This hotel needs to shut down and have it renovated. Everything is old and ugly. The staff service is also not good. The breakfast is terrible. The location of the hotel is very unsafe is called Omonia. This is the most hotel I hated and definitely not recommend it. I demand a refund.

Very old hotel with minimal maintenance. The toilet was leaking and the roof had a huge hole. No toiletries or extra supplies (such as coffee maker or cups) available at either the room or hotel. Very standard. The only positive thing would be the location, which is not too far from the main areas, and the staff were friendly.

The location is perfect for tourists wanting to see the major attractions of Athens. Metro a few hundred meters away. Good typical Greek breakfast. The bathroom was tiny, which is usual for major cities. ONLY complaint, the air conditioner stopped working our last day. And Athens was having a heat wave.

The hotel pictures online are not accurate. The hotel needs a deep cleaning. Everything from the rooms, Lobby area , Outdated furniture. The rooms and the hallways leading to the rooms have a bad smell Like mildew. Even the furniture was covered up with blankets because of the Cleanliness. The old man that works at night who has a barking dog and Very angry. The breakfast in the morning was misleading! I wasn’t sure if it was orange juice or mouthwash. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. It almost felt like I was sleeping on the outside concrete. There was no air conditioning in the rooms. I had to open my windows to get air. They give a very little tiny bar soap That is as small as a fingernail. The shower is tiny. The elevator is outdated and I would advise you to use a stairs. The owner has a motorcycle in the hallway that smells. They will ask you for additional money upfront. Homeless Live in front of the hotel and always begging for money. The hotel is not located in a tourist area. The hotel has a bar area that has not been used since the 1980s. I was extremely disappointed. Even the older lady that works in the morning was always upset about everything. I hope this review finds you helpful.

Do you research before staying here!

Looking at the pictures on, Hotels.com told me to stay here! The interior of the hotel stunk like wet clothes sitting around for years!!! Dust everywhere, The furniture was covered up with blankets because they have not been changed in years. The room stunk like mildew, and my bed was two beds put together! The soap they give you was so small it was a size of a vitamin. The shower was so small water was going everywhere! They have not renovated anything. The furniture was from the 1970s. I was hot every night because there was no air-conditioning in the rooms. I was very disappointed! Read the reviews before you spend your money I was disgusted!!! I’ve never had worse breakfast in my life. The employees there were useless. I asked for extra towel at night and they said no wait till the morning!!! By the way, the towels were ripped and dirty from stains. The old man working the evening shifts has a mean dog that kept barking at customers! The man was rude, Disrespectful to guests And a very unpleasant experience! The lady in the morning (older lady Working the desk) She didn’t care about anything and was not helpful at all. There was a bar that has not been used in years and alcohol bottles half empty sitting there. The television was set up high on the wall it was so tiny It was very hard to see, and the volume was very low even on Max. The remote control didn’t work. The way to get air conditioning was to open the window! The elevator was super small and Had a horrible odor.

Location is good is the only positive thing, but there are many other hotels in the area.
Air conditioner was not working at all, we had to go ger a fan at 3 am. The bathroom was horrible, shower curtain would not go around the corner shower spraying water all over.
Room did not have any natural lighting.. had windows that opened to an inside area.
Breakfast had boiled eggs, sandwich bread no toaster, jam ans cheese... could not call this a buffet

This hotel is flat out disgusting. The Hotels.com reviews were pretty positive for a cheap hotel but in reality this is a horrible place to stay. The AC didnt work, there was no Wi-Fi, we couldnt even shower because water would come flooding out of the drain in the middle of the bathroom. The linens were soiled, the mattresses were stained and the walls were filthy. The worst of it all were the DIRTY FOOTPRINTS all inside the closet...It looked as though someone had been living in there in secret. Worst hotel i have ever been in. It's not at all worth the money that you save. Do yourself a favour and book anywhere else.

Worst hotel I ever stayed at. The staff is very rude. There is no functioning WiFi or air conditioning. In 30 degree heat, they provided one table fan for three persons. The breakfast was of appalling quality. There is no room service and the bedsheets or towels were not changed during our 3 day stay. The hotel also charged us for fees (local taxes) which were already on the Expedia payment receipt. When we asked for the money returned to us after our stay, they verbally abused us with racist slurs.

Staff is nice, just the room was not what i expected. Old school tv with one channel(doesn't matter much) I got the standard room(cheapest) by price. First of all the beds were not durable at all, very soft and the plak popped out from one of them. (Had 2 twin beds) there was no AC(they gave me the fan), had one power outlet, the shower i used twice in a day and had to use cold water because there wasn't any warm water(i had warm water the next day) by that time i have already booked another hotel.

