This hotel has a lot going for it: a gorgeous setting in the woods, and a beautiful dining room with a lovely outlook. Pretty good location too, with a shuttle bus on demand to pop into town. The staff are outstanding - I was ill during my stay and they (and especially the wonderful Ken) could not have been kinder.
However, this is seriously expensive for rooms that can only be described as Spartan - even for hard-core minimalists. Every wall in our rooms was scuffed, the bathroom smelled badly, and there was nowhere to hang or store clothing. We lived out of suitcases for four nights. The only dining option is a very expensive multi-course option which you must book well in advance - one evening we had nothing to eat and room service was unavailable. The idea that a 'wellness' retreat only offers foie gras options in the evening is a bit odd. The wonderful staff deserve better management!

Beautiful location, very comfortable, excellent service and good food. The room, facilities and grounds are beautiful. It is a little remote so a car or fairly pricey taxis are needed as busses tend to be a bit slow and complicated to get anywhere. We wished we had staid longer.

I would never recommend staying here. While some staff was lovely, on average they were incredibly rude and dismissive. The room itself was a dump; they promised to drive us to a couple places nearby and when asked, laughed in our faces and told us absolutely not. And then we got stranded with no way home - no Ubers would pick us up, and the hotel REFUSED to come (6 min drive). So, the only way home due to torrential rain and dangerous walk was a stranger who offered to drive us.

Not to mention the showers look like a prison cell (and smell disgusting).
One of the worst stays of my life. Would never, ever, ever recommend.

The area is beautiful, but quite remote from Hakone attractions. The hotel does not have transportation well coordinated for train pickups and into town, thus you feel remote and disconnected, making the beauty of the surroundings not worth it. The dining is terrific. The rooms are showing signs of aging and need a refresh.

A beautiful luxurious retreat!

Loved our stay and only wish we could have stayed longer! Great location, welcoming and accommodating staff (they shipped the laptop we left behind to our hotel in Tokyo the following day), fantastic meals (breakfast, dinner and treats) and thoughtful amenities deserve at least a couple of nights stay. Thermal springs are well situated and super relaxing and the area around the hotel is beautiful. I would give this hotel 11 out of 10!

First the positives - we really liked the set dinner. It was wonderful. The Onsen was nice also. However there were many negatives which is surprising since we have never been disappointed with an Expedia VIP hotel until now. When we checked in, there wasn’t an offer of a welcome drink even though the check in counter was in front of the bar. This was surprising. The room itself was not impressive with paint chips and cracks all over the walls. This was shocking given the amount of $ we paid (nearly $500 for the night total). Interesting we read a review in 2023 saying the same thing ! Believe it. There is nothing in the immediate area. The day we left, we couldn’t get a taxi for hours since the area is so remote. The only solution was to have the hotel shuttle car drop us off at the bus stop in cold, rainy weather. The driver could have taken us to a nearby hotel at a different spot 10 mins away but they didn’t. Really? Lastly it states “no children” yet there were children everywhere! I would not recommend this hotel and Expedia should not be rating it as a 4 Star VIP property. We spent two weeks in Japan and this was by far our worst hotel we stayed at. So many other choices for the money.

Definitely a retreat

This place is amazing, and I plan to return in the future. The location is convenient, and the service is phenomenal. This accommodation sets a new high standard for me. Some employees speak English, which is nice. The amenities are the highlight of this place. It was a very relaxing experience before our Kumano Kodo backpacking journey.

From the moment we arrived the service was excellent. The setting is beautiful and the staff are efficient and friendly. This really is a retreat and is very zen-like. The rooms are comfortable and cosy. The food was exceptional and prepared by the chefs in front on you. The onsen was amazing and opening hours to use were great.

This hotel is beautiful! We ended up booking an extra night because we loved the area so much. Hakone is a beautiful town full of nature. It’s so green all around. The hotel has a great bakery coffee area where they hand make their breads. There is a bus stop down the end of the road which takes you everywhere. Not a lot of dining options in the town but the hotel has a great little restaurant.

