Overall a decent hotel in an excellent location. Very close to stations, making getting around very easy. Has a plethora of food options right next to the hotel. Only criticism we had were the pillows were very hard and small. Beds were also a bit more firm than what we are used to.

This hotel is 12 floors from entrance to onsen. It has 1 elevator. That’s 1 elevator for guests & staff. You will regularly wait 5-10 minutes for it. You will have it open up to a linen cart that takes up nearly the entire inside. You will have housekeepers fill it with bags of garbage & have no choice but to ride along with. That 1 elevator was down for maintenance & also broke down several times during our stay - requiring is to walk up to/down from our 10th floor room on a very narrow, external stairwell. Because of that, we regret staying there and will never return.
Now, I love Dormy Inns - staying at them in Osaka, Ikebukuro, outside Shinuya. This was the worst one even without the elevator issue. The onsen is the smallest; the rooms are the smallest. We were told we’d only get 1 cleaning during our 9-day stay; when I called the night before to schedule it, the staff member didn’t put the request in - I believe not understanding my slow, remedial English. I asked 3 days in a row for extra pillows & was turned down. My wife needed her head elevated, but we were stuck with sharing 2 tiny pillows until finally receiving (just) 1 more. We got the breakfast once, which was worth the ¥2000 per person even if a staff member yelled at me for trying to take one last little plate of hijiki she was gathering to throw out. Sorry for not wanting to waste food I kinda paid for…?
the elevator situation is a deal-breaker. Stay at any other Dormy Inn in Tokyo. Just don’t stay here.

I first came to this hotel and I thought this is the norm in Japan until I checked other hotels both in Tokyo and other cities. Not sure but this was the worst hotel by far. They charged premium but the condition was very bad. You get to choose 2 option for the aircon 1: super cold 2: just fan. I had to wake up in the middle of the night sweating to change to cold option. The cold option was also on timer. Bed was super small and I believe this hotel is 1 star. The money I paid was more than other premium hotels I was in. So I guess you just get a good location.

Great place with smaller bathing area that other Dormy Inn's I've been to but very clean.

It is located directly next to a Family Mart and the adjoining streets are shopping area with tons of small shops and restaurants. It can get very busy and loud during the evening rush, but the food options are plenty and excellent.

Both JR Ueno and Okachimachi are within 10 minute walks and nestled in the shopping district is also a subway station entrance.

First Dormy stay. Cool concept/group. Great staff. Extensive Japanese breakfast. Guest laundry colocated with onsen area. Unlike most of Japan, neighborhood is actually fairly dirty with lots of street trash. That said, great restaurants, shopping of all kinds all around the hotel; and, location is superb for accessing transit throughout the city as well as for day trips via Ueno station, and, access to Ueno Park for green space and museums.

* Location close to Okachimachi and Ueno stations for JR lines, and multiple subway lines. Many shops and restaurants within a 5 min walk.
* Good breakfast with hot rice, natto, salads, scrambled eggs, homemade onigiri and more
* Onsen on 12th floor although it is overcrowded if more than 3 people in there at once

Bad:
* Pillows too hard to sleep on. Last time I went to Reception they said they had no different pillows so I ended up just sleeping without
* 1 lift for all floors which usually takes a while to arrive

Rooms were small. Got stuck in a smoking room with a small bed even though we booked for 3 people. They didn't have a futon to lend us either. But we made it work. 3 of us just had to cram in to a double bed. Bathing facility was small as well but clean and functional. Overall staff was nice and we had a good experience. The hotel location is gold. Its unbeatable. It's in the heart of one of the liveliest area. Walk out and in a few steps there are tons of food and shopping. Also like 2 min walk to the closest station. Will stay here again.

Very unhappy with the cancelation fee. 2 nite reservation, understood to be no charge for canceling. Cancel 3 days ahead, charged for 1 of the 2 nites anyway. Won't use expedia again. Their info says no cancel fee prior to the day before. Not true.

This was at least my 5th time staying at this hotel. I found the front desk staff friendlier and more attentive than my last couple of visits.
If any downside to say about my stay at all, it is the absence of a room cleaning service. They stopped providing regular room cleaning service, which I think is acceptable for people only staying 1-2 nights. However, I found it a bit odd not to have this service when my family and I spent a total of 5 nights with them.

We liked:
ONSEN! Good breakfast buffet, great location for shops, transport and restaurants. Free washing machines. Okachimachi is an area full of character and it’s wonderful to just wander the narrow streets full of market stalls and shops. Hotel was able to provide late checkout for a fee of ¥1000 per person per hour which was much appreciated. We actually stayed twice in the same trip as we like the area and onsen so much.

