This is by far the best hotel experience we've had in Japan. The Japanese style room was large and well appointed, with thick foam futons. The tatami was clean and in good condition. We also enjoyed the fully stocked minibar.

Onsen facilities are clean and well managed. You can enjoy the sound of the nearby river as you bathe.

The standout feature however is the food. It was fantastic throughout our stay, but on our last night we were given an increible sashimi banquet and waigu steak!

Our servers Fifi-san and Yoko-san took very good care of us during our stay. Thank you for making it a wonderful experience. I would recommend Suimeisou to anybody looking for a Ryokan in Hakone.

If you want to stay in a traditional ryokan in Hakone, this is the place to stay! We had our own private outdoor bath and there is a private onsen you can book on the top floor. The staff is very friendly and went above and beyond. It was my fiancé's birthday and they ordered a cake for him upon my request. When we go back to Hakone, we will definitely be staying here again.

Best for location and accessibility

The location of the ryokan in Hakone-yumoto is very good, within short walking distance from the station and bus terminal. Aids accessibility to key transport nodes to get around Hakone! Only had difficulty finding it at first as it is slightly behind the main shopping street. But in comparison with other ryokans Ive stayed at in Hakone (other areas), I thought the ryokan is less value for money in terms of the customer service at reception, room size and the small private outdoor bath I paid extra for. The facility also looks dated and has only one small lift. But the river view from room is gorgeous and therapeutic!

This ryoukan is located very close to Hakone-Yumoto station, the main station to get to Hakone. Front desk could speak English and it was super easy to check in and check out.

The room had a very fancy and beautiful interior. We had the personal onsen and the view was spectacular. Yukata were also provided in our rooms.

The rooms were full tatami and it was amazing to use it as a tea room before dinner and then sleep on futons after dinner which they set up for us during dinner.

The eating time is around 5-6pm so make sure you don’t show up late and miss out! We had a personal eating room and the selection of food was insanely plentiful and delicious, we were super full after. One of us was vegetarian and they were able to accomodate us perfectly, remember to notify them in advance. An older lady served us and she was very cute and respectful, using translation tool to communicate with us.

We were also provided with breakfast which was equally as superb.

We loved using the outdoors onsen, it was easy to use. The noise is quite loud when on the balcony because of the waterfall outside but it’s very pleasant like white noise. Keep in mind, you can’t see anything at night because it’s dark but in the daytime it’s absolutely mind blowing. Definitely recommend you try this experience at least once.

The toilet (separated from the shower area) had a bit of a funky smell to it, but it was located away from the room so it wasn’t a big issue.

No replacement unless we pay for new the towel.

The hotel is conveniently locates closer to the railway station.Everything about the stay was good except for the food. If you don’t eat beef or raw fish then you are in trouble as most of the dishes were raw fish. Also food wasn’t flavorful.

Hakone- be careful where you book

The hotel provides traditional Japanese hospitality. However the service providers who bring the food to the room couldn't say even a single word in English so we weren't able to understand what were we eating. The staff woke us up to breakfast 30 minutes a head of time which was very unprofessional and annoying. We used the private onsen bath but when we asked for more towels they wanted to charge us more. Just hilarious....

We had the most incredible stay here while visiting Hakone. The location is ideal: a 2 min walk from the main train station and right on the river. Waking up to the sound/view of the river is just magical. The team working here is incredibly nice, hospitable and accommodating. We did the half board and the food was delicious and varied. We asked for our meals to be vegetarian and we were served the most beautiful kaiseki style spread in our room. A special thank you to Yuki who took care of us during our stay and made us feel welcome and comfortable. She went above & beyond to make sure everything related to our room and meals was nothing short of incredible. Would definitely come back here again without thinking twice.

Hotel with Traditional Ryokan Feel & Amazing Onsen

Our stay in Hakone was amazing. Hotel Suimeisou room was like a traditional ryokan with a tatami mat room with separate toilet room and shower which we really liked. While we were out for dinner, they set up our room for sleeping. The private onsen on the balcony was heavenly! The next morning, the Japanese breakfast was delicious. The hotel was very close to the station with lots of shops and restaurants. We would definitely stay here again.

Booking information doesn’t show meals are included in the booking price. Surprisingly, breakfast and supper are included, which makes the price exceedingly worthwhile. Japanese traditional meals are delivered to our room at the time designated by us. Delicious and fancy. We stayed for 2 nights, so 4 meals in total. Every meal is different. The best hotel we have ever stayed! Highly highly recommended!!!

