Christmas break that was restful

I usually stay by the Acropolis in Athens but wanted a peaceful, quiet Christmas stay and was given room 103 as was upgraded free in the true spirit of Christmas .
The male receptionist is extremely friendly and his English language is excellent.
I was given a large comfortable room to relax inside and breakfast was even served on Christmas and Boxing Day, the boiled eggs weee yummy and plenty of cereals and cheese to cater for my pescatarian diet .
Lots of restaurants in the area that are reasonably priced for to eat supper and the historic places to visit are a reasonable 25 minute walk away .
So got the Christmas break I wanted and a friendly Greek welcome too.

They say it’s buffet but I got only eggs, youghurt, 5 slices of ham, 6
6 slices of cheese, honey & bread same. My room aircon is not working glad that it’s not summer. Staff is helpfully especially the big guy at night. He help me book taxi going to station. Walkable to Karissa Station going to the airport but if your flight is early like mine the you use the X95 at Stagarma Square

Walking distance from Athens Central Train Station

I reserved this hotel for the location. I will say the walk after dark was a bit sketchy, but the photos looked good.

The buildings outside looked very nice and I was greeted Greekly. Paid for my room and she then noticed I had a dog. I travel with a service dog. I was charged extra for that, handed my key and AC controller.

The room was unique along with the common areas. It was small and needed some upkeep. Bed was Okay and the AC worked. There was WiFi that was good and the shower, unusual as it was, had good hot water.

It has a tiny lift and a lot of common areas. Neighborhood is more industrial, with homeless people and a lot of graffiti. For one night by the train station, it works. There are much better options close to attractions for the same or less money.

I sleep there one night (because at night I didn't have where else to go) and then I preffered to look for another place. The man who did my check in was asking me a lot of personal questions and told me really unappropiate things. The room was really bad, it smelled a lot as cigarrate and moisure which you can see in the walls, there where cockroaches, and at night I can listen little paws walking in the walls or roof, the room had a window that went directly to the street and the window didn't had a lock, it seems that someone tried to get in and it was open, and the iron rods were so big that any person can pass throw it. The sheets and towels were dirty and with holes.

They asked me to pay again

I paid through hotel.com and get a receipt and supposed to pay 0.50 cent at the priority
I arrived from the airport at 11:50 PM and the hotel said that they cant get my payment so i have to pay again the whole amount or i have to leave
I alao paid extar for the breakfast and i get cold coffee that is not drinkable and old food that is not eatable
I have stayed in about 100 different hotels the last few years and this was the worst of all time

I arrived early for check in but clerk said my room was ready. Very happy about that. Upon check in, clerk showed me my room. It was fine but the air conditioner was blowing warm air. Clerk said it just took time to cool down. That sounded reasonable so I unpacked and took a nap. When I woke up the room was just as hot as it was in the morning. Went to the desk and told the clerk (night clerk now) that my air conditioning was not working. He went with me to the room and said that it was working since the fan was running. I told him the fan had been running for hours and not provided any cooling. I thought at that time he was going to let me change rooms and I followed him back to the front desk. The clerk went to his computer and made a phone call. I waited for a good 15 minutes as I thought he was making preparations for repair or to give me a different room. After waiting I walked up to the desk and the clerk asked “can I help you?” I said I thought you were checking about moving me to a new room because of the air conditioning. He said “you have trouble with air conditioning? I said “yes - you went with me to see the air conditioner was not working!” (Several more iterations of the previous conversation) Then the clerk said “the hotel has a problem, I just work here, there is nothing I can do “. At this point I called Travelocity service line and your service person solved the problem by getting directly in touch with the clerk and getting him to provide another room

Pushy front desk and dangerous neighborhood.

This hotel is reasonably priced for Athens, and the location of the hotel itself feels rather safe: but I would highly caution anyone against walking from this hotel to the center of Athens - prostitution, druggies, and trash along the 20 minute route, and definitely didn't feel safe on the streets there.

