Very nice breakfast with lots of choices. Also enjoyed the bar at the hotel, the bartender made wonderful espresso martinis!
The room was very nice but not very soundproof. It is not the hotels fault but we did have very noisy neighbours which made it difficult to sleep our first night.

A nice welcome at the property and the room was large and facilities fine. The first floor outside the room was fairly dark with litttle lighting, this did make the trip from top of the stairs to the room a little difficult, especially having come in from a very bright day.
Breakfast was fine, although the same everyday.
The bar was not always manned, with bar staff often doing other tasks and causing long waits. Some bar staff would attend to people at tables outside, others would not, meaning a walk to the bar.
Finding the hotel was a problem as despite the car having Sat-Nav, La Rochelle does not seem to like the motor car and one-way streets meant getting close and then forcing you away, also the SatNav did not know about 'rising bollards' that prevent access to exactly where you want to go. Once we found the Place du Verdun car park, where we could abandon the car and walk a block, we were fine. The price of parking was reasonable.

We really liked this hotel. Location was pretty central and there is a public car park very close by. All the staff were very lovely. Breakfast was good. We were given a room upgrade to one with a balcony, which was great. The walk to the seafront wasn't too far. The only suggestion was that it would have been nice for the hotel to have made more use of its courtyard garden (maybe some outdoor lights for the evening).
Overall a lovely hotel and we had a very good stay.

Really lovely old hotel in a quiet spot just outside La Rochelle’s old town. Everything’s within walking distance, which made it very convenient. Our room on the second floor was big, clean, and comfortable, with a street view. The garden out back is a great place to relax. We didn’t use the spa or restaurant, but the reception staff were helpful throughout our stay.

Great central location. Comfy bed. Fantastic friendly staff without exception. Extremely welcoming and great touch of dog bowls and biscuits. Some TLC needed in parts but overall stunning. Amazing breakfast for a celiac. The only drawback is no onsite secure parking but there is plentiful public parking only 90 seconds walk away.

Really beautiful hotel in a great area. Our room was quiet and spacious, and the bed was really comfortable. High ceilings, discrete decor and well appointed bathroom.
The car park was a public one, about 200 meters away from the hotel, but was reasonably priced and very secure.

classed as a four start which is stretching a little - although clean and resnably comfortable the room we had really didnt live up to a four star hotel room - a shower over a very narrow bath, the shower itself was a trickle and the towels nearly threadbare and very thin.
The bed was in an alcove of sorts and quite difficult to move around it. parking was offsite, quite close but a public carpark

First time to La Rochelle - had to use a public car park but it's just a street away. Off season so a skeleton staff - friendly and good English- but tiny part-time bar and expensive breakfast we didn't try. Had a nice terrace over looking a garden that was a touch... post apocalyptic- but it was quiet and the room we had all we needed. Lovely spacious building and very nicely located.

The hotel is conveniently located near to the bus terminal so making it ideal for arrival & departure from airport. We loved the central location with everything a short stroll away incl shops, cafes & quay etc.
Staff were very welcoming & helpful when needed. Our room was lovely, big, quiet, clean & serviced regularly.

The staff at reception were faultlessly kind and helpful. The building has maintained its history in the public rooms. The bedroom was very clean, a comfortable large bed and fully equipped bathroom. It is not a 4 stars hotel at all more 3 stars. No frigo in the room, no coffee machine only cheap instant coffee, no robe, very cheap an almost dark towel like a motel.

Hotel inside is very nice with a nice garden where you could take a drink. Staff is very nice and help full. Should increase comfort in the room. Very sad a nice hotel like this with so poor amenities.

Tired public areas, they were short staffed so bar was closed. Rooms nice and newly decorated. You could see the hotel was nice in its day with some classical features. Very convenient location. Claimed ‘parking available’ but very limited space so we parked in the public car park 2mins walk away which was very good; big spaces.

Very close to the bus station which is very convenient yet surprisingly quiet and peaceful. Lovely old building with a good size private rear garden where guests can take breakfast or just lounge in the sun. Internally the decor and furniture would not be out of place in a stately home. It has character. Friendly and helpful staff make it a very pleasant experience. This was our second visit but will not be the last.

Following a flight cancellation, this was an overnight stop book at the last minute. As it was low season, and the hotel not very busy, we were upgraded to a superior room, which was extremely comfortable. The adjacent private car park was very convenient, but should be booked in advance as spaces are limited. Good selection of restaurants around the indoor market, within easy walking distance.

Lovely old French Hotel in a quiet area of town.

This Hotel is in an area away from the hustle and bustle of the harbour area.
The staff are lovely and very helpful and the rooms are spacious with excellent bathrooms.
The big bonus is the beautiful garden for breakfast or a pre-dinner drink.
We stayed five nights and explored both La Rochelle and the Isle de Ra (by bus which is a bargain at 5 euros for the whole day)
Part of the Hotel was an old monastery and has a very ornate staircase.
The one problem that may cause some people problems is that it has not got a disables access and there are several steps to the entrance to the building.

Hotels must have two things beyond all else, comfort and helpful staff. The Hotel Champlain has these in abundance. Add to them elegant decoration, and furnishings from the Belle Epoque and bathrooms full of 21st Century style, and a guest can relax in style. This hotel has more than a touch of class.

Finding the hotel by car was a little fraught - narrow one-way streets, traffic, cyclists, pedestrians. But the location in the city centre meant we could walk everywhere and we left the car in secure parking (available for an extra charge) next to the hotel. The hotel was quiet and comfortable though lacking in public amenities (only a bar and a breakfast room). We didn't have breakfast as it seemed over-priced for what was on offer. The reception staff were very helpful.

We stayed in a very attractive and spacious prestige room in the old part of the hotel. The decor, period furnishings, including comfortable chairs, and space added to our enjoyment. Staff were helpful and charming. The location, close to the fin de siecle Cafe de la Paix, where we breakfasted, was excellent.

Beautiful hotel with a classic vintage feel to it. The staff were friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. Our room was beyond our expectations, with high ceilings, tasteful furnishings and a bed that was everything that comfortable and luxurious should be. A superb headquarters for visiting La Rochelle

The Champlain is a beautiful hotel with classic character befitting the surrounding architecture of La Rochelle, a superbly helpful staff and very comfortable rooms. Access to the city center is approximately a 10 minute walk and there are many interesting shops along the way. A large underground parking garage is also conveniently located nearby.

The concierge staff is very knowledgeable about where to go for the best eating experiences nd which restaurants represent the greatest volume.

My only criticism is a small one. I visited in mid-October and the temperature was a bit warmer than normal for that time of year. However, the hotel shuts off the air conditioning system nd fans after September so no cooling was available for my room other than by opening the window.

I have stayed twice at this hotel. We love it. The Superior rooms are large and bright, with old fashioned charm. The Location is great and the staff more than helpful.

The bar is small but nice, never really busy, very reasonable.

The garden is super loads of roses like my grandma kept.