Highly recommend this property for being extremely convenient to walk to (even with luggage!) from Hakone-Yumoto station. Good transport options to get to other parts of Hakone too. Staff were accommodating and polite. There was a good traditional vibe and opportunities to eat kaiseki meals, yet was not lacking in creature comforts (lifts, aircon all available). Awesome view of the river, and private onsen was very affordable.

Only thing that I might suggest is having greater accessibility for non-Japanese speaking customers to understand and enjoy the traditional Japanese way of staying in a ryokan (e.g. explaining the components of the kaiseki meal, how to wear yukata etc.). Perhaps more signs or translated instructions for staff to hold would help both staff and guests out.

Overall, highly recommend this as an accommodation for Hakone.

However, it doesn’t mean that the staff isn’t nice and kind. Fantastic attendance to care of making me feel at home and bringing my luggage into my room while I was exploring Hakone when I checked in before the room was ready. Highly recommend the tatami-style rooms as the view was spectacular. I had forgotten something of great sentimental value to me in my room hours after I checked out. Worth the money paid!

Hakone Suimeisou is located just a 3-min walk from Hakone-Yumoto station. The room we stayed in was very clean and large. Much to our surprise, our hostess explained everything about a ryokan stay to us in English. There are public and private onsens on the top floor which you have access to, although you need to pay 2000 yen to book a 50-min dip in the private onsen. We found the dinner and breakfast provided to be very satisfying. Overall, good value for the price!

This place was way above our expectations! The room is immaculately beautiful. The view of the lake by balcony was gorgeous and pleasing. We felt instantly relaxing the moment we stepped into our room.

The staff were super nice and friendly and made sure our stay was as comfortable as possible. The kaiseki meals were delicious and made beautifully. Every detail was amazing. Could not have asked for anymore.

The private and public hot spring baths in our room and in the ryokan were amazing. Beautiful views throughout. We loved it so much we didn't want to leave. This place is a must if you want authentic Japanese hot springs ryokan experience. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place! You won't be disappointed.

Location is amazing. Just less than one minute walk out and you're greeted by tons of local snacks and stores. Train station is literally less than 5mins walk, which gets you to everywhere in Hakone needed.

Best quintessential ryokan hotel experience!

Super convenient location: from the Hakone Yumoto train station walk across the skybridge, down the stairs and around the corner it will be at the end of a tiny short street. Lots of interesting and terrific shopping and restaurants. Direct train from Shinjuku station on the Odakyu \"romance car\". Then enjoy the \"Hakone Free Pass\" from the same station.

Amazing staff: English speaking, very friendly and helpful. Went out of their way to bring child-size yukata and slippers for our kids and a large size yukata and slippers for spouse.

Phenomenal accommodations: high quality, extremely clean, beautiful and peaceful. Everything you'd want for a quintessential Japanese ryokan hotel experience. We booked the room with a private bath. There's nothing that can beat soaking in a tub on your own private open-air veranda, listening to the river water running while sipping green tea and tasting sweets that they've so generously brought as a snack. We also enjoyed the two wonderful onsen baths that were available to all guests.

To-die-for breakfast and dinner: the meals could rival some of the best Michelin star restaurants. Fresh, unique, with also superb traditional dishes. Not to mention we were stuffed full!

The private onsen tub was very nice, but that was it. We booked for a traditional Japanese style room where you sleep on a thin futon on the floor as we wanted to experience the Japanese culture. However, it was extremely uncomfortable and we could hardly sleep and got sore all over our body from it! We knew it wouldn't be as comfortable as a regular bed with a mattress and we understood it was gonna be something different than what we used to. However, what we found very unacceptable was my husband is 5'11\" and their blanket wasn't long enough to keep his body and feet warm, so we asked for an extra blanket, but they told us they would have to charge us almost 300 yen for that. That was simply discrimination towards taller people. And the fact is that many people coming from other countries are taller and that short blanket just wouldn't keep people warm! Also, after the first night (not able to sleep and was cold sleeping on a piece of thin futon on the floor), we tried to ask the staff to give us an extra futon to make it softer on our backs, but they asked for 2100 yen for that. We were so turned off by the whole sleeping arrangement and the fact that they were extremely unaccommodating and just trying to make money from anything possible unreasonably! I'd say for the amount of money we paid for our stay, this was not worth it at all. We won't recommend this hotel to people unless you want to pay a lot more for a western style room so you can get some normal sleep at nigh

We were able to leave luggage at hotel on both check-in and check-out dates. Room size was big enough for a family of four and both dinner and breakfast were very nice. Very reasonable priced.

Had a good night in this ryokan. The location wAs amazing as we didn't want to deal with shuffles and luggage ect that some of the other ryokans offer. We had a room with the private onsen and I recommend absolutely paying the extra money for this. Sitting on the balcony listening to the river in the private bath was beautiful. It was fun with the traditional clothing and shoes, but just untraditional enough to have a private bathroom and toilet and not have to share.