The hotel itself if fine: room was as expected, though we were told to leave the key at the front desk when we left: which seemed a bit risky given the general atmosphere of the area: front desk was a bit rude when we arrived: demanding that we pay the .50 euro 'tourist tax' immediately upon arrival even though we didn't have any change on us.

Might stay there again in a pinch, but probably would find somewhere else if possible.

The staff was excellent and extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is in an excellent location Vis a vis the Metro and National Railway. You can take Metro from the airport to Syntagma Station and then board the line to the Railway Station and the hotel is basically across the street! The cost is 10 Euros. It’s also just 7 minutes away from the Gazi Section of Athens for great nightlife!

Very nice hotel, only downside is the neighborhood is not so good if traveling by car, parking spaces were on the roadside and the staff expressed concerns about the safety of the car, e.g. advised not leaving anything visible inside.

Not a lot of coffeeshops/bakeries really close, only the (overpriced) kantine at the nearby rail road station.

The hotel is near a train station and it was super easy to get around Athens. The room was large with a little balcony and staff were friendly. The bathroom was tiny - you literally had to have your feet in the shower whilst on the loo. Also difficult to have a shower without flooding the bathroom. Not sure if all rooms are like this. Fine for us though!

It is located near Larissa Metro Station. Cheap price - and even cheaper service. I didn't pay a lot to stay here & yet it still a bit disappointed.Room 101 smelled like really old, and has 50 years old non-functional TV. It had a dust just under the table, like none cleaned a room for a year! The towels are old as well, cheap beds and sheets. Wifi is poor/slow.
Didn't eat their breakfast. I felt charging extra Euros for the optional breakfast was excessive.
Good for one night stay.

Be careful about thefts in the metro!

For a cheap hotel, it was alright. Couldn't get WiFi in the room, and the shower is tiny... and you have to hold showerhead with one hand (all rooms like this). My AC unit was not functional, but was comfortable without so no problem for me. Good location next to Metro station and train, easy walking distance to most sights.

Interesting short trip. Syrians sleep on the streets with the dogs. They all look half dead. Was difficult not donating the entire holiday budget to them, they are very grateful for anything you have to offer money food blankets.

Quiet hotel near a subway station

Hotel Diethnes is located in a very quiet area of downtown Athens, within a 4-minute walk of a subway station, 4 stops away from Syntagma Squate.

I booked a single room but got given a double room. The bed was very hard. There was a variable speed fan that allowed good air circulation, but opening the window brought in mosquitoies. Nevertheless, with the drapes closed, it was quite comfortable for sleep. The small fridge was very useful.

The buffet reakfast was quite sufficient: eggs, ham, cheese, yogourt, cereals, pastries, juice, tea and coffee.

Just don't go in the basement!

I think I must have booked two economy rooms, which I definitely DO NOT recommend. One of the rooms had no natural light and both were small and pretty old and stained. These were basement rooms and one of them had a very old but useful air con unit, the other had a fan.... which just blew warm air around. Definitely not good climate control (which was guaranteed in the description) in 40 degree weather. And HD tv? Well one room had it, but the other had a very small, blurry box tv which emitted a loud buzzing noise.....

But the real problem were the COCKROACHES (common in Greece) which we found in the hall, in our room (both dead) but then a live one under a bed and the worst one.... in our luggage. That was the last straw. The lady on reception was very sympathetic and got a fellow basement dweller to come and kill them with his boot... Topless. You can't make this stuff up. But she agreed eventually that it was a problem and we got moved upstairs which was like a different world. The rooms were spacious and light and the bedding even seemed nicer (though still a tad worn and old). So I would recommend these rooms for sure, 3/4*, great TVs too, but the basement rooms NO.

The hotel is listed as smoke free but unfortunately this can't be true as the lobby and hallways often had a strong scent to them as people obviously smoke there. The wifi was also a bit hit and miss and terrible in the basement. So nice hotel if you get the right room!!!

