A great place to stay of you're going to Edinburgh, particularly for Fringe. 24/7 reception, great breakfast options and simple amendities but clean. Room comes with a sink which was great for brushing teeth and washing my face without having to always use the shared bathroom. Shared facilities were clean and easy to access.

Great location and affordable. On the other hand, the check in and check out process was terrible with massive lines out the door for hours waiting. Depending on where you are on the property, it can also be quite loud at night from people walking through the halls.

Excellent, friendly check-in by Katie, who checked that I'd been allocated a room away from the lifts and toilets (because those rooms are always noisy). The shower rooms in Grant House have had a refurb since my last stay, but the shower cubicles are still tiny. Usually I use the shower over the bath instead but the bathroom on my floor was out of order, which was a shame. Good stay otherwise.

Amazing place to stay. Clean and you have all the basic you need. The shared bathrooms were kept clean. But that depends a lot on other tourist as well how respectfull they are to keep the bathrooms clean after themselves. I had a really lovely experience. The check in took a while but probably because they were loads of tourists. But the staff was really helpful and worked as quickly as possible.
The breakfast option was more than expected, really good food and enough to get your day started.
Overall a big thank you for the hard working staff.

The rooms were comfortable and excellent for a few days stay.

The location was a little walk from the Royal Mile, but still convenient, with bus ervices available if needed.

About a 30 minute walk from the city centre or there are bus stops just a 5 minute walk from Pollock Halls. Basic, but very clean & the staff are friendly.

My only slight issue was the closing of the luggage storage. The reception is 24hr, however, you must pick your luggage up before 11pm. I was in Edinburgh for the Fringe, so dropped my suitcase off before the 3pm check-in & planned to check-in & pick up my suitcase around 1am after my last show. Whilst checking in at 1am is fine as there is always someone on reception, I wouldn't have got my suitcase. If the reception is 24/7 & the luggage storage area is just a cupboard off the reception area, why the 11pm cut off?

Rooms are basic student accommodation, so expectations should be set.
Beds are comfortable, with towels provided and showers have shower gel.
Although bathroom facilities are shared, rooms have a sink, although no hand soap is provided.

Despite there being a lot of accommodation, it never felt too busy and I was surprised how quiet it was.

Sadly there are no kitchen facilities at the accommodation to refrigerate food.

The free daily breakfast is very good indeed with a good mix of hot and cold options. At peak times it’s extremely busy!

Finally, check-in at the Reception Centre is a complete joke!

Queues of an hour are common, even in the cold and wet.
Even children, the elderly and those with disabilities, all have to queue outside, it’s ridiculous! Very simply, they need more check-in staff at peak times. The management responsible for this mess should hang their heads in shame - it is not acceptable!

NOTE: “Summer Stays” at The University of Edinburgh management need to update their listings on Google Maps etc. becuase it’s currently a hot mess of confusion.

Pros of Summer Stays are cost efficiency, privacy, access to accommodations (shower, laundry for small fee, breakfast included with stay), 24 hr staff on duty, free wifi, free luggage holding if you arrive before checkin or need to checkout before departing.

Cons, dorms are outdated (hot… I stayed in August, perhaps that’s a contribution), washroom facilities need updated (low shower pressure, feels a bit dirty so wear sandals when walking on the floor), location is about 30-35 mins walk from city centre.

Would I stay here again? Maybe, due to cheap cost and private room.
But was disappointed in the dorm temps, facilities that need updating and keep in mind it’s a bit of a walk to get to old town (no problem if you’re fit and enjoy walking… just something to consider).