Te breakfast was not for me, as even though I consider myself adventurous, I don't do well with fish and that kind of thing in the morning. That's just me and my western palette. It was very nicely laid out in a private dining room though. we elected not to do the dinner in room, preferring to spend some time out of the ryokan, and had a lovely soba noodle meal down the road.

Overall I recommend !!!! Can't beat the location and the private bath.

My first dani / ticks / bed bugs encounter ever ..

Unfortunately my wife and I had a bad nights stay. We were visited by the \"locals\" called Dani which basically means Tatami bugs / ticks. Fortunately the dani's spared my wife and decided to make me their meal for the night. I have probably 20 over bites when I last checked. This was closed to midnight when we complained to the night manager. He moved us to a new room and I decided to research on the dani's before calling a night to make sure there were no issues in the new room. The tip was to look at your sheets and check for multiple black spots which I recalled that the first room had. Easier on white sheets and if there are a few black spots / dots, best to be alert for the first sign of any itches. Finally got to bed by 2am and was woken up for the scheduled breakfast in the room at 7.30am. Was hoping the hotel made an exception and delayed the breakfast to later given the ordeal we went through. The hotel manager was very apologetic about the entire dani incident. They gave us a discount on the stay and a gift box at check out. The hotel has most amenities you would require. During our stay, there were renovations to the women's onsen so all had to use the man's public onsen based on timings. It's been 5-6 days since the bites and it still itches! For those thinking of staying in this hotel, please note that this was probably just a bad luck on our end as the new room had no issues. I hope the hotel management reads this and start to work out a new cleaning process.

A traditional Japanese hotel

This is a traditional Japanese hotel so the room is spacious and you need to sleep on a “tatami” (the bed is on the floor). The BF is also in the traditional JP style, you may enjoy a whole fish, steamed rice, miso soup and tofu and you need to sit on the floor to eat your breakfast. The BF room is next to the lift and you need to confirm the time for your BF (7:30 or 8:00) with the front desk so your BF will be prepared on time in the morning. I booked this hotel because it is very close to Hakone Train Station and the bus terminal. Also, the famous shopping street is in front of this hotel so I think it is very convenient for everything. You can request the hotel to arrange your dinner but you must return to the hotel on time for your dinner. The hotel provides public onsens but there are 2 separate time slots for men and women. Meanwhile, there are 3 rooms with private onsens and it costs 2000 yen per room for 50 mins. One important thing, I really want to remind all guests that there is a small chair, a bowl and a shower/tap in the private open onsen (half outdoor hotspring), so you need to take a bath one by one before you jump into the onsen and please respect other customers' rights and don’t let your kids keep crying and shouting while others are trying to relax. Even adults should keep their voices down.

during check-in the hotel staff insist that we have to pay extra $ for the other 2 pax and the charge was not cheap. The information was really very misleading ...

Fabulous traditional experience

Stayed with my wife and my parents in a four person traditional room and had a fabulous time! We were blown away by the traditional dinner, and while the traditional breakfast wasn't quite our cup of tea, it was a wonderful experience all the same. The baths up on the top floor were a beautiful and soothing experience too. The location was excellent, and they were more than happy to look after our bags upon arriving early, and departing after the checkout time.

A wonderful stay

We had a wonderful stay at hakone suimeisou. It is just about 2-3 minutes walking distance from Hakone Yumoto station. We booked the private spa for additional costs and it was totally worth it! Would totally stay again should I make another visit here.

Great location. Only 5 mins walk from Hakone Yumoto main station. Dinner was excellent!
Breakfast was a little too early and heavy for me & my hubby though. Was waken up at 7.30 to clear the futon and make way for breakfast. I think we were only given half and hour to eat. I was still eating when they came back to clear the utensils. Given the heavy meal, I wished I had more time to enjoy the beautiful breakfast at my own pace and a longer sleep since it should be a relaxing holiday.....

Great location and food in ryokan

The hotel itself was rather old including the lobby and rooms. The rooms had a distinct musky smell to it however the view of the river made it worthwhile. The futons were comfortable to sleep in and food was the highlight of the stay -got to try a lot of stuff which the lady tried explaining in english but most of the time couldn't. We didn't make use of the onsen but got charged bath tax which was compulsory to pay. Location wise -it's close of the station and all the shops and restaurants. Overall a good experience but I'm glad we only did one night as I like less structured days and my privacy which we didn't have as there were set times for breakfast and dinner and when the futons would be set up or put away in the room.