A hidden gem

I have nothing to complain. The staff were friendly enough. The hotel was right next to Larissa station so I could reach acropolis in 20 minutes, which was convient as wanted to see the sunrise from acropolis. Maybe the room was a bit worn down, but I didn't expect it to be deluxe. I didn't try the breakfast so can't comment on that. They changed the sheets and towels every day, which was nice.

It's a little bit hard to find since Apple maps did not bring us to the right address, but once we got there we were greeted with open arms. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. The room was a decent size, and we absolutely loved our balcony. However, the bathroom was kind of hassle because of it's very small size and the A/C worked but not very well. It's also a 5 minute walk from the metro, so very convenient. For the price, it's definitely worth it. You get what you pay for!

Cheap and no frills.

This hotel feels more like a hostel than a hotel. They expect you to leave your key at the front desk when you leave (presumably some have used it as a brothel before). This wouldn't be a problem if they didn't leave the key sitting right there on the desk for anyone to take. The room didn't have ANY available power outlets and the air conditioner didn't work very well. All in all I'd say to avoid this hotel unless you are a student, backpacker, or perhaps destitute.

I had a very pleasant stay at Diethnesnhotel. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The hotel is very well situated near a metro station that takes you in the heart of Athens in 10 minutes. Walking to the Acropole is even possible if you prefer. The room was clean and well furnished with a mini fridge. The only reserve I would have about this hotel is for someone who needs a very comfortable bed in order to sleep well. I am sensitive to comfort but I would still go back to this hotel for all the reasons mentionned above and the good value for being in such an amazing city

This is a very nice budget hotel. Close to a supermarket. Restaurant options nearby. Close to the metro. Close to the railway station, but very clean, safe and quiet neighborhood. Lots of hot water, good air conditioning, and a lift. The WIFI was fast, but it went offline a lot which was annoying. The staff was wonderful! I will return.

Recommending upstairs Rooms

The location of the Hotel is close to Larissa station and thats just a few stops from Acropolis station, so its pretty close to the main areas of Athens.
The staff is very friendly and helped us out a lot. Also they are at the counter 24 hours, so you don't need to worry about getting your keys if you arrive late.
We stayed at room 107, a room in the \"basement\" where you had to use a small, narrow staircase to get to the rooms. We had a small window and a view right onto the pavement and sometimes some cars parked in front of the window so everything was a bit dark and stuffy.
The bathroom was pretty small and the shower was tiny, we didn't enjoy the showering to get refreshed. It was clean enough to stay for a couple of nights, although the shower curtain and the cupboard in our room looked old.
Because of the sad view and the bad air circulation it would probably be nicer to stay in a room upstairs with a bigger window or even a balcony.
All in all, for the price we paid everything was fine and clean and the breakfast with eggs, yogurt etc was pretty good.

Booked 4 weeks in advance a twin. Upon arrival they offered us a double with tiny window in which you enter via a sauna claiming they were full even though we had booked far in advance a twin. Finally we did get a twin with a window facing a corridor! Avoid.

We only booked for one night for the convienience of getting to Larissa train station the next day. Most importantly it was clean enough and considering the age and run down conditon of the hotel 'you get what you pay for\". I would use again if I needed the same location again, Strangest thing was you had to hand your key back to reception when you went out for the morning even though you were not checking out.

Really wonderful Taverna nearby, owners very friendly (lent us their umbrella!) and full of advice, really interesting area, 2 mins walk from Metro station, we loved staying here. When we stayed it was two star and having stayed in characterless 3 and 4 star hotels before, we found this hotel to be have more individualism and Greek identity than more plastic alternatives. The breakfasts were delicious, varied, generous, and very healthy. Brilliant!