Our least favourite stay in Japan. They do not prioritize guests for their dining, no one greeted us at check-in (we had to hike in the dark from the road up to reception). The staff were SUPER unhelpful and a bit rude. The walls in the room were peeling. Although it is on a bus route, there is not much transportation here. It was a huge disappointment and I wish we could get a refund and have stayed elsewhere.,

온센을 이용할 수 있어 피로 풀기에 좋았고요.
조식도 종류가 다양하진 않아도 모든 메뉴가 맛있었어요!
아침에 체크 아웃을 한 뒤 카페에서 무료 커피를 즐기며 예쁜 풍경을 바라보는 것도 좋았습니다! 커피 맛있었어요!ㅠ

Where to refresh your body & sould

I strongly recommend Retreat Hakone Före if you want to refresh your body & should for a couple of days. It's an exquisite structure fully surrounded by nature, where you can enjoy all the relax you need.
The staff is awesome, rooms are clean, free coffee and tea at the hotel cafe, and the breakfast buffet...OMG amazing!
Hot springs are also extremely clean and natural.

When asking for 1 hour late check out, I was very disappointed that the hotel asked for additional charge. This is not standard practice so was very disappointing.

Additionally, the hotel clearly says “adult only” yet there were many children staying at the hotel. The title of the hotel needs to be changed

We stayed here for one night and it was the perfect place to relax after seeing museums in Hakone (highly recommend the Open Air Sculpture museum and Pola museum). Great food and onsen, cozy room with nice architecture, and we also got a lovely massage. Highly recommend!

Luxury meets tranquility in hakone

The Nest was everything we expected and more. Peaceful surroundings, great design, attentive service and a beautiful onsen made this a really special stay. The bed was super comfy and you could look out over the surrounding wilderness through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Will definitely be coming back!

A fairly long uphill walk from the road if you have no car. (Golf cart assistance on check in and out). No TV in the room but the hotel style is rather a 'retreat'. Shower room/toilet floor and walls bare cement finish. Additional charge of 150 Yen per night for the hot spring bath (whether used or not!)

Hotel was in a great location, great staff, but effeciency is not great, not staff fault but they need beter training, just small things but it definitely shows. Setting is nice, rooms nice size but needs upgrading. It is a shame as it could be top class but its not, 4stars at best, dinner is not very good so we were forced to eat out.

A hidden gem

Absolutely loved the hotel. Hotel staff is super friendly. You can get free coffee/ drinks from the hotel's nice little cafe. The food at Woodside which is the hotel's restaurant is EXCELLENT. I really did not expect this high-quality food and service for this price. Both dinner and breakfast were very good. Onsen is also very nice -- one outside and another indoor. It was never crowded and I actually enjoyed the onsen place all by myself everytime I went there. You can really relax at this hotel. The hotel is also close to many attractions such as the Glass Museum and the Open Air Museum, etc. I highly recommend this place.

Great stay - will definitely be back

lovely place. Location was a little hard to find, especially since we were driving after sunset, but the drive was definitely worth it. The ambience is great - nestled amidst nature. Amenities are well maintained, with thoughtful touches such as Muji sleepwear provided (which was superb for the cold weather). Design is modern, very clean and great service. There's nothing not to like about this place and we will definitely be back!!

Good location and onsen, but mediocre room

The location is good, really close to the Hakone Venetian Glass Museum and Little Prince Museum, with fresh air and nice views. And I like the overall design style with wood as the major component. The in-house restaurants are very good, luxury and wonderful breakfast.
However, the room condition doesn't quite match the standard of the other amenities. The walls in the room have some cracks, and the shower/restroom wall is just cement wall without any decoration, and I found a bug crawling in my room... For the price I paid, really expect a better room condition. I kind of feel maybe it is because they are still halfway of finishing the overall refurnish. The amenities and outer appearance are really good but the inner room condition is on the other side.

The website doesn’t do it justice, we were taken aback by how gorgeous the place was. Google maps wasn’t very helpful, I’m not sure why it was showing up the wrong location but there was a sign on the Main Street so we found it eventually and we were very happy we did. Excellent service, amazing facilities. Would definitely stay there again.