The day shift staff is okay, the night shift gentleman sleeps all night and if you dare ask a question, his response is always tomorrow.. The room was cleaned two times in 14 days. They asked another two times but I declined because they did not really clean. There was lint under the beds, had to buy own shampoo and soap, and fridge was never cleaned. Would not recommend and will never go back.

Even though it looks OK and relatively affordable the place inside is so old, so damaged, and so very dirty. The room's awful smell of cigarette smoke was disgusting! I feel bad for complaining but our room was so bad we left and walked around Athens to find a hotel late at night! The people are friendly but so dirty!

We are OK and satisfied with this hotel, especially of its convenience location. It closes to the metro station, \"Hop on - Hop Off\" buses, and Karaiskaki Square. Bakery, restaurants are nearby. About 15 minutes walking to Omonia Square. Staff members are friendly. Remember there are 3 different companies that run the \"Hop on - Hop off\" bus lines, but you can catch any of them within 5 minutes walking from the hotel. The cost of taking a Taxi from the hotel to the airport is about 35 Euros to max 40 Euros. Or you may save money by taking a metro nearby to the airport.

Shame on hotels.com. This place was in a war zone. We should have canned it back to the airport rather than stay in this dump. It was. -3 star(negative). We were frightened by the owner. Staff smelled. Do Not stay here!!

There was 5 of us so we got a double room. I don't know what the other rooms were like but this was basically 2 rooms with beds. There was no sitting area, no tea and coffee or even a kettle, no iron, no room service, no laundry service. TV didn't work and it took an hour of going up and down to the front desk to get the air conditioner to work.
If you just want a place to crash then it's ok but if you want a hotel room then go somewhere else!

The location was good. Watch out for extra charges for a very mediocre breakfast. You can get cheaper and better at the nearby Bread Factory. The hotel was very basic. There was a phone it the room that was purely a prop. The maid seemed to take away towels each day and did not replace, and did not even think to replace toilet paper when it ran out. The internet is dodgy, requiring new passwords every couple hours - which meant constant trips down to the lobby. We stayed four nights, the first two nights were quiet, but on the second two nights the hotel hosted a group of rowdy teenagers who screamed and yelled and slammed doors all night with no supervision. Not pleasant. I found the bed reasonably comfortable and the sheets were nice.

The Hotel hummmmmm.

The rooms did not have real beds they were portable pull outs, do you know what it's like to sleep on that for 2weeks? Horrible. We all have back pains. The refrigerator did not fully get cold we complained about that and they told us to put it in there fridge, that's not the point! We wanted the comfort of having it in our room, not having to travel 3floors everytime we wanted a drink. They only put out soap for 3 people and we were 4 we had to complain about that as well. They did not have a bow dryer, you had to take a shower and go down stairs 3floors to ask to borrow. The hotel is a 2 star hotel not a 4 star. I am very disappointed in that. I feel like I over paid for services that were very poor. The Manager was ver unprofessional, and very rude. There was only one lady in the front that was nice. The Internet service was terrible. You had to renew every 3 hours. We had some money that was stolen in the room, the manager was awful. No accountability he said we should have put it in the safe, no I'm sorry for the inconvenience just very heart less. They wanted us to leave the key everytime we went out. That was an inconvenience due to the fact that the consierge was attending there restaurant down stair and we had to always wait till they finished serving people because that came first. Horrible experience.

Hope that whoever runs this hotel read this

The sheets in our room had stains, one with a blood stain. We asked to have them changed, staff does not smile very much which I don't care as long as they do what you request. When we returned late at night nothing had happened. Next day we asked again and nothing again. We asked one more time and It was until then they changed sheets with ones with fewer stains but not acceptable either. Every day we had to ask for towels since they only left two towels in the bathroom. By the way the towels were old. The rooms are clean when you get there, but they never clean them again. I was there for 6 nights and no cleaning. It is a shame because the building is a nice building and they do keep the reception and surroundings clean. They could improve their quality so easily but it seems they are happy with a mediocre hotel. They did not show any interest to make you feel comfortable or happy. I know it is a cheap hotel but they could make it better with very little. As you can see, the requests we had could have been easily solved but it seems is not part of their practices to listen to their customers. I would not stay there again or recommend it.

WORST HOTEL EVER

This hotel is TERRIBLE. The bed sheets were dirty and full of hairs and blood stains. There was only one plug in the entire room. The entire place wreaked with the smell of cigarettes. the bathroom could not have been any dirtier and nastier. The walls were extremely dirty. The bath tub was so dirty that I took showers with sandals on. They only clean every other day so we had to beg for towels, literally beg. the maid was so irresponsible that one day when we came back at night she had left the key on the door. all of our stuff could have been stolen. The only bright spot was the clerk at the front desk, Stevros. He was very nice and cordial. PLEASE DO NOT STAY HERE FOR ANY REASON.

