Very disappointing stay at Sonesta Select Newark Christiana Mall.
Our room had no hot water from the time we checked in. Maintenance attempted to “reset” it, but the issue was never resolved. We were never offered another room, and by the next morning there was still no hot water, forcing us to leave and book another hotel.
I do want to note that the front desk staff were more than accommodating. The young women working the desk were polite and genuinely tried to help.
Unfortunately, our interaction with General Manager was the opposite. There was no apology, no introduction, and no effort to resolve the situation professionally. We were told we would only receive a half refund despite being unable to use a basic amenity and were eventually told to leave.
Hot water is a basic expectation. The front desk staff handled themselves well — management did not.

We checked in and immediately had to vacate due to serious safety and sanitation concerns.

The patio sliding door would not close or lock properly, which created a significant security risk for our family. In addition, there was a strong odor of smoke and other substances upon entering the room. The bathroom showed visible mold/mildew, and there was rusted and exposed plumbing. Carpets were stained, and ceilings in common areas appeared damaged and poorly maintained.

Because of these conditions, we did not stay in the room at all.

This was not a minor inconvenience, it was a safety and health concern. Families should carefully consider this property until these issues are properly addressed.

The halls were overly dirty. Heavy smoke and pot smell. Main elevator was broke. The room picked stated King size bed and was definitely Queen. The couch and ottoman were absolutely disgusting with stains. The water wouldn’t get hot. The fridge wouldn’t get cold. Noisy (not that that can be prevented). Definitely would not recommend this hotel.

The room wasn’t what we booked, there was no sign of house cleaning, and no hot water. The room was dirty. The entire hotel was disgusting. Trash in the hallways and elevator. There was also vomit in the hallway right in front of the elevator and close to our room. It was there the first night and was still there when we checked out. There was also no continental breakfast or complimentary coffee, as offered on the website. The staff was not helpful with any of our issues. We were told they would discount our stay, but we never received a discount. I am happy we got travelers insurance for our trip. I have filed a claim and hope we get a full refund.

did not know till too late to cancel but there is a higher incidentally fee that is more than the motel room for the night. nothing on hotels.com mentions this. yes you get it back but than can take days. THIS SHOULD BE LISTED ON HOTELS.COM WEBSITE

Staff did nothing about the multiple complaints from multiple people regarding loud music, loud arguing and smell of weed in hallways and in certain rooms. Went to front desk several times and no staff was there, the lights were off and office door closed. Pool water was extremely cold and pool towels were not stocked - let the front desk know and towels still never got stocked and was told they only run the heater in the pool for a short period of time during the day. One day maintenance was covering the front desk because the day time manager never showed up for work. We stayed two nights and had the same issues each night/day.

The hotel itself was clean and tidy, but as a night shift travel nurse I feel like my sleep wasn’t respected here. One day while sleeping after a shift there was extremely loud construction happening in the room above me. There was no notice given and even though I’m a heavy sleeper I was unable to fall back asleep no matter what I did. I had to work that night as well and was very sleep deprived and as a nurse I have to be well rested to take care of others. when I called the front desk because I was desperate to sleep they responded with “sorry if you can hear that” and that’s all. I requested a late checkout from the front desk the day before checkout to which she responded I had til 12:30 to checkout which was fine I was happy with that so I could sleep a few hours after work. But at 11am that day staff was knocking on my door to ask me when I was checking out which was extremely frustrating as I needed that extra time to sleep. When I went to get the luggage trolley at noon so I could check out on time, I was automatically locked out of my room and the same person who helped me set up late check out the day prior asked me if I had set up a late checkout. Overall this was just a frustrating stay and I don’t think I’ll stay again

All Staff was SOOOO Very Nice and Sweet, they gave us a clean room they changed our Towels and Sheets. we heard no Noise from Others Next Door, we venture out and swim and hit the weight room twice, and went to a couple of area restaurants in the radius area which was Yummy and thanks and we will be back and tell friends Too.