0歳の赤ちゃんと一緒に宿泊させていただきました。ベビーバスなどをご準備していただき、夕食、朝食時も広いソファー席を確保していただいていたりと、初めての赤ちゃんを連れて旅行でドキドキしていましたがとても快適に過ごす方ができました。
また、どのスタッフの方も笑顔で親切で素晴らしかったです。
私と夫がとても感動したのは料理のクオリティです。
夜のフレンチコース料理、朝のビュッフェ共にこれまで食べたホテルのお料理の中で一番美味しかったです。
箱根は近いので子どもが大きくなったらまた行きたいと思います。

Die Lage \"im Wald\" ist toll, man ist fast wie selbst draussen im Wald! Die Bauweise ist mit viel sichtbarem Holz und in klaren Linien gehalten. Das weitgehend verglaste Restaurant ist beeindruckend gestaltet und man hat direkten Blick auf die Küche. Das abendliche Menü war jeweils ausgezeichnet! Michelin-würdig! weiter sehr schön waren allgemein verfügbare Aufenthaltsräume inkl. sogar gratis-Getränken. Das Zimmer war von der Grösse und Funktionalität sehr gut. Das Bad erschien uns eher klein (wenn auch völlig ausreichend) aber etwas düster und unfreundlich (in Sichtbeton, der schön ein paar Jahre Benutzung sichtbar macht). Das Schlafzimmer war abgetrennt, jedoch mit sehr hochliegenden fenstern ausgestattet, was etwas von Kellerraum-Ambiance ergab (diese hochliegenden fenster haben wir schon anderswo in Japan gesehen, also vielleicht ortstypisch). Es liegt in den Augen des Besuchsres, ob er im Verhältnis zum Preis mehr erwartet oder den Style einfach liebt.

There were areas where you can access for different occasions, such as cafés, onsen, and relaxing library lounge.
The library lounge was one of the unique places. It had a bungalow space where you could lean back and chill. Also, there were a big audio device where you could listen to music and relax.
The best part though, was that they opened the cafés till 22 o'clock and the onsen till midnight!

担当の人によって説明レベルが違ったり、グルテンフリーを伝えても小麦粉のパンを配膳されたり、栓抜きがないので欲しいと伝え部屋に持って来ていただいた時に冷蔵庫の上に無いですか？という言葉があったり、、
小さくたまっていくストレス挙げられるがいくつもありました。

今回グルテンに関しては好き嫌いなので何も問題は無いですが、アレルギーだった場合大変なことになると思います。

施設としての不便は何も無かったのですが、総合的にホスピタリティと情報の共有が足りてなさすぎるかと感じざるを得ない従業員さんでした…。

Då hade de stora svårigheter med att hjälpa oss navigera i buss-och tågtidtabeller. Med tanke på priset så var mina förväntningar på det högre. Maten upplevdes ’fancy’, men smakade långt ifrån fantastiskt. Hade uppskattat mer japansk stil på middagarna, snarare än försök att imitera västerländsk mat och uppläggningar.

Chegamos de longe e cansados , mas o restaurante bar do hotel era nulo . Não tinha opção de comida , apenas uma sopa horrível e uns snacks também terríveis . Péssimo restaurante !!!

リトリートホテルとして期待して行ったが、テレビがない以外は普通のホテルとあまり変わらず、少し期待はずれでした。ヨガや瞑想などのプログラムや、リラックスできる環境が整えられていたら良かったのですが、ホームページに書いてあるようなキャンドルのプログラムもなく、ただ色鉛筆と他の人が途中まで塗った紙が置いてあるだけだったりと、
寂しい内容でした。
施設の雰囲気や食事の内容は良かったです。

Afslapning og oplevelser i Hakone

Dejligt ophold i skønne Hakone.
Blev et godt break mellem Tokyo og Kyoto.
Gode oplevelser med Open Air museum, kabelbanen m.m.
På hotellet var der rigtig gode muligheder for at slappe af og vi brugte også faciliteterne med spil og cafe.
Personalet var helt fantastisk.