We shared a twin room which was a decent size, with OK beds. The en-suite bathroom was clean and a decent size but the shower water pressure was low. The carpet in the room was heavily stained but everything else was clean. It’s student accommodation so it’s not five star! The corridors have a hard surface and you can hear everything going on out there. During the festival, there is a lot of late night coming and going and one night we were woken by people running around and riding one of the maid’s trolleys… Breakfast is buffet style and huge! All you can eat and more. The campus is nice, with a shop and a hotel on site that has a nice beer garden and restaurant, if you fancy a change from the buffet. Parking is very limited and we got one of the last spots. Permits are free but obviously limited to the number of spaces. There’s street parking nearby.
The site is walkable to many of the main festival sites but it’s a fair stretch of the legs. Edinburgh’s bus network is good though, so you can easily get across the city. Overall this is a decent place to stay for a few days but expect door slamming and some stupidity overnight. You’d have to pay a LOT more to get anything better.

Pros:
Room and shared shower/toilet are very clean.
Beddings are new and comfortable.
Delicious English breakfast with good range of selections.
Welcoming and effective reception service.

Cons:
There's basically no noise cancelling facility - you can hear people coming back to their rooms in the middle of the night; slam their doors (unconsciously I believe); talking inside their rooms (if you live next door). Bringing your own earplugs would be helpful.

We stayed here during the Fringe Festival as there were limited accommodations. Check-in was smooth, it has laundry facilities, which was nice, but there was quite a lot of dirt and dust throughout the accommodation (floors, surfaces). I doubt I would stay again.

This accomodation was a good price relative to other accomodation in Edinburgh. We enjoyed the breakfast which is served buffet style in the university refectory which is a quick walk from the halls. We ate a couple of nights at Arthur's which was also a reasonably priced and was tasty. There was also the option of eating in the refectory.
The downsides were the beds which I found to be hard and the tiny TV in the room. We appreciated the shower gel, nice towels and the heated towel rail which kept the towels warm and dry!

The halls are a bus ride or a 25 min walk from town, however convenient for a walk up to Arthur's seat.

The whole experience was fun and felt different to a bog-standard hotel. My 10 year old son really enjoyed it!

The Reception building where you need to check in is difficult to find. The bed was comfortable but the room was way too hot. The shower/washrooms were not clean and I only heard three other people staying in my area. The elevator was out of service for over 12 hrs and I was on the 5th floor. The campus has food and drink options that are convenient for weekend stays if you don’t want to go off campus, however breakfast (free) doesn’t start until 7:30 am. The room was very clean.

Property was exactly as advertised. It is student accommodations. Can't beat the price for a few nights in Edinburgh within walking distance of Arthur's Seat and the Royal Mile. Hot breakfast (7:30-10:00am)was really good and included in the price. Buses were frequent and nearby.
I was there as 1 adult with 1 infant. They had a high chair in the cafeteria for breakfast and provided an infant cot (no sheet) for sleeping. Staff were really helpful.

The property was a quick 20-minute bus ride via route 30. Walking distance to Arthur’s Seat. Quiet area. Lovely campus. Don’t let GPS fool you. If you are taking the bus, get off at Commonwealth Pool. Take a left off the bus. Walk to Holyrood Park Road and make a right walking towards Arthur’s Seat. Pass the Commonwealth Pool Complex. On your right there will be a Guard House for the University. Walk past it. The Reception Center will be on the left. Hope that helps!

The staff was not truthful about check-in. Instead of saying, \"we do not allow check-in before 3\" I was told my room was not ready. However, dozens of people were checking in while I was waiting. Amazingly at exactly 3, my room was ready.
The laundry app did not work nor did the kiosk that sold cards. I had to pay double price to have my laundry done at a location 3/4 of a mile away.
The breakfast was excellent and the room was comfortable and tidy. They could do a deeper clean, but there was nothing terrible,

As before (I've attended several times) the Pollock Halls came up trumps with the standard of its accomadation and food. Reception is well-set up and friendly and your room key is ready and waiting. Because it's student halls security is exceptional without being too fussy. Car parking has been tightened up, but with a pass to display during your stay there are spots around the campus where you can leave your car. Edinburgh is not car friendly, so it's handy that local bus services run regularly to and fro to the city centre - which otherwise is a 15 minute walk away. Given the drastic increase in costly hotel accomadation, the Pollock Halls are a godsend. For the first time I encountered noise in adjacent rooms from a group of youngsters returning late from their gig on the Fringe. The walls are a wee bit thin, but I survived. Both the buildings and the gardens are extremely well kept.

