could hear a little noise from other rooms but it wasn’t disruptive. Staff were friendly and helpful.

My experience in Hostel Castilla I was excellent. beside the very reasonable price for the stay,, add excellent location ( it was so centrally located that all the mayor points of interest were at 15 minutes walk), metro station at a 4 minute walk, a very attentive and knowledgeable staff and you have the perfect location for your stay in Madrid. The rooms were very clean and got house keeping daily, the same can be said for the bathroom, also very important was the fact that the beds and pillows were very comfortable (something that is not always the case in stays in Europe. This is an incredible bargain anyway you look at it. The Plaza del Angel, Plaza del Sol, Plaza de Armas all are located at a stone throw away. You can also go to many restaurants, bars and markets located in the same street as the hotel. And last but not the least it is very important that I mention Petra and Irene who made everything on their part to please and satisfy all our needs during the stay. Irene speaks fluently in English, Spanish. Remember this is a Hostel not a hotel. The rooms are small and don't have luxury amenities. But if you are like us we only need a place with the basics, TV, bathroom, comfy bed, room temperature regulator, clean, good location and great staff , this is the place to go. Highly recommended.

Great location for tourism, central to main sights in Madrid and ~ 10-15 minute walk to Atocha train station. Room was small but clean and comfortable, and included hot water kettle. The hotel takes up half a floor in a bigger building; to enter, you'll often have to ring them at the building's entrance door, then ring their doorbell once you get to the correct floor. It was a slight bother but the staff was always responsive and let me in quickly. Staff was friendly overall -- they sent me a text via WhatsApp prior to my stay to get my estimated check-in time and answer any questions I had.

A very pleasant hostel in th heart of Madrid.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I arrived having never stayed in a hostel before. But to my delight this hostel proved to be one of my best stays abroad. The staff were acceptionally helpful, the facilities although basic were of a high standard. The location was in perfect walking distance of all amenities eg. Restaurants, museums, theatres, parks,bars, clubs, shopping, tourist information and much more. Great hostel highly recommended.

The hostel could not of been in a better position. A little bit of traffic and street noise but I very much doubt that it is any different anywhere else in such a busy city. The douvet had some odd looking marks on it but apart from that A1. Would stay again in a heartbeat.

Terrific place and reasonable price

We stayed for fur nights to visit Madrid after walking the Camino de Santiago and before flying home to the US. It was easy to walk to from the Atocha station, and was very close to a Metro station. Super easy to walk to Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Retiro Park and the art museums. Small but very clean room. There was no hair dryer in the room but we asked for one at reception and kept it in the room for all 4 days. My bed was a little soft, but otherwise everything was great. The room had everything we needed and it was very economical.

Strong wifi, which is a huge plus for me (and far from guaranteed in Europe). On return trips to Madrid I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else.

Great hostel (more like hotel)! Location is less than 10 min walk from plaza mayor and right next to Anton Martin metro station. It's a small room but includes AC, closet, and bathroom with cleaning service. I found a nail in my sheets, gross, but other than that we enjoyed our stay!

Perfect for a cheap stay. Rooms were clean with everything needed. A bit old and would require some need bed covers but still ok. I would suggest bringing ear plugs though since walls are pretty thin. Really centric and near downtown, near metros and the renfe train station.

We enjoyed staying here- it's a cozy place, with all the basics that you need. The staff was very nice! It's perfect if you're on a budget and find yourself wanting to explore Madrid. It gets a little loud, especially if your room faces the street and the Madrid nightlife, but if you are enjoying the nightlife yourself, then- who cares! ;)

I had booked this Hostel based on positive reviews and was not disappointed. It was a business trip and I spent 6 nights. I had a double room all to myself on the second floor hostel. The building houses several hostels and is served by an elevator. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The room was a bit small as expected but clean and tidy. My room overlooked the street and it was very noisy into the wee hours, mainly with screaming of drunk youngsters. I would strongly recommend the hostel for leisure and business travel.

Can't say enough good things about Castillia I. It's staff are friendly and helpful, there are also plenty of publications and flyers available in the foyer if you need anything. The rooms are cosy with air conditioning, wi-fi and all the usual trimmings. If you want to budget hotel at a fair price then I would highly recommend a stay here! It is ideally located for the Anton Martin stop, and is five minutes walk away from the central hub of Madrid. There are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants in close proximity, so plenty to keep you entertained during your stay!