Clean, friendly, convenient

We were in Greece for six weeks, visiting different parts of the country, but always coming back to Athens. Greece is one of our favorite holiday destinations and we usually stay at a hostel in the Plaka. It was unavailable for our Fall 2014 arrival date, so we took advantage of the low rate offered by Diethnes. We liked it so much that we ended up staying there each time we returned to Athens. It is small but charming, very clean, with friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff. Breakfast was fresh, tasty, and satisfying. The room had a small fridge, which we stocked from the nearby Carrefour, and BBC news on the television, which is a comforting window on the world during a long trip. Before arriving, we had worried that the location, near Larissa Train Station, would be noisy or dangerous. Our concerns were unfounded. Although only five-minutes walk from the station, the hotel was an oasis of calm in a busy city. We used the adjacent metro stop -- it's a great deal, only 10 euros each for five-day tickets -- extensively, coming back as late as midnight, and were never bothered by anyone. That said, we were a couple (male and female) and not lone travelers. My husband went for a walk late one night, venturing deeper into the area, and later admitted to feeling a little uncomfortable. But that's to be expected in any major city. We heartily recommend Diethnes. Small hotels in Athens are excellent value in comparison to often overpriced and uncomfortable hostels.

Our weekend in Athens

The hotel staff were not very helpful when we asked for room heating to be turned on because the room was quite cold when we were there. The breakfast was advertised, in my itinerary, as 5 euros per person but when we asked at the reception they told us it cost 8 euros per person. The breakfast was a buffet and in my opinion not worth the money. There was not enough coffee, orange juice bread, cheese and no cooked food available and I got the impression that the hotel staff were just interested in saving money rather than accommodating their guests. The room was also in a state of unfinished renovation and there weren't enough electric wall sockets to plug in mobile phone chargers etc. Overall I thought the room was not very good value for money.

My room was supposed to have a balcony, fridge, tea/coffee-making facilities and separate seating area. It had none of these although only the balcony really mattered. It was in the basement. The room itself was otherwise ok.They were unable to give me a different room because they were full but they were completely unapologetic about this although the room description was written on my paperwork. The breakfast was ok - pretty basic but you could make toasties. I had a struggle initially as they tried to say breakfast wasn't included in my booking.
It is easy to get everywhere by metro from there but there is a lack of anywhere much to eat locally

Great little hotel that has a great location very close to the Metro/subway station and SUPER friendly staff. Awesome restaurant near by (The Station Grill) with AWESOME food and wonderful people at very reasonable prices and wonderful bakery near by. Hotel beds were firm but not uncomfortable. If going back to Athens would stay here again.

Don't expect much

We were given a room on the ground floor that was more like a bat cave than a hotel room. One window opened to a staircase and another window opened to a central air shaft in the middle of the building. The TV was at least 50 years old. Bathroom was tiny and the shower head sprayed water everywhere. WiFi only worked in the lobby, not in the room. Breakfast was €8 which we didn't get because that price was too unreasonable. The room was cleaned every day but they did not change the sheets or towels, just straightened the bed and emptied out the trash. The only positive is that it is one block from the nearest Metro station and also within walking distance of the Archaeological Museum. There's graffiti everywhere but all of Athens is like this.

Not bad -

This was booked as a last minute stay in Athens. We got a 'family' room. It seemed pretty standard for Athens. It was a bit messy and run down but certainly not more than to be expected for the price and location.

This hotel is located convenient to bus station B in Athens, which is great if you are taking a morning bus to Delphi. The desk folks were organized and very nice. Room was very clean but shower had kind of bad pressure.

Good Value

People have criticised this hotel's location, we found it to be a quiet street less than a 10 minute walk to Larissa Station (which connects to all the lines, i think it's 3 stops from the centre). Sorrounding area is residential and really not that bad, for what we saw anyway. The hotel's staff was super helpfull, they did our dry cleaning at an unbelievble rate and quick. Breakfast was satisfactory. The room was really ok for cost with small balcony, my biggest concern was the small shower with curtain which i don't like, other than that, good value.

Wonderful, friendly staff.