The hotel is very dated. The carpet in the hallway is faded & dirty. There was a homeless man in the stairwell & he had the back exit door propped open all night. I booked here because so many people said it was clean. While the room itself was clean, the rest of the hotel was not.

The room had major damage from water in the bathroom and the sink area that had been there a long time. The bed had a broken under the bed area that stuck out making it a hazard. Blood or something on the curtains when I opened them. Stains on the inside of the wardrobe that had been there a while. Overall every time we stay at this location it gets worse and worse. And we found a huge cricket in the bathroom. Probably drawn in to the water because of the cold. This is our last stay at this location. And we come a few times a year. And why is the cafe area never open? Only the over priced cash snacks available.

Room had a small balcony which was nice to get some fresh air without going outside. Good location, next to a very nice brunch spot. Couldn’t ask for more.

When we arrived at 8pm to check in, we were told that the hotel didn’t have hot water. We were told that we could still check in and if our room in fact didn’t have hot water, we could leave. We asked if one of the front desk workers could go up to the room that was reserved for us to determine if there was hot water. It turns out that the room didn’t have hot water. The front desk staff didn’t have any answers to if there were repairs being done or if there was a timeline of when the hot water would be working again. The customer services was horrible. It would have been appreciated if we had received a phone call prior to walking in the hotel front door about the lack of hot water. Thankfully after a quick search, we were able to find a different hotel.

There was no hot water in the entire hotel. This was explained at check in and I was told we would get a credit. We stayed here just as a place to lay our heads for a lacrosse tournament so I was fine with that. I was given keys to a room to check into. When I went into that room someone’s personal items were in there indicating that room was already occupied. I go back to the front desk. I explained this and was given keys to another room. This room only had one bed and I had booked two queens. I was then told there were no two beds available. I slept on what appeared to be an oversized chair and used my coat as a blanket since there wasn’t one in the room and I didn’t want to battle the lobby again. I suggested this hotel to 3 other families as a great spot to stay and they did as well so I was very disappointed and most likely won’t be staying here again considering nothing was done to help the situation.

I stayed at the Sonesta Select Newark Christiana Mall in November 2025, and it was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve had.

There was no hot water during my entire stay, and management did not provide any updates or a timeline for when it would be fixed. Why stay at a hotel if you can’t even take a proper shower? They offered to cancel customers' reservations without penalty, but where am I supposed to go last-minute and pay extra?

The cleanliness was also unacceptable -- the nightstand was sticky, the bed sheets had brown/black stains, and the bathroom was unkept, with toothpaste marks on the faucet and a tub that wouldn’t drain. These problems are easily fixed. There was an odd aroma throughout the room.

Overall, the room felt neglected and poorly maintained. I expected far better from a Sonesta. I would not recommend this property until the management addresses these maintenance and housekeeping issues.

What a strange weekend…

Upon check-in, we were informed that the hotel would be without hot water for the weekend. Since we were only staying one night, and planned on using the pool, we decided it wasn’t worth it to find other accommodations. The front desk staff were PHENOMENAL, though, and took good care of us. The price was fair, the common area in the lobby was well-maintained. Our room definitely had some cleanliness issues (stained sheets, possibly old blood?) and the walls behind the doors looked as if they could use a good wipe down. The room didn’t have any odor though, and was well-stocked. My only other gripe was that housekeeping entered my room 2 hours before checkout while I was using the bathroom. Scared me half to death!

As someone who worked at a hotel for almost a decade myself, I would still recommend this location. Despite some of my issues, we had a great stay and will most likely be returning. Hopefully with the addition of hot water!

You get what you pay for, honestly. The room was fine, but a bit cramped and oddly set up. I did not have a do not disturb door hanger, and I didn't have hot water on my final day. But if you need somewhere mostly just to sleep for a night or two, it does the job. There are definitely far worse places to go.