This small hostal was great. It's in a building with several other hostals. The room was very small but clean. It had a large closet and a small desk. Air conditioning worked well in HOT Madrid. The bathroom was also small but clean. Our room was on the interior courtyard so noise was never a problem, but it may be louder if you get a room facing the street. The location is very good. It's a 5-10 minute walk to Sol and about the same to Plaza Mayor. So you are very close to the main tourist sights but don't have to deal with the noise and hagglers in the plazas. When looking for the hostal, look up for signs on the building saying Hostal Castilla and Hostal Cervilo. The reception was up two flights of stairs, but there is also an elevator. The staff were friendly yet speak little English. But they were very patient listening to my broken Spanish and were eventually able to answer questions/concerns. If you want a basic, clean room in a great location, this is a good place.

Just a small little hotel, nothing particularly luxurious but also a great value for the money. If you're not looking for anything spectacular, just a decent, clean place to stay for a few nights in Madrid, it's a safe bet. You won't get anything extra, but it'll do what you needed it for. Friendly service (not sure if they speak English or not), a good location, air conditioning, good showers, and very clean.

Great Location, very helpful people

Although it's categorized as a hostel, I would say it's a budget friendly hotel. There's so much to see in Madrid that by the time you get to your hotel room you are just looking forward to a comfortable good night sleep in your room. Castilla provided that along with the convenience of wifi. Their wifi was very key to helping us plan our day and our next trip. The location is perfect, it's tourist friendly, yet you feel like you're in the mix with the locals. Train stations are w/in 5 min walk. Very close to the central gathering point, Plaza del Sol where everyone seems to just want to hang out even at 3am. Great place for you couples.

A very decent place. Inexpensive, well-placed. Walking distance to museums, Sol, Lavapies, etc. Close to good cafes and restaurants. Also only a block from the metro station. A good budget value.

Beds just okay, but about what you'd expect for the price. Also not the quietest place in the world, but then what do you expect in Madrid? If you need silence at night, stay in five-star hotel or pack some earplugs.

I don't know if any of the employees speak English, but they're very helpful.

Firstly this place is very basic, it is a hostal not a hotel. The room had a small double bed, wardrobe and your own toilet, bathroom and TV. Which when your in exploring a city this is all you really need, its really just a base. The place was clean and the receptionists were very friendly and helpful.
The main gem for this place is the location, it was brilliant for seeing all the major sights and just around the corner was the best square for bars and resturants called Plaza de Sta Ana.
If your looking for a cheap hotel as a base you can't go wrong with this hostal.

Peu de prestation, ménage pas automatique mais sur demande (heureusement qu'ils m'ont prévenu, pas parfait, odeur horrible dans la chambre, premier jour tabac (alors que c'est non fumeur), canalisation ensuite, reflux des toilettes.

Situation géographique parfaite. Pour le reste je n'y retournerai pas.

Si buscas un lugar cercano a Sol está ok. A mejorar el ruido. Las personas tiran la puerta principal del hostal irrumpiendo el sueño a altas horas de la noche y el piso superior super escandalosas las pisadas las sentía en mi cabeza hasta pasada la media noche, resumen no logramos dormir en paz.

Très bon séjour, je recommande.
Très bonne situation pour explorer la ville à pied et venir de la gare Atocha même tard, et pour dîner, petit déjeuner.
Prix raisonnable et chambre, immeuble, réception très propres. Bon accueil.
Bon confort, seul bémol : on entend le bruit de la rue (je n’ai pas pensé à demander une chambre sur cour) et les autres clients hélas pas très discrets.

Son muy pequeñas las habitaciones pero súper limpias. Buenos muebles. Lindo colchón y almohadas. Baño excelente. Todo pequeño pero muy limpio. Bueno para gente que viaja sola o 2 personas máximo y pocos días. Me resultó un poco claustrofóbico. Pero en líneas generales es bueno para uno o 2 días.

Comodo alla metro ed a piedi si arriva in 5 minuti a Plaza Mayor, camere pulite, non grandissime ma accoglienti e accessoriate di tutto (asciugacapelli,multipresa con vari accessi x usb, bollitore e frigo). Unica pecca, molto rumoroso