Check in was quick and very efficient. We stayed 3 nights with breakfast included. Excellent selection. Evening meal offered for £21/person. Again wide selection. Alcoholic drink available from Arthur's Bar next door. Room clean, but very basic. No hairdryer offered. I had trouble connecting to internet. Easy walk down into the main town, approx 35 mins, but plenty of taxis or buses.

In many ways this is a nice place to stay. But! The wifi / internet service is as slow as molasses. I stayed in two different buildings and the problem was the same. So I think the problem is not with the wifi signal but with the total internet bandwidth that the property subscribes to. You need to increase the total capacity.

The accommodations seem to be popular with adults of varying ages who seem to be traveling independently in groups and for academic meetings, not typical tourists on holiday. The cafeteria for the included breakfast was mobbed but run efficiently. The view of Arthur’s seat from my modest room was remarkable.

All and all a great place to stay! Close to Arthur's Seat and a less then half hours walk to The Royal Mile. The included breakfast is incredible! A standard private dorm room set up w/ a bit of wear & tear & a fiddly door lock, but clean & comfortable. A sink in the room was a plus, as were the multiple shower/bathrooms available on the floor. The 24 hr front desk staff were always very helpful & friendly, the luggage storage convenient. The included breakfast was great with lots of choice.
The grounds were lovely & well tended, & the view of Arthur’s Seat & Salisbury Crags in Holyrood Park (only a 10 min walk away), was exceptional.
There were several Fringe venues in easy walking distance, & bus stops close if needed.
Would definitely book here again in the future as it was perfect for my Fringe Festival attending needs.

Great way to travel on a budget. Though a shared WC not everyone’s cup of tea, I found it to be free when I needed it and it wasn’t a problem. Also the fact that it’s a room meant to house someone for a few months at a time means it’s at a base level quite comfortable and roomy. Breakfast is also pretty good!
Pollock Halls dorms are a 25-30 min walk to Waverly train station, 15-20 min walk to the Royal Mile and a bit closer to Fringe venues.
Would definitely stay again!

Summer Stays - or, Pollock Halls, as I know it - always does its visitors proud. I've been d\"doing\" the Fringe for years and this must be one of the cheapest stays in Edinburgh during August. The place, as usual, this year was immaculate. The greeting staff are amazingly friendly and patient with the thousands who turn up on their doorstep. The place does its best to be eco-friendly, even with the great, inclusive, breakfast and the variety of different level of rooms to choose from (if you book early enough) must suit all pockets. OK it's not Princes Street or the Royal Mile - but they're all close at hand and the brooding presence of Arthur's Seat (hill/mountain) is right on the doorstep if you fancy a fitness challenge. The staff - from the kitchens to the gardens and beyond do the place proud. Thanks for a great stay!

Unlikely to return

My only complaint is about the room. All other aspects were good especially the breakfast. The beds were clean and comfortable the bathroom was clean but the shower cubicle was poorly maintained. The carpets were just filthy and unhoovered with food under the bed. For the price we paid I was not happy

The room was basic but did have an en-suite. The breakfast was excellent. The staff were very helpful and accommodating. I would stay here again if I am in Edinburgh.

Friendly environment, very friendly and helpful staff. The breakfast was very rich. The room was good, but clearly it was normally used by students (e.g. chair upholstery was dirty). If I have the chance, I will definitely stay there again and recommend it to friends.

Check in staff were excellent. Room was dirty (coffee and tea set up-spoons and cups dirty), table surfaces, floors, sinks not clean. Tiles off in shower and drain plugged which lead to near flood of room as shower floor is continues with entire bathroom floor.

It was a unique experience. We liked the dining hall. The elevator in our building didn’t work from the ground floor so we had to walk up a flight of stairs to take the elevator. Parking is extremely limited.