We didn’t like:
Tiny rooms but we know this is standard in Tokyo. It would just be nice to get out of bed on both sides, and actually store clothes.

Just 1 elevator so it can take a while to get in/out.

Breakfast room only has about 20 seats so if you go after 8am you might have to wait.

hot bath is tiny area with 2 tiny pools, it gets very crowded at night time.
There is only 1 elevator, expect wait time is long to go thro 12 floors.
The breakfast buffet is cheap for different varieties of food.
Serve free ice creams, yogurts and ramen in different time of the day in the hotel.
Hotel location is convenience for dining, shopping and all transportation.
Room is actually quiet when all the windows are closed.

This hotel offers a somewhat bigger single rooms in the area within similar budget. About 150 sq ft. Nice layout with space to have my suit case opened. Bathroom is a standing shower without a tub. Shower head is powerful and yet the water is soft. Bathroom counter top is outside of the bathroom and it is big. Best part of this hotel is the wifi speed. On average I got about 60 mbps download and upload speed. Amenities wise it got laundry, indoor onsen, microwave and a manga library with free ice cream.

We loved our stay here. Location is perfect, close to train stations and restaurants and shops.

Hotel room was small of course, but very comfortable and EXTREMELY quiet. We heard no noise from trains or other rooms.

Onsen was lovely. We thought it would be busy but when we went there was usually no one else there. Staff was great. Breakfast was wonderful. The food was very fresh, tasty, and a combination of Japanese and western foods.

Not as great as other dormy inns that I've been to. A lot smaller, only 1 elevator that gets incredibly occupied considering it needs to scale 12 floors. It's also the elevator that service staff use to transport goods and trash, so the elevator can end up smelling quite foul.
Onsen isn't as big as other dormy inns I've been to, but understandable since it is in Tokyo. They have a relaxation room with a fantastic selection of manga you can read.
They were kind enough to let us leave our luggage with them before check in. Dormy inn have very good amenities so no complaints there.
The walls are thinner though so we could hear babies screaming quite a lot, and even another occupant yelling/in a fight with each other from inside our room...
If you need to get anything, you'll need to take the one elevator down to the front desk and collect it yourself, this seems to be unique to this dormy inn as every other dormy inn the staff would be kind enough to bring it up to our room, as well as help us with our luggage to the hotel room if previously left with them before checkin.
The staff were kind and patient with us, our Japanese language skills are not the best but we were able to communicate. We were very thankful that we were able to order Amazon packages and collect them from the front desk.

I’m a return guest so I definitely like Dormy Inn hotels in Japan. Super comfortable and affordable for solo travelers in Tokyo. This one even more so as it is located in Ueno district close to many tourist spots, i.e. Ueno park, Senso-Ji in Asakusa and Akihibara shopping district and many others. Plus, they have sauna and public bath for guests on the top floor. Highly recommended!!!

Opinions from a Returning Customer

I am a returning customer of this hotel. Since around 2017, my family and I have stayed here every time we visit Tokyo. Though room rates are a little high for this hotel these days, you cannot beat its location and convenience. I also think they have improved upon their amenities, such as the taste of the free nightly ramen is improved, or the free ice popsicles outside of the onsen add nice touches to our stay. Last but not least, their new mattresses feel very comfortable, and I had several great nights of sleep!

The breakfast buffet was really great and staff very helpful, but the dining area was very small and crowded. Very nice selection of breakfast items and good quality.
Very nice place to stay for the price and good location. It was a bit difficult to find. Directions from Ueno Station to the hotel on the website or Expedia would have been really helpful, as we had heavy luggage and were wandering around trying to find the hotel!

While the room was small and simple, it was clean and staff were friendly. Big bath and sauna is a plus.

The only down side is how cleaning staff moves their cleaning supplies through narrow hall ways and occupying the only elevator for the building. I also found their stuff spread across the hall ways disorganized.

When we were there a family two doors down had a horrific domestic violence incident and it took forever for the front desk to get help.

The hotel is an easy walk from Okachimachi JR station.
Friendly staff made for a quick check in.
Dormy Inn are always clean and compact, this was no exception. They have everything you need.
There was construction on the road that was slightly audble from our 10th floor room. But after a trip to the onsen we slept without a problem.
Theres plenty of places to eat and drink around the hotel.
We booked another stay and they kindly held our bags until we returned later in the week!

Hotel is in good location, it’s 2 mins to ueno okachimachi station and 5 mins to ueno station. It is neat and clean. There is onsen on 12/F and drinks machines too. However, lift is always occupied. It takes about 5 mins waiting for the lift most of the time.