The hotel is just a short walk to the Larisa train station which is so convenient. Also, there is a nice grocery store a couple of blocks away. The rooms have been remodeled recently. They are kept clean and neat. Each room has a refrigerator. Some rooms have balconies. The breakfast in the morning was quiet nice. ( Cold cuts, cheese, all kinds of bread, cereal, juice, hard boiled eggs, coffe and tea. )

The beds are very firm. The bathrooms are small but adequate. Your room key turns on your electricity when you put it in the slot by the door. You then remove it when you leave. Therefore your refrigerator turns off too. Therefore you can't really keep perishables in them.

The Wi-Fi is incredibly slow and spotty to say the least.

Good and safe location.

Good safe location near to big supermarket and only 100 meters from Metro and local railway station. Very friendly staff and very good breakfast room on the roof with a good choice of breakfast. Rooms ok for the money, very clean.

Two star hotel situated in a very bad area

Not far from Larissis railway station but for the same price you can find better hotels around Syntagma or Acropolis station. Avoid this one, you will not feel safe, dangerous area indeed.

Great hotel if you are sightseeing athens for a co

Good hotel for the price. If you are coming to Athens for a couple of days and want a bolt holefor seeing the sites, the hotel is perfect. Nothing fancy but decent breakfast and good location. Not many places to eat in local vacinity is only slight negative..

Location close to station is great. Nothing special but ideal for budget conscious traveller who spends maximum time exploring Athens and just needs a good base from which to operate. Quiet and every night is a good rest. Nothing to complain about.

Perfect for a quick stopover

The hotel was pretty much exactly how it appears on the website - basic rooms but that
We're clean and had everything we needed. The area around the hotel was also nowhere near as bad as we were led to believe - in fact there was a really lovey taverna about 200m from the hotel with an adorable courtyard and great Greek salads. Also very easy to get into central Athens by metro (the hotel is so near to Larissa), 4 euros for 24hours of travelling anywhere which also continues onto the next day is so reasonable. Staff very friendly and helpful - overall a good stopover!

Great people!

This hotel is about a half hour walk from all the sites, however you have to walk through some really sketchy places (Omonia) to get there so caution at night time! The staff at the hotel are very friendly and were very accommodating, one of them even walked us all the way to the station and then showed us which station to get off on to catch the bus to the airport! The room itself was comfortable, having a fridge is definitely an asset as was the little balcony. The cleanliness however left a little to be desired. The bathroom was the tiniest we had used so far, the shower had standing room only, there was nowhere to hang the shower head and the shower curtain clearly needed to be changed and was too short! Overall it was alright for the price and the breakfast was pretty good and worth the extra money!

Easy access to Larissa Train station.

The staff were extremely helpful when we asked about bus and train services in the area, plus they pointed us in the right direction to find a restaurant nearby and super market. The hotel is old but clean. The neighborhood looks run down but the main streets are well lit. We found it easy to get into central Athens from here and the hotel is good value for the price.

Athens by train

Diethes Hotel is close to the regional railway station and the Metro and easy for travellers to find, those like me who suffer direction disorder on arrival in a new country. The station master pointed out the lights of the hotel to us from the station exit. Breakfasts are on the top floor and are substantial, giving one a good start to the day. The balcony, while small, allows one to open the French doors and experience the evening breeze. The hotel dog is a friendly character and followed us (or did we follow him?) to the Metro, where he said 'good day' and left us to catch our train. Catching the Metro is the best way to get around Athens as most streets are chaotic and footpaths are narrow.

The hotel location is absolutely great, only less than 5 minute walk from Larissa metro. we took the long way when we get there, with our luggage, and the area didn't look like it's the best area in town...but there're worse areas in Athens. A short ride on the metro you can reach most of the attractions and sights. When we were there it was kind of noisy at night, as the hotel is only less than a short block away from a big road, and the one night we stayed, it happened that there're kids and adults in the area that was quite loud in their long night conversation (not sure if they were tourist of locals). The room was very clean, and the service is great! both arrival and departure the staff literally \"jumped\" out to help us on luggage.