We missed our flight and I called the front desk to let them know we were checking in late. The front desk assistant was not very pleasant. He was hard to understand over the phone. We finally arrived to the hotel and he was still hard to understand. He will talked and walked away.

Lovely hotel, not a five star, full of mod cons hotel however we really enjoyed our stay. We used it as a base to view the wonderful sites of Athens and were able to come and go, no time restrictions. Very helpful when asking for directions.
Breakfast was a traditional Greek serving of boiled eggs, ham, cheese and bread. Staff were lovely, room was refreshed daily and upon departure our flight being late evening meant leaving our bags which they were more than happy for us to do.

Budget option, but needs major repairs

Location was good, and the pricing was great. But I prob would pay a little more next time, because the place does seem to need repairs, some bug extermination, and some updates before I can recommend to a friend. On the plus side, the people seem generally nice (it seems like a family business) and they had food at the hotel.

the staff will respond to the customers. at first, i was put into a room with no hot water, fridge not working, and lots of insets. After one night, they helped me change room. Although the fridge is not working still, there are much less insects.

The wifi changes password every 3 hours.

The staff is very nice.

The room was at ground floor. It was so cold. And alsi there was mould smelt in the air. They said the heating was not available now. Then we understood why the price was so attractive. We accepted to pay extra over price and then we transferred to upstair room. You will not feel the daily cleaning :)) we had not preferred to buy breakfast before we saw it. Then we saw breakfast we thought that luckiky we had not bought it. Very very weak. The scene and around the hotel was not bed but not was as it is desired. Personnel was the best of all things. If we did not pay extra i would suggest. But now suggest to compare others.

Overall, it was a decent stay with no major problems. The room was not very clean when we arrived, but the staff took care of it. A lot of loud guests in the hallways at night led to interrupted sleep. Hotel staff helped us arrange transportation when needed.

Was expecting more from a three star- we reserved 4 people and got a small room- only got two twin beds and one bed barely bigger than the other two. The AC barely worked. Also the neighborhood was very sketchy and we felt unsafe as four, fit guys in their twenties. They did call us a taxi though but this definitely was below expectations.

I booked three nights at Rio Athens and would like to warn you that it doesn't have the amenities described. Well it does have, but they are just out of order. The room had a TV, but it didn't show any channel (the staff said it's a common problem for the hotel). The fridge didn't freeze. I mean it! It had room temperature inside and, again, the staff just didn't do anything despite my request.

To add to it, wifi stopped just before the threshold of my room so I had to go online in the lobby. By the way, the password is valid for only 3 hours then you need to login again with a different one (the give you several paper slips with the passwords at the reception)

I tried to request the room change but, of course, my request was denied. 'This is what you paid for', they said. But I didn't pay for TV and the fridge that I couldn't use! So don't repeat my mistake.

Good Value Budget Hotel

For the price you pay this is not bad at all. Good location very close to the metro which will take you to all the major sights and centres very quickly. I didn't have any problems at all with the area. I have lived in London most of my life and this was pretty typical for inner city. If you are only used to the leafy suburbs I guess it might be a bit of a culture shock. Get over it! There are a some good restaurants within a very short walk (I particularly recommend Seychelles on Avdi Square - where there are also a couple of good low key bars).

Overall the hotel was nice. The staff were wonderful and welcoming.
We had requested a double bed but got two singles. Due to our late arrival we were too tired to get it fixed up. The bathroom is tiny but very clean.

The hotel was easy to access from the Metro. The people were friendly. They kept the restaurant open longer so that we could order a meal after our late arrival. We had a nice room that was clean and well suited for our family of 5. We arrived back in Athens after traveling to one of the islands. We had a stay over before we flew out the next day. It was easy to take the metro from the airport to the hotel. If you need a place to stay for one or two nights, then this hotel is clean and affordable especially for a family of 5. Not impressed with the Rio. It has fallen on hard times and the front facade is more ımpressive than the rooms. Shower had mıldew, front staff was unhelpful and the wifi was iffy and limited to 3 hours for your stay. On the plus side, it was very close to the metro station and a decent restaurant a few blocks away (Alexander the Great)

No Sleep in Athens

Good Price But Not Very Comfortable

I know European hotels have a different standard, but one thing I think should be standard is an actual bed. My room had only 2 cots. Literally cots--on casters with a 4-in mattress. I didn't get 1 good night's sleep in the 5 nights I stayed.

Also, no temperature control in the rooms. I was absolutely freezing despite sleeping in full pants and sweater, and they wouldn't turn the boiler on because guests in other rooms were too hot.

WiFi in the lobby was reliable, but only worked in my room occasionally (and my room was only 20ft from the lobby).

Staff was friendly and my room was always clean. Someone was available 24 hours, but that means they were making quite a bit of noise at random hours of the night, taking out the garbage and such.

Location was good in that we could walk to the Acropolis, etc. but the neighborhood was scary and we felt like we had to be back in our rooms before dark. But honestly, pretty much the whole city of Athens feels that way.

Room was good-sized, but the bathroom was tiny. Couldn't walk in without smacking my arm on the doorknob. Showerhead was cracked on both sides, so sprayed the entire bathroom no matter what angle I tried.

Restaurant had large selection including numerous pizzas, but the food was not particularly tasty.

Nice hotel-walking distance to stores, Acropolis..

Friendly staff, helpful....good location...We had such a fun time, most especially on our Santorini cruise. That was the highlight of our vacation! If I were to return to Greece, I would pick this hotel again-..we felt safe walking around..

Nice and close to the Acropolis

Was a great budget conscious hotel in the centre of Athens. Only a 10-15 minute walk to the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora. There was a supermarket and 24 hour restraints across the road. Had everything we needed.

Nice clean room, clean bathroom. Short walk away from metro station. Breakfast was \"no frills\", basics only. Wish the WIFI signal was stronger and more stable - I could detect signal from neighboring hotel more regularly than from this hotel.

Disappointing

I spent a couple of nights at Rio Hotel and I was very disappointed with the rooms.Top floors were noisy (there was an annoying buzz caused by the air conditioning units,spread on top floors), so I requested to to be given another room. Both of the rooms were light less and not maintained properly (dysfunctional doors and loose wall sockets).Breakfast was absolutely poor.
On the other hand ,staff was friendly ,and the daily room rate was cheap.
Over all , staying in the center of Athens every time I visit Greece ,I must say that all the hotels in this area have similar room rates and some of them are far better than this one.

Room was basic but clean. They needed to do some maintenance-the fridge was not cold and the shower curtain fell down as it was badly put up. In saying that, it was still good value for the money paid.

Wasn't worth the low price

This hotel was cheap and relatively near the Agora and Acropolis. However, the bathroom was moldy and the a/c didn't work. The owners seemed nice but it didn't make up for the condition.

hotel rio is located in a quite but central location, the metro connection is just across the road and you can reach all the great historical places in minutes, service was good.staff was very cordial and helpful, on the minus the AC works only when the temperature crosses 30 degree centigrade so for june it was hot.

DON'T STAY HERE

How is this still a 3 star hotel?!? My experience was so unpleasant that although I paid for 3 nights, I left first thing in the morning and paid for another hotel down the street because I couldn't stand another moment here! And I only stayed the full night because I arrived at 11pm.

First, that picture is false. This hotel, although close to the metro, is in a very shady part of town. There is a dumpster right in the front you can see from your window and grafitti everywhere. The staff looks miserable and are unpleasant to talk to. The bathroom reeks of mildew and mold. The sink is so low that you have to really hunch down to use it (and I'm only 5\"2). A/C is critical in Athens in a the summer, and although they advertise it, it does not work. I think it does but they don't have the central control on. When I asked about the A/C, the staff told me they don't turn it on unless the building reaches 30 Celcius (86 F). THATS WAY TOO HOT TO SLEEP! The bed was uncomfortable and unclean. Our hot water did not work after 11pm. The tiny TV does not work. NOTHING WORKED! The wifi is limited to one device, for 2 hours..and it barely worked! It was so bad that after 5 minutes of being in the hotel we determined to leave despite already paying.

Please don't stay here!!

Conveniently located hotel

Hotel is located very close to a metro stations and eating places. Breakfast is not fancy but is adequate. There is a very good night view of the Parthenon and the city from the terrace.

Very friendly staff, simple hotel

This is a simple hotel with very good value for the money. We stayed in a family room with three kids. Hotel has a good location, rooms are very basic but ok. We needed to leave very early to get top the airport and the staff was very friendly with organizing a taxi for us.

Very unfortunate

The staff could not have been more helpful. However, some of the rooms were in very poor condition for lack of maintenance. Cleanliness could and should be improved. The area is unprepossessing and it was a pity it was Easter Saturday, otherwise more things would be open locally. The tourist board approved room rate for the same room has gone down from 80€ in 2010 to 50€. The actual rate charged was about 30€ including buffet breakfast. I feel sorry for them- impossible to run a hotel on that basis. I hope they survive.

Hotel Rio, Athens.

Pluses: Very friendly ambience, helpful staff, English OK.

Minuses: Internet was free, but very unreliable. Maybe not the hotel's fault? Location OK, but nowhere decent nearby to eat in the evenings. The bathroom/shower was not up to scratch.

Repeat/Recommend? Not likely but had no significant issues. You get what you pay for I suppose.
